Filmmaker Shyam Benegal, who was signatory to a letter that maligned Jai Shri Ram, passes away at the age of 90

Filmmaker Shyam Benegal passed away on Monday at the age of 90 after battling a chronic kidney-related illness. Benegal breathed his last around 6:30 pm at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai.

Benegal was admitted to the intensive care unit at Wockhardt Hospital in Mumbai, just days after celebrating his 90th birthday on December 14.

The filmmaker Shyam Benegal is survived by his wife, Nira Benegal, and daughter, Pia Benegal.

Pia Benegal revealed that her father had been battling chronic kidney disease for several years. “He passed away at 6:38 pm at Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai Central. His condition had worsened significantly, and that ultimately led to his passing,” she shared.

Benegal was celebrated for his films such as AnkurMandiManthan, and others, which gained prominence in the mid-70s and 80s as hallmarks of India’s parallel cinema movement.
