RCB victory parade: 11 dead, over 50 injured in stampede outside Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru

At least 11 people were dead and scores injured in a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the celebraitons for the first vitory of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) in Indian Premier League (IPL). Over 50 people have been injured in the incident.

The injured have been admitted to the Bowring hospital and Lady Curzon Hospital. As per reports, a child was among those who died in the stampede.

The victory parade was organised in Bengaluru after RCB ended its 18-year IPL trophy drought on Tuesday night as it defeated Punjab Kings in a thrilling contest. Twin events, first at the state assembly and then the stadium, were organised by the state government just a day after the victory, giving very less time for the administration and the police to make proper arrangements.

The celebration was reportedly shortened after the stampede outside the stadium, however, it was not cancelled.

Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar said that there was no fault of police, as the crowd was beyond anyone’s control.

Taling about the unfortunate incident, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia said, “Organisers should have planned RCB’s IPL-winning celebrations better.”

Karnataka BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra alleged that the felicitation programme was held without police permission due to CM Siddaramaiah’s pressure. He demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident.
