Jwalapur is a small town located near Haridwar, Uttarakhand. On 29th November, it was gripped in communal tension as Alisha, now Aditi had married Gagan and eloped. The duo had been married for only four days when they claimed a threat to their lives from their families.
Police spruced up the security when a nearby mosque announced on the speaker and asked people from the girl’s side to gather together.
One of the residents of Jwalapur says that such communal tensions are unprecedented in the little town. “The area is known for Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb. Things did not escalate to this level even during the 1992 Babri Masjid demolition. But today, because of this small issue, the communal tension has increased owing to periodic announcements from the mosque,” he said.
The couple has now gone into hiding. As per reports, last Wednesday, Gagan eloped with Alisha, who now goes by the name Aditi, following which the girl’s parents lodged a police complaint. Mamta Vohra, SP (city) also reached the place to ensure law and order is maintained since the couple belonged to different religions.
On Saturday, when the couple approached the High Court seeking protection from their families, it was revealed that the duo had gotten married a couple of months back itself. The High Court has intervened and asked the police to give the couple, as well as their families, protection in case tension flares up.
Speaking to OpIndia, sub-inspector Nitesh Sharma, Jwalapur Police station said that the law and order situation in the town is under control. Since the couple has approached the High Court seeking protection, the police will be filing an affidavit regarding the same next week. The police are appraising the families of security and ensuring that the law and order situation is maintained.
