17 undertrial prisoners escape from Tamil Nadu Jail after attacking staff; MK Stalin takes dig at Vijay government

Seventeen undertrial prisoners escaped from the Thekkampatti sub-jail near Andipatti in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district on Monday night, 26th October, after attacking prison personnel who entered their cell to help an inmate reported to be suffering from an epileptic seizure. By Tuesday morning, 27th October, police had arrested four of the escapees, while a search was underway for the remaining 13.

The incident has triggered a major manhunt across neighbouring districts, with police setting up checkpoints at 16 locations in Dindigul and forming 17 special teams to track down the escaped prisoners. Authorities in Dindigul, Madurai and Idukki have also been alerted, and photographs of the escapees have been circulated among police officials.

Nine jail personnel, including two head constables, have been suspended in connection with the incident.

How did the Prisoners escape from Theni jail?

As per the preliminary inquiries, all 17 inmates were lodged in the same cell when the incident took place. At around 10.30 pm, some prisoners called the warden on duty, claiming that one of the inmates was having an epileptic seizure and needed medical assistance.

When the prison staff opened the cell and entered, the inmates attacked them before escaping from the jail at around 11 pm. Three prison personnel were injured in the incident.

Thangapandi, a Grade II police personnel attached to the Theni district jail, suffered a head injury and was admitted to the Government Hospital at G Vilakku. Two other jail personnel sustained minor injuries, according to the police.

MK Stalin mocks Vijay government with ‘Prison Break’ jibe

The jailbreak has triggered a political attack by DMK chief MK Stalin against the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister Vijay.

Taking a dig at the state’s law-and-order situation, Stalin compared the incident to the popular American crime drama Prison Break. He also continued his recent attack on the ruling party, which he had labelled a “Breaking Bad party” following the arrest of one of its functionaries in connection with a major narcotics seizure.

Reacting to the Theni jailbreak on Tuesday, 27th October, Stalin wrote on social media, “Following Breaking Bad, a Prison Break has now begun in Tamil Nadu! I thought it was only those released on bail who went unmonitored; it turns out this administration is so incompetent that it even lets prisoners escape from within the jails.”

He described the incident as the most daring jailbreak since 1995 and called the Vijay government “good for nothing”.

Stalin also questioned how such a large number of prisoners could escape despite advances in security and surveillance systems. “It is said that this is the first time since 1995 that such a large number of prisoners have escaped at once. It is unacceptable for this to happen in 2026, a time when security arrangements and surveillance systems should be advanced,” he added.

The Home Department falls directly under Chief Minister Vijay, making the latest jailbreak a political issue for the state government as well.
