Jharkhand HC rejects Lalu Prasad Yadav’s bail plea, asks him to surrender before August 30

0

In another major setback for Lalu Prasad Yadav, the Jharkhand High Court has rejected the bail application of the former Chief Minister of Bihar in the fodder case and also ordered him to surrender before 30 August to the Ranchi Jail authorities.

Lalu Prasad Yadav had earlier filed a bail plea in the court seeking a three-month additional extension to his current bail period citing medical reasons. However, the high court rejected his plea, as it has already been extended twice citing on medical grounds.

The CBI had opposed the idea of any more fresh extension of bail to the convicted Lalu Prasad Prasad Yadav. Earlier on August 10, the Jharkhand high court had extended the provisional bail of the RJD supremo till August 20.

Prabhat Kumar, Lalu’s lawyer said that “This means that Lalu would have to leave his treatment in Mumbai midway and go back to the Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi.” He further added that Lalu will be brought to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi from Mumbai’s Asian Heart Institute where he is currently admitted.

Reportedly, Lalu Yadav can still appeal for the bail again after he undergoes thorough medical examination conducted by the team of jail doctors.

Lalu Prasad Yadav has been found guilty for indulging in series of fodder scams when he was the Chief Minister of Bihar and currently serving a total of 14 years in jail. He and his family, including daughter Misa Bharati and son Tejashwi Yadav, are facing several cases related to disproportionate assets and also for conducting benami transactions. Addition to this Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family, including Tejashwi Yadav are accused in multi-crore Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) scam.

Fact Check : Did PM Modi thank HH Sheikh Mohammed for Rs 700 crore aid to Kerala?

Kerala has been grappling for the past few days with a debilitating flood that has ravaged the state. Over 350 people have lost their lives and thousands have been rendered homeless. The relief activities have been on with the armed forces and central government working alongside the state government to bring some semblance of relief to the citizens.

Many leaders from across the globe extended support and condolences in the wake of such a disaster. Many politicians back home, however, were busy in using the floods to play petty politics. Amidst the chaos, news surfaced that UAE had offered to extend Rs. 700 crores to Kerala as disaster aid and that the Indian government was unlikely to accept the assistance. While the reasons for not accepting foreign aid during a natural disaster is a norm set from the year 2003, many took the opportunity to lash out at the Modi government unfairly.

Today, however, the UAE ambassador categorically denied extending any such disaster aid to Kerala. Many questioned how this lie was furthered in the first place. Upon digging, one finds that it was the Kerala CM who had taken to Twitter to announce that UAE is planning to provide assistance of Rs. 700 crores. In many news reports, it was also said that Kerala CM was informed by Lulu supermarkets owner Yusuf Ali, that UAE had planned to extend such assistance. After the Ambassadors denial, however, the issue should have ideally been laid to rest, but, many used it to further another conspiracy theory.

Many took to social media to assert that the UAE government had issued a clarification because of “pressure” from the Modi government, considering it showed the Modi government in a bad light since UAE was offering more financial assistance than the central government. To prove this hypothesis, they included a tweet of Prime Minister Modi thanking the Prime Minister of UAE HH Sheikh Mohammed for extending assistance to Kerala. They asserted, that if UAE had not extended the aid at all, PM Modi would not be thanking the PM of UAE.

The tweet, if one notices, that many are referring to is as follows :

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s tweet is timestamped 6:06 AM on 18th August 2018.

The news of UAE extending support to Kerala to the tune of Rs 700 crores came after the gratitude tweeted by Prime Minister Modi.

Khaleej Times tweeted the news on 20th August 2018.

The official Twitter handle of the Chief Minister’s office tweeted its gratitude for the same on 21st August 2018.

Most news outlets also covered the news on 21st August itself.

The News Minute reported on 21st August 2018, at 1:57 PM.

India Today reported the news on 21st August, 12:43 PM.

The Hindu reported it on 21st August, 1:47 PM.

And Khaleej Times reported the Kerala CM’s expression of gratitude on 21st August, 11:28 PM.

Hence, it becomes logically impossible for the Prime Minister to be thanking HH Sheikh Mohammed for the purported Rs. 700 crores disaster aid to Kerala considering the Prime Minister tweeted early morning on 18th August 2018.

When one looks further, one realises that HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister and Vice President of UAE and the ruler of Emirate of Dubai had tweeted a generic call to support. He had tweeted that the state of Kerala in India is current witnessing huge floods and that ahead of Eid Al Adha, he urged everyone to “not forget to extend a helping hand to brothers in India”.

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum tweeted on 17th August 2018.

HH Sheikh Mohammed had also tweeted on the same day that UAE has formed a committee and urged people to contribute generously towards relief efforts. As rules for accepting foreign aid formulated by former PM Manmohan Singh goes, India can accept donations from NGO’s and private citizens. However, there was still no news of the Rs. 700 crore aid from the UAE government that is being purported now.

It thus stands to reason that Prime Minister Narendra Modi expression of gratitude towards HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum was not for the purported extension of Rs 700 crores disaster aid, later proven to be false news, but for his tweet extending support to Kerala and his call to help ‘brothers in India’ in the wake up devastating floods.

Here is how the PM Modi led central government responded to the Kerala floods

0

Recently Kerala had been struggling with ceaseless rains triggering one of the worst floods the state has experienced in decades. While hundreds of people have lost their lives and thousands displaced, the central and state government have been mobilizing all possible resources towards relief and rescue operations. At this time of distress, the central government has been resolute in providing urgent aid and relief material without any reservation to the state.

Though there are certain sections of people trying to misrepresent facts and paint the tragedy in colours of regionalism for political agenda, the Prime Minister undeterred by this absurdity has been relentlessly working towards the relief work by personally monitoring it on a daily basis. He visited the state on the 17th and 18th August and instructed the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), to regularly monitor and coordinate the rescue operations.

Following the decision, taken in the meeting held amongst senior defense service officers, officers from NDRF and NDMA, Secretaries of civilian ministries and the Kerala chief secretary, the Center launched one of the largest rescue operations with 40 helicopters, 31 aircrafts, 182 teams of rescue, 18 medical teams of defense forces, 58 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 7 companies of CRPFs were pressed into service along with over 500 boats and necessary rescue equipment. All the resources working simultaneously managed to rescue over 60000 human lives.

Defence aircraft and helicopters have made 1084 sorties of duration 1168 flying hours and airlifted 1286 tonnes of loads and carried 3332 rescuers. In addition to this Navy and Coast, Gaurd ships were used to carry relief materials to Kerala.

The rigorous search and rescue operations and mobilization of resources alone would have cost the central government hundreds of crores of a rupee.

Financial mechanism to meet the rescue and relief expenditure during any notified disaster event is governed by notified guidelines on the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF). Every State needs to follow the protocol laid down by the government.

In the case of recent floods in Kerala, the centre anticipating the urgency had released 600 crores in advance pending assessment by the IMCT; an Inter-Ministerial Central Team, deputed by the centre for on-the-spot assessment of damages and the additional requirement of funds. This is in addition to the 562.45 crores already made available in SDRF of the state, (SDRF has been constituted in each state in which center contributes 75 percent for general category states and 90 percent for special category states of the hilly region every year, to meet the rescue and relief expenditure in case of any notified disaster).

In addition to the financial support, the centre has made available large quantities of emergency food, water, medicines and other essential supplies, including additional allocation of food grain, as and when requested by the State. While doing this the regular protocols have been disregarded keeping the crisis in mind.

Alongside, a number of measures from various schemes of the central government have been also announced. Few being, ex-gratia payments from the Pradhan Mantri’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF), rebuilding of damaged infrastructure under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY), additional 5.5 crore person days under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), national agencies like the NHAI, NTPC, and PGCIL to assist the state in rebuilding national highways and restoring power supply.

It has been clarified that Rs. 600 crores released by the centre is the advance assistance only. Additional funds would be released from NDRF on the assessment of damages as per the laid down procedure.

Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan has expressed sincere gratitude to the central government and Prime Minister Modi for the assistance provided during the on-going relief work in the aftermath of the Kerala floods in an interview with Vasudha Venugopal of Economic Times.

While certain people have been using the tragedy to further their own political agenda and fan regionalist sentiments and fuel a North-South divide in the country and ‘liberal’ intellectuals have been resorting to fanning separatist sentiments in the wake of the Kerala floods, Kerala CM Vijayan and Prime Minister Modi has perhaps displayed how in the time of crisis, politics should play second fiddle federal cooperation.

Assam found 14 lakh ‘fake children’ in the state Anganwadi list, says Maneka Gandhi

0

Pointing out the flaws in the existing system of marking beneficiaries in the ‘Anganwadi’ scheme of the central government, a state-level inquiry in Assam has revealed the existence of 14 lakh ‘fake children’ in the state’s beneficiary list of the said scheme. The minister for Women and Child Development, Maneka Gandhi stated the same on Thursday while addressing a conference on ‘Rashtriya Poshan Mahh’(National Nutrition Month).

The Minister stated that after this startling number was revealed the center has asked all the states to carry out similar inquiries to weed-out the non-existing beneficiaries from the country’s list of near about 10 crore beneficiary.

The ‘Anganwadi’ scheme falls under the supplementary nutrition scheme for child development. 14 lakh Anganwadis provide home rations to a total of 4.6 crore infants and 1.9 crore mothers and hot-cooked meals for 3.6 crore children aged between 3 and 6. This scheme was introduced to tackle the menace of malnutrition in the country in mid-1970.

Thanking the Assamese state government, the Minister stated that in the initial survey conducted by the state-inquiry team last year revealed the existence of 3 lakh fake beneficiaries to the scheme. The subsequent survey done in June 2018 has stated the number to be 14 lakh, fake children. On average the lowest amount spent for each beneficiary is Rs.8 per day, out of which 60% is borne by the centre and 40% is borne by the state government. This means a loss of approximately Rs. 1 crore every day due to such non-existing elements in the beneficiary list.

Pointing out the inefficiencies and lack of data-driven solutions in the scheme, the minister also stated how for the first time since the induction of the scheme every state will start counting the beneficiaries. This, the minister believes will stop the drainage of resources. She stated –

“We are requesting every state to do the same during the Poshan month of September so that the money comes back into the system and can be used to improve quality of food. We have to count the children in the system and make sure these are real and not fake children,”

Gandhi also pointed out how at the end of the day it is the children that suffer and the unjust pay-work ratio of the Anganwadi workers. She stated –

“Now we wake up after 40 years and realise the system didn’t work. The food isn’t good, the Anganwadi workers are underpaid and overworked. It’s the child that suffers.”

12 ministries will coordinate for the nutrition month focusing on issues such as food fortification, complementary feeding, breastfeeding, growth monitoring and others.

Vijayan’s 700 crore lie and whether Kerala floods are a ‘man-made disaster’

0

Two Supreme Court judges, Justice Kurian Joseph and Justice KM Joseph, both from Kerala, made significant donations towards flood relief operations on Sunday, earning them the nation’s approval. They could now have the nation’s gratitude if they choose to initiate investigations into the role of state’s chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan and his government in this allegedly ‘man-made disaster’.

One issue is rather straight-forward. Vijayan went public in declaring that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) would make a Rs 700 crore donation towards flood relief fund. Vijayan said that Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, made the Rs 700 crore assistance offer when he spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone.

Vijayan’s claim has now turned out to be a lie. UAE ambassador to India, Ahmed Al Banna has categorically stated that no such promise of Rs 700 crores aid has been made by his government. As Al Banna said, “All that has happened is a national emergency committee has been formed…for our friendly people and friends in Kerala.” Albanna further said that his UAE government understands “the financial aid rules in India”.

The honourable judges could haul Vijayan on multiple counts: (a) Mr CM, how and why did you make such a false claim; (b) Your party state chief, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, has blamed the Modi government for refusing this aid as an “act of vengeance” and that you’ve chosen not to contradict it, why you must not be perceived as a “partner in crime”; (c) what do we make of your instructions to the state police to stop “fake news” when you yourself have gone ahead with this terrible lie of Rs 700 crore UAE “fictitious” aid news.

The political connotation is obvious: It projects Modi government as petty and stingy when assertions are made that NDA’s Rs 600 crore aid has now been topped by UAE’s 700 crores and that it’s putting politics over people. Projecting Modi as the enemy of Kerala could only yield electoral dividends for the ruling Vijayan party and possibly for “mahagathbandhan.”

The second issue is already under the Supreme Court’s domain. The honourable judges only need to advance its scope and bring Vijayan and his state government under its scrutiny and ask whether the Kerala floods could’ve been avoided.

An Idukki-resident Russel Joy has filed a petition that the Mullaperiyar dam and its overflow which caused utmost damage is a responsibility between two states, Kerala and Tamil Nadu and that both indulge in passing the buck.

On Thursday, the Kerala government made a startling disclosure to the three-member Supreme Court bench. It blamed Tamil Nadu for Kerala floods! The Kerala government claimed in Supreme Court that despite its repeated pleas for the controlled release of water, Tamil Nadu “suddenly discharged” Mullaperiyar reservoir by “opening all the 13 shutters to Idukki downstream.”

“The sudden releases from the Mullaperiyar dam forced us (Kerala) to release more water from the Idukki reservoir,” Kerala submitted. (The three-member bench, led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra would next hear the case on August 24).

A few other emerging facts make it imperative for Supreme Court to extend its brief and investigate the role of Kerala state governments and whether the floods were a ‘man-made disaster’. It has now been disclosed that Vijayan’s government in Kerala, in one go, released the shutters of state’s 40-odd dams. They didn’t opt for a gradual release of waters and there was a little prior warning to its unsuspecting, unfortunate citizens, as the opposition alleged. Experts too believe the waters should have been discharged earlier from the bulging Idukki, Cheruthoni and Edamalayar dams. Water in these dams was already full by July- end but the shutters were only opened in mid-August.

Ecologist Madhav Gadgil, who headed the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP), claimed this week that floods and landslides in Kerala are a man-made disaster. As per Ashok Keshari, engineer professor of Delhi’s IIT, Kerala state “released water from the dams only once the danger levels were reached”.

The nation has stood as one in support of Kerala reeling under this massive tragedy. Over 350 people have died so far, houses and farms have been washed away, infrastructure wiped out, and Vijayan has worked out a figure of Rs 20,000 crore aid on his calculator.

But what if this was a man-made disaster? The investigating authorities need to yank out the truth in open. Till accountability is fixed, another disaster, massive loss of innocent lives and strain on your and mine tax money is never too far. Only those who celebrate floods are sharks who syphon off free funds and donations. They must be identified and called out.

Chattisgarh: Top left wing terrorist with a bounty of Rs 1 crore on his head surrenders to police

0

In a major breakthrough for the internal security of India, Pahad Singh, the senior leader of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) has surrendered to the Chattisgarh Police on Thursday. He carried a bounty of Rs. 1 crore on his head and is believed to have been involved in over 80 cases against him out of which 40 cases have been filed in Gadchiroli alone.

Pahad Singh, who is an active member of newly formed Special Zonal Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh Committee (SZMMC), belongs to Rajnandgoan district of Chattisgarh and his surrender is pegged to be a big step forward in ending the Left wing terror in the country. Maharashtra Police had announced a reward of Rs. 16 lakh to whoever gives any information about Pahad Singh. In fact, even Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh governments had announced rewards of Rs. 25 lakh each on Singh.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Durg, GP Singh said that the reason for the surrender of Pahad Singh was the rising disillusionment against the left wing Maoist ideology. The IG said that Singh was fed up with huge discrimination that exists in his party between the cadres of Andhra Pradesh and the local ones. “The local cadres were also seen as outsiders and are always under suspicion for AP and Maharashtra cadres,” the IG added. Reportedly, after his surrender Singh said that Maoists are not following any ideological war but running an extortion racket.

DM Awasthi, Special Director General of Police (Naxal Operations) said that Pahad Singh’s surrender is one of the most important surrenders in the recent past. It is reported that the security agencies have been working on the newly formed SZMCC for the last couple of years and many Maoists have been arrested and many neutralised. “Due to the immense pressure of security forces, more surrenders will take place in the next few months,” said he said.

Reportedly, the intelligence agencies have issued warnings that the Left wing terror groups are expanding in MMC (Maharashtra-Madhya Pradesh-Chhattisgarh) consisting of areas of Balaghat, Gondia, Rajnandgaon, Mungeli and Kawardha districts. However, the surrendering of the Naxals has been high in the recent months, as the security forces are carrying full scale operations against the Naxals in the states of Chattisgarh, Maharasthra and Jharkhand. Hundreds of left-wing terrorists have surrendered in the past few months and seeking to re-build their lives. The combination of the developmental projects and intense security operations in these areas, have resulted in shrinking down of naxals forces in the country.

CNNNews18 refers to attack on Kanwariyas by Muslim mob as ‘Kanwariya Menace’

0

A group of Kanwariyas returning from their pilgrimage were attacked with stones and lathis by a Muslim mob in Rajasthan’s Tonk district. According to reports, the mob attacked the Kanwariyas when they were passing through a Muslim dominated area, leaving 14 Kanwariyas injured.

The incident occurred in the Malpura town in Tonk district. The Muslim mob has even set vehicles on fire. According to reports, a mob carrying sharp weapons fiercely attacked the Kanwariyas such that even some policemen accompanying the Kanwariyas had to flee. Later the police took charge and section 144 has been implemented in the area.

An additional police force has been deployed in the area to control the situation. It is notable here that this is the second such attack on Kanwariyas in Rajasthan. Earlier this week, in Fatehpur, Rajasthan, a group of Kanwariyas were reportedly attacked by Muslims. Section 144 was imposed there too. Like the Malpura incident, there too the local Muslims had attacked the Kanwariyas after their group passed a mosque and reportedly torched an SUV and damaged a roadways bus.

However, the mainstream media has been repeatedly portraying Kanwar yatris as miscreants in recent times. Based on a few stray incidents, many media houses have been trying to build a narrative that Kanwar yatris are lawless Hindu goons.

A CNN News18 report covered the attack on Kanwariyas but the tweet with the report was shared with a hashtag #KanwariyaMenace. This despite the fact that the video in the tweet clearly stated that Kanwariyas were the victims and were attacked. Another tweet, shared today with the same hashtag, linked a report that had the headline ‘Stones hurled, SUV torched as Kanwariyas clash with locals in Rajasthan’s Tonk, 15 injured’.

A report by Firstpost also had a similar headline that stated ‘Kanwariyas clash with locals’, subtly implying that it was the Kanwariyas who had initiated the violence.

The headline of Firstpost.com news report

Lakhs of Hindus undertake the Kanwar Yatra every year. They carry holy water from rivers to offer them in temples of Lord Shiva but are often painted as a menace to the society.

USA stands by its statement, says Imran Khan told to take ‘decisive action’ against terrorists

0

The bilateral relationship between Pakistan and the United States of America has hit a new barrier. The U.S under the new administration has time and time again raised the issue of growing terrorist activities within the territory of Pakistan and forced the Pakistani administration to take notice and carry out measures to curb terrorism.

In the most recent of such occurrences, the U.S secretary of state Pompeo spoke on the phone with the newly sworn-in prime minister of Pakistan Imran Khan. The U.S released a statement which asserted that Washington sought ‘decisive action’ against terrorists operating from Pakistan.

“Secretary Michael R. Pompeo spoke today with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and wished him success. Secretary Pompeo raised the importance of Pakistan taking decisive action against all terrorists operating in Pakistan and its vital role in promoting the Afghan peace process,” the statement read.

The spokesperson of Pakistani Ministry of Foreign affairs, Dr Mohammed Faisal subsequently dismissed the U.S statement. Faisal stated Pakistan takes exception to the ‘factually’ incorrect statement issued the U.S. he furthered in his tweet on Thursday, the 23rd of August that there was no mention of terrorists at all in the conversation between Prime Minister Khan and Secretary Pompeo.

Heather Nauret, who issued the statement, however, today reiterated that Pompeo had indeed raised Islamabad’s importance of taking ‘decisive’ action against terrorist groups operating in Pakistan, and added that the U.S stands by its earlier readout.

Pakistan Deep State and the myth called ‘peace’ that ‘Aman Ki Asha’ journalists further repeatedly

0

Columnist Minhaz Merchant recently tweeted: “Few countries in the world have as many homegrown detractors of the national interest as India has. Character flaw? Greed? Low self-worth?”

A comparison of the reactions to Navjot Singh Sidhu’s embrace of Pakistan army chief Gen Qamar Bajwa at Imran Khan’s swearing-in ceremony goes to indicate the relevance of Merchant’s tweet. Let us first discount the trolls who use abuse as the highest form of their argument. They are a breed apart, as the only idea which appeals to them is threatening and abusing anyone who does not prescribe to their base views. But to somehow portray Sidhu’s hug as an act which will bring peace to the sub-continent and to refer to anyone (remember the trolls are out of the story) who does not agree to the view that this act apparently deserves the Nobel Peace Prize, as “intellectually bankrupt, paranoid, unthinking, illiberal, ignorant, immature idiots” and relating it to “widespread under-employment”, shows that some trolls also wear their sophisticated khadis/Guccis and sip the best wine.

The fact that these so-called ‘liberals’, as they call their opponents “illiberal”, defend Sidhu and themselves on grounds of freedom of expression and deny the same rights to those opposing their views, goes to show that hypocrisy is dying a million deaths in these elite circles. Even the media houses opposing the ‘peace’ narrative played out to defend Sidhu’s ‘hugoplamacy’ are referred to as “commando-comic TV channels”. Notice the condescending description of someone not fitting into your scheme of things?

To extrapolate Merchant’s argument, why do we as a nation turn willfully blind despite the truth staring us in the eye? The truth has been bleeding us since 1947, if not a bit longer, but people now called as the Lutyens’ circuit want us to believe it never existed. The truth that while Sidhu had every right to be seated next to PoK president Masood Khan and hug Gen Bajwa, the people have a right to disagree with his actions and not get ridiculed or lampooned for their actions by veteran media people under the pretext of defending someone’s right to express. As an aside, it is seriously amusing (excuse the oxymoron) to find veterans impress the less fortunate by flaunting their ‘access’ journalism and how wonderfully they have done in their careers, unabashedly through their articles.

But we must not digress.

First things first. Sidhu had every right to be seated next to any quisling or embrace the devil. It was his prerogative and no one has the right to challenge that personal right. On the flip side, did he really have an alternative having lent himself to the mercies of the Pakistani Deep State, which one must admit, played its cards extremely well?

The photo-optics, which has played out subsequently, has gone in favour of the Pakistani establishment. With Sidhu parroting Gen Bajwa’s line, when he apparently told him “Navjot we want peace”, the whole exercise is being projected as something of a grand peace project. What was initially being described as Sidhu’s personal visit is now being projected as some secret Track III peace initiative led by the Pakistani army in collaboration with Indian ‘liberals’, as the option suits the narrative. The only hurdle, it seems, is the “intellectually bankrupt” and “paranoid, unthinking, illiberal, ignorant, immature idiots”, who just don’t get it.

Notwithstanding projecting myself as an impediment for peace, allow me to ask a few questions to Sidhu. Does he know the history of how insidiously Pakistan invaded Jammu & Kashmir on October 22, 1947, and that the valley at least has not witnessed sustained peace ever since? Does he know of the ‘rape’ of Baramulla on October 25, 1947, which spared none including the nuns? Does he know of Operation Gibraltar, the treachery at Lahore, the perfidy at Kargil? Does he care for the family of those who laid down their lives just in order to allow him to give Gen Bajwa a Punjabi ‘jhappi’ as an Indian? Does he know that the Pakistani army is psychologically prepared to fight a “thousand years war” with India over Kashmir and that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto once proclaimed that Pakistan “would eat grass but build the atom bomb?” Does he know that the middle and lower level of the Pakistani army is so heavily religiously indoctrinated that it seriously believes in ‘Ghazwa-e-Hind’ as its religious duty? Does he seriously believe that the offer of General Bajwa to “open the Kartarpur Saheb corridor” is sincere and is not related to the “Khalistan 2020 referendum”, which is now being promoted by ISI in an effort to revive the dormant Khalistan issue and add the third front element to the theory of “Two Front War”, much ridiculed by the defenders of Sidhu’s hug?

To extend Merchant’s argument, there is a sincere effort to turn India into a country oblivious to paradigms of national security. The smokescreen emanating from this fallacious ‘freedom of expression’ debate is ensuring just that.

The flawed at birth argument drawing comparisons between Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s abrupt visit to Pakistan or even Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s bus journey to Lahore is part of that smokescreen. Are we to believe that the promoters of such theories are actually naive to not know that foreign policy is based on the simple theory of “no permanent enemies or friends but only permanent interests”. And before these ‘friends’ jump to any conclusion, “aha, we said so”, and claim Sidhu to be promoting India’s foreign policy, do we need to remind them that despite all the good intents and utopia, foreign policy is neither in the state or the concurrent list of the Constitution.

It is because of which, that the state, till date, has to bear the consequences the 1962 China debacle and not to forget the Sharm-el-Sheikh declaration where the B-word was needlessly introduced and Pakistan allowed to draw parity with the K-word. But then that is how it is. Individual citizens have neither the business nor the authority to conduct foreign policy. Yes, as the Prime Minister, it is incumbent on Modi to engage with China despite Doklam, CPEC or whatever. That is how it is constitutionally. So, shall we stop this void ab initio discussion?  Do not forget that Nixon travelled to China at the height of the Cold War.

Mature nations believe in realpolitik because that is how the world turns. Your or mine like or dislike has no effect on the scheme of the world order.

For all the good intentions which Imran, as per Sidhu and his defenders, has, it is the Pakistani army which will continue to play shots on their foreign policy, especially vis-a-vis the US, China, India and Afghanistan, not necessarily in that order. Even today, Tangdhar sector is hot because of across the border shelling, terrorists being allowed a safe passage to infiltrate India and Eid festivities in Kashmir being marred by violence.

Since a section of politicians and media houses are so enamoured with Pakistan’s peaceful intentions, more so after Imran’s ascent and Bajwa’s “Navjot we want peace” sentiment, how about a small litmus test?

How about Pakistan handing over Hafeez Saeed and Lakhvi to India for their role in 26/11 and Masood Azhar for Parliament attack? Their role in the attacks have been established through international investigations and handing over criminals should not be a problem. That would be a good start, wouldn’t it? By the way, for naysayers, please do remember what happened to the Bhuttos, both Zulfiqar and Benazir, and Nawaz Sharif when they refused to play second fiddle to the Pakistani army.

And for all that talk about how Punjabis would not have a problem with Sidhu’s ‘hugoplomacy’, Capt Amarinder Singh is also a Punjabi, isn’t he?

NYT continues to peddle fake news even as UAE ambassador denies reports of Rs 700 crore aid to Kerala

0

The Kerala floods, arguably one of the worst natural calamity in recent times has left the state ravaged. As support from across the country flowed in, a lot of misinformation and fake news was furthered.

One of those assertions came from the Kerala Chief Minister Pinayari Vijayan asserted that he was informed by a UAE businessman called Yusuf Ali (who owns Lulu supermarkets) that the UAE government has extended Rs 700 crores aid to Kerala in the wake of floods. This was widely reported by Indian media. Later, news surfaced that the Indian government was most likely to reject the aid considering the policy in place for rejecting foreign aid for domestic disasters that has been in place since 2003.

As many used the news, sans facts, to demonise the Modi led central government, questions started being raised over the veracity of the news that UAE had offered the aid to Kerala. Now the UAE government has come out and claimed that no such official announcement for the flood relief is made by the UAE on any specific amount. The UAE Ambassador Ahmed Albanna said that there is no official announcement so far on the specific financial aid. Albanna categorically denied the announcement of Rs. 700 crore aid.

However, even after questions being raised and the UAE ambassador, Ahmed Albanna himself asserting that no official announcement has been made regarding the Rs 700 crores aid to Kerala by UAE, The New York Times continued to further the same narrative.

NYT published an article earlier this morning after the denial by the UAE ambassador, that India is set to reject the foreign aid extended by UAE.

The report said:

After devastating floods killed more than 400 people and engulfed entire towns in a southern state in India, the United Arab Emirates offered $100 million to help the recovery.

The Indian government’s response: thanks, but no thanks.

The NYT report, however, made no mention of the reasons why foreign aid is rejected by India in the face of disasters, or that the UAE ambassador has categorically denied any such announcement of Rs. 700 crore aid being extended to Kerala.

While one would ordinarily expect higher editorial standards from the New York Times, this is not the first time the publication has been caught furthering a narrative which could be considered fallacious and detrimental to the interests of India. NYT has been caught spreading falsities about the Indian economy and its anti-India racism in the past. NYT also used childrens’ deaths to malign Yogi government’s crackdown on illegal slaughterhouses and drew flak for calling the saree a ‘tool of Hindu nationalist campaign’. It had also in the past used lies to insult victims of the Godhra carnage.
