Mamata Banerjee declines to go for the all party meeting called by West Bengal Governor, calls him a BJP mouthpiece

West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee declined to go for the all-party meeting convened by the WB Governor, claiming that law and order was a state subject and “not the governor’s”. Calling the Governor BJP’ mouthpiece, TMC supremo claimed that KN Tripathi had called for the meeting at the behest of the BJP.

“They (the governor) are the mouthpiece of the BJP. The BJP has asked him to hold an all-party meeting and that is why it has been called,” Banerjee told reporters.

“He (Tripathi) had called me also. But I said I cannot go because you are the governor and I am the elected government. Above all, law and order is a state subject. It is not your subject,” she said.

In the backdrop of the surging incidents of post-poll violence in the state, the West Bengal Governor, Keshari Nath Tripathi has called an all-party meeting on June 13, Thursday at 4 pm at Governor’s house. Tripathi has sent a letter to all prominent political parties in Bengal including ruling party TMC, BJP, Congress and Left, urging them to attend the meet.

On Sunday, clashes had erupted between TMC and BJP workers in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, killing several BJP workers.

Welcoming the Governor’s initiative, West Bengal BJP unit president Dilip Ghosh said the state government should have taken the initiative.

While West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh, Congress and CPI(M) state heads Somen Mitra and Surya Kanta Mishra are scheduled to participate in the meeting at the Raj Bhavan, Mamata showing complete disregard for the constitution head said, the governor could call people for a cup of tea or a peace meeting, adding, “So I am sending a party representative there. He will go there, have a cup of tea and come back.”

TMC secretary-general Partha Chatterjee is supposed to represent the All India Trinamool Congress in the all-party meeting today.

Earlier, disregarding the Governor’s standing, Mamata Banerjee had reacted to KN Tripathi’s suggestion, that, President’s rule be imposed in the state saying that a plan is being hatched to turn Bengal into Gujarat.

The poll violence in Bengal has aggravated after BJP made successful inroads by bagging 18 seats in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls. Several reports of BJP workers and supporters attacked in Bengal have emerged as a result of the political slugfest.

Mamata blames ‘outsiders’, ‘BJP Conspiracy’ for Doctors’ protest; doctors and interns do not wish to work for ‘mad dictator’

The chain of events that have been initiated in West Bengal since Monday night is truly unprecedented in the recent history of the state. After doctors and interns at the NRS Medical College and hospital in Kolkata were attacked following the death of Mohammed Sayeed, an old man who is claimed to have died of natural causes, doctors across the state shut down services in a protest demanding adequate security and immediate action against perpetrators.

And as fate would have it since the protests began, attacks against doctors have further escalated and mobs have attacked students and interns at the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital as well. In the incident at Burdwan, the involvement of local goons was strongly suspected by the besieged doctors.

The matter has not remained confined to Burdwan and the NRS Hospital alone. On Wednesday night, the Calcutta National Medical College was attacked by unidentified goons and two rooms in one of the hostels were burnt down. Allegedly, Kerosene bombs were used to achieve the desired purpose. We were told by a postgraduate doctor at the institution, “Two rooms were set on fire, they were totally burnt. The Police came later and have shut down the rooms for now for further investigation. The rooms were in the Linton hostel which is for junior doctors and students.”

Photographs of the charred rooms have flooded social media again and members of the fraternity are quite anguished. It is of grave concern that protests which were initiated with a demand to ensure that these incidents never occur again have only led to a situation where medical institutions across the state are being attacked.

Mamata Banerjee, for her part, has done very little to assuage the concerns of the medical community. Instead, she has politicized the entire accused it to be a conspiracy by her political opponents. “The government will not take any responsibility of those who would not do so (join duty). They will also have to vacate the hostels (if they don’t join work),” the chief minister told the media. “The state spends Rs 25 lakh on each doctor and then they shirk work. This won’t be tolerated. Are they doctors!” she said.

Distressingly, Banerjee accused the doctors of being “outsiders”. Drawing a rather bewildering analogy with the Police, she stated, “They are outsiders. The government will not support them in any way. I condemn doctors who have gone on strike. Policemen die in the line of duty but the police don’t go on a strike.”

“You have to give service to the people. You cannot be a doctor without providing service to the people. Similarly, police cannot call for a strike. It is their duty. It is unfortunate that the BJP and CPI(M) are doing politics here. They are playing Hindu-Muslim card here. Health minister Chandrima Bhattacharya met junior doctors on Wednesday and requested them to speak to me. I was holding the call but they just refused to talk to me over phone,” she added while accusing her political opponents of playing divisive politics.

While CPIM found mention as she addressed the media, Mamata Banerjee told India Today TV that the protests were a BJP conspiracy. During the early phases of her tenure as Chief Minister, she often blamed Maoists when questions were raised about the policies of her government. With the saffron surge in Bengal, it appears that it is now the BJP’s turn to be blamed.

Mamata Banerjee’s remarks have only aggravated the concerns of the medical fraternity. There was already a great sense of fear with the attacks on medical institutions at various place, now after her statements, their fears have only been heightened.

“We are planning to evacuate the hostels. She (Banerjee) told us that we should, therefore we are planning to move out,” the postgraduate doctor at CNMC told OpIndia.com. “Many of us come from far off places, we are not sure where we will go. A lot of our friends at the institution are from Kolkata, so maybe we will take refuge at their place for a while. We are not sure.”

A junior doctor from Kolkata Medical College (KMC) told us, “She is behaving like a mad dictator. She hasn’t even made any assurances and she’s threatening us! She is not even trying to address what went wrong and what we experienced. Yet she expects us to work. If she cannot ensure the safety of the government employees, why should they work under her?” There were significant threats to doctors and interns at the KMC on Tuesday night and more specifically, to the girls’ hostel by unidentified people, OpIndia.com was told.

The prevailing sentiment is that the demands were not out of order. “We made legitimate demands, we only wanted more security and punishment for the perpetrators of the attack. When such mobs attack, it’s not only the doctors and interns who suffer. The other patients are affected as well because we can’t treat them properly with such a huge crowd present at the scene,” we were told.

The junior doctor from KMC told us, “All of us are just disgusted. We feel it’s just not worth it to work under an unreasonable mad dictator who doesn’t even bother to address our concerns.”

A doctor at an esteemed private medical institution, who was present at the protests at the NRS hospital on Tuesday, told OpIndia.com, “There is universal incredulity at the statements of the Chief Minister. The attempts to portray this as a political protest and use that excuse to deny justice to the assaulted doctors are being seen by everyone as unacceptable. There is the talk of plans for mass resignations from various quarters.”

We have heard of Hospital Staff offering their resignations from various other sources as well. Presently, we cannot confirm or deny these claims. We will update our readers when we have more information regarding the same.

People who are not associated with the medical fraternity as well are quite angry with Mamata Banerjee’s threats. A former student of Calcutta University told us, “She (Banerjee) doesn’t deserve to be the Chief Minister anymore. Instead of punishing the culprits and providing security to the doctors, she is threatening them. What kind of nonsense is this? Instead of fulfilling the legitimate demands, she is busy playing politics over it.”

From the turn of events, it certainly appears that Mamata Banerjee has turned it into a political battle rather than as a case of apolitical dissatisfaction with the administration over the lack of security to the medical fraternity. In doing so, she has further agitated the medical fraternity and only aggravated their fears and anguish. It has turned into genuine resentment and anger.

The unintended victims of the state government’s apathy are the patients who are unable to receive the treatment necessary and their families who are unable to meet their wards. From Banerjee’s remarks, there appears to be a concerted attempt to manipulate public sentiment and turn them against the doctors and interns and deflect attention from her own government’s incompetence. A sinister game is being played here and the consequences of it could be devastating.

The medical fraternity feels that the media is in Trinamool’s pockets. We were told that ABP Ananda had falsely claimed that emergency services at the SSKM Hospital were resumed only after Banerjee’s threat when in reality it was already active even before she reached the place. There was also the sentiment that the media is not covering the issue fairly and an active participant in turning public sentiment against the medical fraternity.

The general sentiment is that the state government is trying to intimidate the medical fraternity into resuming normal services without making any assurances regarding their security. A genuine animosity has developed under these circumstances. The state government can still resolve the matter if it chooses to but it appears Mamata Banerjee is in no mood to relent.

Mamata Banerjee’s threat to the medical fraternity and the angst and fears of the latter should ideally have dominated news cycles. However, it appears national media is least bothered about the entire matter. None of the mainstream media outlets has reported on the matter in detail. This could very well turn out to be Mamata Banerjee’s Singur moment and the mainstream media appears to be either sleeping or providing cover to the state government’s incompetence.

How media glossed over the fact that dancers were asked to strip at an Eid celebration and not just any ‘cultural event’

Recently, in a horrific incident, girls of the rainbow dance group were invited to perform for an event celebrating Eid and were then heckled by a mob and forced to strip naked and dance. One vehicle of the dance group was also attacked by axes and steel digger bars, causing substantial damage to the vehicle.

The Rainbow dance group’s director Arup D Rabha filed an FIR with Boko police station regarding the incident, where he has named Kuddus Ali, Sayed Khan, Atikul Islam, Samajuddin, Jeherul Islam and Abbas Ali, along with all the members of the organising committee of the event as the accused in the case. Shahrukh Khan and Subahan Khan were arrested on Sunday as well.

The reportage surrounding this horrific incident has been nothing short of shameful, to say the least.

The Media has conveniently glossed over the fact that the horrific incident actually took place during an Eid celebration, staying true to their tradition of underreporting crimes related to the minority community.

The India Today report was headlined “Woman dancers forced to strip during a cultural event in Assam, NCW takes notice”.

India Today headline

In the article itself, India Today does mention that two men, Shahrukh Khan and Subahan Khan were arrested, but nowhere in the report do they bother mentioning that this shameful incident happened at an Eid festival event.

Hindustan Times headlined its report, “3 more detained in Assam for trying to force female dancers to strip”.

Hindustan Times report

In their article, the only place where they mention that this was an Eid festival, is while mentioning a direct quote by the Director of the Dance group.

The quote mentioned by Hindustan Times is as follows:

“We later found that the organisers had promised the spectators a naked dance show as part of post-Eid celebrations and had collected money promising a troupe from Cooch Behar in West Bengal,” said Rabha.

Times Now too wasn’t far behind. They too called his a ‘cultural event’, while in the report, thankfully, they named the 2 persons arrested.

Times Now report

Interestingly, India Times too followed the same suit. The report was filed by a journalist called Shweta Sengar.

Article by India Times

The article by Shweta Senger was an original report with no agency input mentioned. Even then, the report failed to mention that this was an Eid festival celebration.

Local media had reported extensively and any journalist or agency, had they bothered to look, would have realised the nature of the event at which this incident took place.

Shweta Senger herself has a history of pandering to communal sentiments. Earlier, she had reported that a Muslim doctor was beaten up and the crowd said ‘Muslims should leave India’ to him. As it turns out, this was a fabrication by Senger and after an OpIndia fact-check, the report by India Times was updated with Senger continuing to mouth inanities.

These headlines and stories that asserted that the horrendous incident took place at a ‘cultural’ event were staff reports by the publication’s team and not agency reports and hence, the blame for presenting an incomplete picture of the incident to the readers rests solely with them.

There were other portals that carried the agency report sent by PTI. Among those were NDTV, Huffington Post and several other media organisations.

One must ask why PTI, being a reputable news agency too chose to gloss over the fact that the shameful incident of dancers being attacked by a mob and forced to strip took place at an Eid celebration.

The Media has often tried to gloss over crimes by the minority community and this seems like another lazy attempt to do the same. Recently, OpIndia’s investigation had revealed that self-proclaimed fact-checker, AltNews, had fabricated a quote from the police just to downplay the brutality heaped on the little victim from Aligarh, whose perpetrators were Zahid and Aslam.

Former ISRO chief Madhavan Nair says UPA government delayed Chandrayaan-2 mission

Yesterday, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)  released the first pictures of Chandrayaan-2, India’s second mission to the moon and its Chairman Kailasavadivoo Sivan announced July 15 as its launch date.

While India exults this milestone development under the Modi led government, former chairman of ISRO, G. Madhavan Nair (2003-2009), has made some sensational disclosures over the delay in India’s second lunar exploration mission after Chandrayaan-1.

G Madhavan Nair on Wednesday claimed that the Chandrayaan-2 mission could have been carried out long ago but the “political decision” of the then UPA government to push the “Mangalyaan” venture with an eye on the 2014 Lok Sabha election caused the delay.

G Madhavan Nair, who architected Chandrayaan-1, India’s first unmanned mission to the moon launched on October 22, 2008, had announced in August 2009, that Chandrayaan-2 was slated for launch towards the end of 2012.

Nair alleged that the UPA government wanted to show “some major event” (the Mangalyaan Mars orbiter mission) before the 2014 election. “With that objective, they (UPA government) went ahead (with the Mangalyaan mission),” he said.

Interestingly, though the Mangalyaan launch took place during the UPA regime (November 2013), the spacecraft reached the Mars orbit during the Narendra Modi government (September 2014), Nair noted. “So, it did not serve the purpose (of the then UPA regime). More of a political thing (to take up the Mars mission, ahead of Chandrayaan-2) than technical,” he said.

“Almost half the work (for Chandrayaan-2) was done earlier, but all those things were diverted for the Mars mission. So, we (ISRO) had to start from scratch. Only after this (Modi) regime came (in 2014), they reinstated the old programme (Chandrayaan-2),” Nair told PTI. Nair praised ISRO for rendering the mission in “minimum time”.

Apart from this, ISRO committed to honouring the wish the Prime Minister, has been working steadfast to send three Indians to space by 2022. Recently, ISRO signed an MoU with the Indian Air Force (IAF) to select and train astronauts for India’s first manned mission, the Gaganyaan project, Modi’s dream mission.

Here is how AltNews fabricated a police quote to downplay the brutality heaped on the Aligarh child victim

Self-proclaimed fact-checking portal AltNews not only tried to whitewash the brutal murder of two-and-a-half-year-old Tina (name changed) in Aligarh but also conjured up statements and wrongly attributed the same to Aligarh SSP Akash Kulhary.

In its report dated 6th June, AltNews had quoted SSP Kulhary and said,

Alt News contacted Akash Kulhary, SSP Aligarh who confirmed that the post-mortem report does not mention rape, adding, The post-mortem report mentions death by strangulation as the cause. The claims circulating on social media that the victim’s eyes were gouged out and her arm amputated, are also false. Also, the claim that acid was poured on her body, is untrue. No such thing has occurred. The post-mortem report has been shared with the family of the victim.”

OpIndia got in touch with SSP Kulhary who denied having given any such quote to AltNews.  Speaking to OpIndia, SSP Kulhary clarified that the post-mortem report had no such claims whether the child was raped or not. He added that the police have sent the post-mortem report to at least two hospitals right now with queries.

OpIndia asked SSP Kulhary whether he gave any statement to AltNews where he denied that the victim’s eyes were not gouged out and her arm was not amputated. SSP Kulhary categorically denied having given the statement.

(if the audio player above is not working or you can’t see an audio player, click here to listen to the conversation on Youtube)

OpIndia: There is a quote in your name by one website called AltNews where they have quoted you saying that the claim…

SSP Kulhary: Nahin, amputation of right arm has taken place. Report mein likha hua hai (it is written in the report).

OpIndia: So kya unhone galat quote attribute kiya hoga? (So have they wrongly attributed the quote to you?)

SSP Kulhary: Yes, obviously. I think so.

SSP Kuhlary then said that the updates, in this case, can be expected in 3-4 days.

As can be seen, not only does AltNews whitewash the crimes of Zahid and Aslam, it also cooks up quotes by police officers to ‘debunk’ social media ‘lies’.

In its report titled “Murder of a child in Aligarh: Fact-checking social media claims”, AltNews had accused OpIndia of ‘falsely claiming’ that the victim’s eyes were gouged out. To debunk this, he had used SSP Kulhary’s made-up statement. However, post-mortem report mentioned ‘eye tissue absent, orbital socket intact’.

Post-mortem report on Aligarh case (image: journalist @anjanaomkashyap on Twitter)

OpIndia showed the post-mortem report to a couple of doctors and they said that the baby died due to injuries caused to her. “The injuries were severe enough to lead to shock and eventually death. Shock is confirmed by the collapse of vessels (antemortem sign). Major blood loss happened before death,” a doctor confirmed that there were brutalities on the child.

“The most important of all is that her abdominal organs are missing, including the uterus and genital organs. She might have been subjected to extreme torture and this can also be the cause of excessive blood loss and collapse of the blood vessels. Other injuries include fracture of the leg below knee and amputation of humerus (arm). These injuries point towards brutality. Vaginal swabs have been taken for examination but due to decomposition, they are less likely to be useful. It should be made clear that negative results on swab does not rule out a sexual act.”

“The injuries 2 (right arm amputated) and 3 (left leg fracture) are definitely before her death. Her abdominal organs are missing. That is also most likely an antemortem act. But cannot confirm based on this report. They have not mentioned if the abdomen was open or was the coverings decomposed. The opening of the left side of the chest is also confusing. It can be an antemortem or decomposition in case the body was lying on the left side,” the doctor said.

Amusingly, the same set of self-declared activists find a police statement the ultimate truth when it suits them while rejecting even court observations when it doesn’t suit them. We have all seen how despite multiple policemen and investigation reports saying so, these self-proclaimed ‘fact-checkers’ do not believe police statements declaring Ishrat Jahan a terrorist.

Further, another ground report by Swarajya’s Swati Goel Sharma has revealed that another perpetrator, Aslam, has been booked twice under POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act.

In 2014, Aslam was booked under IPC 376 (rape) and sections 3 and 4 of POCSO (penetrative sexual assault) Act for raping his nine-year-old daughter after taking her to a field (FIR number 41/14). In 2015, he was booked under the UP Goonda Act under various sections (FIR number 43/015).

Similarly, in 2017, Aslam was booked under sections 452 (house-trespass) and 354 (outraging modesty of a woman) and sections 7 and 8 of POCSO (sexual assault) for molesting a minor girl after breaking into her house (FIR number 76/017).

In addition, locals also spoke about a prominent case where Aslam sexually assaulted a minor boy for two weeks. Mohit Pratap Singh, Aslam’s neighbour confirmed that “about two years ago, he brought a minor boy from Delhi and kept him in confinement for two weeks. It was only after a police team from Delhi raided his house and rescued the boy that we came to even know about it.” Scores of locals corroborated this incident.

However, once the post-mortem report was out, AltNews updated its original report to state that they once again contacted SSP Kulhary who confirmed that the arm was amputated. Essentially, they first ‘debunked’ the social media claim that the child was subjected to brutality and then updated the report to add how ‘oh, well, only her arm was amputated’. Instead of retracting the shoddy piece, AltNews ended up downplaying the brutality.

Now that the SSP has categorically denied having given such statement to AltNews, one wonders how they reached this conclusion in the first place.

This throws light on multiple points.

  1. AltNews relied on a police officer’s statement instead of a post-mortem to ‘fact-check’ social media rumours.
  2. AltNews conjured up and wrongly attributed a statement to a police officer contrary to the post-mortem report to prove a point.
  3. AltNews not only whitewashes crimes but also creates its own evidence to ‘fact-check’ cases as per its own whims and fancies.
  4. AltNews also does not know that preliminary post-mortem report (in Aligarh case or any other case) would not mention whether rape has taken place or not. In Kathua rape and murder case too, the post-mortem report mentioned blood on labia, vulval lacerations, vaginal bleeding, hymen not intact and blood marks on the thighs and abdomen. Essentially, the post-mortem report or an autopsy is an examination of the corpse to determine the cause of death or to evaluate the injury. According to a doctor OpIndia spoke to, usually, the confirmation of rape is done after swab reports. Aligarh post-mortem report was a preliminary one and the viscera/swab report takes about a week to a month to come by. Preliminary reports would usually be inconclusive.
  5. AltNews chose to ‘fact-check’ these social media claims as if social media was highlighting this case only because the perpetrators were Muslims and the crime was committed during the holy month of Ramzan.

Maybe AltNews should stick to ‘fact-checking’ memes.

Video and stats highlights from Australia v Pakistan match

“Thought I might never score hundred for Australia again,” said Warner in post-match talk.

Warner’s first hundred for Australia after making his comeback into International cricket helped Australia to win the match against Pakistan.

After winning the toss in overcast condition, Pakistan opted to bowl. Both the teams included extra pacer in their playing XIs.

Warner and Finch started cautiously in the first few overs, seeing the new ball. Once they got to set, they went after the bowling. The pair added 146 runs for the first wicket in just 22 overs. Mohammad Amir got the breakthrough when he dismissed Finch who made run a ball 82. Warner reached his hundred in 102 balls, but others around him just kept slogging and throwing away their wickets.

The Australian innings got over in the 49th over, an unexpected end to their innings after such a brilliant start. Mohammad Amir bowled an excellent spell, taking 5 for 30 in 10 overs when everyone else leaked runs more than 6 per over.

Australian Innings

Pakistan started poorly in the run chase, losing Fakhar in the third over with just two runs on board. Imam was joined by Baba Azam and added 54 runs for the 2nd wicket. The partnership which kept Pakistan in the hunt, first between Imam and Azam and then Imam with Hafeez, pushed them close to the target. However, a sudden collapse in the middle overs put Pakistan on the backfoot. They lost four wickets for just 24 runs, but as usual, Pakistan kept surprising the fans and experts. First Hasan Ali blasted 32 off only 17 balls, and then Wahab smashed 45 off 39 keeping the hopes alive.

Pakistan required just 54 off 48 to win the match when Finch gave the ball to Starc, who dismissed both Wahab and Amir in the same over and got the game in Australia’s favour.

Pakistan innings (fall of wickets)

Stats

  • Aaron Finch became the 4th Australian to hit 100 or more sixes in ODIs.
  • David Warner scored his 15th ODI hundred, only Ponting (30), Mark Waugh (18), and Gilchrist (16) have score more hundred for Australia in ODIs.
  • Mohammad Amir (5 for 30) took his maiden 5-wicket haul in ODIs.
  • Coulter-Nile took his 50th ODI wicket in the match.

Uttar Pradesh: Director of Madrasa arrested for giving triple talaq after his wife complained to CM Yogi Adityanath

In a first, the Uttar Pradesh police have arrested a director of a madrasa for illegally divorcing his wife through banned practise of Triple Talaq.

According to the reports, the Agra police arrested the husband on the orders of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, after his wife alleged that he had given her triple talaq besides beating her up and demanding dowry.

The police arrested Agra’s Rakabganj resident Chukru Rehman aka Zikru Rehman after his wife Tarannum Begum had approached CM Yogi Adityanath alleging that her husband had given her triple talaq. She had told the chief minister that he had recently divorced her for no reason by uttering words talaqthrice.

Initially, the Malpura police station of Agra did not act on the complaint and was instead trying to pressure Tarrunum, a mother of three, to compromise. Later, Javed Ali, the victim’s brother went to Chief Minister’s Office, who then intervened and ordered the police officials to lodge FIR against Rahman.

The Agra police then lodged a case against Chukru Rehman and arrested him on Tuesday after which he was sent to judicial custody, the police officials said.

Reportedly, the couple has three children. In her letter, Tarannum had accused her husband of marrying another woman from his own madrasa before divorcing her and forcing her out of the house, the officials added.

Speaking to the media following the arrests of her husband, Tarannum Begum expressed her happiness over the quick action by the UP Chief Minister’s office. Reportedly, Tarannum Begum told that she always had faith that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will definitely take action in her case and she was very grateful for the prompt action.

Indian Air Force finds no survivors at the AN-32 crash site, families informed

An Indian Air Force (IAF) search team reached the AN-32 crash site today, two days after locating the wreckage. The team did not find any survivors and the families of the 13 personnel have been informed the same.

The IAF paid tributes to the Air-warriors who have lost their lives and has said that it stands by the families of the victims.

The AN-32 transport aircraft of the Indian Airforce had gone missing after it got airborne from Jorhat in Assam at around 1225 hrs for Menchuka Advance Landing Ground in Arunachal Pradesh.

After 8 days of searching, IAF found the wreckage of the aircraft in Gate village in Payum area of West Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh. It was spotted by the IAF Mi-17 helicopter, 16Km North of Lipo, at an approximate elevation of 12000 ft.

After having spotted the wreckage, the IAF yesterday mobilised 15 personnel for rescue operations and were expected to reach the site last night.

TMC troll speaks in Bengali on English news channel in response to others speaking in Hindi, despite already knowing that it was a Hindi show

Taking the debate of Hindi imposition to next level, political analyst and TMC troll Garga Chatterjee scored a self-goal on a live show by speaking in Bengali and fought with the anchor over Hindi imposition despite him being informed that the show was in Hindi.

Appearing on a debate on political violence in West Bengal and the face-off between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Home ministry on the CNN News18, political analyst Garga Chatterjee decided to speak in Bengali as he thought that anchor Shreya Dhoundiyal and all other guests present on the show were pushing the agenda of Hindi imposition by speaking in Hindi.

Anchor Shreya Dhoundial, who is also a standby defence expert of the channel, asked whether Garga Chatterjee was trying to make any point by speaking in Bengali in a Hindi news show. However, Chatterjee reacted to Shreya Dhoundial by saying that she “should not have a guilty conscience”, when she asked him to switch to English if he was not comfortable in Hindi. He argued that if other panellists in the show are allowed to speak in their mother tongue Hindi on an English channel, he also should be allowed to speak in Bengali.

The debate on CNN News18 soon deviated from the main issue of political violence in West Bengal into a war of words between the anchor and Garga Chatterjee over the subject of whether CNN News18 is a Hindi or an English channel.

Soon, Shreya Dhoundial posted a clarification tweet saying that CNN News 18 is an English News Channel but the channel hosts two Hindi shows daily at 10 am and 7 pm. She also said that each guest who is invited to the show, including Garga Chatterjee was also informed that the show was in Hindi.

If claims of Shreya Dhoundial are believed to be true, it is rather intriguing to know why was Garga Chatterjee began to propagate his agenda by speaking in Bengali despite the fact that he was informed that the show will be in Hindi. If he was against Hindi, he could have said no to a Hindi program. Garga Chatterjee perhaps successfully used the opportunity to deflect the issue by speaking in Bengali as maybe he did not have sufficient answers to counter the allegations on raising political violence in West Bengal under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

However, Garga Chatterjee did not stop there. He took on to Twitter to post abusive tweets targetting Hindi speaking citizens.

Garga Chatterjee, a vocal supporter of the TMC and an abusive troll has a habit of raking up issues to create polarisation on linguistic lines. Last year, Railway minister Piyush Goyal had announced Kolkatta city metro’s decision of including information in Bengali in its smart cards. Taking an opportunity to target ‘Hindi imposition’ Garga had interpreted the tweet as the ‘Hindi imperial centre’ had now sensed the power of ‘Bengali resistance’.

Due to dwindling viewership numbers, several English News Channels have started including Hindi programs. It was started by Arnab Goswami who started using both English and Hindi in his shows on Republic and allowed the panellists also to do so. This was followed by Time Now when they converted their morning show into Hindi. After that CNN-News18 had also started a Hindi show called Bottomline at the 7 PM slot.

While West Bengal burns, Rahul Kanwal conducts a jolly interview with newly elected Trinamool MP Mimi Chakraborty

Mimi Chakraborty, the newly elected Trinamool MP from the Jadavpur Lok Sabha Constituency, appeared on India Today on Wednesday. During the interview, ‘esteemed journalist’ Rahul Kanwal asked her to sing a song and appeared to be in awe of the actress. Thus, while West Bengal burns, the interview with Chakraborty was quite a jolly affair.

Kanwal met Nusrat Jahan as well, the Trinamool MP from Basirhat. The show was called ‘Jab We Met’ and in the clips, it can be seen that the journalist and Chakraborty are eating phuchkas together and playing football at a time when elected representatives from West Bengal, especially from the ruling disposition, ought to be questioned on the chaos that the state is facing.

The interview also reveals that the media itself does not take Mimi Chakraborty seriously merely because she is a young actress. In its own way, it is a very obnoxious brand of sexism where attractive young women are reduced to their mere beauty and are not taken seriously.

From the tweet, it appears clear that Rahul Kanwal was not interviewing Chakraborty in her capacity as an actress but as a ‘star MP’. Kanwal, then, ought to have asked her questions that concerns people and her solutions as an elected representative. Instead, the interview came across as a PR propaganda for a politician.

Especially given the circumstances, when there is great angst among the people of Bengal due to the deteriorating law and order situation, such an interview appears rather disgraceful. On Monday, nearly 200 people descended at the NRS Hospital in Kolkata and attacked doctors and interns after the death of an old patient due to natural causes.

Following the incident, doctors have started protests demanding adequate safety, immediate arrests of the perpetrators and an inquiry into police inaction during the violence. They have shut down services which is impacting patients as well. Moreover, the violence has spread to other colleges and regions as well.

In Burdwan, a mob attacked the students and doctors of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital injuring several of them. All because they were protesting in solidarity with the aggrieved students of NRS Hospital. There are reports of violence at other places coming in as well.

Under such circumstances, an elected representative from the ruling party in West Bengal was interviewed by India Today and it doesn’t appear she was asked a single question about the ongoing crisis. It is extremely unethical on the part of a media outlet to act and behave as the propaganda wing of political parties which is exactly what India Today has done here. It was also extremely sexist in the sense that Mimi Chakraborty was reduced to her attractiveness and not treated with the seriousness that she, as an elected representative, commands.
