Five ways to survive Sanjay Manjrekar’s commentary

In this era where Indian society has been sharply divided on almost everything, there is one great unifier – Sanjay Manjrekar’s commentary.

Every Indian hates it with a passion but Star Sports executives don’t seem to notice it. The reasons vary, some don’t like his bland commentary which offers no insights, some don’t like his constant negativity that turns people suicidal, some don’t like the fact that he constantly criticizes their favorite player, but the hate remains constant.

Since Star isn’t going to remove him, we came up with some ideas on how to survive a match when Manjrekar is doing commentary.

1. Hindi imposition – Yes Manjrekar can pop up on Star Sports Hindi as well but as long as he is on Star Sports English, Hindi commentary is totally Manjrekar-free. Just keep the batteries in your remote and switch whenever Manjrekar appears on the English commentary. You may even hear some good commentary if Ganguly or Gavaskar are on air at the time.

2. The Ravi Shastri way – Start drinking with the toss and keep drinking throughout the game. You won’t care who is saying what on commentary, whether it is Sanjay Manjrekar or Mayanti Langer. In fact, by the end of the game, you won’t even care who is winning and who is losing.

3. The Manmohan Singh method – The good old mute the TV option. You will miss out on the atmosphere from the ground and on the commentary from others as well but a small price to pay for a Manjrekar free experience.

4. Be a masochist – Derive pleasure from your pain. Revel in the punishment unleashed on your ears by Star Sports. Take inspiration from Congress leaders still asking for more Rahul Gandhi or from BJP leaders still seeking support of Lutyens liberals, there is a masochist in all of us, you just need to bring that person out.

5. Switch to Radio – Yes there are other things on the radio apart from Mann Ki Baat. You can enjoy the commentary from the World Cup on the radio and it is a lot more fun due to the added suspense. When commentators on radio say ,”Oh that’s high in the air”, you don’t know whether it is going to be 6 or a catch in the deep or a caught behind or a caught and bowled or even LBW at times. So far, Radio is a Manjrekar free zone so make the most of it while you can.

Mujhko Rana Ji Maaf Karna: Meet the ‘Champion’ MLA who loves dancing shirtless with guns in hand

BJP MLA Kunwar Pranav Singh ‘Champion’ from Uttarakhand is seen dancing to the tunes of a popular Bollywood song while brandishing guns. The video clip, which is now going viral on social media, shows Singh dancing with his associates and showcasing multiple guns and also one assault rifle.

Pranav Singh ‘Champion’ is a BJP MLA from Uttarakhand’s Khanpur. He has also been a minister earlier. In the video, the MLA is seen dancing to the popular song ‘Mujhko Rana Ji Maaf Karna’ from the movie ‘Karan Arjun’.

It is, however, not the first time that the MLA’s dancing videos are going viral on social media. In 2015, another dancing video of the MLA had gone viral where Pranav Singh was again seen dancing with guns in his hand. The difference is, back then, he used to be a Congress MLA.

Kunwar Pranav Singh ‘Champion’ seems to be a dance enthusiast. He probably loves dancing with his guns and without his shirts.

The MLA is fond of not just dancing himself, but he loves watching dances too. In another video, reportedly from 2016, the then Congress MLA Kunwar Pranav Singh ‘Champion’ is seen enjoying the performance of a woman, reportedly a bar dancer, in his office.

After the video went viral, Singh reportedly said in his defence that it was an old video, shot six months ago. In this video, thankfully, the MLA has his shirt on.

Khanpur MLA Kunwar Pranav Singh Champion had often been in controversy. He had been a cabinet rank minister in the previous Congress governments of ND Tiwari, Vijay Bahuguna and Harish Rawat. In May 2016, he had revolted against the Harish Rawat government and had joined the BJP with 8 supporting MLAs. He was disqualified under anti-defection laws.

Singh was later elected as a BJP MLA from the Khanpur seat in the 2017 assembly elections.

Singh has always been in controversy over his activities.  Last month, Singh was suspended from the BJP for three months as a punishment for his unruly behaviour after he allegedly misbehaved with a journalist. It was reported that Singh was asking for the BJP MP ticket for his wife from the Haridwar Lok Sabha seat.

Singh has been in news also for his verbal spats, comments over political leaders and his theatrics. In April, after indulging in a verbal spat with Jhabreda MLA Deshraj Karnwal a number of times, Singh had reached the Nehru stadium in Roorki and declared that he is there to challenge Karnwal for a wrestling match.

Deshraj Karnwal had stated that Pranav Singh is mentally imbalanced and he should get himself treated in Agra’s mental hospital.

‘Most dedicated fan of cricket in Pakistan’ files petition against Sania Mirza, Shoaib Malik and others for ‘sheesha party’

Pakistani lawyer Abdul Jalil Marwat has filed a petition in the Singh High Court in Pakistan against various Pakistani cricketers. Shoaib Malik, Wahab Riaz, Imam-ul-Haq and captain Sarfaraz Ahmed are named in the petition for smoking sheesha (hookah) on the eve of the match against India in the ongoing Cricket World Cup. The Pakistani team lost to India and many blamed the party on the prior evening on the poor performance.

The petitioner has claimed that the act of smoking sheesha contributed to the team’s poor performance. Indian tennis player Sania Mirza is also named in the petition. She is Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik’s wife and was also present at the sheesha party.

The petitioner who refers to himself as ‘the most dedicated fan of cricket in Pakistan’ stated how Malik scored zero runs, Imam-ul-Haq scored seven and Riaz only took one wicket against the crucial match against India.

NIA attaches Srinagar property of Kashmiri separatist Asiya Andrabi as ‘proceeds of terror crime’

The National Investigative Agency (NIA) has now attached the Srinagar property of Kashmiri separatist Asiya Andrabi as ‘proceeds of terror crime’.

The notice written by the investigative officer of NIA says that the Srinagar property of Asiya Andrabi is the proceeds of terror activity and has been used for the furtherance of terrorist activities of a proscribed terrorist organisation Dukhtaran-E-Millat.

The notice also says that the Director-General of Police, Jammu and Kashmir has granted his approval for the attachment of the said property.

The property has been attached as ‘proceeds of terror’ under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and now, the property can be neither be sold, transferred or dealt with in any manner without prior permission.

Andrabi was arrested last year by NIA. A case was registered against Dukhtaran-e-Millat.

Security deployed outside Mumbai hotel where rebel Congress MLAs are holed up as Congress leader DK Shivakumar arrives to meet them

Karnataka Congress MLA DK Shivakumar and JD(S) MLA Shivalinge Gowda have arrived in Mumbai to hold talks with the rebel Congress MLAs. The rebel MLAs flew to Mumbai last week after submitting their resignations.

The rebel leaders have approached the Mumbai Police saying they are feeling ‘threatened’. They claim that the leaders from their state would ‘storm’ the hotel where they are staying. The leaders have expressed that they do not wish to meet them and requested police to not allow them to enter the hotel.

Maharashtra State Reserve Police Force and Riot Control Police are deployed outside the hotel. Meanwhile, Mumbai Police has said that Shivakumar and Gowda will not be allowed to meet the rebel MLAs.

Yesterday, the Karnataka state assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar has rejected the resignations of 8 out of 13 rebel Congress MLAs because they were not in the ‘prescribed format’. The BJP MLAs who had gone to the Vidhan Soudha to meet the Speaker left without meeting him as he was ‘not there’. The speaker has asked for six days’ time to decide on resignations.

The JD(S) also accused the BJP of ‘buying’ MLAs in Karnataka for Rs 1,000 crore. Meanwhile, the BJP has demanded that Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy should resign. Today they will protest at the Gandhi statue in Vidhan Soudha in Karnataka today.

The unholy alliance

Karnataka government has been threatening to collapse ever since the H D Kumaraswamy government sworn in in May last year. The unholy alliance was forged after May 2018 state assembly elections after the BJP which emerged as single largest party with 104 seats could not form a majority in the 222 seat state assembly. Congress and JD(S) had 78 and 38 seats respectively.

The Governor had invited the BJP to form the government since it was the single largest party and B S Yeddyurappa swore in as the chief minister. Congress went to the Supreme Court but the apex court did not entertain the petition. Eventually Yeddyurappa resigned as CM after claiming he did not have the majority. Eventually the Congress-JD(S) led coalition government was formed on May 23.

Yuvraj Singh’s father Yograj Singh calls MS Dhoni a ‘filth’, blames him for retirement of Rayudu

Former Indian pacer and Yuvraj Singh’s father, Yograj Singh has once again attacked MS Dhoni, this time because of Ambati Rayudu’s sudden retirement.

On July 3, Rayudu announced his retirement from International cricket; the decision came after the selectors ignored Rayuduu for the World Cup squad. He was the back-up player of the original team but was not called after Dhawan and Shanker were ruled out of the World cup due to injury.

As per a report by news agency NNIS, Yograj said, “Rayudu should’ve continued playing, more and more. He should’ve played Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy, Duleep Trophy, scoring 100s, 200s, 300s with not outs. He still has a lot of cricket left in him.”

“Rayudu, my son, you decided in haste. Come out of retirement and show them what you are capable of. People like MS Dhoni will not remain forever, filth like these will not remain forever,” he said.

The attack on Dhoni is a bit amusing as Dhoni has no role in the selection of the Indian cricket team at present, as he is no longer the captain. Rayudu played all the matches in IPL for Chennai Super Kings, the team led by MS Dhoni. In International format, the prime wicket-keeper for India is Rishabh Pant, so had Dhoni retired already, Pant would have been the first choice as a keeper.

A few years ago, Yograj had blamed MS Dhoni for Yuvraj Singh’s ouster from Indian cricket.

Supreme Court to hear plea filed by two Rohingya men against Central Government’s plan to deport the illegal immigrants

The Supreme Court will hear a plea filed by two Rohingya men on illegal immigrants and whether they can be granted the status of refugees. The apex court Tuesday agreed to hear the petition against the Central government’s plan to deport about 40,000 Rohingyas members back to their homes in Myanmar.

The Rohingyas fled their home country dreading execution and injustice at the hands of the government, following large scale violence by the Rogingyas against Buddhists and Hindus in Myanmar. An Amnesty International report had confirmed the large scale massacre of Hindus by Rohingyas in the country.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, on behalf of the Rohingyas, submitted before a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi their plea to stop the government’s proposal to deport them and allow the international laws to govern the rights of the community, matter.

“But first decide whether they are refugees… Whether illegal immigrants can even be allowed the status of refugees… This is the substantial question here,” Mehta argued.

In response, the court agreed to examine the “substantial question” on the issue. It also asked the involved parties to finish the pleading till the next date of hearing.

In October 2018, India deported seven Rohingya men to Myanmar, which appears to have stimulated the fears of further actions against the ones who have made refugee camps in India their home. It followed the Supreme Court of India refusing to stop the deportation of the seven.

Thousands of Rohingya Muslims have been escaping the Rakhine state located on the western coast of Myanmar for years. Trapped between the Rohingya insurgents and military war for years, most refugees crossed over to Bangladesh while some entering India.

As per estimates, about 40,000 Rohingyas live in India within camps across the country, including New Delhi. Over the years, thousands of Rohingyas have arrived in India, and they have been illegally settled by vested interested in various parts of the country, including sensitive places like Jammu. A few cases of Rohingya Muslims acquiring fake documents like Aadhaar card, passport etc had also emerged.

Government rejects Congress party’s demand of first row seat for Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha

The government has ignored Congress party’s demand for an additional front row seat in Lok Sabha for its former president and Gandhi dynasty scion Rahul Gandhi. The government has said that Gandhi is not entitled to a front-row seat and he is not even the party president right now to be to benefit from such a privilege.

According to the rules, Congress is entitled to only two front row seats, which will be occupied by Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in his capacity as the Leader of Opposition and Sonia Gandhi as she is the UPA chairperson.

It is a significant development given the fact that seat allotment is currently being finalized in the lower house of the parliament. Apart from Sonia and Adhir, one TMC MP and one YSRCP MP, along with two senior members Farooq Abdullah and Mulayam Singh Yadav are expected to be seated in the first row.

In such a scenario, Gandhi is most likely to be seated in the second or third row of the Lok Sabha. Denying the demand raised by Congress, it has been asserted Gandhi is no longer the party president and is therefore not eligible for such entitlements.

The government further added that it is simply following the rule book of the Lok Sabha, which clearly offers only 2 seats to the Congress party.

This is how the seating arrangement in parliament is decided. As per rule 4 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in Lok Sabha, the members shall sit in such order as determined by the speaker of the house. And the speaker is guided by the direction number 122(1)(a) of the ‘Directions by the Speaker’.

Although the rules say that the speaker has full discretion to allot seats, a formula is used to determine the number of seats allotted to parties having five or more members in each row.

As the Congress party has 52 MPs in Lok Sabha, and there are 20 seats on the front row, 2 seats are available for the Congress party on the front according to this formula.

For parties having less than 5 members, the speaker allocates seats as per discretion. Very senior leaders are generally allowed to take first row seats, irrespective of their party positions.

Congress leader spotted in protest in Ranchi against ‘mob lynching’ that turned violent and attacked bus carrying students

After a protest rally by Muslims held against the alleged mob lynching of Tabrez Ansari turned violent in Surat two days ago, a similar incident has been reported from Ranchi. And like Surat, the involvement of Congress leaders in the violent protest Ranchi has emerged.

According to a report by Republic TV, a protest was organised in Ranchi against the lynching of Ansari who had died in police custody four days after he was beaten by a mob for stealing a two-wheeler. In a video accessed by the TV channel, Congress spokesperson from Jharkhand Shamsher Alam was seen in on the stage. According to sources, he was trying to provoke the situation by creating communal tension.

Videos of the Ranchi protest venue show that a violent ruckus was created at the venue, and a mob had attacked a bus carrying 50 students. The mob had pelted stone at the bus, and some of them even tried to burn it. But few sensible persons present at the protest intervened and prevented a major tragedy from happening.

The video shows the bus being attacked by several people which was passing by the protest venue in Ranchi. According to reports, glasses of the bus were broken, and the mob also chanted communally sensitive slogans. Some of the mob talked about killing the students by torching the bus. There were two police jeeps present nearby but they didn’t take any step to stop the mob.

According to reports, the bus was carrying students of CIT Engineering College who were returning from appearing for their final semester exam in Doranda College. When the bus reached the protest venue, some people in the rally stopped it and proceeded to attack it. They also thrashed the driver of the bus. At that time some students inside the bus shouted that they are Muslims. Hearing that, the mob asked the Muslim students to get down from the bus and resumed vandalising the vehicle. According to the students, people in the mob were shouting ‘beat them’, ‘torch the bus’ etc. Someone even threw petrol inside the bus in an attempt to burn it. But at that moment some elder persons present at the protest venue stopped the mob from torching the bus. They also helped the bus to go away from that location.

The incident had happened on 5th July, and police have already started an investigation into the case. Congress leader Shamsher Alam’s name also has been mentioned in the FIR. Police have said that the speakers at the protest made provocative statements which led the crowd to become violent.  So far no arrest has been in the case, and police is studying the CCTV footage to identify the culprits. Police had registered a case against 8 known and 200 unknown persons in the case.

Eye-witnesses had said that the rally from Chowk bazar area was taken out on a July 5 (Friday), as it was Jumma, a holy and auspicious day for the Muslim community. However, when the rally reached near Vivekanand circle police tried to stop them as it was not authorised. The crowd then became violent and started pelting stones at the police.

In the video of the rally posted on social media, the crowd is seen holding a banner of Versatile Minority Forum, which also says  ‘President: Advocate Babu Pathan’. It may be noted that according to the Twitter profile of advocate Babu Pathan alias Ishtiyaque Pathan, he is the Vice President of Suat City Congress Committee.

An alleged bike thief Tabrez Ansari who was caught and beaten up by a mob in Dhatkidih, Jharkhand, on suspicion of bike theft on 18 June, had died some days later in police custody. An investigation team set up by the government had concluded that Ansari might have died due to stress-induced cardiac arrest. Medical reports had established that no internal injury was found on his body. Therefore, the police had dismissed the allegations of ‘mob-lynching’ as a cause of his death. However, protests and politicization over his death have continued across India.

Recently, similar protests over Tabrez Ansari’s death were reported from Meerut and Agra.
