Reliance Group serves a 1000 crore defamation notice to Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam

Reliance Group has served a Rs 1000 crore defamation notice to Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam for labelling “false and baseless” allegations against the company. The company will file a contempt petition against Sanjay Nirupam in the Bombay High Court.

“Nirupam has made several false, frivolous and baseless allegations and defamatory statements in relation to the proposed sale of Reliance Infrastructure’s integrated Mumbai power business to Adani Transmission and linking it with the purchase of Rafale fighter aircraft by the government from France,” the company said in a statement.

Sanjay Nirupam had alleged that the “takeover” of RInfra by Adani Enterprises Ltd was executed at the behest of Prime Minister Modi to bail out Anil Ambani. He has denied receiving any such notice and welcomed the decision by RInfra. He said, “Now let everything get discussed in the court, including the deal in question. Even the court can scrutinise the deal, which according to me is shady.”

The Reliance Group wants Sanjay Nirupam to withdraw his allegations and apologize for his remarks within 72 hours after the receipt of the notice.

Facebook says data of 87 million users might have been leaked to Cambridge Analytica

Social media giant Facebook on Wednesday stated that the personal data of nearly 87 million users may have been ‘improperly shared’ with political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica. This is significantly higher than previously assumed 50 million number as per media reports.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a conference call to news reporters that though Facebook has not seen any ‘meaningful impact’ on usage and ad sales of his company after the data breach, he thinks it is not good if people are not happy about it.

He added that he accepts the blame for the data breach which has irked lawmakers, advertisers and ultimately users and asserted that he still is the right person to lead the company. He stated, “when you’re building something like Facebook that is unprecedented in the world, there are going to be things that you mess up” and insisted it is important to learn from mistakes.

Refuting rumours that the board of directors want him to step down, Zuckerberg added that it would be a challenge because he is the controlling shareholder. He denied firing anyone over the scandal.

Facebook had acknowledged that the personal data of millions of users had ended up with Cambridge Analytica and he is scheduled to testify at a Congressional hearing in the United States next week.

According to reports, Facebook, in a blog post by CTO Mike Schroepfer, stated that the personal data of about 562,455 Indians might have been compromised by Cambridge Analytica.

UK based firm Cambridge Analytica had been in the middle of a global scandal after the news broke that it had used millions of Facebook users’ personal information for targeted political campaigns. US President Donald Trump’s campaign was managed by CA and the Indian National Congress was also reportedly one of its clients.

The Congress party has been in denial mode over its alleged hiring of CA and the allegations of using voter’s personal data to expose social and demographical fault lines to strategise its poll campaign. But several shreds of evidence have emerged showing that it has been in business with the firm.

Chris Wylie, former director of research at CA had blown the lid over the data breach scandal and had even named Congress in a deposition before British lawmakers.

Facebook was severely criticised worldwide for failing to protect user data and its shares have fallen more than 16% in the United States so far. The company stated that it is in the process of making technological changes to avoid leakage of data to third-party applications developers.

The Government of India has sent a notice to Facebook to provide details on the data of Indian users leaked to CA and whether the data might have been used to manipulate the electoral process. The government has set the deadline until April 7th for Facebook to come up with answers.

Despite denial, Shekhar Gupta peddles fake news, doesn’t even report the denial

Once is a mistake, twice is a pattern, thrice is a habit. Shekhar Gupta’s digital news venture ThePrint, published yesterday claiming that I&B Minister Smriti Irani wants to track the movement of journalists through RFID cards.
The article went ahead to claim that the Press Information Bureau is working to issue Radio Frequency Identification Cards (RFID) to journalists. The article also mentioned that Frank Noronha, the Principal-Director General of the PIB had confirmed the move. It claimed that The Print has communicated with Noronha and received a reply from him and Noronha, in his response, has stated that the proposal has not been implemented yet. For reasons best known to Gupta, ThePrint even wrote to Home Ministry when the imaginary proposal was sent by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry headed by Smriti Irani.

His claim, however, was promptly refuted by Frank Noronha himself. The Principal Spokesperson of the government of India and Principal Director General of the PIB, in his tweet in response to Shekhar Gupta’s story, stated the story as completely false and called it an ‘outright figment of imagination’.

However, despite the rebuttal, Gupta has not offered any explanation or defence of the misleading article with unverifiable information. In fact, he has not even acknowledged the rebuttal in an update in the original article nor has he written an article on the rebuttal. It appears like the wilful omission of facts by Gupta. Not only that, he pushed the same article in the morning ‘news capsule’ without the refutal details, thereby peddling a news which has been called out as fake by the spokesperson himself.

Incidentally, Gupta, who is clearly peddling fake news, was one of the first celebrity journalists to resist the guidelines on curbing fake news, which now stands withdrawn, issued by I&B Ministry led by Smriti Irani.

Salman Khan convicted by Jodhpur court in blackbuck poaching case

Actor Salman Khan was convicted today by a Jodhpur Court in the 1998 blackbuck poaching case. The other accused were acquitted.

Actors Saif Ali Khan, Sonali Bendre, Neelam and Tabu were also involved in the case, as per reports, they have been acquitted.

The court is yet to pronounce the quantum of the sentence and the actor is likely to be sent to Jodhpur Central Jail. His counsel is expected to plead for a minimum sentence. Salman reportedly had shot and killed two blackbucks (chinkaras) in the Bhagoda ki Dhani village and the complaint against him was registered on 2nd October 1998. He was also accused of carrying firearms with expired licences.

The actors were in the state for the shooting of the movie Hum Sath Sath Hain during that time and the other actors accompanied him. According to reports, the actor, along with his companions had allegedly fled leaving the dead animals behind after being chased by the villagers.

He was facing charges under section 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act (1972) and other actors were charged under the provisions of law under section 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code.

Judge Dev Khatri had reserved the verdict for today after hearing final arguments on March 28th. The complaint against the actor was registered by the Bishnoi community of the local area. The blackbuck also known as Indian Antelope is the only existing member of the genus Antelope. The Bishnoi community in Rajasthan is known to be fiercely protective of their natural heritage.

Warrant issued against Hardik Patel for being absent during his sedition case hearing

A bailable warrant was issued against Patidar leader Hardik Patel for failing to be present in an Ahmedabad sessions court on Wednesday, while charges were to be filed against him for a 2015 sedition case. This case was filed against him back in October 2015, by the Ahmedabad crime branch.

Owing to him not being present, the matter was pushed to the next hearing on 25th April Judge D P Mahida, following the issuance of the bailable warrant.

In the sedition case, Hardik and his aides are accused of “inciting violence with the intention to dislodge the government” during the agitation to demand an OBC (Other Backward Castes) status for the Patidar community in August 2015. About 13 people are speculated to have died in this violence.

The FIR in question names six accused out of which Hardik Patel, Dinesh Bambhaniya and Chirag Patel were arrested in the past and got subsequent bail. One of the accused Ketan Patel has turned into a prosecution witness regarding this matter.

As per a charge sheet filed by the Ahmedabad police in this regard, the police claims that Hardik and his five other associates created the Patidar agitation and incited violence while being fully aware that the community could not be listed in the OBC category legally and socially.

This warrant against Hardik comes after a setback he received in February the Ahmedabad sessions court rejected a discharge petition filed by Hardik seeking relief from the sedition charges against him.

In total Hardik has two cases of sedition against him. One in Surat and the other in Ahmedabad. In the Surat case too, Hardik had suffered a setback when the Gujarat High Court had rejected his plea seeking to quash the Surat case.

As per local reports, the first arrest of Hardik came in October 2015 at Rajkot for insulting the national flag. After being released the next day, he was arrested by the Surat crime branch. He was then subsequently sent to a judicial custody for 14 days after which the Ahmedabad crime branch arrested him via a transfer warrant.

Manish Tewari, former Minister of Information and Broadcasting, asks ‘what is news’

On the HRD’s move on “fake news”, now jettisoned, the strategy of Mainstream Media (MSM) has been two-pronged – One, it’s an assault on freedom of the press (yawn) and two, the government must define what’s “news”.

The second defence is a stonewalling lawyer’s argument and it fittingly it has come from Manish Tewari who is from the Congress stable of Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Sanghvi (the names say it all).

So what’s “news”? The news is information. If it is not truthfully reported, it’s “fake news”. One wonders why Tewari, once an Information and Broadcasting minister, never came to ask the media houses: “Sirs and Madams, that you are in the business of news, what does news really amount to?”

Wish somebody had asked him while he was in the minister’s chair: “Sir, what do you think is news”. Mr Minister himself would’ve escorted the journalist out of the door. (As an aside, imagine worrying about the freedom of the press when not being able to define news as per se!).

So the idea is, if you can’t define what’s news, how would you define what’s “fake news”? This jugglery was meant to stonewall and embarrass Smriti Irani. Tiwari and the ‘pens for hire’, of course, would take no note of a number of fake news which appear on mainstream media daily and which OpIndia so brilliantly clubbed together recently.

Don’t expect these ‘journalists’ to come clean when caught with pants down. It runs to Press Council of India (PCI) for every speck of dust in the eye. But when the PCI chairman sees value in government’s move, the rogues of the stable—that’s mainstream media—don’t publish it.

They are not obliged to any regulatory measure.

The shameless feel no accountability towards their readers.

They wouldn’t care to inform you that accredited journalists do not amount to the entire community.

These self proclaimed harbingers of virtue won’t tell you that the charm of being “accredited journalists” are the perks and benefits which comes with the tag.

Only if the Editor’s Guild of India and News Broadcasters Association were under the RTI, we would’ve known how many, IF ANY, transgressions of mainstream media in all these years these two august bodies have censored. Or whether the only time they clear their throat is when they cry “assault on freedom of the press.”

Where all this jockeying leaves the readers? No better than vegetables in the eyes of the “journalists”, and we use this term loosely. Freedom of the press? My foot. Freedom to loot and subvert, and scavenge on the dead is more like it.

And India can go to hell.

BJP worker dies in Bengal after allegedly being thrashed by TMC goons

A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, Ajit Murmu, has died in hospital where he was admitted after being allegedly thrashed by TMC workers in Bankura’s Ranibandh yesterday.

According to BJP, Murmu was BJP’s nominee for the Panchayat polls from the area and blamed Mamata Banerjee led TMC (Trinamool Congress) for the attack. According to reports, the TMC supporters launched an attack when BJP men went to the Raniganj Block Development Office (BDO) to pick up nomination papers for the panchayat polls.

As per police, Murmu had left his house at around 10 am when he was injured in violence near BDO office. BJP leaders have accused the TMC supporters of the violence which led to his death. In another incident, BJP leaders have accused that TMC-backed goons had fired guns and hurled bombs in North Dinajpur.

Incidentally, the Congress too has accused the TMC of not letting opposition candidates file their nomination papers. As per West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee President Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the dates of the rural polls were announced suddenly, so that opposition parties could not file their nominations. Chowdhury has also alleged that the election has been reduced to a farce.

Another senior Congress leader of Bengal claimed that they won’t be able to field candidates in all the seats for polls, both in the Gram Panchayat and Zila Panchayat elections.

The Residue of Macaulayism – A brilliant analysis by Sita Ram Goel

0

Almost everyone who wants to portray himself/herself as an educated liberal in India claims to be a ‘voracious reader’. The phrase itself is an indication of erudition, modernity, intellectualism, etc. (you name it). This often leads one to book clubs/ literary fests which only add to one’s sense of vanity and intellectual pride. If things progress at the right pace, the well moulded ‘Macaulayputra‘ is ready to take on the world by the time he/she reaches mid-twenties if not the early thirties.

Any opportunity for correction or reconsideration of one’s ideological or political leanings often vanishes after this point. As a person who has probably met ideal Macaulayputras, I found this thread on Twitter by Hindus United extremely enlightening.

The thread is actually a bunch of quotes from Sita Ram Goel’s book ‘Hindu Society Under Siege’.  Eventually, I ended up reading the entire chapter titled ‘The Residue of Macaulayism‘ from Sita Ram Goel’s book ‘Hindu Society Under Siege’.

Sita Ram Goel was a staunch communist who reverted to Hinduism after escaping from the brutal attack on Hindus in Calcutta during the direct action day launched by Jinnah on August 16th, 1946. After this event, he became a critique of Islam and Christianity. In his analysis of ‘modern’ Hindus who are ashamed of their own heritage and country, he scrutinizes the ways and means of a ‘Macaulayputra’. (The term Macaulayputra is used for the sake of brevity & clarity. It does not appear in the Mr Goel’s chapter). In his clinical analysis, Goel identifies the paralysing processes ingrained in Hindu intelligentsia. Two out of the five processes listed by Goel are reproduced below.

  • A sceptical, if not negative, attitude towards Hindu spirituality, cultural creations and social institutions with solemn airs of scholarship and superior knowledge. Nothing in Hindu India, past or present, is to be approved unless recognised and recommended by an appropriate authority in the West;
  • A positive, if not worshipful, attitude towards everything in Western society and culture, past as well present, in the name of progress, reason and science. Nothing from the West is to be rejected unless it has first been weighed and found wanting by a Western evaluation;

This describes the present day intellectuals from JNU or some other left-leaning newspaper/think tank. They often prefer to quote some western sociologist or philosopher. For them, Kant, Nietzche, are more palatable than Adi Shankara, Buddha, Tagore and Kalidasa. Our education system also reflects this bias because the syllabus is set by the same category of ‘intellectuals’.

Another key part of the chapter is worth reproducing here. Mr Goel analyses the hypocrisy of ‘intellectual’ and ‘secular-liberal’ Hindus when it comes to defending their own rights. Goel writes (emphasis added) :

The traditional Hindu, however, does get stirred when the Muslims and Christians cross the limits and threaten the unity and integrity of his country. He does want to retain his majority in his only homeland against Muslim and Christian attempts to reduce him to a minority by fraudulent mass conversions. He does believe that Hindu society and culture have a right to survive and put up some defence in exercise of that right.

But the Hindu addict of Macaulayism stubbornly refuses to concede that right to Hindu society and culture. He cannot see the need for defence because he cannot see the danger. And he has many strings to his bow to run down the Hindu who dares defy his diktat.

This aptly describes the modern intellectual who always criticises the Indian Army in Kashmir for killing militants but does not have any problems with stone pelters. The Macaulayputra has problems with Jallikattu but has no issues with cow slaughter. Again, secularists have problems with ‘gharwapsi’, and not proselytisation or ‘love-jihad’. This list is a long one. Goel continues (emphasis added) :

His attitude can be summarised as follows:

  • To start with, he refuses to recognise any danger to Hindu society and culture even when irrefutable facts are placed under his nose. He accuses and denounces as alarmists, communalists, chauvinists and fascists all those who give a call for self-defence to the Hindus. Better, he explains away the aggression from other faiths in terms of the aggression which Hindu communalism has committed in the first instance;
  •  Next, he paints a pitiful picture of the aggressor as a poor, deprived and down-trodden minority whom the Hindus refuse to recognise as equal citizens, constitutionally entitled to a just share in the national cake;

A classic example of this Manmohan Singh’s infamous ‘Muslims must have the first claim on resources’ remark. In an older article, I had highlighted how activists like Harsh Mander further this sort of argument very often. Of course, we can’t forget intellectuals who wanted Afzal Guru’s death sentence to be cancelled (emphasis added) :

  •  At a later stage, he assumes sanctimonious airs and assigns to the Hindus an inescapable moral responsibility to rescue their less privileged brethren from the plight into which the Hindus have pressed them. In any case, the Hindus stand to lose nothing substantial if they make some generous gestures to their younger brethren even if the latter is slightly in the wrong;
  • In the next round, he harangues the Hindus that any danger to them, if really real and worth worrying about, arises not from an external aggression against them but from the injustice and oppression in their own social system which drives away its less privileged sections towards other social systems based on better premises and promises. Does not Islam promise an equality of social status because of its great ideal of the brotherhood of men? Does not Christianity present an example of dedicated social service a la Mother Teresa?
  •  If the Hindus are not convinced by all these arguments and become bent upon organising some sort of a self-defence, he comes out with a fool-proof formula for that eventuality as well. The Hindus are advised to put their own house in order which, in his opinion, is the best defence they can put up. They should immediately abolish the caste system, start inter-dining and inter-marrying between the upper and lower castes, particularly the Harijans, and so on and so forth.
  • It never occurs to him that social reform is a slow process which takes time to mature and that in the meanwhile a society is entitled to self-defence in the interests of its sheer survival;

This argument was actively propagated when the Supreme court case on Triple Talaq was going on. In fact, a well known Supreme Court lawyer called outlawing of Triple Talaq as a violation of free speech and propped up marital rape as a pressing issue which should be dealt first (emphasis added).

  •  If the Hindus still remain adamant, he tries his last and best ballistics upon them. He suddenly puts on a spiritual mask and lovingly appeals to the Hindus in the name of their long tradition of religious tolerance. How can the followers of Gautama and Gandhi descend to the same level as Islam and Christianity which have never known religious tolerance?
  • The Hindus would cease to be Hindus if they also start behaving like followers of the Semitic faiths which have been conditioned differently due to historical circumstances of their birth. But he never dares put in one single word of advice to the followers of Islamism and Christianism to desist from always having it their own way.
  • He knows it in his bones that such an advice will immediately bring upon his head the same abusive accusations which Islamism and Christianism hurl at the Hindus. This is the outcome which he dreads worse than death. He cannot risk his reputation for being secular and progressive which Islamism and Christianism confer upon him only so long as he defends their tirades against the Hindus.

We might have as well reached the last stem of this routine with Shashi Tharoor’s book ‘Why I am a Hindu’ where he asks Hindus to be ‘true Hindus’ and forget Hindutva. Though we may have understood bits and pieces of secular propaganda on a case to case basis, Sita Ram Goel in his chapter ‘The Residue of Macaulayism‘ provides a brilliant and comprehensive analysis that is worth reading completely.

Meerut Police slams journalist for casting aspersions on police for registering fake cases

Journalist Rahul Kanwal last night tweeted how in Yogi Adityanath’s Uttar Pradesh, ‘ground report’ from Western UP shows cases of gang rape registered against aged father of the man who was killed in alleged ‘fake encounter’. He said that the case is not isolated but a ‘pattern’ has emerged.

Kanwal further said that those who questioned the encounters, police filed rape cases against the relatives of the one killed.

However, he was called out by ADG Zone Meerut Police who asked Kanwal to check facts before tweeting.

Recently, it has been reported that the criminals in UP are on a surrender spree, many even cancelling their bail bonds to head back to the prison. According to data provided by UP DGP’s office, as many as 142 wanted or criminals with rewards on their heads have surrendered either within the state or outside from 20th March 2017, soon after the new state government took over, on 31st January this year. Besides, there are 26 criminals who despite getting bail did not secure their release and 71 who got their bail bond cancelled and went back to jail. Notably, between 20th March last year to 14th February 2018, a total of 1240 encounters have taken place in the state which has led to arrest of 2956 criminals. 305 criminals were injured in encounters while 40 were killed. UP Police has also seized 169 properties worth Rs. 147 crore which belonged to the criminals.

How NDTV created a ‘fake news’ controversy over a book on PM Modi’s radio program

The past few days have been abuzz with heated discussions on Fake News and people from both sides of the spectrum have pitched in their two cents. Former Union Minister and eminent journalist and now a perennially disgruntled Modi baiter, Mr Arun Shourie decided to visit the NDTV studio to share his views and opinions on the discussion around Fake News. While the irony of discussing Fake News with NDTV could not be missed, the discussion is important because of some of the revelations made by Mr Shourie through the course of the interview. Mr Shourie and NDTV’s Sreenivasan Jain insinuated that the “PMO had faked authorship of a book on PMs Mann ki Baat” which was released by the President of India in 2017.

Mr Shourie on record said that the author of the book “Mann ki Baat: A Social Revolution on Radio” was presented as authored by Rajesh Jain, a long-time supporter of BJP and the founder of Nayi Disha. But, he added that “Rajesh Jain had absolutely nothing to do with this book”. He said that Jain is his friend who had confided in him about not being involved with the authorship of the book and had given him permission to disclose the same on national TV. “He told me he had been dragged into the (book release) function, given a speech to read”, Mr Shourie said.

Based on his disclosure, NDTV further added that a PIB release of May 25, 2017, reported the book release function and had mentioned that Rajesh Jain is the author of the book. They believed this note to be indicative of PMO faking the authorship of the book. OpIndia decided to dig deeper into the issue and accessed public records to verify the claims of NDTV and Mr Shourie. We found that a probable small clerical error has been spun into a massive controversy to derail the discussion on Media Ethics and Fake News.

We first accessed the video of the book release function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Bluekraft Foundation had compiled the book. In the video, it can be clearly seen that Rajesh Jain mentions that he is not the author of the book and the book has been compiled by the Bluekraft team.  In Rajesh’s own words, “I am not the author of the book. It’s a team effort which has put the book together”. Rajesh Jain spoke in the event in his capacity as the Director of Bluekraft Digital Foundation. Therefore, there is no confusion about the authorship of the book from the very outset. The relevant portions of the video are attached here.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JqrkKwufiVQ]

We tried to look into what the media reports about the event said in order to see if any further confusion was created about the authorship of the book. We found an article published in The Hindu on May 24, 2017, which had identified Rajesh Jain as the author of the book. But, the article was updated about 5 hours later and a clarification issued by the paper said that the wrong identification of Rajesh Jain as the author of the book has been corrected in the updated version. The screenshots have been provided here:

The Hindu
The Hindu report publishing and update dates
The update clarifying the error

This goes on to show that at no stage was there an attempt to present Rajesh Jain as the author of the book and in fact, any such mistake was corrected immediately when spotted.

As the final measure, we decided to check a physical copy of the book and cross-check it on Amazon. Surprisingly, there was no mention of Rajesh Jain as the author of the book, either on Amazon or in the physical copy of the book. We have attached both sets of screenshots and you can see that in both cases only Bluekraft Digital Foundation, is named. It seems dumbfounding, that NDTV believes in peddling the fake authorship narrative without even looking at the book. If it was such a huge conspiracy, why would the name of Rajesh Jain not be mentioned as the author of the book! There is no confusion at any stage that Rajesh Jain is not the author of the book and it has been compiled by the Bluekraft team.

Foundation being mentioned as author
Mann Ki Baat book
Physical copy of the book showing the author’s name

In fact, the copyright page of the book makes it amply clear that it rests with BlueKraft.

Mann ki Baat book page
Copyright page of the book

All the above instances show that there has been no concerted attempt to pass on the authorship of the book to Rajesh Jain as Bluekraft Digital Foundation has been and continues to be identified as having compiled the book. So, what remains is the case of PIB press notes which identify Rajesh Jain as the author? The most probable scenario in such a case is that there could be a clerical error which led to this confusion. If that was not the case, at least the books would have the name of Rajesh Jain as the author and the media would not have been directed to correct the mistaken authorship details.

The controversy created by Mr Shourie has been given new life by NDTV and other media houses to derail the discussion on Fake News. But, what it remains is much brouhaha over nothing. A possible clerical error has been used to override other crucial facts available in the public domain to insinuate wrongdoing. While Mr Shourie is on a trip of his own, it would not be unfair to say that this sort of obfuscation is standard NDTV work. But, to answer their question, there is no mystery over who wrote Mann ki Baat book. Just pick up the book and you get your answer.

Addendum :

We got in touch with Mr Rajesh Jain via email and asked him specific questions about the entire fiasco. He has responded with “no comments” to all three of the following questions posed to him :

1. Did you specifically and categorically tell NDTV that you had “nothing to do” with the book on Mann Ki Baat radio program? Is that a direct quote from you or paraphrasing by NDTV?

2. Were you entirely unaware of the planning and production of the book when it was being compiled by the Bluekraft Digital Foundation, a foundation you were associated with?

3. With the Prime Minister’s website updating and clarifying that you are not the author of the book, do you think this matter stands resolved now?
