CAA is an Act of the country, it will be notified and implemented before Lok Sabha elections: Home Minister Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said that the Citizenship Amendment Act, which was passed by the Parliament in December 2019, will be notified and implemented before the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

“CAA is an Act of the country, it will be definitely be notified. It will be notified before the polls. CAA will be implemented by the polls, and there should be no confusion around it,” Shah said speaking at the ET Now-Global Business summit here in the national capital.

“CAA was a promise of the Congress government. When the country was divided and the minorities were persecuted in those countries, Congress had assured the refugees that they were welcome in India and they will be provided with Indian citizenship. Now they are backtracking,” Shah said.

He said in categorical terms that CAA was brought in to provide citizenship and not to take away anyone’s citizenship.

“Minorities in our country, and specially our Muslim community, are being provoked. CAA cannot snatch away anyone’s citizenship because there is no provision in the Act. CAA is an act to provide citizenship to refugees who were persecuted in Bangladesh and Pakistan.”

The CAA, introduced by the Narendra Modi government, aims to confer Indian citizenship to persecuted non-Muslim migrants, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians, who migrated from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and arrived in India before December 31, 2014.

Following the passage of the CAA by Parliament in December 2019 and its subsequent presidential assent, significant protests erupted in various parts of the country.

Speaking about the upcoming Lok Sabha polls the home minister said that this election was about corruption against development.

“This election is not about I.N.D.I.A vs NDA. This is about corrupt governance vs. zero tolerance against corruption. This election is about those who want to secure national security vs. those who, in the name of foreign policy, endanger national security” the Union Home Minister said.

Uttarakhand: 60-year-old Hamid electrocutes his 52-year-old wife to death in front of their minor daughter over doubts of extramarital affair

An elderly man electrocuted his spouse on 8th February in Uttarakhand’s Roorkee because of doubts about an extramarital relationship. The accused then turned himself in at the police station following the homicide, reported Hindustan Live. He was taken into custody by the police after they filed a murder report on his son’s complaint. The incident transpired in Uttarakhand’s Landhaura near Roorkee. The culprit has been identified as 60-year-old Hamid, a resident of Budhana in Uttar Pradesh.

Hamid lives with his family near the bus stand in Landhaura. On the fateful day, the perpetrator slept in one room with his 52-year-old wife Khatoon and 6-year-old daughter Shabnam while other family members were in another room. When others were in deep sleep, he reportedly placed one end of an electric wire in his wife’s mouth and attached the other end to the plug at around 1 AM. Hamid’s wife died on the spot due to electrocution. Hamid then headed to the police station on the night itself and surrendered, confessing to what he had done. 

Authorities were also shocked to learn about the crime. Hamid claimed that he killed his wife because he had doubts about her morality. He was arrested and the deceased’s body was sent for post-mortem. The cops launched a murder case on the submission of Hamid’s son Nadeem. According to Naveen Chauhan, the police in-charge, Hamid suspected that his wife had bad character and ended her life.

The family members mentioned that Shabnam opened her eyes when her father was killing her mother. She remained quiet out of terror when he threatened to murder her as well. Therefore, the family only came to know about the horrifying development after the offender went to the cops.

The district court of Varanasi’s decision to allow Hindus to pray in the Vyas cellar of the Gyanvapi structure has ruffled the feathers of Mamata Banerjee’s minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury. Chowdhury has gone on to threaten Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath saying that if he comes to Bengal, they will surround him and not allow him to go back.

The TMC leader even sought a ban on Hindus being allowed to do puja in the Gyanvapi structure and demanded that the Hindu worshippers “vacate the Gyanvapi mosque immediately”.

“With the court’s assistance, they have forcibly begun performing puja beneath the mosque. Is Yogi Adityanath educated or not? When the CM of Uttar Pradesh visits Bengal, we shall surround him with full force. He won’t be permitted to leave Bengal if he sits anywhere. We aim to get Gyanvapi vacated. We don’t visit any temples; you are free to pray there as much as you like, but just because you are in charge of the state doesn’t mean you can destroy masjids and begin worshipping there instead,” the TMC threatened.

He added, “The Hindu worshippers have forcefully started offering prayers at Gyanvapi mosque. I would tell them to vacate the premises immediately,” Siddiqullah Chowdhury said while attending a Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind rally in Kolkata, West Bengal.

“That (Gyanvapi) mosque has been there for more than 800 years. How will they demolish it?” he queried.

Varanasi court allows puja in Vyas Ji Ka Tehkhana at Gyanvapi complex

TMC’s influential Muslim leader Siddiqullah Chowdhury’s divisive remarks came as the district court of Varanasi ruled on Wednesday (31st January) that the Hindus have the right to worship in the Vyas cellar of the Gyanvapi structure. The court has ordered the district administration to make arrangements for worship in the basement within 7 days. This cellar is below the so-called mosque inside the structure. Now regular worship rituals will take place here as per the court’s order. The puja will be performed by the Kashi Vishwanath Trust Board.

The Vyas Ji Ka Tehkhana is one of the four basement chambers at the Gyanvapi complex, which is managed by the Vyas family. As per the family, they have a long history of association with the temple since 1551. However, the worship was stopped in December 1993 on the orders of the state govt.

The court order states that there is enough evidence showing that Vyas family has been worshipping there since the British period and they have been doing it up to December 1993. The court notes that materials related to Hindu rituals, several ancient Hindu idols and other materials of religious significance have been found in the basement. It is needed to worship the idols on a regular basis, the court said.

Importantly, the court order states that the state govt had stopped the worship under the basement without any authority to do so. Therefore, the court ordered the administration to make arrangements for worship in the basement.

Mamata Banerjee’s minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury’s anti-Hindu rants

Mamata Banerjee’s close aide Siddiqullah Chowdhury is not new to controversies. In 2021 he sparked a new controversy by mocking Hindu sentiments and making veiled threats over the issue of cow slaughter in West Bengal. He said that no one can stop cow slaughter in West Bengal.

Ahead of the upcoming State Legislative elections, he said, “Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath had come here and said that if BJP comes to power, then it will end cow slaughter in the State.” He alleged, “Cow slaughter has been happening in Bengal for the past 1000-1200 years. Everyone eats beef, including Muslims and others. What has beef got to do with votes? The attempt is to further the Hindu mentality.”

Furthermore, he claimed that the image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi had been tarnished after the Ram Mandir verdict. 

Siddiqullah is the same person who had stated in September 2018 that the Quran will prevail over the Constitution and had also expressed his displeasure towards the ordinance banning instant Triple Talaq.

Mamata Banerjee’s close aide Siddiqullah is also the President of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (West Bengal). After Trinamool Congress’s (TMC) embarrassing defeat in the Sagardighi assembly bypoll, Mamata had constituted a 4 member committee of four Muslim legislators and ministers to look into the reasons for the defeat. The committee was headed by none other than Siddiqullah Chowdhury who had then said that Banerjee had sought a detailed report on why Muslim voters turned away from the TMC  although she is running so many welfare schemes for them.

Indian-origin man dies in Washington days after life-threatening assault, killing of Indians in US continues unabated

On Wednesday (7th February), a 41-year-old Indian-origin man named Vivek Taneja succumbed to his injuries after being grievously assaulted by an unidentified man in downtown Washington in the United States.

As per reports, Taneja was attacked at around 2’o o’clock in the night outside the Shoto restaurant on the 1100 block of 15th Street Northwest in Washington. The incident took place on 2nd February this year.

When the cops reached the site of crime, they found the victim on the pavement. Vivek Taneja was thereafter rushed to the hospital in a critical condition.

Reportedly, the Indian-origin man and an unidentified person were involved in a heated argument outside the Shoto restaurant, post which the former was mercilessly assaulted.

After being knocked to the ground, Taneja hit his head on the pavement and became unconscious. He succumbed to his injuries five days later i.e. 7th February 2024 at the hospital.

The cops are now probing the case as a homicide.’ The police have released the picture of a suspect caught on a surveillance camera. They are seeking public assistance in apprehending the man.

As per a report by Crunchbase, Vivek Tanjena was the President/co-founder of Dynamo Technologies and led the company’s strategic, growth, and partnership initiatives”.

He graduated from George Mason University in Virginia and lived in Alexandria. The Indian man is now survived by his wife and his children.

Attacks on Indians continue unabated in the US

This is the 6th death of an Indian/ Indian-origin man in the United States this year. Recently, a 23-year-old Indian student Sameer Kamath was found dead in Warren County in Indiana. He was a doctoral candidate in mechanical engineering at Purdue University.

Shreyas Reddy, who was a student at the Linder School of Business, was also found dead in Cincinnati in Ohio. But, the cause of his death remains unknown.

Before him, Vivek Saini and Neel Acharya were also found dead in the same week. Notably, Neel Acharya was also a student at the Purdue University. His body was found at the campus on January 30.

Another Indian student Vivek Saini was brutally killed with repeated blows from a hammer by a homeless man inside a store in Lithonia, Georgia, US on January 29.

Earlier on January 20, Akul Dhawan, an 18-year-old Indian-American student, was found dead near the University of Illinois. 

In the wake of recent incidents involving the deaths of Indian students in the United States, US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti reassured that Washington is committed to make sure that United States remains a safe destination for Indian students.

Every party claims victory in Pakistan elections as the counting of ballot papers continues

Despite the delay in Pakistan’s election results, there seems to be no hint as to who will emerge victorious. Then again, experts had already declared that elections in the banana republic of Pakistan are a “sham”.

On Friday, 9th February, former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s party, the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) won 12 seats.

The daily, citing provisional results of the Election Commission of Pakistan, said that independent candidates backed by jailed former prime minister Imran Khan’s party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) had won 8 seats.

The independent candidates backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) are leading with 73 seats in a tight contest with two major parties, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistani local media reported.

According to the unofficial results called by Geo News for 163 out of total 266 seats, PTI-backed independent candidates are leading on 73 seats, followed by PML-N on 48 and PPP on 35.

However, the provisional results have only been released for 72 seats by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Dawn reported.

As per ECP, PTI-baked independents are leading on 28 seats, followed by a tight contest between PML-N (19 seats) and PPP (18 seats).

Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif claimed that his party has emerged as the’single-largest’ party and wants to lead the country to prosperity while developing peaceful relations with neighbours.

At the same time, former PM and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan on Saturday released a ‘victory speech’ in his AI-enabled voice, saying that the ‘London Plan’ of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif failed with the massive turnout of voters on polling day.

Although the two main political leaders from two different parties are claiming victory in the general elections, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has not yet announced the final poll results.

Meanwhile, according to the unofficial provisional results reported by Geo News for 241 out of 266 seats, the independent candidates, mostly backed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) are leading with 97 seats.

The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which has emerged as the single largest party, is trailing with 72 seats, followed by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) at 52 seats.

ED takes cognisance of CBI FIR in 25 crore bribery case, registers money laundering case against former NCB officer Sameer Wankhede

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has registered a  money laundering case against Sameer Wankhede, the former zonal director of Mumbai’s Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), officials said on Saturday.

In addition to Wankhede, three other NCB officers have been summoned for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

“ED registered a case against former Mumbai NCB zonal director Sameer Wankhede. ED has now started an investigation into the money laundering case against Sameer Wankhede. ED has also summoned three NCB officers for questioning,” said the Enforcement Directorate.

Last year, the CBI booked Wankhede for allegedly demanding Rs 25 crore as a bribe for not framing Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan in the drugs-on-crime case. The agency said that the deal was closed for Rs 18 crore, adding that Wankhade’s assets were not proportionate to his known sources of income.

Other corruption charges against Sameer Wankhede and other NCB officials were also in process. The FIR copy said he was not able to justify expenses made during his foreign visit.

Wankhede has alleged that he was being punished for being a patriot.

Wankhede raided Cordelia Cruise and arrested actor Shah Rukh Khan’s son, Aryan Khan, in an alleged drug case.

On Friday (9th February) night, a scuffle broke out at the Jawaharlal Nehru University between students belonging to Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Left organisations.

The incident took place during a general body meeting (UGBM) of the varsity, which is organised each year before the student body elections in JNU.

During the meeting, members of all student organisations were present. According to reports, a heated argument ensued between students belonging to the ABVP and leftist organisations (All India Students’ Association and Students’ Federation of India).

Soon after, leftist goons threatened ABVP members to leave the meeting and then proceeded to attack them. According to JNU President Umesh Chandra, they also hurled casteist slurs against tent house workers operating the sound system.

Chandra added that the leftist students also attacked ABVP members with ‘Dafli’. On the other hand, JNU council member Anagha Pradeep claimed that ABVP students ‘disrupted’ the general body meeting (UGBM) and refused to recognise the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) as a legal body.

Members of the ABVP, who were injured during the assault by leftist goons, were admitted to the Safdarjung Hospital for treatment.

In a statement, ABVP stated, “In the heart of Bharat’s educational hub Jawaharlal Nehru University a chilling reality unfolds. What was meant to be a platform for free thought and academic pursuit has turned into a battleground for communist ideological supremacy. ABVP-JNU strongly condemns the attack by leftist goons on common students and ABVP activists during UGBM and demands immediate action against the culprits.”

Reportedly, no police complaint has been filed so far in connection to the incident.

A riotous mob attacked police officers and the Haldwani Municipal Corporation team on Thursday (8th February), injuring over 300 officers. The mob attacked the police and the municipal corporation team after they demolished an illegal madarsa built on illegally encroached government land. Speaking to IndiaToday, Hema Joshi, a police officer deployed during the riots said that the police team had to run for their lives during the violence. Joshi added that she was not sure if she would come out alive safely.

“We tried to run for our lives but got stuck in the narrow lanes. I got really scared and I wasn’t sure if I would come out safely,” Joshi said.

Officer Joshi stated that all roads were blocked because the rioters burned down all vehicles parked near the roads. “It seemed like they were waiting for the right time to attack us”, Joshi said.

 “We were deployed at the location at 4.30 PM and the rioters attacked us immediately. The attack seemed pre-planned”, another police officer Munesh said. Joshi added that when the rioters started stone pelting, the police tried to bring the situation under control, however, the violent mob did not listen.

As reported earlier, a woman officer injured in the riots said, “We sought refuge in a house to shield ourselves from the stone-throwing when approximately 15 -20 individuals barged in, attacked us, stones were being hurled on us from all the sides, even from the rooftops. They also attempted to set the house ablaze, evidently with the intent to burn us alive. They wanted to burn us alive.”

The officer informed that the rioters abused the person who saved the police officials and went on to damage his house. “We barely managed to survive. There was stone pelting from all directions. The bylanes had been blocked. We managed to send out our locations. The man who saved us was attacked. His house was damaged. Eventually, the force came and rescued us. But even during the rescue, shards of glass were being thrown at us. We somehow made it through,” the police officer said.

Another police officer who escaped the attack in Haldwani stated that the rioters came from the streets and hurled stones. The police officer said that bullets were fired at him when he returned. Machete-wielding Islamist rioters also opened fire on them. The rioters destroyed a municipal corporation tractor, a patrol vehicle, and many motorcycles.

Meanwhile, in a press conference on Friday, Nainital DM Vandana Singh said that the Haldwani violence against the police and municipal corporation team was pre-planned. “The demolition drive started peacefully, the force was deployed for prevention…Stones were pelted on our Municipal Corporation’s team…It was planned that the day the demolition drive will be conducted, the forces would be attacked…The first mob with stones were dispersed & the second mob that came in had petrol bombs. This was unprovoked and our team did not use any force…,” Singh said.

It is pertinent to note that the action by the police municipal corporation authorities against the illegal construction on government land was taken after the Uttarakhand High Court did not grant relief to the petitioners Safia Malik and others seeking a stay on the demolition exercise.

Extending his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao was picked for India’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Bharat Ratna’, his son Prabhakar Rao on Friday said his father contributed a lot to the country through his policies and made a historic difference to the nation.

Speaking to ANI on Friday, Prabhakar Rao said, “It’sD not only for the family but for the admirers and followers of Narasimha Rao on being chosen for the Bharat Ratna (posthumously). We extend our sincere gratitude to PM Narendra Modi for taking the initiative to bestow the country’s highest prize on PV Narasimha Rao.”

“Narasimha Rao had a lifelong association with politics and grew as a statesman while contributing a lot to the country with his visionary leadership. His land reforms and, especially, the economic reforms made a historic difference to India. His services and leadership were recognised globally,” he added.

Earlier PV Narasimha Rao’s family members paid tributes to the former PM at PV Gyan Bhoomi at Necklace Road in Hyderabad after the announcement that he will be conferred posthumously with the Bharat Ratna.

Narasimha Rao was Prime Minister of the country from June 21, 1991 to May 16, 1996. He was born on June 28, 1921 in Karimnagar.

Israeli Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, also hailed the decision to confer former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao with India’s highest civilian honour on Friday.

He recalled that under Rao’s leadership in 1992, India and Israel had established diplomatic relations.

“Congratulations to PV Narasimha Rao on this recognition. In 1992, during his tenure as PM, diplomatic relations between India and Israel were established. 32 years later, these relationships flourish like very few do,” Gilon posted on X.

Former Prime Ministers PV Narasimha Rao and Choudhary Charan Singh as well as Green Revolution pioneer MS Swaminathan will be conferred the Bharat Ratna posthumously, adding to the two receipients announced earlier– late socialist leader and two-time Bihar chief minister Karpoori Thakur and former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani. After Islamists ran riots in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani district over the demolition of an illegally constructed structure which they labelled as a madarsa, tensions gripped the Bareilly district in Uttar Pradesh. Thousands of followers of Ittehad-e-Millat Council chief Tauqeer Raza Khan took to the streets and pelted stones after the Islamic cleric was detained by the police for giving a ‘jail bharo’ call over Gyanvapi case.

According to reports, one person was injured in the stone pelting that took place in the Shahmat Ganj area in Bareilly.

The incident happened after the IMC chief on Thursday, gave a ‘jail bharo andolan’ (fill the prison) call, a form of civil disobedience and incited his supporters to take to the streets to launch a fight over the disputed structure at Gyanvapi.

The Bareilly police as a preventive measure detained Maulana Taufeeq Raza Khan for giving a ‘jail bharo’ call over the Gyanvapi matter. The police, however, released the cleric immediately after which he returned to his house.

However, as per his call, after the Friday Namaz, thousands of Taufeeq Raza Khan’s supporters reached Islamia Ground where the cleric had asked his supporters to gather. The cleric’s followers distributed pamphlets and shared posts on social media that read, “The Babri mosque was snatched from us using the court’s decision and now they have started offering prayers in Gyanvapi mosque. Our 700-year-old mosque was razed during midnight hours.”

The police personnel took almost two hours to persuade Taufeeq’s supporters to return to their respective homes.

While returning, some of his supporters beat up two youths, identified as Kamal Sharma and Sameer Sagar in front of Maulana Azad Inter College. After the youths were beaten up and their bikes were broken, some of Khan’s supporters resorted to stone pelting in the Shyamganj market area.

Following the incident, the Bareilly police released a statement informing that Khan had gave a ‘jail bharo andolan’ call and asked his supporters to gather after the Friday Namaz. The police said that the program was completed peacefully. However, some notorious elements thrashed three youths in the Shyam Ganj market under Baradari police station limits and two of them suffered minor injuries. The police assured that they are investigating the matter and action will be taken against the accused.

Bareilly senior superintendent of police (SSP) Ghule Sushil Chandra Bhan also confirmed that stray incidents of stone pelting and sloganeering were reported at the Shyam Ganj market under Baradari police station limits of the city. He added notorious elements thrashed three youngsters near Sailani locality in the same area, and two of them suffered minor injuries. He said the situation had been brought under control even as flag march was taken out in sensitive areas to instill a sense of security among the locals.

He added some anti-social elements were trying to disturb the peace and communal harmony in Bareilly. “We are also keeping watch on social media and people are suggested to refrain from posting anything objectionable on the issue,” he noted.

It may be noted that on Thursday, responding to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s statement in the Assembly on Ayodhya, Kashi and Mathura, the Ittehad-e-Millat Council chief had instigated his supporters to take to the streets.

This was, however, not the first time that Khan had tried to instigate Muslims over the Gyanvapi issue. He has, in fact, been making such provocative statements for quite some time now.

Notably, in December last year, he declared his intention to launch a fight on the streets over the disputed structure at Gyanvapi. On the Mathura and Kashi issue, he said that Muslims are not ready to lose any mosque now, no matter how many surveys someone conducts. He also described the Supreme Court’s decision on Ram Mandir as dishonest.

Tauqeer Raza is known for his incendiary remarks

Earlier in the day OpIndia reported how Taufeeq Khan, while speaking after the Haldawni violence, where a frenzied Muslim mob attacked police personnel and civil authorities who went to demolish a madarsa built on illegally encroached govt land near the Banbhulpura police station, threatened the administration with violence.

Irked by the bulldozer action on the illegally constructed structure in Haldwani, which some labelled as a madarsa while others called it a namaz place, he threatened both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami with violence. Tauqeer declared that the Muslim community won’t tolerate any further bulldozer action. He continued by saying that they would kill anyone who attempted to harm them since it was their constitutional right to do so.

Similarly, on 3rd February, Maulana Tauqeer Raza Khan threatened a civil war in the country. He made the remark after the central government announced that it would award Bharat Ratna to veteran politician Lal Krishna Advani.
