Washington Post glorifies ISIS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in its obituary, changes headline after public backlash

Washington Post in its obituary to ISIS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who killed himself after he detonated his suicide vest during a raid by US forces, tried to glorify the dreaded terrorist. The headline of the Washington Post obituary referred to Baghdadi as an ‘austere religious scholar at helm of Islamic State’ as if Baghdadi being an ‘austere religious scholar’ was his primary identity.

Washington Post headline of ISIS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi’s obituary

Amusingly, their original headline appeared to describe al-Baghdadi as ‘terrorist-in-chief’.

For some reason, Washington Post then decided to whitewash al-Baghdadi and refer to him as ‘austere religious scholar’.

However, following public backlash, Washington Post changed its headline.

Changed headline of Washington Post on Baghdadi’s obituary

Washington Post went from describing ISIS chief as ‘austere religious scholar at helm of Islamic State’ to ‘extremist leader of Islamic State’. Washington Post’s VP Communications, Kristine Coratti Kelly, took to Twitter to explain that the Washington Post headline for al-Baghdadi obituary ‘should have never read that way’.

She said that the headline was changed ‘quickly’. However, netizens were quick to point out how Washington Post would have otherwise whitewashed other criminals who are responsible for the death of thousands, if not millions.

However, the obituary itself is a little problematic as it normalises and humanises the the dreaded terrorist by describing him as a shy young boy who liked soccer.

Soon, twitterati started using the hashtag #WaPoDeathNotices to mock Washington Post for glorifying ISIS chief.

Voldemort was the main antagonist in the popular book and movie series Harry Potter written by JK Rowling.

Saddam Hussein was the Iraqi dictator who carried out severe atrocities. Speaking of atrocities, how can Adolf Hitler, the German dictator responsible for the Holocaust, be left behind?

Meanwhile, Washington Post is not the only publication that has emerged as one of the biggest ISIS sympathisers. Bloomberg, too, glorified al-Baghdadi by describing him as he was someone who came from a small village and then achieved great success against all odds.

On Sunday, 27th October, US President Donald Trump tweeted that ‘something very big has just happened’. The speculations were put to rest when later reports emerged that ISIS head Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had killed himself by detonating a suicide vest during a raid by the US.

Baghdadi held strategic meetings in moving minibus packed with vegetables to avoid detection. Read how ISIS head was killed in a raid by the US

On Sunday, 27th October, US President Donald Trump tweeted that ‘something very big has just happened’.

The speculations were put to rest when later reports emerged that ISIS head Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had killed himself by detonating a suicide vest during a raid by the US. Reuters reports that around February 2018 one of Baghdadi’s top aides gave information to US intelligence agencies on how one of the most dreaded terrorists evaded arrests all these years. Turns out, to avoid detection, Baghdadi would hold strategic meetings in moving minibus packed with vegetables. Ismael al-Ethawi, a close aide of Baghdadi who fled Syria with his wife in 2017, gave information to Turkish authorities.

US President Donald Trump addressing the nation from the White House said that Baghdadi died ‘whimpering and crying’ along with his three children he had taken along inside the tunnel where he detonated his suicide vest.

Ismael al-Ethawi

Reuters reports that militants like Ethawi turning informants was crucial for the agencies to track Baghdadi. Ethawi holds a PhD in Islamic studies and had joined Al Qaeda in 2006. He was arrested by the US forces in 2008 and spent four years in prison. Upon his release, he joined the ISIS where he carried out instructions of Baghdadi of delivering religious instructions. When the ISIS hold weakened, he fled Syria with his Syrian wife in 2017.

Earlier this year, in a joint intelligence operation by the US, Turkish and Iraqi intelligence agencies, several ISIS leaders were captured. This included four Iraqi and one Syrian leader. These leaders gave location details on where they would meet Baghdadi. The Iraqi officials, along with CIA deployed more sources in the area. Eventually, by mid-2019, the agencies zeroed in on Idlib as the possible location of Baghdadi.

Baghdadi was moving around in Idlib from village to village with his family and close aides. There Ethawi was spotted in a market and was identified by his photograph. The intelligence officers followed him and were able to trace where Baghdadi was living. The information was then passed on to the CIA who used satellite and drones to keep an eye on Baghdadi for past five months.

Two days back, Baghdadi left his home with his family in a minibus to go to a nearby village.

The other enemies

Meanwhile, Baghdadi also had local enemies to deal with. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a terrorist group which dominated Idlib and was searching for Baghdadi as well. The two groups had a bloody history of fighting battles against each other during the Syrian war. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham recently captured Abu Suleiman al-Khalidi, one of the three men sitting with Baghdadi in one of the latest propaganda videos.

It is believed that Hayat Tahrir al-Sham passed on the information provided by al-Khalidi to Turkish intelligence agencies which may have helped in locating Baghdadi. Baghdadi was in Idlib since last six months, perhaps trying to blend in and try and hide.

On Saturday night Syria time, the US forces raided the house where Baghdadi was living. The US military personnel and dogs were air-lifted from an unidentified military base in Middle-East reportedly somewhere in Western Iraq. On reaching Baghdadi’s compound, the helicopters were shot at but they managed to land safely. They blasted through the wall and entered the compound.

Those in the compound either surrendered or were killed by the US forces. Several Islamic State fighters were imprisoned and several children were removed and taken elsewhere. Baghdadi then fled inside a tunnel along with his three children where military dogs followed him. When he reached a dead end, he detonated his suicide vest, killing himself and his three children. The US forces carried out DNA test on the ground and confirmed his identity despite his body being mutilated by the blasts.

The US forces then cleared the compound and took with them sensitive material related to the ISIS and its future plans. They were in the compound for about two hours before flying away on the same route as they had come.

According to the US, Baghdadi’s body will be disposed of ‘properly’.

Mumbai man says he was stopped from celebrating Diwali in his Muslim dominated society, lodges police complaint

Vishwa Bhanu, a resident of Malad West, Mumbai, who is associated with the movie industry as an actor, wrote on Facebook today about the ordeal he suffered on the occasion of Diwali as a consequence of the intolerance of his Muslim neighbours. He said that her wife was not being allowed to light up their house on Diwali and he was forced to remove the lights by the mob.

A complaint has been registered at the Malwani Police Station which has been accessed by OpIndia.com.

Complaint filed by Vishwa Bhanu

OpIndia.com got in touch with Bhanu. We were told that he was at the Police station to register a complaint in the matter. Bhanu told OpIndia.com that he is a resident of a society in Malad West that falls under the Malvani Police Station. The society is predominantly Muslim with only one Hindu family apart from him, we were told.

The ordeal began when his wife bought new lights for Diwali and wanted to decorate their house for the festival. But when she put it up, Muslims in the locality descended at his place and wanted the lights removed. They claimed that the lights were giving electric shocks and as there were kids in the neighbourhood, it was risky. His wife objected to the claims and said that nothing of the sort was happening.

The mob then proceeded to damage the lights and tore the wires open, and then used the open wires to claim that the lights could give people electric shocks. Women and children were also participating in the harassment. Numerous communal slurs were hurled as well. The mob claimed that Hindus mix urine in everything and one shouldn’t eat food at their place. Ultimately, the couple was forced to remove the lights to prevent matters from escalating.

Complaint filed by Vishwa Bhanu

In the complaint, Vishwa Bhanu writes:

Like every year, my wife Priyanka Sharma has been prevented from lighting candles and making her Rangoli on Diwali. Anti-social elements who live in the society, where Rehan Petiwala, Salim and Mustafa broke the lights. Every year they do this and even mock our God’s and Goddesses. On Bakra Eid, they force us to keep our door open and they slaughter goats in front of our house when they can do this elsewhere also. But I never said anything because it is their festival. Because we are Hindus, we are mocked, pressurised and a situation is being created that we will soon leave the area. For small things, they come to fight with us. I am mostly away for shooting and am concerned about my wife.

A similar incident occurred last year as well. They had made a Rangoli but people in the neighbourhood would ruin it with their legs and bursting crackers on them. Not just Diwali, during Holi as well, they can’t celebrate the festival properly. The same is the case for Dussehra and Shivratri. Bhanu told OpIndia that they always compromise with their neighbours during their festivals such as Eid but the same isn’t reciprocated during Hindu festivals.

The Muslims in the locality celebrate their own festivals with much pomp and show but do not permit them to celebrate their own. DJs are played with loud music, the houses are lit up but when it comes to them celebrating Hindu festivals, people in the locality do not tolerate the festivities.

We were also told that he is being indirectly threatened over the incident. Veiled threats are being issued about physical harm. He also alleged that he is being pressurized to sell his home at a rate below the market price of the plot but he is resisting it as of now. He said the situation feels a lot like Kashmir, it was something he had only heard about but now, he was experiencing it.

There have been other occasions as well when people have misbehaved with him. One such incident involved him parking a bike in the area near his house where his neighbours didn’t like it. He had parked it there due to his injured leg. A crowd soon created a commotion and he said that there was no need for such a commotion and he would have moved the bike if they had asked politely as well. He told us that normally, people do park bikes there and sometimes, even goats and other things.

Bhanu also told us that he was irreligious earlier and did not care much about religious rituals. But his wife is religious and it pains him to see that when his wife tries to celebrate some festival, she has to endure such harassment from people in the neighbourhood. He told us that he is suffering a lot.

Update: OpIndia tried to reach out to Mumbai police but has been unsuccessful in its attempts. After the unsuccessful attempt, we spoke to Vishwa Bhanu again to understand whether the police had investigated the case. Bhanu said that the police had reached the spot but tried to downplay the incident and calm the situation down. Bhanu was still at the police station and claimed that even at the police station, he was being threatened by the same neighbours that he will be taught a lesson in the future. Bhanu also claimed that even after he had filed the initial report, he was given veiled threats.

At the police station, Bhanu, the Muslim neighbours who he had accused and the building secretary was present. The building secretary too downplayed the issue and said it was an argument because the neighbours thought that the children would get an electric shock from the Diwali lights. Bhanu later added that the building secretary is a gentle soul who is downplaying the incident to calm tempers down. He also said that was being asked to delete his Facebook post so the issue can be resolved and ended. The conversation ended with Bhanu saying that there is an ‘issue of security’ too so he will probably delete the Facebook post. Bhanu also added that he is staying there out of compulsion.

Punjab: Case registered against newly elected Congress MLA from Phagwara for violation of model code of conduct

A case has been registered against Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, the newly elected MLA from Phagwara, Punjab for allegedly violating the model code of conduct. The complaint against newly-elected Congress MLA comes just two days after winning the elections.

According to the reports, Congress MLA-elect Dhaliwal had allegedly wrapped a scarf with the party symbol around his neck inside polling booth 184 where he cast his vote. The bureaucrat-turned-politician was booked under Section 130 (Prohibition of canvassing in or near polling stations) of the People’s Representation Act, 1951.

A video of the controversy had become viral across social media platforms. Based on the complaint by BJP candidate Rajesh Bagha, the Election Commission had issued a notice to Dhaliwal and asked the returning officer to conduct an inquiry and send the report.

Based on an inquiry report submitted by Ahmed, the police has now registered a case against Dhaliwal. Phagwara SP Manwinder Singh has also confirmed it.

Congress candidate Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal had defeated BJP candidate Bagha by a margin of 26,116 votes in the recently held Phagwara by-poll. The seat fell vacant after MLA Som Parkash had won Lok Sabha election in May from Hoshiarpur.

In the recently concluded by-election to four assembly seats – Dakha, Phagwara, Jalalabad and Mukerian in Punjab, the Congress won three while the BJP won the Dakha seat.

ISIS chief-terrorist Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi killed, detonated a suicide vest during raids: Reports

0

The United States has carried out an operation targeting Islamic State (ISIS) leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. The elusive ISIS chief-terrorist Baghdadi is believed to have been killed during the raid conducted by the US military in northwest Syria on Saturday.

According to the reports, a senior US defence official stated that the Islamic State leader was targetted in Syria’s Idlib province. Another source said that the final confirmation is pending while DNA and biometric testing is conducted.

The Reuters reported that US officials confirmed that the operation took place but did not disclose details. However, the defence officials said it appears that Baghdadi detonated a suicide vest during the raid.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump is expected to make a “major statement” at the White House at 9 AM (EST). Earlier, Trump had tweeted, “Something very big has just happened!”

Abu Bakr Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State terror group, has been in hiding for the last five years. In April, a video was released by the ISIS media wing al-Furqan that showed a man purporting to be Baghdadi. It was the first time Baghdadi has been seen since July 2014, when he spoke at the Great Mosque in Mosul.

In February 2018, several US officials said Baghdadi had been wounded in an airstrike in May 2017 and had to relinquish control of the terror group for up to five months because of his injuries.

Baghdadi became the leader of ISIS in 2010. In 2013, ISI declared its absorption of an al Qaeda-backed militant group in Syria and Baghdadi said that his group will now be known as Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS).

England: Restaurant owner stored ISIS execution videos, kept terror manual on how to become a sleeper agent

In a shocking incident, the police probe had resulted in finding that an owner of a curry house in England had hoarded ISIS execution videos and kept a terrorist handbook on how to be a secret agent living a double life in the West. According to the reports, 41-year-old restauranteur Abdul Hussain was arrested in Torquay, England in July appeared before the court last week in connection with storing ISIS handbooks including ‘How to Survive in the West’ and ‘Miracles in Syria’ on hard drives at his flat.

These books had instructions on making bombs, handling weapons, avoiding detection, and ways of travelling to ISIS-controlled territory to take part in the fighting.

The raid by counter-terrorism officers was carried out at a flat in July and had found videos of ‘extremely savage and disturbing’ public beheadings and conspiracy theories denying the Westminster terror attack. Some of the videos showed executions carried out by children.

They had also uncovered manuals detailing how to ‘activate jihad at the right time’ at his residence during a raid on July 17, 2018.

However, Hussain appearing before the court claimed he was simply a ‘researcher’ with a curiosity about ISIS when he was arrested and interviewed by police. He added that he had wanted to make a documentary, but police found no evidence of this.

The officers had become suspicious of Hussain in early November 2017 when they carried out a drugs raid on his restaurant. However, instead of drugs, they discovered hard drives with the extreme videos on them.

Paul Raudnitz, the prosecutor said, “How to Survive in the West was, in essence, a compendium of information of assistance to a terrorist. It purported to teach how to be a secret agent living a double life and how to become a ‘sleeper-cell’ which ‘activates at the right time’ when needed to jihad.”

“There were a very large number of documents relating to the Syrian conflict, the Iraq war, ISIS, jihad and terrorism. These included a number of pro-ISIS publications, such as ISIS online magazines and e-books. There were also a large number of video files relating to ISIS and terrorism, including a number portraying disturbing scenes of ISIS fighters training; fighting; public, sometimes extremely savage, executions; and violence,” added Raudnitz.

The prosecution claimed that the document provided information to the terrorist on how to hide an extremist identity and gave tips on physical training, self-defence techniques and target practice. Most significantly, it also gave details about weapons, survival techniques, bomb-making and transporting weapons, said the prosecutor.

US Senator writes to India, says pedophile pastor of NGO that wanted to ‘connect with savages’ imprisoned because he is Christian

Republican Senator Charles Ernest Grassley, who represents Iowa, has written to India accusing the authorities of jailing Pastor Faiz Rehman as he is a Christian, Hindustan Times reported. Rehman Faiz of ‘Good News’ NGO was arrested after inmates at the shelter home he ran in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district accused him of mental, physical and sexual abuse.

The US Senator, however, believes he has been imprisoned for his Christian faith. The letter, which has been accessed by Hindustan Times, said, “I have been contacted by several Iowans about the case of Dr Rehman expressing their concern. Since his arrest, Dr Rehman has been denied bail and has had his trial delayed on numerous occasions.”

“I ask that your government look into Dr Faiz Rehman case that it be given every consideration under applicable Indian law and that it be resolved as speedily as possible,” he wrote. The letter was forwarded to the Odisha government by the Ministry of External Affairs sometime this month.

Pratap Kumar Acharya, the chairperson of Child Welfare Committee who lodged the FIR in December last year, said, “The food that they were being given was sub-standard. At least seven of the girl inmates gave me in writing that Rehman was touching their private parts and often kissed them much to their discomfiture.” “The food that they were being given was sub-standard. At least seven of the girl inmates gave me in writing that Rehman was touching their private parts and often kissed them much to their discomfiture,” he added.

The NGO named ‘Good News India’ wanted to bring the ‘Good News of Jesus’ and ‘connect with savages’. The Odisha police had arrested three persons, including the Managing Director of the NGO, Faiz Rahman in connection with the case. It was also being investigated for converting inmates to Christianity in West Bengal.

We had also reported earlier how Good News NGO run by Faiz Rehman seems to be a front for conversion. One look at their website and the conversion rhetoric was evident. In the webpage that spoke about Fayaz Rehman, there was even a portion where they had asserted the Good News does not let the children go after their 10th grade like other NGOs because they run the risk of “returning to Paganism”.

In March, the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) had discovered that the shelter home was up and running again despite the fact that it was sealed last year. An investigation had been initiated into the matter and after a raid, the children present were shifted to a government-owned shelter home.

Reserve Bank of India clarifies that it has not sold any gold or trading in it, refutes the ET report categorically

Various news reports had emerged recently that the Reserve Bank of India has been selling gold from its reserves for the first time in a long while. According to the Economic Times report, the RBI since the beginning of July bought gold worth $5.1 billion and sold about $1.15 billion of the yellow metal. However, tweaking its headline a bit, the ET had reported that RBI has begun to sell some of its gold again despite their own reports suggested that RBI had bought more gold rather than selling from its reserves.

However, on Sunday, the Reserve Bank of India released a statement refuting media reports which had stated that they have been selling or trading in gold lately. The RBI clarified that it has not sold any gold or trading in it.

The central bank further stated, “The fluctuation in value depicted in Weekly Statistical Supplement (WSS) is due to change in frequency of revaluation from monthly to weekly basis and is based on international prices of gold and exchange rates.”

The RBI’s response comes as the ET report had reported that the central bank appears to have started trading in gold more actively since adopting the Bimal Jalan report. The Jalan committee was set up last year in the wake of the debate over sharing the RBI’s surplus income with the government to fund its deficit.

In a hurry to corner the Reserve Bank of India and the Modi government, some sections of the media and leaders of the opposition parties used this misleading report to suggest that an unprecedented economic situation has arisen and the RBI is selling its gold reserves as a countermeasure to it.

The so-called ‘economists’ and ‘journalists’ went on to imply that the condition of the Indian economy is so bad that the Reserve Bank of India is eyeing to sell country’s gold reserves to monetise other resources to fight the slowdown.

Swati Chaturvedi, a troll masquerading as a journalist insinuated that RBI is resorting to selling reserves, which according to her indicated a bad economic situation.

Controversial left-wing lawyer, Prashant Bhushan, who is also notoriously known for peddling fake news often, resorted to spreading his propaganda by claiming that the government after taking away Rs.1.76 lakhs from the RBI reserves, RBI is selling its gold reserves.

Soon, others followed similar propaganda to target the RBI and Modi government. Citing ET’s misleading report, the trolls resorted to relate the ‘imaginary’ situation to the 1991 balance of payment crisis.

Now, with the Reserve Bank of India calling out the ET report, one is yet to see how many journalists issue retractions.

Karnataka High Court reprimands woman for filing false 498A case on husband, asks her to pay Rs.25,000 for harassment

0

The Karnataka High Court has reprimanded a woman and directed her to pay Rs 25,000 as a cost to her ex-husband for abusing the process of law by registering a false case under section 498A IPC to harass her husband.

According to the reports, the Karnataka High Court, while directing the 35-year-old woman, a resident of Mysuru to pay the costs to her husband for filing a false case under 498A also quashed a criminal complaint against husband Faisal Ahmed Khan. Justice PS Dinesh Kumar passed the order while allowing a petition filed by 50-year-old Faisal Ahmed Khan, a mechanical engineer hailing from Hunsur in Mysuru district.

Nazia Asma, a resident of Lashkar Mohalla, Mysuru, had alleged that Khan and his relatives had harassed her and sought dowry. She had alleged that Khan and his family had demanded Rs 3 lakh and additional money to purchase a car while filing a false case under 498A.

Read: Supreme Court scraps no arrest rule under 498A says earlier verdict fell in ‘legislative sphere’

The police had initially filed a charge-sheet Khan, but the High Court did not find any material evidence against him. Observing that her statements in the complaint were full of contradictions, the court noted that she had first alleged that Khan tried to kill her by trying to hang her and after some days had said that he tried to kill her by making her fall from a motorcycle.

“The complaint is full of unbelievable and self-contradicting allegations. All allegations in the complaint are omnibus in nature. Neither the prosecution nor the complainant has placed any other material which may suggest the commission of any of the alleged criminal act/s by the petitioner. Therefore, it can be safely concluded that allegations against the petitioner are designed to harass him,” the court said.

Details of the false case under 498A:

Khan, who is a Mechanical Engineer was working in Kuwait. He had married Nazia on July 21, 2008, in Mysore. A female child was born to them. The woman did not agree to join her husband to go abroad. In order to save the marriage, the husband himself resigned from his job.

Later in 2011, Nazia left home for her sister’s engagement ceremony but never returned. Subsequently, Faisal Khan got another job in Bahrain and left the country alone in 2012. In April 2012, Nazia later filed a complaint against Khan and his family members at the Women’s Police Station at Mysuru, alleging harassment and demand for dowry.

The Mysuru police had filed charge-sheet only against Faisal for offences punishable under Sections 498-A, 506 of IPC and Sections 3 and 4 of Dowry Prohibition Act.

Interestingly it was revealed that Nazia had withheld details of her earlier marriage with a man called Asif Farooqi. She was a respondent in a matrimonial case for restitution of conjugal rights initiated by her first husband. As Faisal realised that Nazia was already married once, he questioned her about the suppression of the fact. Nazia then filed a false complaint against him. Thereafter, she got married for the third time and also had a child.

Rejecting all the allegations levelled by the woman against Khan of harassment the court said that it can be safely concluded that allegations against the petitioner are designed to harass him.

The court also observed that complaint is silent on how the wife escaped when Khan tried to hang her and why she sat behind him on the motorcycle even assuming that he had tried to hang her while pointing out several other “unbelievable and self-contradicting allegations”.

The legacy of Tipu Sultan: Here is why Mandyam Iyengars of Karnataka observe Diwali as a day of mourning

The “festival of lights” brings with it good vibes, good food and a sense of well-being. Diwali/Deepavali stands for the victory of good over evil and reminds us of how light dispels darkness. But for one community in Karnataka, Deepavali is a dark and unwelcome reminder of their tryst with a tyrant, Tipu Sultan. The Mandyam Iyengar community (a Brahmin sub sect) observe “Naraka Chaturdasi” as a day of mourning. It was on this day more than 2 centuries ago when the “Tiger of Mysore”, massacred close to 800 Mandyam Iyengar men, women and children in cold blood in the town of Melkote. Although the exact year of the massacre is not known, members of the community state that it occurred between 1783-1795.

Melkote is a small hill town located in Mandya district, Karnataka. Also known as Thirunarayanapuram, it is home to 2 famous temples – the Cheluvanarayana Temple and the Yoga Narasimha Temple. The Mandyam Iyengars are a sub-sect of the Iyengar community. Amongst the earliest followers of Sri Ramanujacharya, they settled in Melkote in the 12th century after being granted patronage by the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana. Sri Ramanujacharya is said to have worshipped at the Cheluvanarayana Temple and subsequently renovated it. The Hoysalas eventually declined but the fortunes of the Mandyam Iyengar community saw an upward curve under the Vijayanagar Empire. The Vijayanagar kings were great patrons of the Cheluvanarayana Temple and made several generous grants both to the temple and the Iyengars of Melkote.

By 1565, the Vijayanagar Empire had almost disintegrated. The Wodeyars, who ruled over Mysore, were the vassals of the Vijayanagar Empire and declared independence. Under Raja Wodeyar I, the Mysore kingdom gradually expanded its influence. Over the next 150 years, the community prospered under the Wodeyars and occupied key administrative and religious posts. The Cheluvanarayana temple was also handed over to the Mandyam Iyengars.

However, by 1760, the Wodeyar family had ceded much of their influence and power to the Dalwai or the commanders-in-chief. While the throne was occupied by a Wodeyar, his presence was merely nominal. When Krishnaraja Wodeyar II passed away in 1763, the most influential amongst his commanders-in-chief Hyder Ali established himself as the undisputed ruler of the Mysore kingdom. This shift in power also thrust the Mandyam Iyengars into greater prominence. The community owed much of its prosperity and influence to the largesse of the Wodeyars.

Read: Tipu Jayanti: Just another day in “secular” India

This was repaid by a show of fierce loyalty. The dowager queen Lakshmammani’s efforts to place a Wodeyar back on the throne were ably assisted by the Mandyam Iyengars. At the forefront was the Pradhan of Mysore, Thirumalai Iyengar and his brother Narayan Iyengar. Talks were initiated to forge an alliance with the East India Company in order to dethrone Hyder Ali. The plot was uncovered by Hyder Ali and he imprisoned both the brothers and their extended family. Fearing persecution, several members of the community emigrated to the Madras Presidency. Interestingly, Hyder Ali retained other Mandyam Iyengars who were in important administrative posts.

When Hyder Ali died in 1783, he was succeeded by his son Tipu Sultan. Unlike his father, Tipu was quite wary of the relationship between the Iyengars and the Dowager Queen. After Hyder Ali’s death, Rani Lakshmammani intensified her efforts to sign a military alliance with the British. Shamaiah Iyengar, a minister in Tipu’s court secretly reached out to Lord George Harris, a high ranking Major General in the Madras Army. This correspondence was viewed as treason by Tipu Sultan and his response was to wipe out the entire Mandyam Iyengar community in Melkote.

On “Naraka Chaturdasi”, the day when Deepavali is celebrated by several south Indian communities, the army of Tipu Sultan rounded up the Mandyam Iyengar community living in Melkote. More than 800 people were slaughtered and Melkote was laid waste. The rest of the inhabitants abandoned the town. Melkote turned into a ghost town overnight. It is also instructive to note that Lord George Harris was subsequently appointed Commander of the Madras Army which participated in the 4th Anglo Mysore War with 2 other British armies and defeated Tipu Sultan.

To this day, the Mandyam Iyengar community does not celebrate Naraka Chaturdasi and observe it as a day of mourning, due to the actions of Tipu Sultan. The memories of the massacre have been seared into the collective consciousness of the community. In 2014, a paper about the massacre was presented by two research scholars belonging to the community – Dr.M.A.Jayashree and Prof.M.A.Narasimhan. Unfortunately, no other accounts of the massacre exist outside the Mandyam Iyengar community. The event has also been ignored by mainstream historians in India.

The question of whether Tipu Sultan was a religious bigot or not deserves a debate of its own. Any attempt to highlight massacres such as these will likely lead to accusations of “revisionism”. This is also in line with the current mood prevalent in certain academic circles. It is important that the trauma inflicted upon a small community is at least acknowledged. Deepavali is supposed to symbolize the victory of light over darkness but for the Mandyam Iyengars, it will forever remain a day when darkness descended upon them.
