After Pakistan quotes Rahul Gandhi at UN to peddle its agenda, Rahul does a U-turn on Kashmir issue

Rahul Gandhi has done a Kejriwal. After months of mirroring Pakistan’s lines and casting doubts on the government over issues of national security, Rahul Gandhi has suddenly started singing a different tune.

Rahul has tweeted today saying that though he disagrees with the government over many issues, he wants to make it clear that ‘Kashmir is an integral part of India’. He also asserted that there is no room for Pakistan or any other country to interfere in it. Rahul’s statement was significantly different from what his party’s Lok Sabha chief had stated in the parliament.

Rahul then stated that there is violence in Jammu and Kashmir and it is because Pakistan instigates and supports it. He added that Pakistan is the prime supporter of terrorism in the world.

As soon as Rahul had shared the tweet, Shashi Tharoor jumped in with his support. Calling Rahul Gandhi as ‘chief’, Tharoor stated that Congress has been insisting on it all along.

Tharoor, however, made it clear why Rahul Gandhi suddenly sounds patriotic and is vocally opposing Pakistan. Tharoor added in his tweet, “we opposed the manner in which Article 370 was abrogated because of the way it was done assaulted our Constitution& democratic values. No reason for Pak to draw any comfort from our stand”.

Actually, Pakistan has been ‘drawing a lot of comforts’ from the stand taken by Rahul Gandhi and his political cronies. Even during the Pulwama attacks and India’s retaliatory Balakot airstrikes after that, Pakistan has used Congress and other opposition leaders’ statements to peddle its nefarious agenda.

After Indidecisionison to strip Article 370 and bifurcate the state of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate UTs, Pakistan had repeatedly used the statements of Congress leaders to further its argument.

Pakistani analysts and strategists in their media debates had even named the Congress as a ‘sympathiser’ of Pakistan. Recently, Imran Khan had even copied Rahul Gandhi’s favourite lines against RSS and the BJP and had stated that the RSS and PM Modi are planning a Nazi-like imposition of Hindutva ideology in India.

It is notable here that barely 3 weeks ago, the Congress Working Committee had passed a resolution against the central government’s decision to strip article 370 and bifurcate the state. The CWC, chaired by Rahul Gandhi, had called the government’s decision unconstitutional and undemocratic.

In recent days it has even become difficult to distinguish whether it was a Congress statement or a Pakistani statement if the source was not clearly mentioned. To take the similarity with Congress to another level, a Pakistani minister had also questioned the Modi government over Rafale jets.

Yesterday, Pakistan had again written to the United Nations against India and had used statements by Rahul Gandhi and other leftist leaders to further its narrative. Tharoor’s assertion that there is no reason for Pakistan to ‘draw comfort’ from Congress’ stand sounds like clarification in that context.

Many Congress leaders had defied the party stand and had supported the government over its decision on Jammu and Kashmir. Congress has been on a downward spiral and after the open defiance of many senior leaders on the issue of article 370 abrogation, the party’s leadership woes and internal disputes were out in the open for everyone to see.

The exact reasons behind Rahul’s sudden tune change are not clear yet. They might never be, but a desperate wish to save his own party from losing all respect in the eyes of the Indian voter may have been a significant motivator behind it.

Pakistan writes to the UN again, takes Rahul Gandhi quotes, Kavita Krishnan’s ‘fact-finding mission’ as base for anti-India propaganda

Pakistan’s Minister of Human Rights has written to the United Nations accusing India of carrying out human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir.

Shireen Mazari is the same person who wrote to the UNICEF and whined to remove Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra as goodwill ambassador in wake of her ‘Jai Hind’ tweet after the Balakot Air Strikes. UNICEF, obviously, told Pakistan Priyanka Chopra is free to have her views and opinions.

Now, again in her letter to the UN, Mazari has quoted former Congress President Rahul Gandhi to back up her claims of human rights violation.

Pakistan Minister for Human Rights writes to the UN

She mentions that former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has also ‘noted’ that “people dying” in Jammu & Kashmir, in light of events “going very wrong here”. On 25th August, a day after Rahul Gandhi led a delegation of opposition leaders he had posted a video on Twitter where he is arguing with the security personnel at the Srinagar Airport for not being allowed as there are still certain restrictions in place to avoid any eventuality.

He had said that it had been 20 days since people of Jammu & Kashmir “had their freedom and civil liberties curtailed”. He could be heard speaking to the security forces that he would like to go to ‘any area which is peaceful’ and had concluded his video by saying that “it is very clear that things are not normal in Jammu & Kashmir.”

Shireen Mazari also cites the CPIML’s Kavita Krishnan and her gang of hyper activists including Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s former close aide Jean Dreze who had claimed they visited Kashmir between August 9 to 13 and referred to on-ground situation as ‘occupied Iran or occupied Palestine’. In a major embarrassment to the anti-India forces within the country, the Press Club of India had refused to allow screening of the video footage they claimed to have made in Kashmir. The Press Club of India had not allowed screening on grounds that there was no way to verify the authenticity of the footage and banned their propaganda. Now, that unverifiable claims propagated by Kavita Krishnan and other hyper activists is being used by Pakistan to further their anti-India agenda.

Pakistan cites Kavita Krishnan’s unverifiable ‘ground-report’ which she claims to be from Kashmir.

This is not the first time Pakistan has used the opposition in India to target India. A video of a debate being held on Pakistani news channel had gone viral on social media few days back where Mushahid Hussain, a Pakistani politician, journalist and geo-strategist, revealed that people like writer Arundhati Roy, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and political parties like the Congress were “sympathisers” of Pakistan, who can be helpful for the cause of Pakistan.

Pakistan had also blamed Rahul Gandhi for losing the elections and allowing PM Modi to assume power which led to abrogation of Article 370. Later, taking cue from Congress, Pakistan even raked up the Rafale bogey which was peddled by Congress ahead of 2019 general elections.

Shah Faesal detained under court order, he was travelling to USA on tourist visa, didn’t have student visa: J&K govt tells court

0

The Jammu and Kashmir government has refuted the claim of IAS officer turned politician Shah Faesal that he was going to Harvard for studies, saying he didn’t have any student visa when he was travelling to USA. In an affidavit filed at the Delhi High Court in response to habeas corpus petition filed by Shah Faesal seeking his immediate release, the J&K government also said that he is not under unauthorised custody as claimed by him.

They said that Faesal was lawfully detained on August 14 after his arrival in Srinagar, according to an order passed by an Executive Magistrate. Since Shah Faesal was detained after a valid court order, which has not been challenged by anyone, the habeas corpus petition is not maintainable, the J&K Government has argued.

The govt has said that in order to prevent Shah Feasal from leaving the country after the abrogation of Article 370, a Look Out Circular (LOC) was issued against him by the Intelligence Bureau (IB) on August 12, at the request of CID Wing of J&K Police. Shah Faesal was “offloaded” by immigration officials at Delhi Airport as per this LOC. He was moved to Srinagar after that.

The J&K government says that after arriving at Srinagar, Faesal started addressing a group of people at the airport, instigating them “against the sovereignty and integrity of India” which had a potential of a breach of peace. He was asked to stop doing so by the In-charge Police Post, but he continued to create an unruly atmosphere at the Srinagar Airport. Therefore, he was “apprehended on the spot” on the verbal orders passed by the Budgam Executive Magistrate 1st Class under Sections 107 read with Section 151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, the government stated.

The J&K government has said that considering that the Petitioner is the President of a political party called the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Movement, the police had realised that his actions have the potential to cause a breach of peace which can resultantly disrupt the peace and tranquillity of the region.

The magistrate had explained to Shah Faesal that as per laws, he was required to furnish a bond/security of Rs 50,000 for “keeping the peace”. But as he refused to pay the bond, the magistrate had issued an order to keep him in custody till the next day of hearing, which was 24th August.

The government also rejected the claim made by Faesal saying that he was going to Harvard University for studies, saying it is a “false façade”, as he didn’t have any student visa. They have stated that, “It is not conceivable, in absence of any cogent material, to accept the theory that a leader of a political outfit which is very vocal about the constitutional actions taken by the Constitutional bodies of our country on 5th August 2019, would leave the country at this juncture to pursue some academic course at Harvard University, that too without a student visa.”

The J&K Government has emphasised on the fact that apart from showing his tickets from Delhi to Turkey to Frankfurt to Boston, Shah Faesal had “failed to show” any other proof to substantiate his claim of going to the University for studies. They said that Shah Faesal was carrying a tourist visa for the United States, which does not permit joining an academic course there.

The Jammu and Kashmir also disputed the jurisdiction of the Delhi High Court to entertain the habeas corpus petition of Faesal. Claiming that Shah Faesal was detained in Srinagar under an order passed in Srinagar, and he is currently also in Srinagar, the J&K Government has argued that the case falls within the territorial jurisdiction of the Jammu & Kashmir High Court.

The Delhi High Court will hear the matter on September 3.

Pakistani Twitter handle issues ‘beheading’ threat to India Today journalist Nida Ahmad for supporting abrogation of Article 370

India Today group’s female associate producer and journalist, Nida Khan, has received death threats from a Pakistani Twitter handle. The Pakistani Twitter user had taken to Twitter to threaten Nida Ahmad of ‘beheading’ her after she extended her support to India’s decision to abrogate Article 370.

SS of the threat received by Nida Ahmad on Twitter

The Pakistani Twitter user abused the TV anchor and threated to behead her as he wrote that he was somewhere in India and would make sure he beheads her soon.

She has earlier too, received several death threats. However, after this message, Nida finally approached the Noida police and filed a case in the Sector-20 police station. SHO Rajbir Singh Chauhan taking cognisance of the complaint said that the cyber cell is investigating the case.

Nida Ahmad had anchored a video on Tez channel, a 24-hour Hindi news television channel owned by the TV Today Network, and a sister channel of Aaj Tak, on the occasion of Independence day. In her video, which became the number 1 trending video on Youtube, Ahmad spoke of how Independence Day was celebrated in Jammu and Kashmir after abrogation of Article 370 in the valley.

Before this, Nida Ahmed made it to the headlines for her befitting reply to a rattled Pakistani News anchor, after she appeared to threaten Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Kashmir issue. Mocking Pakistan and Pak anchor Kiran Naaz, dauntless Nida Khan said: “Hum Kashmir mein curfew bhi hatayenge aur Tiranga bhi firanyenge” (We will remove the curfew from Kashmir as well as hoist the tricolour there).

Mocking Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, Nida had said that India need not get lessons from a country whose entire economy is dependent on Donkey trade.

Nida Ahmad, who is known for her gutsy attitude, unequivocal anchoring and her fury for terror state Pakistan, had earlier also got similar threats after she criticised terror state Pakistan for the Pulwama attack which claimed the lives of over 40 Indian soldiers.

Pakistan has been completely blown off after India decided to repeal Article 370 which granted a separate status to Jammu and Kashmir state and a subsequent bill aimed to bifurcate the state into two Union Territories. Apart from whining and sulking, Pakistani stooges have infested various social media sites like Twitter with fake and malicious news in an attempt to create an atmosphere of panic in India.

Compelled by this tendency, Arif Alvi, the President of the parody country Pakistan, had also taken to the micro-blogging site for spreading disinformation regarding the Kashmir situation for which Twitter served him a notice yesterday.

Pakistani federal minister says PM Imran Khan is considering complete closure of Pakistani airspace to India and land routes to Afghanistan

0

India’s bold move to repeal Article 370 which granted a separate status to Jammu and Kashmir state and a subsequent bill aimed to bifurcate the state into two Union Territories fell like a bombshell on Pakistan. The already strained relationship between India and Pakistan has become worse since then.

Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Fawad Hussain Chaudhry today took to Twitter to announce that Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan is considering a complete closure of Air Space to India and a complete ban on the use of Pakistan land routes for Indian trade with Afghanistan. He claims that these suggestions were brought up in a cabinet meeting headed by the PM today and the legal formalities for these decisions are under consideration.

Earlier, Pakistan trying to increase tensions over full integration of Jammu and Kashmir in India, had partially shut down its airspace for all airlines. The Pakistan airspace remained closed for several months after the Balakot strikes by India, and it was reopened only last month.

According to a NOTAM (notice to airman) issued by Pakistan on 6th August, a day after the historic decision of repealing Article 370, three segments of air routes between India and Pakistan will remain closed till September 5.

After the Balakot airstrikes where India had gone deep into Pakistan territory and flattened terror camps in Balakot with airstrikes, Pakistan had shut its airspace completely for weeks. Pakistan had in June asserted that it will open its Eastern airspace for flights to and from New Delhi only if India promises not to repeat a Balakot like operation inside Pakistan’s territory. Interestingly, while Pakistan wants India to promise that a Balakot like operation won’t be repeated, when the operation, codenamed ‘Operation Bandar’ had happened, Pakistan had lied that India had managed to hit just a few trees. It was only in July that Pakistan had re-opened its airspace for civilian flights again.

Imran Khan, who has been lately keeping busy running pillar to post trying to get India isolated globally and issuing hopeless nuclear war threats to India, has probably taken a cue from his so-called Pakistani Twitter ‘wizards’ who recently gave him a piece of strategic advice, asking him to teach Modi a lesson by ‘shutting down Indian Airspace’. However, it seems as shutting down ‘Indian Airspace’ will be beyond their capabilities, they will resort to shutting down their own airspace for Indian airlines.

If China breached the “grey zone” at the border 100 times, we did it 200 times: Indian Army Vice Chief designate Lt Gen M M Naravane

0

Indian Army’s Vice Chief designate Lt Gen M M Naravane today said that China transgressed the “grey zone” at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) 100 times, while the Indian Army did so 200 times, twice the number. Currently the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command, Naravane said that China acted as a regional bully during the Doklam standoff.

Addressing an integration on the topic ‘Defending our Borders’ at the Bharat Chamber of Commerce in Kolkata, he said that China must realise that current Indian Army is not same as what it was during the Indo-China war in 1962. He said that India Army’s strong position during the Doklam standoff indicated that Indian Armed forces are no pushovers.

When asked about the lessons learnt from the 1962 war, Naravane said, “We are no longer the Army of 1962. If China says don’t forget history, we also have to tell them the same thing.” He said that India has come a long way since 1962, and China was caught unprepared during the Doklam crisis in 2017.

“They thought that they would get away by being a regional bully, but we stood up to the bully,” he said asserting that India is capable of combating China.

Lt Gen M M Naravane informed that there has been some development at Doklam after the standoff, where both India and China have made two barracks each, both sides have maintained their respective roads.

Talking about transgressions at the LAC, he said that if China entered the grey zone 100 times, India went to the grey zone 200 times. So, it not one-way aggression by one side. He added, “I am sure in their war room they are also complaining that we have done this so many times.”

But he clarified that although grey zone has been violated a number of times, as long as the red line not breached both sides have agreed not to escalate the matter.

The officer also said that the defeat in 1962 was a political defeat, not military. He said that Indian military fought well during the war. He added, “we have learnt our lessons on what went wrong. And over the years we have been trying to bridge that capability gap”.

When he was asked about an article published in a Chinese newspaper that China would have to fight six wars by 2050, including one against India over Arunachal Pradesh, Naravane said, “It is quite a tall task they have set for themselves”. But he also added that as 2049 will be the 100th year of the Communist of Party of China, Beijing would “definitely want to achieve something”.

The officer said that China may try to achieve the goals mentioned in the article not by war, but by indirect ways. He said that they may instigate people in the areas they want to capture to demand to merge with China.

In June 2013, the pro-government Chinese-language newspaper, Wenweipo, had published an article titled “Six Wars China Is Sure to Fight In the Next 50 Years”. The six wars have a common purpose, to reclaim territories what China believes to be their, which was lost by the country after their defeat to the British in the Opium war. The six years anticipated by the article were, Unification of Taiwan in 2020-25, “reconquest” of Spratly Islands in 2025-30, “reconquest” of Arunachal Pradesh, which they call Southern Tibet, in 2035-40, “reconquest” of Diaoyu Island and Ryukyu Islands in 2040-45, unification of Outer Mongolia in 2045-50, and finally taking back areas lost to Russia in 2055-60.

Talking about conquering Arunachal, the article had said that although India will still lag behind China, it is still one of the world powers, and if China uses force to conquer Arunachal, it will face some losses. Therefore, the writer had suggested to incite the disintegration of India and dividing it into several countries. It said that although today disintegration may not be possible, China should try to incite Assam. It had also suggested that China should export advanced weapons to Pakistan, so that they can conquer Southern Kashmir. It said that while India and Pakistan will be busy in war, China will able to take Arunachal. The article had claimed that India won’t be able to fight two wars simultaneously.

The Global Ummah speaketh on Kashmir: US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, her sketchy past, and her Islamist views

Controversial US Congresswoman, Ilhan Omar, has spoken out on Kashmir this time. In a tweet, she said, “We should be calling for an immediate restoration of communication; respect for human rights, democratic norms, and religious freedom; and de-escalation in Kashmir.”

Omar, who is accused of marrying her brother in immigration fraud, is a known antisemite. Considering her rather toxic ideology, it isn’t a surprise that she has taken a pro-Jihad stand on Kashmir.

With Omar’s tweet, the global nature of the Ummah has also come to the fore. While the Arabs have noticeably refrained from interfering with the matter in any manner, Pakistanis and Muslims from other regions of the world have been vocal about the issue. In India, too, a radical section of the community has been indulging in extremely problematic rhetoric.

While Omar’s tweet was measured, it has no doubt more to do with the fact that she has been in troubled waters recently in her country. She has been criticized by POTUS Donald trump himself and Republicans and Democrats alike have criticized her for her troubling conduct.

It is, perhaps, natural for the US Congresswoman to be unaware of the nitty-gritty of international politics. However, invariably, she aligns herself with radical Islamic ideology. If the Indian State had not enforced restrictions in Jammu & Kashmir, violence and bloodshed would have followed the monumental decision on August 5th. These restrictions were borne of necessity, not whims. By taking the stand she has, Omar is playing straight into the hands of Jihadists.

It only goes on to show that the Ummah, which has no doubt weakened with the Arabs refusing to side with Pakistan without taking other factors into consideration, is very much alive. There is indeed a transnational aspect to political Islam which makes radical Muslims prioritize other Muslims over their nation.

For instance, the Ummah was evident in the manner in which Kashmiri Muslims had no problem with Rohingyas residing in the Valley but wouldn’t permit Indians from other regions of the country to live there peacefully. The Azad Maidan riots in Mumbai in 2012 occurred in response to the treatment of Rohingyas in Assam. More recently, 5 Muslims thrashed an RSS karyakarta for celebrating the abrogation of Article 370.

There are many other ways in which the Global Ummah manifests itself. UK MP Liam Byrne was vocal in his criticism of the decision to abrogate Article 370. As it turned out, he was elected from a constituency that had a Muslim population of over 40%, a signification section of which is of Pakistani descent. In London, Pakistani and Khalistani goons attacked Indians celebrating Independence Day outside the Indian High Commission.

The Global Ummah also manifests itself in the BDS movement, which is directed against Israel for what its proponents call an ‘occupation’ of Palestine. The Israel-Palestine conflict is also the reason why significant sections of the Indian Muslim community oppose a friendly relation with Israel. This reflects on the choices made by Indian political parties which has consequently shaped India’s foreign policy. Unsurprisingly, Ilhan Omar and her comrade Rashida Tlaib, who has as much a chequered past like hers, are vocal proponents of the BDS movement.

One of the greatest achievements of Narendra Modi’s foreign policy as Prime Minister has been shrewdly navigating through the Global Ummah and isolating Pakistan globally. Despite the significant difficulty, India has succeeded in isolating Pakistan from even the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). However, the Global Ummah continues to manifest itself in other areas.

No, Rahul Gandhi, the govt is not ‘stealing RBI money’: Here are the facts

0

After the Reserve Bank of India decided to transfer a surplus amount of ₹1,76,051 crore to the Government of India, former Congress president and Gandhi family scion Rahul Gandhi took the opportunity to rebuke the central government saying that the transfer of funds from RBI to the government was akin to stealing from the RBI.

Rahul proceeded to assert that the transfer of the surplus amount by RBI to the government is equivalent to a robbery. But the fact is, Rahul Gandhi is completely wrong here as the central bank transferring surplus to the government is not an unusual practice. In fact the RBI Act itself has provision for such transfer. The Chapter 4, Section 47 of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, titled “Allocation of Surplus funds” mandates for any profits made by the RBI from its operations to be sent to the centre.

As per the section, the Reserve Bank of India is required by the law to transfer additional excess funds to the centre. Section 47 says that “after making arrangements for bad and uncertain debts, depreciation in assets, contributions to staff and superannuation funds and for all other matters for which provision is to be made by or under this Act or which are usually provided for by bankers, the balance of the profits shall be paid to the central government”.

Moreover, this is not the first time that RBI is transferring surplus to the central government. In 2014 the central bank had transferred Rs 52,679 crore, which was the entire surplus for the previous year. In the previous year, RBI had transferred Rs 33,010 crore to the government, and in 2011-12, Rs 16,010 crore was transferred.

Nevertheless, prone to gaffes, the former INC president likened the authorised action in accordance with the RBI act to purloining. In a bid to taint the BJP government at the centre, Gandhi asserted that the Union government has resorted to stealing from the RBI. However, it was the central bank’s decision to transfer the excess surplus to the government based on the Bimal Jalan Committee recommendations.

The committee recommended that a clearer distinction between the two components of economic capital, realized equity and revaluation balances, should be maintained. They said that realized equity could be used for meeting all risks/ losses as they were primarily built up from retained earnings, while revaluation balances could be reckoned only as risk buffers against market risks.

The ₹1.76 lakh crore to be transferred consists of ₹1,23,414 crore of surplus for the year 2018-19 and ₹52,637 crore of excess provisions, which were identified as per the revised Economic Capital Framework (ECF) adopted at a meeting of the Central Board of the bank.

A turning point for The Lancet: The medical journal is using Healthcare as an instrument of politics

A recent Editorial in the acclaimed Medical Journal Lancet on August 17th, titled “Fear and uncertainty around Kashmir’s future, created a furore. Two events in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir have been connected to each other while being economical on the truth with both. To further reinforce, a democratic Government has taken a major political and administrative decision for settling a historical conflict, has been held guilty of the related Healthcare crisis which will actually now improve.

Further mixing the two events to give a title of “fear and Uncertainty about Future” amounts to the ultimate fear-mongering with the hypocrisy written all over, by making Healthcare an instrument of politics, and naturally has irked Indian Doctors including the diaspora worldwide. Very strangely, the only other report on the same issue was in the BMJ two days later on similar lines, which is also a voice of exception.

Our utmost sympathy to those who are suffering. But to shrewdly distort decisions taken, to solve the larger vexed issue festering since 70yrs while ignoring larger suffering since decades, that the same Kashmiri people were victims of, smacks of contempt to all rational and democratic values. Why would the forces behind these two publications want the problem to continue, rather than support the bold decisions taken to solve them? Why is the elected Government of a vibrant democracy being vilified, while all those who have caused and aggravated the problem being deftly ignored?

Very interestingly, both these publications in British Journals came barely hours after related events in the UN Security Council on August 16th. Pakistan which pursues terrorism as a state policy, and is widely accepted as the fountainhead of terrorism worldwide, pushed for a resolution by the UN Security Council against India, along with their all-weather ally China. All of the other members clearly declined support, the exception being Britain. An administrative decision related purely to the Indian Constitution was carried out by the elected Government and approved by it’s Parliament. All this in a sovereign state where the Military is under complete control of the Elected Government, who in turn can be pulled up by an independent Judiciary.

With utter disregard to History and geopolitical facts, a narrative since decades centred on just three political families from the same Kashmir valley has been peddled by the Lancet editorial as the opinion of the entire state of J&K. Very likely the same was justified by an ingenious study design being sequentially quoted in the references cited by The Lancet. Why was the data from Kashmir Mental Health Survey 2015 analysed as a cross-sectional study, when same data could’ve been analysed as a comparative study with a much higher level of evidence, simply by using a control population to compare the results to? Was this to avoid focus on the unique socio-demographic make-up of the Kashmir valley, with the dominant Sunni Muslim population, just like in the state of Pakistan who openly supports an armed separatist movement against the Indian Government?

J&K receives massive funding amounting to 10% of India’s GDP, despite the state contributing only 1% to the same, though most of this is siphoned off by the powers & opinion makers in the valley, thanks to regressive Laws without any transparency. All of this is conveniently ignored by the Lancet though it admits few Health parameters in J&K are better than the rest of India. Imagine the benefit to healthcare once the same Laws & accountability will be in force in J&K hereon, just like the rest of India. Having lost 4 wars against India, Pakistan pursues a policy of state-sponsored terror and bleeding Indian through a thousand cuts, implemented by the separatists, terrorists and paid stone-throwers. Those who oppose the welfare centric decisions by India, go completely silent on the repeated shutdown in the valley & Kashmir called by these forces repeatedly over the decades. No mention of the brutal massacre, rape of Kashmiri Hindus amounting to genocide, which the same vested interests are responsible for, easily the biggest incident of ethnic cleansing in recent decades.

The vast majority of Indian Muslims oppose this blatant aggression & interference in J&K by the state of Pakistan since 1989, despite the attempts to paint the violence as a religious war for self-determination. This is despite a failed attempt earlier with a similar effort in, the adjacent state of Punjab between 1984-89 by inciting the Khalistani terrorists to wage a war against the Indian Nation. Many reports in Indian Media toe the same distorted narrative, to applaud the Lancet Editorial while condemning the huge uproar by Indian Doctors on the same. Some of these have precisely followed the line that Pakistan wants, and even called the Indian move as “against the only Muslim majority state in the Nation”. Will they ever equate the same demographic profile to all the gory despicable events in the same state over the decades? Do these Media reports support rights without any responsibility?

One would wonder what is the role of India and it’s native Hindu community in the Muslim dominant land of Kashmir. One only needs to refer to this ancient Sanskrit shloka:

It reads as “Salutations to you, O Sharada, O Goddess, O one who resides in Kashmir. I pray to you daily, please give me the charity of knowledge”.

Kashmir was part of Indian Culture not just before Pakistan was born, but even before Islam itself. Considering this bit of History & Culture will not suit the purpose of Lancet.

To give credit to Lancet, it is true they have reported on healthcare issues arising directly out of political situations across the world, but there is a selective pattern to it. Why are there no reports on much bigger Healthcare issues running since decades, as in the Pakistan controlled areas of Kashmir and Baluchistan, Tibet and Hong Kong controlled by China, or closer to home in Northern Ireland controlled by their own British government? What about the healthcare issues arising from religious extremism in their own backyard, whether in Rotherham or the numerous terror attacks across the UK and other Western Countries right since the 9/11 attacks in the USA? Will they conveniently club the terrorists with the protectors, to trivialise the former and vilify the latter, in any of the above-mentioned issues? The opening line in the Editorial mentions “autonomous status revoked” though the word “autonomy” is not mentioned even once in Article 370 that was abrogated. The last line of the Editorial deftly accuses the Indian PM of alienation & subjugation, while his bold decisions have hit those who make a living out of terrorism.

Going by the angst pouring out in their Editorial seems the bold move by the Indian PM has “hit” even the Lancet. No wonder they find the move as “revoking” and “controversial”, while a Billion Indian citizens including majority form J&K, find it a step to improve the state administration and strengthen the National integrity, and are grateful for finally integrating Kashmir into India after 70 years.

A few years back, an earlier Editorial in the Lancet had denounced Israel for the aggression in Gaza and called upon all to denounce the perverse propaganda created. Acknowledging the angry debate that followed the publication.

Richard Horton wrote as a Comment in the same Journal a week later “Last week was a turning point in the sometimes angry debate that followed publication of a letter..” He also added, as reflections: The clearly anti-Semitic worldview expressed in an accompanying video, shared by two of the Co-Authors, is abhorrent and deserves universal condemnation. He concluded with:

  1. Here is our proposal for new guidance to help us in these rare circumstances— ”Editors will, from time to time, be faced with submissions that lie at the difficult intersection of medicine and politics. Health and health care do have political determinants and editors should not shy away from those. But politics, by its very nature, can be disruptive and divisive, with many different points-of-view held. While taking strong editorial positions on issues of relevance to health is sometimes necessary, editors should always pause, reflect, and consult before publishing any manuscript that might unnecessarily polarise, or foster or worsen the political division.”
  2. We will initiate a new partnership to publish a series on Israel’s health and medical research system, its strengths and challenges, and prospects for its future

Interestingly, the Editorial in 2014 on Gaza had 4 names as “Authors”, and the “Comment” was by the Richard Horton. The present Editorial on Kashmir, does not have any name mentioned as “Author”, making one wonder “have they closed the door for a course correction”?

What can Lancet do to justify it’s a claim of being concerned about healthcare issues in conflict zones. Few of them are include:

A visit to Kashmir which the Indian security forces would be most happy to arrange, and see the partnership by the forces and local Kashmiris with support from the rest of India, just like a visit to Israel after the earlier fiasco.

If this sounds difficult, an updated/additional Editorial is also another good idea, to include all that they missed:

  1. How the unrest in J&K is due to state-sponsored terrorism from Pakistan, and their impending inclusion in the blacklist of FAFT
  2. How separatists, and vested politicians in the state of J&K, indulged in long-standing corruption to siphon off funds meant for governance and citizens’ welfare.
  3. How a peaceful minority of Kashmiri Hindus, were usurped from their native land of centuries, in an act of ethnic cleansing and genocide not seen in the recent past, while state administration kept mum
  4. How the move to extend the administration of India & including progressive Laws to the state of J&K will improve governance and healthcare.
  5. How the Indian authorities have extensively planned the aspects related to this process of integration, and possible repercussions, thanks to which the hardship faced in the interests of long term definitive welfare are only a fraction of that during repeated shutdowns in the Kashmir valley, sponsored by separatist, insurgents. Up to a dozen daily deaths were fairly common, over the shutdown imposed, the last being after the death of terrorist Burhan Wani in 2016. In contrast, there is not even a single death reported, as a direct consequence of the clampdown after August 4th, 2019.

Regarding other conflict zones:

  1. Human rights violation in Guatemala and health consequences thereof
  2. Issues in Baluchistan, Gilgit & Baltistan, are invaded by Pakistan since 1947, with the violent suppression of the native, including forced change of Demography.
  3. Violations and healthcare issues in Tibet & Hong Kong under the control of China.
  4. Issues in Northern Ireland since the suspension of the Stormont assembly.

Once these are done, we will truly agree that the Lancet has done it’s the alleged duty of highlighting healthcare issues in troubled areas across the world. However, having evidently failed to follow their own proposal mentioned in 2014, regarding issues at crossroads of Medicine and Politics, any guess then what option the Lancet now has?

Bilawal Bhutto rants how under Imran Khan Pakistan, which once wanted to claim Srinagar, now struggles to ‘keep Muzaffarabad’

Parody country Pakistan is a gift which keeps on giving. These days it serves as a comic relief when the world struggles to tackle crisis like fire in the Amazon forest and global water crisis.

Pakistan lives in a parallel universe. Yesterday, Bilawal Bhutto, often pegged as Pakistan’s answer to our own Rahul Gandhi, addressed media where he took on Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan. The 24-minute video is pure delight.

The video begins with Bhutto thanking the media and his party (Pakistan People’s Party) workers for being present there. He informs everyone how he has just returned from meeting his father, former Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari in prison, where he is lodged in a money laundering case. He informs everyone how Zardari is arrested as a vendetta by Imran Khan government. “They have been adding accusations but there is no trial or conviction,” he adds.

Speaking in a peculiar accent which reminds one of the 1970s Bollywood movies where a token white man who played the role of a smuggler and struggled to speak in Hindi, Bilawal takes on Imran Khan. Speaking really slowly, perhaps to ensure the Pakistanis understand what he is saying, he says, “Khan Sahab has put his political adversaries in jail thinking this will shut them up. They will compromise and let people attack democracy. This is Imran’s mistake.” He even has a smile when he speaks of democracy being attack in Pakistan, like even he knows the joke.

He speaks on how Pakistan People’s Party has been a strong force to make other Pakistani leaders like Ayub Khan, Yayha Khan and Pervez Musharraf ‘run away’. Referring to Imran Khan as a ‘puppet’ Bilawal says how Imran Khan speaks on the ‘atrocities carried out by PM Modi in India’ but Khan himself is a bigger ‘Nazi’ and ‘fascist’. According to Bilawal, Khan is a puppet and a fascist both.

He then accuses Khan of not providing medical facilities to his father Asif Ali Zardari who is currently in prison in a bid to murder him. He also says that if anything happens to his father’s health, then Khan and others who stopped the timely medical assistance would be responsible.

Bilawal then accuses Khan of striking a deal with US President Donald Trump on Kashmir. “No Pakistani will let this man trade Kashmir. We will fight from all fronts on this. He has not fulfilled even a single promise,” he said. He even accused Khan of taking ‘u-turns’. Speaking of u-turns, do read when Pakistanis trended ‘#PakStandsWithKejriwal‘ on Twitter to support him over surgical strikes.

At around 12:50 in to the video, Bilawal is really angry that Khan administration slept while Modi government in India abrogated Article 370 and made Jammu and Kashmir an integral part of India without any riders attached. “Earlier what used to be our policy on Kashmir? Earlier Pakistan’s policy was how will we take Srinagar and make it part of Pakistan. Now, after Khan has come to power, because of his failure, what is Pakistan’s position? How will we now save Muzaffarabad?” Muzaffarabad in Jammu and Kashmir falls into the part of newly created union territory of Jammu and Kashmir which is illegally held by Pakistan (Pakistan occupied Kashmir).

In another satisfying portion of the video, at around 13:47, Bhutto says, “People are drowned in the tsunami of inflation, Kashmir has been snatched away from our hands, who should be blamed?” At 14:13 in the video, an exasperated Bilawal wonders, what exactly did Imran Khan have that he was selected as PM. “And if at all he is made the PM, at least make him work,” he says.

Amidst all this, his accent also changes to that of a stereotypical rich Arab Sheikh from the Bollywood movies of 1980s who is dealing in guns while watching a gypsy dancer thrusting her pelvis. In rest of the video he rants on how Imran Khan is the worst leader Pakistan has ever had. While one cannot argue with that, fact remians that Pakistan’s former President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq executed Bilawal’s maternal grandfather Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and sent his family in exile. Essentially, Pakistan is a joke of a nation that is yet to produce a Prime Minister who can turn the murderous, terrorist nation into one that can be taken seriously as a civilised country.

Bhutto is son of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and Asif Ali Zardari who served as Pakistani President from 2008-2013. His mother, Benazir was assassinated on 27 December, 2007.
