Fugitive drug kingpin Virender Singh Basoya has been extradited to India from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Informing about the development on 14th August, Union Home Minister Amit Shah termed Basoya’s extradition a “new milestone” in the policy of zero tolerance against narcotics.
Minister Shah hailed the National Crime Bureau (NCB) for tracking down the criminal and securing his return to the country. He has been taken into custody by the NCB and will be produced before a special court.

By tracing the criminal through a top-to-bottom and bottom-to-top approach, our agencies have once again proven that no matter where drug traffickers hide, they cannot escape the long arm of Indian law,” Shah posted on X on Friday (14th August).

The action comes as part of the Modi government’s three-year national plan aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks. The plan laid down in a Vision Document on Drug Control (2026-2029) was unveiled by Shah in June this year along with the Narcotics Control Bureau Annual Report-2025. At that time, the Union Home Minister remarked that the government would act against the narcotics ecosystem with such force that “it will not be able to recover for decades.”
He added that the government has been working to make the existing anti-narcotics framework more stringent by examining gaps in the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and reviewing the classification of precursor chemicals and psychotropic substances that are used in drug production.
Who is Virender Singh Basoya?
Virender Singh Basoya’s extraction resulted from international legal action and inter-agency coordination. A non-bailable warrant issued against him by a Delhi court enabled Indian agencies to initiate red notices and pursue extradition proceedings through diplomatic channels in the UAE.
The fugitive drug kingpin has been accused of running an international multi-crore cocaine and drug syndicate. In 2024, the Delhi Police seized over 500 kilograms of cocaine and arrested five persons, including Basoya’s associate Jitendra Pal Singh and Tushar Goyal. Basoya has reportedly offered Goyal, the main accused in the case, ₹3 crore per delivery of 100 consignments. Singh was supervising the drug cartel’s operations in India.
Basoya was reportedly arrested in a case earlier but was released on bail. A day before his son’s wedding, the Pune police had raided locations in Delhi and seized drugs worth Rs 3000 crore, including mephedrone. However, he managed to flee to Dubai after police were alerted about his presence at his son’s wedding.
