The immediate concern comes from a statement made by Pawan Goenka, who said that ISRO would eventually not manufacture launch vehicles and that the work would be carried out by private companies or PSUs.

Named after Dr Vikram Sarabhai, regarded as the father of India's space programme, Vikram-1 is a 24-metre-tall, four-stage launch vehicle built primarily using lightweight carbon-composite materials.

PM Modi wished everyone on the occasion of the first 'National Space Day' lauding the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for making the country proud. "Our Government has taken a series of futuristic decisions relating to this sector and we will do even more in the times to come," PM Modi said.

ISRO Chairman S Somanath also recalled Modi's support dating back to his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat.

The team of scientists, who worked on this project, were led by the then ISRO Chairman K Radhakrishnan.
