Consequently, Tripura Police registered an FIR against Shokeen over racial remarks.
Shokeen’s viral video
The video shared by Union Cabinet Minister Kiren Rijiju showed Amir Shokeen mocking and insulting a tribal man from Tripura with racial slurs. It shows Amir asking the Tripura youth, “Are you China’s president, Chingping?” The man politely told him that he was from Tripura and not China, but Amir continued to denigrate the man by referring to Tripura as “ch**tpura.”
Throughout the video, Amir kept disrespecting the man and even touched his private part when he tried to disengage from him by focusing on his mobile phone. While Amir engaged in such disparaging behaviour, people present at the scene laughed and encouraged him.
After facing strong backlash for his actions, Amir Shokeen posted an apology video, claiming that he knew nothing about the state he referred to as “Tripuram”. He also claimed that the video was scripted. After finding out that the Tripura CM had directed legal action on the video, Amir posted a second apology video, clarifying that he did not intend to hurt anyone.
