#MeToo: The Wire journalist Vinod Dua accused of stalking, sexual harassment

0

In the ongoing #MeToo movement where women are coming out and naming their sexual harasser, especially at the workplace by men or women in power, the latest to be named is The Wire journalist Vinod Dua. In a Facebook post, filmmaker Nishtha Jain has accused Vinod Dua of stalking her and sexually abusing her.

Nishtha Jain accusing Vinod Dua of stalking her

Narrating an incident from 1989, Jain says that as a new graduate from Jamia Mass Communication Centre, she was interviewing with Dua for his new show, a political satire. She claims that even before she could settle down for the interview, Dua told a lewd, sexual joke. She felt uncomfortable, angry. When Dua asked her expectations for the salary, she quoted an amount most graduates at that time were getting, Rs. 5,000. To that, Dua, according to her, asked her, “Tumhari aukat kya hai?” After the humiliation, she left and later on got a job at Newstrack.

Jain says Dua would know when she was working late and one day she saw him in the parking lot and asked her to get in the car as he wanted to talk. She assumed he wanted to apologise for his behaviour, where he had earlier humiliated her. However, when she got into the car, he accuses him of “slobbering” all over her face. She got out of his car and ran to the office car and left. She claims she again spotted him the parking lot, but she managed to avoid him. Sometime later, he stopped doing this, she claims.

Jain called out Dua’s stand on the #MeToo movement and called him hypocritical when he outraged against actor Akshay Kumar for his sexist remark against his daughter Mallika Dua, where he said he would ‘screw this cretin’.

“He should stop everything and look into his own shady past. I saw him on a thread which was expressing outrage the false accusations against Varun Grover. I could see what his mind was cooking up when stories against him spill out. I won’t be surprised if he denies. He’s always been an opportunist. Sorry, Malika Dua, your father is also one who belongs to the hall of shame. #MeToo.” Jain said in her Facebook post.

In the course of the last few days, two women came forward and accused The Wire’s co-founder and founding editor Siddharth Bhatia of sexual harassment. The #MeToo movement on social media has taken the country by a storm with many big industry names like Alok Nath, Rajat Kapoor, Varun Grover and comedians like Tanmay Bhat and Gursimran Khamba, co-founders of All India Bakchod being accused of sexual misconduct. Journalists like Prashant Jha and film director Vikas Bahl and many, many more have been named as perpetrators of harassment.

Scare in the Air – Air India flies aircraft with fractured fuselage

In what comes as a scary as well as a mind-boggling incident, an Air India Express Boeing 737 flying from Trichy to Dubai hit a wall while taking off from Trichy, flew with a ruptured underbelly till Mumbai and lands in Mumbai with 130 passengers and 6 crews on board.

At 01:18 hours on 12th Oct, AI Express flight IX-611, a Boeing 737-800, AI’s Trichy-Dubai service was on Thiruvananthapuram’s Runway 27 ready for taking off. After clearance from ATC, the flight started the takeoff roll but took off late. In the event, the underbelly and the landing gears collided with the localizer antennas (Installed around 500 feet from the RWY) as well as the airport perimeter wall. The impact ripped the underbelly at several places, the nose landing gear took a hit and a green wire mesh got entangled, the fuselage near wings have fracture signs and one of the VHF antennae got destroyed.

Entangled green wire mesh

Despite this, the pilots kept climbing showing no signs of knowing that their aircraft was involved in an incident because “All systems in the aircraft were normal”.

From the incident reported, it seems ground at Trichy took sometime before they knew what had just happened. They neither informed the aircraft nor any adjoining ATC about the incident until 01:48 hours which is a good 30 minutes into the flight. At 01:48 hours, Bengaluru ATC was informed that the aircraft had hit the localiser antennas as well as the perimeter wall. The extent of damage was still not known. The aircraft, which was now in Bengaluru ATC limits was conveyed the message as soon as it was received but the pilots decided to continue as systems and parameters from flight computers were “normal”.

At 02:30 hours, as the aircraft entered Mumbai ATC, they too were informed by Trichy about the incident. Mumbai ATC asked the pilots for an emergency landing at CSIA, Mumbai but to no avail. The aircraft continued on its flight path. At this point, Mumbai ATC contacted the AI flight operations who ordered the pilots for an emergency landing at CSIA, Mumbai. At 03:30 hours, after it had already left Indian airspace, the aircraft was diverted and began flying back to Mumbai.

Full emergency was declared as CSIA, Mumbai with emergency vehicles on standby. At 05:00 hours IST, the plane safely landed in Mumbai runway 09 with no eventuality.

This whole incident raises several questions on air safety both vis-a-vis pilots and ground. Flightradar data shows the aircraft was at 0 feet at the fag end of the runway.

The pilots calculate V1 and Vr (Rotate) before each take off depending on weather, runway conditions and take off weight. V1 is the speed beyond which the takeoff should no longer be aborted. Vr is the speed at which the pilot must apply flight inputs for the aircraft nose to pitch up, in simpler words, the aircraft takes off at Vr. Was there a miscalculation by the pilots on V1 and Vr calculation? Why the aircraft continued for so long on the runway before taking off?

Another flightradar extract shows, the aircraft was allowed to climb to cruising altitude.

Remember that the aircraft cabins are pressurised. As you climb, the atmospheric pressure surrounding the aircraft decreases as air thins. Hence the pressure difference rises as the aircraft climbs. At 36,000 feet, a fractured fuselage could mean the pressure difference may lead to decompression causing damage to the airframe. This could lead to catastrophic consequences. The question remains, why did the ground staff which was aware of the situation, allow the aircraft to go to such an altitude. Maybe, they were not aware of the extent of damage?

The question also arises on the crew on how did they not know of the impact because there must have been a thud in the cabin at impact. The pictures clearly show that one of the VHFantennaea was damaged anda report says it fell off later.

Picture showing damage to one of the VHF antenna

There was damage to the horizontal stabiliser as well.

However, flightradar data shows that the climb rate was normal indicating pilots may not have known. Also, the localizer antennas were damaged and nonfunctional. Ground really took a good 40 minutes to recognise that the aircraft was hit before take off?

Damage to the horizontal stabilizer

The pilots since have been de-rostered and a detailed investigation is underway. However, some crucial questions on air safety remain. The biggest of them all, why did the pilots continue despite multiple ATC towers informing them of the collision? Why did it take the AI flight operations to make the pilots agree to an emergency landing in Mumbai?

Hope these questions are answered in the investigation and processes are put in place to make our skies safer.

Skandamata: The mother of Kartikeya, the fifth form of Maa Durga

Skandamata, or the mother of Skanda, another name of Lord Kartikeya, is worshipped on the fifth day of Navratri. She is depicted as carrying baby Murugan or Lord Kartikeya in her lap while riding a ferocious lion.

Day 5: Skandamata, the mother of Skanda

Maa Skandamata has four arms, two of which carry lotus, one holds the baby Lord Skanda and one is in Abhayamudra (giving blessing posture). Legend says that a demon called Tarakasur, after a lot of penance and devotion, pleased Lord Brahma, who granted him a boon. Tarakasur asked to make him immortal, which Lord Brahma denied, saying no one can escape death. To that, Tarakasur asked for a boon that only son of Lord Shiva could kill him, believing Lord Shiva will never marry.

Upon getting his boon, Tarakasur started tormenting everyone. Fearing that this would bring only destruction, the devtas requested Lord Shiva to marry. Shiva married Parvati and their child Kartikeya/ Skanda finally brought an end Tarakasur. Lord Skanda also became the chief of the Devtas in the war against the demons.

Each day of Navratri is dedicated to worshipping nine different incarnations of Maa Durga. The nine different forms are Shailaputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayini, Kaalratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidhatri.

Youth Congress leader spreads fake photo of Statue of Unity

On Saturday, Core committee member of West Bengal Congress social media cell and Social media team coordinator of Youth Congress Vinay Kumar Dokania posted an image on Twitter which is supposed to be a photograph of Statue of Unity, the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel which being built in Gujarat. He had posted two images, one photo of Sardar Patel and next to it a photo of a statue of Patel. He also wrote “Thank u Modi ji for Getting The makeover of Sardar Patel in Chinese style”, implying that it is photo of Statue of Unity, and noting that features of the face of the statue do not quite match with the person himself, but it has resemblance with a Chinese person.

Congress supporter spreading fake image of Stature of Unity

Soon the tweet was shared by many people on Twitter, most of them commenting that the face does not match Patel and looks like a Chinese or East Asian person. Some of them also asked PM Modi why a ‘defective’ statue of Sardar Patel is being built with public money.

But is it really a photo of the world’s tallest statue that is being built? If you look at the statue, it indeed looks a bit different from photos of Patel that we have seen. But if you pay attention, you will notice that the statue is under a shed supported by a steel structure, which is visible on the top right corner of the photo. This observation prompted us to investigate the photo further, because we have seen numerous photos of the under-construction statue in media and social media, and never saw it being under such a shed. In fact, building such a tall steel structure will be a major project in itself. This means there is a high possibility that this is some other statue of Patel and not the one being talked about.

Using image search tools available online, we have found that this photo has been extensively used in various media reports for the last several years. Fine tuning our search, we have zeroed onto the source of the image. We have found that this photo is available in stock image site Getty. Here is the full image, which is an AFP photo credited to Sam PANTHAKY, clicked on October 31, 2008:

It is evident from the photo that the statue is clearly nowhere near touching the record of world’s tallest statue. The description of the photo says that is a Bronze statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel which is being built by renowned sculptor Jashuben Shilpi at her workshop near Gandhinagar.

The sculptor is seen working on the statue in the photo, which gives a clear idea about the size of the sculpture. But Vinay Dokania has cleverly cropped the photo to retain only the head of the statue, so that its true height can’t be guessed from the photo. Here is another photo of the statue from a different angle, from Getty Images:

Based on this we can confirm that the youth Congress leader from WB is spreading misinformation regarding the Statue of Unity. The statue in the photo is a different statue of Sardar Patel. Moreover, based on photos of the actual statue being built, it is safe to assume that facial the features of statue matches with Sardar Patel the person and does not look like a ‘Chinese’ person.

The progress of the progress can be tracked in this website, where photos of the statue is regularly updated.

It is not a big surprise that a Congress leader is using a fake photo to attack BJP. Party leader Rahul Gandhi himself is relentlessly attacking the government on Rafale based on totally false allegations, so it is no wonder that his comrades are also following his footsteps only.

Navjot Sidhu compares Pakistan with South India, likes Pakistan culture and food more

0

During Kerala floods, we had seen ugly display of north-south divide perpetuated by various sections including left-wing parties, Congress and liberal section of media. Of course, it is nothing new, many political parties have always instigated people from one region against another region for electoral benefits. And the champion party in this aspect is the grand old party Congress. The party never fails to create divisions in society on the basis of caste, religion, language, relationality etc.

And it seems whoever joins the party, imbibes this aspect of the party. Former cricketer and Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was a long term BJP member before joining Congress few years ago, has come up with such a statement. He said that there no similarity in culture and languages of North and South India. He also said that he feels more at home in Pakistan than south India. Attending a literature festival, Sidhu said, “For me, when I travel to South, I can’t understand the language. Not that I don’t like the food, but I cannot have it for a long time, the culture is totally different. When I got to Pakistan, the language is the same, like you know, when you abuse in English 10 times, one abuse in Punjabi overpowers all.”

This comes weeks after Sidhu’s controversial journey to Pakistan, where he was seen hugging the army chief of Pakistan. Sidhu was in Pakistan to attend swearing in ceremony of newly elected PM Imran Khan, whose anti-India stand is well known. Sidhu had also claimed that he has received assurance from Pakistan that Sikhs from Indian will be allowed to visit Kartarpur Sahib in Pakistan. But later Pakistan had denied the claims of the Congress leader and said that it is not opening the Kartarpur border due to vast difference between the two countries.

This recent Pakistan love from Sidhu is surprising, given that he used to give fiery speeches against Pakistan till a few years ago. He loves Pakistan more than South India because he can abuse someone in Punjabi in that country. He does not like south India because the culture there is different.

Sidhu was trying to highlight the cultural similarity between North India and Pakistan. That is an obvious thing, because during partition the Punjab state was split into, one side going to each country. But there was absolutely no need to bring in south Indian culture to make that point. The language and culture difference between north and south India is already a very sensitive issue, and politicians should try to minimise them, not fuel them by such reckless comments.

The Congress party may disassociate itself from the statement, saying Sidhu has said this to remain in news, but it has a lot to answer regarding some of its leaders’ affinity for the country that is known as the global sponsor of terror worldwide. At the time when Pakistani terrorists are killing our jawans regularly, at least Congress leaders should hide their love for that country.

HAL Staff Union snubs Rahul Gandhi, says ‘we are government employees, we represent PM Modi’

0

Congress National President Rahul Gandhi visited Bengaluru on Saturday and interacted with some of the current employees and retired employees of Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL). However, As per a report by MyNation, the HAL Staff Union General Secretary, Suryadevara Chandra Shekhar, had explicitly denied extending support to Rahul Gandhi in his political histrionics as they consider Narendra Modi as their leader and have full faith in his leadership.

General Secretary, Shekhar said, “We represent the government and will not meet any political forums. We are government employees and represent Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. We are pained that HAL has not been given the opportunity to manufacture Rafale, but we have spoken to the Defence Minister about it.”

Upholding individual’s freedom of choice, the Staff Union said that the employees are free to attend Gandhi’s visit but their Union won’t share a platform with him. “Employees can attend the event as it is their individual choice. We will not be sharing the stage with Rahul Gandhi,” states circular from HAL’s Employees Union. Even HAL company management have echoed the Staff Union’s sentiments and issued a circular advising their employees to refrain from attending Saturday’s interaction, as it might invite action under employees’ code of conduct.

The HAL Union has planned to write a letter to the government, appealing it to not abandon the 78-year-old Public Sector Unit(PSU) company and securing a fresh contract from the Indian Airforce with the hope to salvage themselves from the abyss they are staring at.

Amidst all this, Rahul Gandhi met some of the past and current employees of the HAL in an interaction in Bengaluru this evening. Addressing the people there, he continued with his hackneyed rhetorics of blaming Narendra Modi and the BJP for the woeful state of HAL. In yet another blatant attempt to change the goalpost and deceive the listeners, Rahul Gandhi took ouster of HAL from the Rafale deal as Private sector versus Public sector battle and accused the government of allegedly colluding with the private partners to undermine Public sector companies such as HAL.

N Sitharaman had already busted this lie in a press conference and blamed Congress for HAL’s exclusion from the deal.

In a run-up to the state assembly polls scheduled to happen sometime later this year, it is widely considered that Rahul Gandhi’s visit to HAL is just an extension of his political dramatics to target Narendra Modi led BJP in their alleged role in the alleged corruption case in Rafale fighter jets deal. With HAL Staff Union’s apparent support to Narendra Modi, it’s anybody’s guess how many people believe Rahul Gandhi’s concocted allegations regarding the Rafale Deal.

Earlier Dassault CEO had demolished his lies about the Rafale deal  A comprehensive article busting Rahul Gandhi’s lies about the flimsy allegations was done by OpIndia. Various ministers of the Government of India, Reliance Group, and French government all have debunked his frivolous allegations but Rahul Gandhi is in no mood to accept his mistakes and concede his defeat.

Number of pilgrims visiting Kedarnath has reached record high levels this year

0

For the first time in the history, the number of devotees visiting the Kedarnath temple has been a record high. As per reports, by the end of August, 7 lakh devotees had already visited the temple. An earlier report had estimated that by the end of October, the temple will see  10 lakh visitors.

On the first day after the doors of Kedarnath Dham were thrown open for devotees, more than 25000 devotees visited the shrine. The numbers reached 5 lakh in the first two months. By June 30, the number of devotees coming to visit the Dham had reached 6 lakhs. The numbers had dipped from July to September due to the monsoon season. During this time, approximately 40 thousand pilgrims have reportedly visited the high altitude temple.

This season, the Jyotirlinga temple had welcomed devotees in a new avatar. Laser shows, new arrangements for devotees including a meditation cave, new pavements and several new amenities were added. PM Narendra Modi is also a devotee of the temple and has been personally monitoring the development project in and around the area.

In the past 22 days, the Kedarnath Yatra has reportedly gained momentum and the devotees are visiting in large numbers. Since the opening of the gates, around 7,00384 devotees have reportedly visited. As per reports, compared to last year, this year has seen double the number of devotees.

Meanwhile, SP Superintendent PN Meena reportedly took note of the travel arrangements and talked to the passengers. He thanked the pilgrims, traders, officers posted on duty and the security jawans for their cooperation in the Yatra. He assured that till the closure of the gates, all the basic amenities will be made better available to the devotees.

Assam government all set to deport 23 more Rohingyas back to Myanmar

0

After the deporting 7 Rohingyas back to Myanmar earlier this month, the government has decided to deport 23 more Rohingyas, who have been staying at various detention camps in Assam after they were caught staying illegally in the state, claim reports.

According to reports, the to-be deported Rohingyas are being kept at detention camps in Silchar, Goalpara and Tezpur of Assam, and they have given their consent to the government for deportation back to Myanmar.

The reports say that the Ministry of Home Affairs has initiated official protocol with Myanmar government and has received assurance of safety and well being of the deportees. Myanmarese authorities have also completed the verification of their home addresses. However, the dates of deportation have not been decided yet. Government sources indicate that the deportation will take place in a phased manner.

The government has also asked north-east border security forces, to be more vigilant of refugees coming from Myanmar. The government has also alerted Railway ministry to keep an eye, on Rohingyas travelling across the country after a huge number of Rohingyas were reported to be travelling from northeast to South India through long-distance trains, last month.

Last month, a three-judge bench of Supreme Court had rejected a petition seeking to stall the deportation of 7 Rohingyas and after that, the 7 persons were handed over to Myanmar authorities at Moreh border post in Manipur.

According to estimates, there are about 40,000 Rohingyas living illegally in the country, majorly concentrated in Hyderabad, Jammu, Kanpur and outskirts of Delhi. They have been time-and-again reported to have been indulged in crimes across the country. Although Assam government has started sending them back to their homeland, other states and union government is yet to take a decision regarding the Rohingyas living in other states.

NIA court orders the attachment of five Mumbai properties of radical Islamist preacher Zakir Naik

0

Zakir Naik, the founder and radical preacher of Islamic Research Foundation has been charged under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act by the NIA. A special NIA court has ordered the attachment of his properties on Thursday. As per reports, the concerned properties are five properties owned by Naik in Mumbai’s Mazgaon area.

The properties are reportedly listed as follows, a 1360 square foot shop in Mazgaon’s Crystal Residency building, 2 flats at Jasmine Apartments in Dockyard Road and two more flats in a building called Maria Heights in Belvedere Road.

Advocate Anand Sukhdev, on behalf of NIA, reportedly told the court that Naik has been trying to obtain citizenship in several foreign nations and was, therefore, trying to raise money for the same by selling these properties in Mazgaon.

On June 15, 2017, after a non-bailable warrant against Naik had been issued, the court confirmed him as a ‘Proclaimed Offender’, under section 82 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), owing to requests made by the NIA. His passport was also revoked. NIA had registered a case against Naik in 2016.

Naik has been notorious in spreading hatred between religious groups and for inciting Muslim youth to join in the jihad against non-believers of Islam. He used to use his NGO ‘Islamic Research Foundation’ (IRF) and a TV channel (Peace TV) to air his hate speeches in the country. The government of India had taken the channel off the air and banned the NGO.

He left India in July 2016 and is wanted criminal on basis of terror and money laundering charges. The NIA had found 37 different properties of Naik with a total worth of almost 100 crores. Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate had attached the properties of the IRF totalling to approximately 18.37 crores.

Interpol had also issued a red corner notice against Naik. He has been traced to Malaysia and though the Indian government has made formal requests to the government of Malaysia, the Malaysian PM had in July this year informed that Naik has been granted a permanent residency of Malaysia and he will be allowed to stay in their country as long as he does not create any problems.

UP: Maulana carrying a knife hurled abuses at PM Modi and CM Yogi post Namaaz in front of Secretariat

0

In a shocking incident that transpired in front of gate no.1 of the secretariat annexe building in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, a Muslim cleric carrying a knife, identified as Rafiq Ahmed, sat on the middle of the road, read namaz and later hurled abuses at PM Modi and the Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath who was incidentally present in the building at that time.

What is being seen as a major security lapse is that the incident took place in front of the secretariat, which is supposed to be a high-security zone.

While it was reported that a man wearing a green turban came riding on a scooter, sat in the middle of the road, disturbing the regular traffic, read namaz and then hurled abuses at the Government, what is shocking is that the police personnel standing there kept staring without taking any action against the culprit.

At the time of this incident, the Chief Minister was holding a meeting of officials in the secretariat (annexe).

However, taking a note of the incident Hazratganj, Lucknow SSP, Kalanidhi Naithani, suspended two officers on duty, namely constable Manoj Kumar and Anand Prakash.

The cleric was, however, arrested by the Lucknow police and a case had been registered for the same.
