Bangladesh: Protesters demand abolition of 1972 constitution, elimination of President, Army Chief posts

While there are speculations that the student organization might announce a new republic in Bangladesh, it remains unclear whether the nation will be declared an Islamic state or a secular republic.

While the world is looking forward to the celebrations of the upcoming new year, India’s neighbouring country Bangladesh is facing another crisis. Reports suggest that the protesters in the country have now demanded the interim government installed after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government to abolish the 1972 Constitution, established during the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It is speculated that the current interim government might make this historic announcement on the last day of the 2024 year.

As per the reports, along with abolishing the constitution, key positions such as President and Army Chief might also be eliminated if the interim government heeds to the demands put forth by the protesters. The ‘student’ organization that spearheaded the so-called revolution might further consider declaring a new republic to replace the existing government structure.

While there are speculations that the student organization might announce a new republic in Bangladesh, it remains unclear whether the nation will be declared an Islamic state or a secular republic. Reports suggest that this decision might escalate tensions for India as it might face diplomatic challenges under the evolving circumstances.

At present the interim government is in place in Bangladesh, replacing the ousted Sheikh Hasina government. This interim administration is led by Mohammad Yunus who has associations with several terrorist groups. Yunus has been known to extend significant support to fundamentalist groups, causing unease in several nations, including India. The United States has also expressed concerns regarding the ongoing speculations in Bangladesh.

Bangladeshi student leader Hasnat Abdullah has commented on the situation and said that the 1972 Constitution is a “Mujibist law” and it may be buried by 2024 year-end. Additionally, he has voiced strong criticism against India, stating the 1972 Constitution allowed India to interfere in Bangladesh’s affairs. Hasnat announced that a declaration will be made on the afternoon of December 31st at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, outlining the vision for the future of Bangladesh.

It is believed that the leader is in constant touch with the Pakistani administration. Recently, Yunus and Pakistan PM Sharif met at the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation meeting. It is reported that the two Islamic countries are also planning to escalate the business opportunities offering eased trade practices to each other.

Further updates in the case are underway.
