Few days after Darul Uloom Deoband had issued a fatwa declaring nail polish as un-Islamic, clerics of Majlis-e-Shura, a religious conglomerate in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, issued a dictat declaring musical nights and beauty parlours as un-Islamic.

President of Majlis-e-Shura told in an interview given to Times Now that Parda is a duty in Islam. When there is a wedding party or musical night, men and women dance together which is prohibited in Islam. He also said that musical nights were stopped in Kishtwar after the fatwa was issued. But around one or two weeks ago, these musical nights started again. “We will try to curb these by citing Quran and Hadis to the people as we do not own any army or police station or jail to enforce the fatwa”, he said.
The cleric blamed the women who ‘roam’ around at night for compromising their modesty. He said that such women can handle things themselves but they blame the police instead. He even advised the non-muslim women to cover themselves.
The cleric called beauty parlours as un-Islamic as according to him women do not properly cover themselves in beauty parlours which is bad in Islam.
Bizzare fatwas have been very common recently. The Darul-Uloom has a number of fatwas against, DJ music, life insurance and even letting the shopkeeper help while trying new bangles. Women who have defied fundamentalism have also faced hostility and threats from fundamentalist elements.
