Assam STF arrests second suspect in Pakistan-linked espionage case near Guwahati

The Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) has arrested a second person in connection with an espionage case involving the sharing of sensitive information with a Pakistan Intelligence Operative (PIO). Ritesh Kumar Singh, 39, was arrested on October 5 from Guwahati’s Satgaon area during the ongoing investigation.

Singh, who is originally from Begusarai in Bihar, was staying in a rented house in Satgaon. Police first took him into custody for questioning and later arrested him in connection with STF Police Station Case No. 09/2026.

Second arrest in two days

The latest arrest came a day after the STF arrested 31-year-old Abhishek Kumar Singh. Abhishek was picked up from his rented accommodation in the Gandhinagar area of Satgaon during the intervening night of October 3 and 4.

According to police, Abhishek was in contact with a Pakistan Intelligence Operative and had been passing sensitive information linked to security forces. Investigators are now looking into Ritesh’s role and whether he helped Abhishek in carrying out these activities.

Preliminary investigation has found that Ritesh was also involved in espionage-related activities and had shared sensitive information about security forces with a Pakistan Intelligence Operative, police said.

Army intelligence input led to arrests

The investigation began after intelligence inputs were received from the Gajraj Military Intelligence unit based in Tezpur. The inputs were shared with the Assam Police STF, which then developed further information and carried out the arrests.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also confirmed that the operation was based on inputs from the Army’s Gajraj Corps, highlighting the coordination between military intelligence and the state police.

Both Ritesh and Abhishek were staying in rented rooms in the Satgaon area. The locality is close to the Narengi Army camp, an important military installation in the region. According to STF sources, the two men were trying to keep a low profile, and contractual employment at the Army camp could have been used as a cover to collect information.

Police sources said the two men passed important information related to the Army installation to the Pakistan Intelligence Operative through online platforms.

Mobile phones, SIM cards and documents seized

During the operations carried out on October 4 and 5, STF personnel recovered mobile phones, SIM cards and documents described as restricted in nature. Investigators are examining these materials to understand the activities of the two men and the information that may have been shared.

A case was registered by the STF on October 4, and both arrested persons are currently in STF custody.

Investigators are now trying to determine what information was shared, how long the communication with the Pakistani intelligence operative had continued and whether more people are connected to the network.

The Assam STF is continuing its investigation to establish the full extent of the espionage activities and identify any other persons who may have been involved.
