A war of words has erupted within the Trinamool Congress after a student leader linked to the party was accused of rape. Controversial remarks by senior leaders triggered backlash, forcing the party to issue a clarification and deepen internal divisions.

"He (Newton Das) must be a voter in Bangladesh. He was born there. He had come to India after Covid-19 outbreak to settle some land disputes. I do not know where he lives now. I don't know how he became a voter here," the accused's brother Tapas Das told TV9 Bangla.
The Supreme Court has recently slammed Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers and cancelled the bail of five person who were accused of targeted families for supporting BJP during the 2021 in West Bengal, saying such incidents were "grave attacks on the roots of democracy".
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on Mamata Banerjee government on Thursday and said West Bengal needs freedom from "politics of violence, appeasement, riots and corruption" and that the people are looking towards "BJP's development model".
