How Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker praised Modi government’s TOPS and Khelo India scheme ahead of the Paris Games

An old video of Manu Bhaker lauding the Khelo India initiative and TOPS during a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi surfaced and went viral following her historic triumph in the Paris Olympics 2024 on 28th July. The 22-year-old has become the first Indian female shooter to win an Olympic medal, marking a significant turning point in the country’s sporting history. She placed third and secured a bronze in the 10m air pistol competition.

In the video, she expressed, “I set a new national record and won gold at the inaugural Khelo India School Games in 2018. I made it into the TOPS (Target Olympic Podium Scheme) core group. I’ve longed to don the Indian shirt and represent my nation ever since. I can see that many of the athletes on my squad come from Khelo Indian, who guided us all. Some of them are juniors, but others are teammates with me. TOPS has been assisting me since 2018, which is a big stride. I sincerely appreciate their help in successfully resolving even minor problems of athletes. TOPS and Khelo Inda have played a significant role in my life. I have reached here today due to their support.”

The 22-year-old shooter from Haryana’s Jhajjar claimed the bronze with a score of 221.7 while Korea’s Kim Yeji earned the silver with a total of 241.3 as her compatriot Jin Ye Oh took home the gold with a Games record of 243.2. India’s 12-year drought for an Olympic shooting medal came to an end with her victory, which also opened the nation’s medal account at the event in Paris. The last shooting medals that India won were from the 2012 London Olympics where rapid-fire pistol shooter Vijay Kumar and 10m air rifle marksman Gagan Narang, who is currently the chef de mission of the Paris contingent, secured silver and bronze, respectively.

From dreaming of being a boxer in childhood to getting her pistol jammed in the Tokyo Olympics: Meet Manu Bhaker, the girl who made history for India in Paris

In a major victory for the Indian contingent at the Paris Olympics, ace Indian shooter Manu Bhaker brought the country its first medal in the ongoing mega event as she won a bronze medal with a score of 221.7. Achieving a milestone, she has become the first Indian woman to win a medal in shooting at the Olympics. Yesterday, she scripted history as she became the first Indian woman in 20 years to reach a shooting final in an individual event at the Olympics since Suma Shirur in 2004.

South Korea’s Ye Jin clinched the gold medal with an Olympic record of 243.2 points. Her compatriot, Kim Yeji settled for silver with 241.3 points.

I read Geeta a lot and was only focused on Krishna’s words to Arjun: Manu Bhaker

After making a coveted podium finish, Manu Bhaker shared that during the match she was only focusing on Karma as she drew inspiration from Lord Krishna and Bhagwat Geeta.

During a post-match interaction, she revealed that she has a habit of reading Bhagwat Geeta and was acting on the lessons imparted by Lord Krishna to Arjun during the match. She emphasised that her only focus was on doing her job rather than thinking about its outcome as she had Lord Krishna’s words in the back of her mind.

She said, “We are looking forward to as many events as possible this time and winning more medals. The entire team has really worked hard. Personally, for me, the feeling is surreal that I did a good job and put in a lot of effort. Even till the last shot, I was fighting with all the energy that I had. I am really grateful that I could win a bronze for India.”

Responding to the query about what was going through her mind in the final moments, she said, “Honestly, I read a lot of Geeta. What was going on in my mind was to do what I could do, what I was supposed to do, and leave everything as you can’t control the destiny or outcome of it. In Geeta, Krishna says to Arjun, ‘You focus on your karma and not on the outcome of the Karma. Only that was running in my mind. Just do your thing and let it all be.”

She later posted on X, dedicating her victory to her country. She also expressed her gratitude to the National Rifle Association of India, the Sports Authority of India, the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Coach Jaspal Rana, the Haryana government and the Olympic Gold Quest.

Redemption for the ace Indian shooter

Her bronze medal at the Paris Olympics is seen as a redemption arc for the ace Indian shooter, who missed a podium chance at the last mega event by a whisker. Incidentally, the budding Indian athlete missed making it to the finals last time by just 2 points as her pistol had malfunctioned at a crucial juncture.

In the Tokyo Olympics, her pistol malfunctioned during the qualifications and it left her heartbroken as it derailed her debut Olympic outing and denied her a podium finish.

It all unfolded as a technical snag in her pistol stole six precious minutes and it started mounting pressure on her as she had to finish the remaining shots in the reduced time limit. After consulting her coach Ronak Pandit, she found out that a lever in the pistol was broken and it was preventing the barrel from functioning smoothly.

When they updated the jury about her problem, they only allowed her to replace the defective part instead of the entire gun. When she returned to the shooting lane, she had already lost over six minutes and despite all her efforts, she fell just 2 points short of making it to the finals.

She was deeply shattered as the pistol malfunction bereft her of the Olympic medal despite her blistering start at the mega event. Now, three years later, she has redeemed her moment making it to the podium and winning the first medal for the country in the ongoing Olympics.

It is pertinent to note that Bhaker, who hails from Jhajjar, Haryana, a state known for world-class boxers and wrestlers had also tried her hands at boxing. She also participated in a form of martial arts called ‘thang ta’, winning medals at the national level.

Bhaker also took other sports like tennis and skating before taking up shooting in 2016. She tried her hand at shooting when she was just 14 years of age and the 2016 Rio Olympics had just ended. A year later, in the 2017 national shooting championships, she stunned Olympian and former world No. 1 Heena Sidhu and marked her presence in the shooting world. Ever since then, she has only risen through the ranks to become India’s latest shooting star and register her name among Olympic medallists.

Radical Islamic outfit threatens to behead Pakistani Christian activist over ‘blasphemy’, announces $20000 reward for carrying out ‘Sar Tan se Juda’

Pakistani Christian activist Faraz Pervaiz, who has been living in exile in Thailand for over a decade, has yet again been the subject of death threats from radical Islamic outfits.

On Saturday (27th July), he informed that a Debonadi organisation named ‘Allama Muhammad Rashid Madni Hamadi Jamia Darul Uloom Hamadiya’ had announced a $20,000 reward to behead him.

The radical Islamic outfit has accused Faraz Pervaiz of committing blasphemy by supposedly producing pictures and sketches of Prophet Muhammad. Posters, calling upon Muslims to do ‘Sar Tan se Juda’ of the Christian activist, are being circulated in Pakistan.

“According to Sharia, such a person is liable to death. It is the responsibility of the Islamic government to issue the death penalty to such a person,” the poster read.

Jamia Darul Uloom has appealed to Muslims to travel to Thailand and avenge the alleged insult to Prophet Mohammed by Faraz Pervaiz.

In a video posted on Facebook, radical Islamic preacher Muhammad Rashid Madani reiterated his unfounded claims about the Christian activist and called for his killing.

While speaking to OpIndia from Thailand, Faraz Pervaiz informed, “The purpose of putting a price on my head in Tando Adam and Sangar area is clear. I have been reporting about the forced conversion and rape of minor Hindu girls and their subsequent marriages to Muslim Men.”

The Christian activist told us that the allegations of blasphemy were designed to intimidate him to stop reporting about the plight of Hindu girls in Pakistan.

He added that the radical Islamic preacher Muhammad Rashid Madani is a close associate of Mian Mitho, infamous for conducting forced conversions and marriages.

“Pakistani Muslims are calling me, pretending to be officials from the Indian Embassy. They claim to help me and insist that I meet them in person. This is akin to honey trapping. They want to get hold of me, torture and then kill me,” Faraz Pervaiz revealed their sinister plans.

Life as a refugee in Thailand

In May this year, OpIndia reported in detail about Faraz Pervaiz and how he had to flee Pakistan in 2014.

Despite staying away in far-flung Thailand, death threats from radical Islamists continued to haunt him.

In 2017, an attempt was made to implicate the Christian activist in a false blasphemy case. A year later, a reward of 10 million PKR (~USD 36090) was announced by Jama’at-ud-Da’wah (JuD) “for a Muslim who will kill Mr. Pervaiz”.

Doxxing and threats to murder Pervaiz family in Thailand followed in the years 2019, 2020 and 2021.

“Revenge has no age, time or boundaries. It provocates immediately and its consequences are entirely dangerous,” Faraz said, adding that his family continue to live in fear.

Delhi coaching centre tragedy: AAP minister Saurabh Bharadwaj alleges ‘big conspiracy against people of Delhi’, blames LG for not desilting drains

0

After the IAS coaching institute tragedy, Delhi Minister and Aam Aadmi Party Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Sunday said that there is a “big conspiracy hatched” against the people of the national capital, alleging that despite giving evidence and complaining of corruption in de-silting, no action was taken against the officers involved by the LG VK Saexna.

The AAP minister said that the work of removing silt from drains and sewers in Delhi was not done properly due to the negligence of officers belonging to different departments including PWD, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and the Irrigation and Flood Control Department. He said that the government can neither transfer these officers nor take any action against them, only LG VK Saexna can take action.

Bharadwaj shared a video of a meeting conducted on June 28 regarding desilting, in which Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar, PWD Pr Secretary and CEO DJB Anbarasu, MCD Commissioner Ashwani Kumar and ACS IFC Naveen Chaudhary, Additional Chief Secretary Manish Gupta etc., were present along with AAP ministers Atishi and Gopal Rai.

In the meeting, Bharadwaj shared photos and videos of drains from different areas where desilting was not done and asked about the status of the third-party audit from the officers of different departments.

“All Photos and videos of drains were taken around June 23 to 25, before the monsoon started in Delhi,” he posted on X.

“On a large scale, desilting is done only on paper. I’m not talking about everybody but on a large scale, it is done only on paper not on the ground. The tenders are distributed even then the desilting is not being done which implies there is corruption. So what is the status of the third-party audit?” the AAP Minister said in the meeting conducted on June 28.

Bharadwaj directed Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar to conduct a third party audit of the claims of desilting of drains by agencies like PWD and MCD. The minister asked him to submit a list of drains which have been de-silted but nothing on done.

The video of the meeting was shared by the AAP Minister on X.

While sharing the video, Bharadwaj launched an attack on LG Saxena and said, “Truth of Delhi – Everyone is saying that the work of removing silt from drains and sewers in Delhi was not done properly. Due to this, there was waterlogging in the entire Delhi. Due to the same waterlogging, many people died due to electric shock in Delhi. Although it is the negligence of the coaching institute but a big conspiracy has been hatched against the people of Delhi. Although the department is not mine, the minister also agreed with the question. The government can neither transfer these officers nor take any action against them. Only LG Sahab can take action.”

“A minister gave evidence and complained of corruption in de-silting, but PWD Secretary Anbarasu IAS did not take any action for a year. The next year, they provide the evidence again but they are not ready to visit the spot. Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar IAS, who is the Chief Vigilance Officer, did not take any action. The meeting was conducted on June 28, 2024. It is in the hands of LG sir to take action,” he added.

Students are holding massive protests in Delhi’s Old Rajender Nagar area over the deaths of the three UPSC aspirants in a flooded basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle.

The bodies of the deceased were sent to the RML Hospital for an autopsy. The victims who died in the incident have been identified as Shreya Yadav, a native of Ambedkar Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana; and Nivin Dalwin, a resident of Kerala’s Ernakulam, told DCP Central M Harshavardhan told ANI.

Students are demanding immediate action against the authorities over the incident. Meanwhile, on Sunday, several leaders from different political parties reached the scene.

CPI MP V Sivadasan, who was present at the protest site, spoke to ANI, saying coacing centres in Delhi conduct classes and set up a library in the basement without proper permission from the government. He also said that he spoke with the family members of the victim.

“We have visited the spot of the incident and spoke to the family members of the victim. The lack of police and safety audits is a serious issue. This incident should not have happened. There is no proper drainage system in Delhi,” he told ANI.

Further, he said, “Coaching owners here conduct classes and set up a library in the basement without taking proper permission from the government and it is illegal to do so. We demand a safety audit of all the coaching centres and strict rules should be made against them. The government is promoting all these illegal coaching centres as the officials and authorities are collecting a huge amount of money from these coaching owners.”

Meanwhile, Delhi police on Sunday arrested two persons, the owner and coordinator of the IAS coaching centre, where three students lost their lives after the basement of the institute was filled with water.

Expressing grief over the mishap, Dharmendra Yadav, uncle of one of the deceased, Shreya Yadav, also claimed somberly that he was not informed about the death of his niece by the coaching institute or the administration.

He said that he learned about Shreya’s death from the news and wasn’t even permitted to view her body at the mortuary.

Speaking to ANI, Dharmendra Yadav said, “I received no information officially, either from the coaching institute or administration. I saw the news and approached them, I went to the mortuary and asked them to show me the face for identification but they denied it, saying it was a police case. They showed me a paper where her (Shreya Yadav) name was written.”

“When the news of students being deceased started coming up, … I called the coaching institute, and they said we couldn’t tell the name but two causalities had happened,” he said.

Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan also expressed condolences over the deaths of the students.

Tamil Nadu turning into West Bengal? Two opposition leaders murdered in less than 24 hours in DMK-ruled state

The recent murders of two opposition leaders in Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) ruled Tamil Nadu serve as a chilling reminder of the horrifying deaths of opposition leaders particularly those of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal. The shocking development also gave birth to a dreadful possibility of the state turning into another Bengal.

In the first instance, BJP worker Selvakumar was killed close to Sivaganga district in Tamil Nadu. He hailed from Velangulam village in Sivaganga and ran a brick kiln in the same area. He was also the district secretary of the party’s cooperative wing. On the night of 27th July, an anonymous group of individuals armed with dangerous weapons attacked him using a knife when he was on his two-wheeler and fled after committing the crime. The authorities became active as the region became tense after the shocking instance.

Shocked passersby who witnessed the scene informed the police who rushed to the location and seized the body before sending it to Sivaganga Government Medical College Hospital for postmortem. They have also registered a case and the matter is under investigation. BJP members and locals began to protest as they learned about the occurrence. They blocked the road and demanded immediate arrest of the perpetrators after which the Superintendent of Police (SP) arrived at the spot and assured that strict action would be taken against the culprits. The demonstrators then dispersed from there.

In another shocking incident, a worker of Palaniswami’s All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) party was viciously hacked to death in the Cuddalore area of Tamil Nadu, close to the Puducherry border. The victim was identified as Padmanabhan, a resident of Thirupapuliyur. He also owned a shop in the neighbourhood. He was heading towards Bagur village on the day of the incident when some unidentifiable individuals surrounded him which sparked a violent altercation that soon ended with his death.

Initial reports unveiled that Padmanabhan fell after the attackers rammed his two-wheeler with their four-wheeler following which they murdered him. Cops are still conducting an extensive inquiry to learn all the specifics of the case. Additionally, it has been revealed that he is the subject of an ongoing murder case, which might impact the course of the inquiry. A postmortem examination of his body has been ordered to ascertain the precise cause of death. Meanwhile, police are searching for the accused.

Notably, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Tamil Nadu president K Armstrong was hacked to death by a gang of sex men on 5th July in Chennai. They disguised themselves as delivery agents and assaulted him with sharp weapons. They ambushed him while he was having conversations with party officials in the vicinity of his home in the Sembium neighbourhood of the city. They absconded the crime scene afterwards. He was rushed to Chennai Hospital, but he died on the way. BSP supremo Mayawati called for justice in the case and demanded “punishment for the guilty.”

As the tragic death of 3 IAS aspirants raises questions on Municipal Corporation of Delhi, know who is Shelly Oberoi, the AAP mayor responsible for civic issues in the city

In a tragic incident on 27th July, three IAS aspirants – two girls, and a boy, lost their lives as several students remained trapped in the basement of a coaching institute named Rau’s IAS Study Circle in the Old Rajendra Nagar after heavy rains flooded the basement. After getting an alert, NDRF teams and Delhi Fire Services rushed to the spot and rescued all other students stuck in the flooded basement of the institute.

On Sunday, July 28, Delhi Police detained the owner and coordinator of Rau’s IAS Study Circle. They have also registered a case against the coaching institute, the management of the building, and those responsible for the maintenance of the drain at that location.

Following the tragic incident, students staged protests against the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) and the management of the coaching institute demanding that they should be held liable for the negligence.

Speaking to ANI, a UPSC aspirant named Yuvraj said, “MCD is responsible… they did not ensure safety measures. Both MCD and RAU’s IAS are at fault, they should be held jointly liable. “

Another student said that it was not a disaster but rather it was the negligence on the part of the MCD that led to the unfortunate incident. It is alleged that the locals had been raising complaints to the MCD asking them to ensure proper drainage and other civic amenities for several days but the civic body didn’t pay heed to their complaints.

The student said, “MCD calls it a disaster but I say this is negligence. Knee-deep water gathers in half an hour of rain. My landlord has been asking the councillor for days to clean the drain….”

Expressing frustration, a student remarked, “I think the main culprits here are the MCD and the institute’s director who neglected students’ interests.”

Meanwhile, the principal opposition party in the city-state, BJP, slammed the Aam Aadmi Party for the death of three IAS aspirants in the Old Rajender Nagar incident. The party has demanded an inquiry as to why the AAP-led MCD didn’t ensure proper drainage in the area and accused AAP of indulging in rampant corruption.

Delhi BJP Chief Virendra Sachdeva said, “There should be an inquiry into the corruption of Arvind Kejriwal, Atishi, and their government. Delhi Municipal Corporation’s corruption should be inquired. There should be an inquiry as to why the drainage was not cleaned. Will they order an inquiry into this?”

Additionally, according to media reports, it has been found that the coaching institute was given a fire safety certificate just 18 days before the incident. The certificate and the incident point towards major corruption in the issue of fire safety certificates by the AAP government in Delhi, because the certificate was issued despite several violations of fire safety norms which have become apparent after the tragedy.

Following massive criticism and allegations of corruption, negligence, and dereliction of duty in ensuring a proper drainage system, Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi reacted to the incident by issuing several instructions to the MCD Commissioner.

Shelly Oberoi has now instructed the MCD Commissioner to take strict action against coaching centres running illegal basements and against those who misuse the basements.

Incidentally, Shelly Oberoi, the AAP Mayor responsible for civic issues in Delhi was elected as the Delhi Mayor following massive controversies in the elections of the civic body.

Shelly Oberoi, Delhi Mayor elected after controversy-embroiled ‘multiple’ elections

Born in 1983, Shelly Oberoi was an academician before she entered the political field. She is a lifetime member of the Indian Commerce Association (ICA). She earned her B.Com degree from Janki Devi Memorial College of Delhi University and a Master’s Degree in Commerce from Himachal Pradesh University. She completed her PhD in Philosophy from the School of Management Studies (SOMS), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU). She also studied management at IIM, Kozhikode.

Oberoi also won best paper awards at different national and international conferences. She won a Gold medal (Prof Manubhai Shah Award) at the ICA Conference.

Shelly Oberoi was a Former Asst. Professor (Visiting Faculty) at Delhi University. She entered politics and joined the Aam Aadmi Party in 2013. She was the vice president of the women’s wing of the party till 2020.

She was elected to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) from Patel Nagar’s Ward Number 86 in the Delhi MCD elections held in 2022. Back then, AAP won the highest number of seats as it secured 134 out of 250 seats in the civic body. While BJP secured 104 seats in the municipal elections, Congress won 9 seats.

Shelly Oberoi was elected as the Delhi Mayor months later, on 22nd February 2023. She defeated BJP’s Rekha Gupta by 34 votes amid high-voltage drama during the mayoral elections that were held for the civic body after three failed attempts and a Supreme Court intervention. Alongside her, Aaley Iqbal was also elected as the Deputy Mayor during the February 2023 elections.

However, their term expired with the financial year on 31st March as the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act of 1957 mandates that fresh elections should be held for the position of mayor at the beginning of the new financial year in April.

Subsequently, she was re-elected as Delhi Mayor in fresh elections that were held on 24th April, 2024, as the BJP candidate Shikha Roy, a councillor from Delhi’s Greater Kailash withdrew her candidature. Deputy mayor, Aaley Mohammad Iqbal from AAP was also re-elected as his BJP rival, Soni Pandey also withdrew her candidature.

Delhi Mayor acted beyond her powers and gave a legally impermissible decision: Delhi High Court

Last year in May, two BJP councillors, Kamaljeet Sehrawat, and Shikha Roy, had submitted in the Delhi High Court that Mayor Shelly Oberoi acted in a malafide manner when she called for the re-election of six members of the MCD standing committee after finding the election results “politically unpalatable”.

Appearing for the BJP councillors, senior lawyers Mahesh Jethmalani and Jayant Mehta submitted that Oberoi invalidated one of the votes in a manner “unrecognised in law” and interdicted the election process. Mehta also stressed that there was no legal provision that gave the Mayor the authority to ask for re-election, a re-count, or to declare the election invalid.

Subsequently, on 23rd May 2023, Delhi HC set aside her decision to hold re-elections for 6 members of the MCD standing committee and directed her to declare the results of the poll held on February 24.

Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav said the mayor, also the returning officer, acted beyond her powers and her decision was legally impermissible.

The Judge had said that the act of the mayor (Shelly Oberoi) in rejecting the ballot after the stage of scrutiny and determination of quota was bad in law.

Shelly Oberoi accused of acting as AAP leader rather than Delhi Mayor

During her tenure as Delhi Mayor, Oberoi has been embroiled in a power tussle with the LG administration and accused of running the MCD in an authoritarian and unconstitutional manner, giving preference to extending her powers rather than ensuring better civic amenities and acting on MCD’s responsibilities.

Notably, during a special session of the MCD, she proposed vesting the powers of the standing committee in the MCD House and also approached the Supreme Court in this regard. In her plea, before the Supreme Court, she sought the apex court’s direction to allow the functions of the Standing Committee to be exercised by the MCD till the panel is constituted. BJP members had opposed the move, describing it as “illegal and unconstitutional“.

In September last year, Shelly Oberoi-led Delhi MCD hiked councillors’ allowance by 8,233.33% raising it from Rs 300 to Rs 25,000 per meeting.

Additionally, in the past, the councillors have accused her of engaging in partisan behaviour and acting as an AAP leader.

Leader of Opposition in the MCD, Raja Iqbal Singh had earlier accused Mayor Shelly Oberoi of engaging in partisan behaviour for “not inviting” BJP councillors to meetings.

Strikingly, ever since the Aam Aadmi Party formed its government in Delhi, it has been notorious for running after the consolidation of power and attempting to encroach on the powers vested in the Union government through its representative, the Lieutenant Governor. However, it has been time and again caught shirking its responsibilities, especially on issues of air and water pollution in Delhi. It has been embroiled in power tussle with the LG in an attempt to grab more powers from the Union government. Conspicuously, the latest tragedy in which three IAS aspirants lost their lives because of the alleged negligence of MCD in ensuring a better drainage system and legal compliance by the coaching institute, has exposed Delhi MCD under Mayor Shelly Oberoi.

‘There is a lot to learn from him’: Nikhil Kamath and Ranbir Kapoor heap praise on PM Modi, share stories about his personality and hardworking nature

On Saturday (27th July), actor Ranbir Kapoor and Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath expressed their heartfelt admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During an episode of ‘People by WTF’, Nikhil Kamath narrated, “I feel like I have had the privilege of being around him at a couple of events. And I think people read into that. But like, I respect him. I admire him. I’ll give you a story.”

He highlighted how PM Modi worked non-stop during his visit to the United States while the entrepreneur was tired.

“Once we were in the US. There were 3-4 of us with him. One year back. And we were in Washington for 3-4 days. I went there on my own. But he (PM Modi) was there. And he would do a speaking session with us and other American businessmen at 8am in the morning. He would go give a speech somewhere at 11am. Then he would go sit in the vice president something at 1pm/ 2pm. He would do something else at 4pm. Something else at 7pm. Something else at 11pm,” he stated.

Nikhil Kamath emphasised, “I was out by 8 and 9 in the evening. I was like, okay, I’m tired. After 2 days, I’m feeling sick. He was then going to Egypt to do the same thing all over again. I think his energy at his age. There’s a lot to learn…There is definitely so much to learn from him. And I feel like privileged to have had seen him in such close quarters.”

During the episode of ‘People by WTF’, Ranbir Kapoor reminisced how he was awestruck by the charming personality of PM Modi.

“He’s a great orator. But I remember the moment that we were sitting and he walked in and he got this magnetic charm about himself. And he came and he sat down and he spoke to each person something so personal. My father was going through treatment at that time, so he’s asking how the treatment is going and what’s happening and all of that. He was talking to Alia about something else. Vicky Kaushal about something else,” the actor stated.

“Like everything was very personal. And that kind of effort, you see in great men. Yeah. When they put that effort. Yeah. He doesn’t need to.
Yeah. And there are many, many achievers who put in that effort. And that says a lot about that person,” he added.

‘Living happily with two children’: Kerala High Court quashes POCSO case as victim and accused got married, says case would disrupt their married life

0

On 22nd July, Kerala High Court quashed a POCSO case against an accused as the accused and the victim had got married. The 2021 criminal case was filed against the man for kidnapping and raping a 17-year-old victim. The duo is now married and has two children. Justice A Badharudeen opined that though there is no question of settlement in the rape cases, in this case the matter has been quashed on humanitarian grounds so that the couple’s peaceful family life is not disturbed.

The court said, “Settlement of cases including the offence of rape and POCSO Act offences is not permissible under law. However, in the instant case, though the 1st accused after maintaining a relationship with the minor victim subjected her to sexual molestation and became pregnant, as of now, the 1st accused married the victim and now, they have been living happily with two children. In such cases, the tough nut standing in the way of settlement shall be crushed with humanitarian consideration as the hammer, to ensure the peaceful family living of the parties and most importantly to ensure the well-being of the children born to them.”

In 2021, the accused was booked under relevant sections of IPC and POCSO on the allegations that he kidnapped and impregnated a then-17-year-old victim. The victim’s mother was also arraigned as an accused as she failed to report the crime. In 2024, they filed an appeal in the Kerala High Court to quash the criminal case stating that the matter was settled between the two parties.

An affidavit was submitted in the High Court by the victim, who is now an adult, confirming that she was married to the accused. A copy of the marriage certificate was also submitted to the court. The victim’s counsel and the Public Prosecutor corroborated the claims made by the parties.

The court observed that compromise or settlement is not allowed in the cases of rape or POCSO cases. “These are crimes against the body of a woman which is her temple. These are offences which suffocate the breath of life and sully the reputation. And reputation, needless to emphasise, is the richest jewel one can conceive of in life,” the court said.

The court added that settlement in such cases could send a wrong message to society as if it was allowed as a norm, habitual offenders might exploit settlement options to force the victims to drop the case. However, the proceedings were allowed in this case as it could lead to the collapse of the victim’s family life.

The court said, “There is no necessity to continue criminal proceedings to retain them in the hazards of litigation and to collapse their married life and the well-being of the children. Given the matter, in deviation from the general principle, this is a fit case, where quashment is liable to be allowed.”

Background of the case

OpIndia accessed the copy of judgment in the matter. As per the court documents, a case was registered in 2021 at Chengamanad Police Station Ernakulam, Kerala. The FIR noted that at 10:30 AM on 21 February 2021, the accused kidnapped the victim from the lawful custody of her parents and raped her. After that, the minor victim got pregnant.
