‘Manmohan Singh was against corruption’: Anna Hazare, who led the anti-corruption movement against UPA-II in 2011

Anna Hazare, who led the famous anti-corruption movement and demanded Lokpal legislation that shook the UPA-2 government to its very core, on Friday (December 27) said former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was against corruption.

Expressing his condolences on Singh’s demise, Hazare remarked, “Everyone born must eventually pass away, but some leave behind lasting memories and a legacy. Singh redefined the country’s economy.” He recalled Singh as a leader who always prioritised the welfare of the nation and society.

Reflecting on their interactions during the Lokpal protests, Hazare shared that Singh had invited him for discussions and made swift decisions regarding the Lokpal and Lokayukta Act. “He was steadfastly against corruption and consistently focused on serving the country and its people,” Hazare added.

Highlighting Singh’s contributions to India’s economic reforms, Hazare said, “Manmohan Singh may no longer be with us physically, but he will forever remain in the hearts of the people.”

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who was the head of Indian Government from 2004 to 2014, passed away on Thursday, December 26. 

After the former PM’s health deteriorated, he was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi, where doctors declared him dead.
