How an edited video is being circulated to claim Modi insulted the National Anthem

0

The photoshop factory has started working. A video is viral on social media which claims that Prime Minister Narendra Modi insulted the National anthem while it was being played today at the Independence day function at the Red Fort. The video shows that during the national anthem, Modi is drinking a glass of water, when in fact he should have been standing still, paying his respects to the national anthem.

The video was shared by a page called “Bolta Hindustan”

The video shows that right in between the national anthem, i.e. when the verse containing “Punjab, Sindh” was being sung, Modi drank water. The impression given is that Modi drank water when the anthem was being sung. At that the time of writing this article, the Facebook post had over 16000 shares and over 3600 reactions.

The same video, with a different audio, was shared by a person who claims to be ex-General secretary of Gujarat Congress IT cell:

So what is the truth?

A closer look at the video and one can realise firstly that Modi’s action of drinking water is being shown on a loop, not only at the verse containing “Punjab Sindh”, but also at “Dravid, utkala”. The video is frozen, slowed down etc, whereas the audio keeps on playing. This is a clear-cut indication that the video is not genuine.

The conclusive proof comes from watching the original feed on youtube.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJFATFA4xjc?start=5663]

This clip is after Modi has ended his speech of nearly 90 minutes. He is seen exhorting the children to shout patriotic slogans. At 1.37.47 minutes in the video, Modi reaches for a glass of water, and almost as soon as he does that, the national anthem starts. Quickly realising this, he keeps the glass back. This happens in the span of 3 seconds odd.

This moment has been maliciously edited and placed much further in the national anthem to spread falsehoods about the prime minister. It has been depicted as if Modi drank water well into the national anthem.

Many on social media have already shared this malicious video blaming the Prime Minister for insulting the National Anthem and that it was also furthered by someone from Congress, comes as no surprise.

From Fragile Five to Top Five : India with Modi

0

It is a good thing that Prime Minister Modi chose to remind people of this country that India was considered a part of the “Fragile Five” back in the year 2013. That is where 10 years of mindless governance, endless corruption and influence peddling had led the country. During the global boom of 2003-2007, India grew like gangbusters and the UPA and its cronies in ‘civil society’ gobbled up mountains of cash. After the crash of 2008, the skeletons started tumbling out of the closet one by one. Sadly, it came too late in the day to prevent the Congress from winning in 2009.

That is why UPA-II was a disaster right from the start. In 2014, they didn’t just lose. They collapsed. Good of Modi to remind the people of that.

While Modi pointed out that India is now the sixth largest economy in the world, he should have pointed out that those are 2017 numbers. As per IMF estimates, India’s GDP in 2017 was just a few billion $$$ short of the UK. There is no economist in the world who doubts that this tiny gap will be bridged in 2018 and India will officially become the world’s fifth largest economy.

From fragile five to top five, this has been India’s journey with Modi. Not under Modi, but with him.

I am no great fan of socialism. However, I am a huge fan of political survival. When Modi left Gujarat, he was faced with a larger nation that does not generally share the pro-business outlook of his home state. The Prime Minister understood this keenly, because of which the government promptly devoted itself to welfare schemes. For this, we must also thank the opposition for going too far with criticism too early in Modi’s term. As a result, the government never took its eye off the welfare wagon for even one second. The result is that Modi’s pro-poor image is one of the strongest ever.

The amazing thing is that welfare schemes have happened over the last four years without making hopeless compromises on the fiscal responsibility front. I know that Jaitley is not a favourite on the Hindu right, but he has to be lauded for this.

As such, the Modi sarkar scores massively on the welfare front, even more than the UPA. Not only has the BJP government been more generous with rolling out new welfare schemes, it has in fact improved delivery of the existing ones.

The remarkable thing is that several welfare schemes are aimed at nudging people towards a higher living standard rather than lifelong handouts. For example, the Saubhagya Yojana gives free electricity connections but not free electricity. The super successful Ujjwala Yojana, which now has 5 crore beneficiaries, provides free gas connections to BPL families. The administrative cost of Rs 1600 per connection is borne by the government but free LPG gas is not provided.

The Jan Dhan Yojana should be put in the same category, where no-frills bank accounts were opened for the poor. Modi sarkar did not provide free money, it provided financial inclusion. In the long run, that is more valuable. How do you go out and make your own money unless you are part of the system? The Jan Dhan Yojana was also seamlessly integrated with Direct Benefits Transfer (DBT) so that subsidies reached bank accounts directly, cutting out corrupt middlemen. Stopping the leakages has played a big role in India keeping its budget math right.

Then there is Mudra, which is arguably halfway between a welfare scheme and a stimulus package for small businesses. Since the scheme was launched, some 12 crore people have received small business loans, of which  70-80%  have been women. Turning 9 crore Indian women from poorer sections of society into wealth creators is a social churn that will yield dividends for generations to come.

Gender equality is arguably the most effective way of creating a prosperous society. Female participation in our workforce is around 27%, which is bad enough, not to mention that much of it is caught up in low skill, low wage work. Imagine the amount of economic productivity that is tied up with nearly half of the population left behind. Even a simple scheme such as Ujjwala, which frees up a woman from collecting firewood and enhances her health, is actually a big impetus for the economy. Underneath every social change lies a shift in the economy.

With respect to gender equality, there was also one big headline today in the PM’s speech.

This is what real empowerment looks like. The anti-national, far left crowd, working under the garb of feminism, seeks to weaponize women’s issues into a bludgeon to beat Hindu society with.

We are Hindus. In our culture, Shakti is the goddess who has ten hands, each with a different weapon. This is how we fight back.

The biggest announcement, of course, was Ayushman Bharat, now renamed as Pradhan Mantri Jan Aarogya Yojana. As a matter of realpolitik, it was good to put Pradhan Mantri right in the name of the scheme. The Prime Minister has created the largest healthcare scheme in the world and the scheme deserves to be branded as such.

Therefore, beginning Sept 25, the birth anniversary of Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay, as many as 10 crore families (i.e., some 50 crore people) will benefit from health insurance of Rs 5 lakh per year.

Like most other welfare schemes of Modi sarkar, this one is also a nudge towards the free market. Instead of putting the burden on a lumbering and wasteful state apparatus, the benefit is fully portable across the country and can be availed at any empanelled public/private hospital.

When money is attached to monopoly state providers, it puts the state in the position of power and puts the citizen at their mercy. What you get is unmotivated service providers who have no personal stake in doing a good job. Instead, the PM Jan Aarogya Yojana attaches the money to each citizen, giving him/her the choice to pick a service providing hospital. Suddenly, the incentive structure is turned on its head, with the hospitals having to compete in providing affordable health care to the citizens.

The patient is now king.

The big incentive here is for private hospitals to cut their costs so that they can serve the poor as well. Previously, private hospitals had no incentive to do so, since the poor, by definition, didn’t have money to spend. But now a poor patient has Rs 5 lakh to spend on health care per year and a private hospital can find ways to get some of that.

This is harnessing the ingenuity of the free market, this is kickstarting the virtuous cycle of capitalism to benefit all of humanity.

Finally, it was nice to hear this.

Thank you, Sir. We are all hoping to see you again at the Red Fort on Aug 15, 2019. A deep saffron turban, like today, would look best.

Fact-check: How accurate were PM Modi’s claims in his Independence Day speech?

As is his usual practice, PM Modi peppered his Independence Day speech with many data points and we fact-check his claims here.

Claim:

PM Modi said, if his government was to continue with the pace that development projects were being executed in 2013, then many of his government’s achievements would have taken decades to happen.

Fact:

Rural Electrification

Villages electrified in 2013-14: 1197

Villages electrified in 2014-18: 18,374

Thus, at the pace that UPA government was working at in 2013-14, it would have taken about 15 years to supply electricity to the number of villages NDA did in 4 years.

It is important to mention here that a ‘factchecker’ has tried to say that this claim is false.

This is disingenuous and deliberately misleading. PM Modi clearly mentioned only the pace of 2013 and not the pace between 2005 and 2013. It is clearly dishonest to impute to the PM something other than what he said and ‘factcheck’ it as false.

Toilets

Toilets constructed in 2013-14 by UPA: 49 lakh

Toilets constructed in 2014-18 by NDA: 8 crore

Thus, working at the pace set in 2013-14 – the pace which the NDA government inherited, it would have taken 16 years to construct 8 crore toilets, something that happened in 4 years instead.

LPG Connections to BPL Families

Free LPG connections given to BPL households in 2013-14 by the UPA government: 3 lakh

Free LPG connections given to BPL households in 2014-18 by the NDA: 5.21 crore

Thus, at 3 lakh connections per year which were the pace the NDA government inherited from UPA, it would have taken a whopping 170 years for LPG connections to reach 5.21 crore BPL households.

Verdict: True

Claim:

A decline in LWE – from 126 districts to 90 Districts

Fact:

There has been a 20% fall in incidents of LWE violence between 2013 and 2017, and also a 34% fall in deaths related to LWE violence across the same period.

There used to be 126 districts marked as LWE affected. Out of these 44 districts came out of this LWE affected group while 8 got added.

Hence, 90 districts in 11 States are now categorized as LWE affected, down from 126.

Verdict: True

Claim:

Construction of rural homes doubled

Fact:

Rural houses completed in 2013-14 by UPA is 10.51 lakh

Rural houses completed in 2017-18 by NDA is 44.54 lakh

The number is clearly quadruple.

Verdict: True

Claim:

Women empowerment is visible even in the Indian Cabinet.

Fact:

Modi’s Council of Ministers consists of 9 female ministers, of whom 6 hold the rank of Cabinet minister. This is the highest number of female Cabinet ministers in any Indian government in history.

Verdict: True

Claim:

Supreme Court has three women judges.

Fact:

With the induction of Justice Indira Banerjee, the SC now has three women judges. This is the highest number of women judges in the apex court ever.

Verdict: True

Claim:

13 crore MUDRA loans given to entrepreneurs and among them 4 crore are first-time entrepreneurs.

Fact:

About 13.55 crore MUDRA loans have been given and it is a fact that around 3.5 crores of them are first-time entrepreneurs. So, although it is not 4 crore as PM claimed, it is close enough at 3.5 crores.

‘Factchecker’ in trying fact-check PM Modi ends up mixing millions and crores and making a mistake on this one. It is not 3.5 million first-time entrepreneurs but 35 million.

Verdict: True

Claim:

Sale of Khadi doubled after the NDA government came in

Fact:

Sales of Khadi clocked Rs 1,081 crore in 2013-14.

In 2017-18, it was Rs. 2,503 crore according to KVIC. This is more than double the sales of 2013-14.

Verdict: True

Claim:

Double the length of highways being built

Fact:

In the UPA era, between 2010-11 and 2013-14, the length of national highways constructed was 16,505 km.

In the NDA era, between 2013-14 and 2017-18 the length of national highways constructed is 28,531 km. This is a little less than double the pace.

Verdict: True

Rahul-Kejriwal saga: What the Lutyens Media didn’t tell you

0

I bet most of you wouldn’t know it. For most of you read Indian Express, Times of India and Hindustan Times. And none of them carried the news that Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chose to abstain from voting on Rajya Sabha deputy chair on Thursday because Rahul Gandhi didn’t made a CALL to Arvind Kejriwal.

Indian Express, as usual, was the master of obfuscation. Buried deep down in their long story was one line:“AAP did a volte-face Thursday declaring it would support the Congress if Rahul Gandhi requested Arvind Kejriwal.” Indian Express never tells it readers that Rahul Gandhi never called!!! Instead, the newspaper terms it as “volte-face” on the part of AAP. Bravo.

First, the facts. AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, to all and sundry, spoke words which must have been acid to the ears of our Lutyens Media. Why did Sanjay Singh say? He said to the media an evening before on Wednesday that if Congress needed AAP’s support, its’ president Rahul Gandhi himself should make a call to Kejriwal.

But Rahul didn’t. And Sanjay wasn’t holding back his venom a day later on Thursday: “Congress is the biggest hurdle to Opposition unity. How will he (Rahul Gandhi) ensure the victory of his candidate if he cannot ask for votes?” It hurt AAP all the more that JDU chief and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar didn’t think it below his dignity to personally call up Kejriwal and seek support for NDA candidate,Harivansh Narayan Singh. “If Nitish could ask for support for his candidate, why not Rahul,” Singh said “When he (Rahul) can hug PM Modi, why can’t he ask Arvind Kejriwal to support his party’s candidate?” None of these damaging words, I can assure, you would find in these mentioned three English dailies.

Explosive, isn’t it? The news betrays a horde of staggering facts: (a) Opposition unity is going nowhere and Congress could be its biggest stumbling block; (b) Rahul Gandhi is arrogant; (c) BJP could’ve a cake-walk, come 2019 General Elections. And we are not even talking of the cascading effect it could’ve had on the forthcoming elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh in the remaining four months of 2018.

And yet it isn’t important to Lutyens Media? It writes reams and reams of columns on how BSP-SP combine would turn the tables on BJP; splashes pictures of opposition leaders holding aloft hands in Karnataka; berates HD Kumaraswamy on art of managing ally such as Congress; tears its lungs out on how Nitish and Modi are drifting apart; yet it finds Congress-AAP fall out no big deal. Strange, isn’t it? I mean Modi’s arrogance to allies is causing splits such as with TDP; but Rahul Gandhi’s nonchalance to Arvind Kejriwal is no arrogance and still good news for “mahagathbandhan”. See how dumb these newspapers think we are?

To be sure, these hacks of Lutyens Media know how to cover their tracks. So you search hard on internet, and you would find link to these stories, howsoever vague they are in description. Times of India, Hindustan Times and Indian Express do have taken note on internet. But it’s only a technical and legal defence; they have blanked it on their newsprint where their real audience is. I would be happy and ready to apologize if readers or these newspapers itself could point to any such coverage of Sanjay Singh’s reactions in their Delhi/Noida editions. I, for myself, found no such news in their newspapers.

There is a still bigger question which must trouble the sensibility of all readers. It couldn’t be the news never reached the teleprinter rooms of these newspapers. I mean the news was covered by Press Trust of India (PTI). Logically, any news desk would dread missing out on such an important story. I mean ask any journalist, he is taken to cleaners by his editor or served a show-cause notice for such a miss. But here not one, all three newspapers collectively spiked the story. It could be a coincidence; or someone takes decisions on behalf of these newspapers—your guess is as good as mine.

The pretence of “mahagathbandhan” must persist. The act of fooling paying-readers must go on. Meanwhile, you can count on Press Council of India (PCI) and Editors’ Guild to look the other way. And these guys want to “Save the Democracy” in India even while striking with hammers and axes at its fourth pillar, called Media.

Six-women crew of INSV Tarini honoured with Nav Sena Gallantry medals

0

The six-woman officers of the Indian Navy who accomplished a historic circumnavigation of the globe earlier this year have all been awarded Nao Sena medals on the eve of the Independence Day.

Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi, who led the expedition along with Lieutenant Commander Prathibha Jamwal, Lieutenant Swathi Patarpalli, Lieutenant Aishwarya Boddapati, Lieutenant S Vijaya Devi and Lieutenant Payal Gupta are being awarded the prestigious Nao Sena medal, a gallantry award that is bestowed for individual acts of exceptional devotion to duty or courage.

In a first of its kind expedition by Indian Navy, Navika Sagar Parikrama -an all-women crew was flagged off by the country’s Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman from Goa On September 10, 2017.

The brave women completed this historic journey in eight months by sailing around the world on the Indian Naval Sailing Vehicle (INSV) Tarini. The six women officers were picked from the 20 volunteers who started training in 2014. The crew has travelled for more than 21,600 nautical miles before returning to the country in May this year.

Reportedly, this is the first time that a woman military crew circumnavigated the globe without passing any canals or straits. The crew also crossed all meridians at least once in their journey and also passed the Equator twice by going around the three great capes – Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn and Cape of Good Hope.

The six women spent more than eight months out at sea, sailing around the world in six phases on the Indian Naval Sailing Vehicle (INSV) Tarini. The crew made stops in Fremantle (Australia), Lyttleton (New Zealand), Port Stanley (Falkland Islands), Cape Town (South Africa) and Mauritius.

How the propaganda against RSS falls flat on its face

0

Indian Express has two voices which do not like RSS or BJP or Hindu resurgence in India. You scroll down articles of either Christophe Jaffrelot or Ashutosh Varshney and get the drift. Jaffrelot is more scholarly and dense; Varshney more sound and less substance. Both were present in Indian Express of 11th August, dominating two separate pages.

Jaffrelot was the crudest that day than he has perhaps ever been in his long association with the Indian Express. All the veneers of scholarly nuances are out of the window. What remains is a pen-pusher who is unsure of his dwindling influence over the readers or his promoters. The crux of his agenda is that lynchings are orchestrated by the present dispensation who appear in different garbs at different times: RSS, its affiliates, BJP etc. He terms it the “deep state.” Everything that’s wrong with Modi’s India—the “cruelty” against Muslims and Dalits—is part of a larger design. In his view, India is a theocratic state in the making.

To Jaffrelot’s misfortune, Varshney has a detailed interview on page 25 with Walter Andersen who has a new book, “The RSS: A view to the inside” in the market. It completely debunks Jaffrelot’s argument that RSS and its affiliates are the “deep state” in India. Indeed, Varshney couldn’t have done a better service to RSS or BJP with this interview (a must read, I say).

Now Varshney must not have bargained for it but the Andersen interview is a validation of RSS. All Indian Express could do was to pick a comment as a headline: “A battle between Hindutva and Hinduism is coming.” I will reserve dwelling on this headline in the end: I promise the irony in it would have you doubling up in uncontrollable laughter.

The interview first establishes the credentials of Andersen: the only scholar to have observed the RSS for five decades. Then Varshney rolls out the questions which reflect his own venom:

  • What about RSS chief MS Golwalkar and his book, “We, our nationhood defined.”
  • For Savarkar, Muslims and Christians born in India were not Indians/Hindus
  • What pledge pracharaks take? Can they marry? (An answer hopefully which would nail Modi, himself was a pracharak)
  • RSS influences state and its’ policies
  • What are RSS’ views on Modi’s economics
  • RSS’ commitment to the promotion of Hindi as language
  • What is the RSS’ view on ideal Hindu women, and divorce
  • The RSS’ relationship with Muslims
  • How does RSS integrate lower caste? What are RSS’ views on Ambedkar who was anti-Hindu?

You would agree these are the questions which reflect the entire gamut on RSS; the basis of the misinformation campaign which writers of the ilk of Jaffrelot and Varshney spread with impunity. And now look at how Andersen replies to this mal-propaganda.

  • “We, our nationhood defined” I later learnt was not his (Golwalkar’s) book;
  • Savarkar, as you know, was an atheist (while you were told he was a hardcore Hindu zealot!). For MD Deoras everybody born in India was Hindu. He was against caste system and untouchability; non-Brahmans could be pracharaks;
  • They (pracharaks) take the ascetic pledge; some do marry. It is a casteless Hindu monastic order;
  • That’s inevitable since you have to deal with the government in all spheres, all activities. Government is all pervasive in India. But Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) is opposed to FDI; while Modi is all for it;
  • Demonetisation and GST directly hurts their (RSS) base. But RSS has not passed a resolution against it;
  • It can not and it does not (promote Hindi). RSS schools teach their pupils in their mother tongue; RSS could not have simultaneously sought a rise in India’s national strength and continued its strident attacks on English;
  • Wife and mother have an ideal role in society; but they also idolize Rani ki Jhansi. Both images have existed;
  • When Deoras invited Muslims to join the RSS, he did argue that Muslims were mostly India-born, and therefore Indian;

And now to the final question (RSS on lower caste and Ambedkar); its’ answer on which Indian Express has based its headline: “A battle between Hindutva and Hinduism is coming.”

Andersen explains: “There have been Dalits and OBC pracharaks, including the OBC Narendra Modi…Ambedkar is now a hero…Hindutva emphasizes one-ness of Hindus; (Hinduism is more rigid, by inference). Hence there will be a battle between Hindutva and Hinduism.”

Did you get the joke? This definition of Hindutva and Hinduism completely turns on the head what the likes of Shashi Tharoor and Digvijay Singh have been drumming in our ears. That “I-am-a-Hindu-but-have-a-distaste-for-Hindutva.” In their view, Hindutva is reactionary and violent. But as Andersen tells us, Hindutva implies inclusiveness of all!!!

That’s why I say identify these jokers. Identify the agenda they have. Identify the mistruths they spread. The “farragos” and “whatabouteries.” And save this piece as evidence when the next misinformation campaign against RSS and BJP is served inside the pages of your newspapers.

(P.S: let me imagine a scenario: “What did you do mate,” Jaffrelot to Varshney on phone, “and to my `deep state’ theory.”)

Grand Jury’s scathing comments against the Catholic Church and large scale sexual abuse in Pennsylvania

0

As per a Grand Jury Report, the Catholic Church covered up sexual abuse by more than 300 priests in Pennsylvania for decades. The report investigates child sexual abuses by the clergy of the Catholic Church going back to 1947 in six dioceses: Allentown, Erie, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Scranton.

The harrowing report begins with the ominous proclamation: “We, the members of this grand jury, need you to hear this. We know some of you have heard some of it before. There have been other reports about child sex abuse within the Catholic Church. But never on this scale. For many of us, those earlier stories happened someplace else, someplace away. Now we know the truth: It happened everywhere.”

The report goes on to state, “Most of the victims were boys, but there were girls too. Some were teens; many were prepubescent. Some were manipulated with alcohol or pornography. Some were made to masturbate their assailants or were groped by them. Some were raped orally, some vaginally, some anally. But all of them were brushed aside, in every part of the state, by church leaders who preferred to protect the abusers and their institution above all.”

The report also mentions the Church’s ‘playbook for concealing the truth’.

The ‘playbook’ involved the use of euphemisms to describe sexual assault in Church documents to relying majorly on the priests’ own self-reports to diagnose whether he was a paedophile. And above all, the Church made sure that the Police was never ever involved and treated the entire issue as an ‘in-house’ matter.

Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro called it the “largest, a most comprehensive report into child sexual abuse within the Catholic Church ever produced in the United States” at a news conference announcing the report’s release.  “We believe that the real number of children whose records were lost or who were afraid ever to come forward is in the thousands,” CNN quotes the report as saying. “Priests were raping little boys and girls, and the men of God who were responsible for them not only did nothing; they hid it all. For decades. Monsignors, auxiliary bishops, bishops, archbishops, cardinals have mostly been protected; many, including some named in this report, have been promoted.”

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, accused by the Grand Jury of protecting abusive priests when he was Pittsburgh’s bishop, has disputed the allegations. “While I understand this report may be critical of some of my actions, I believe the report confirms that I acted with diligence, with concern for the victims and to prevent future acts of abuse,” he said in a statement.

Bishop Zubik has claimed that there was no cover-up despite a great deal of evidence to the contrary. He said, “I think that it’s important to be able to state that. We have over the course of the last 30 years, for sure, been transparent about everything that has in fact been transpiring.”

“The Dioceses I’ve gotten to know so well over the past two years are incredibly sorry for the harm to these survivors,” Matt Haverstick, an attorney representing the dioceses of Harrisburg and Greensburg, said while claiming that the Church described in the report has ceased to exist. “Today’s Church has listened and learned from its mistakes, and its reforms over the past two decades keep children safe.”

The systematic abuse of children in the Catholic Church has been well known for quite a few years now. Recently, the Church was forced to pay $1 million as compensation to 8 sex abuse victims associated with the famous ‘Spotlight’ case. Chile’s efforts to crack down on the rampant paedophilia within the Catholic Church has left the entire organization red-faced. India has not been left untouched by the menace as well and there have been numerous cases of sexual abuse by members of the Church. Apart from sexual abuse, Catholic organizations have also been involved in baby-selling rackets in India.

India’s Broken Tryst

0

As we enter the 72nd year of our independence, several important questions come to mind. 71 years is not a long time in the history of a nation, and certainly not in the life of India. India has an existence that predates the constitution and many civilizations across the world. However, the last 71 years certainly mark the existence of an India in the independent, free world and 7 decades is a span that deserves evaluation.

So how do we assess this journey? On the midnight of 14th August, standing in the central hall of Indian parliament, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said India had a tryst with destiny. Every free citizen who heard him that night, every individual who saw him that night had a vision and hope of a new India, an India of his dreams, an India which will ensure that his all dreams are fulfilled, and will give him a life of respect and dignity. An India which will respect it’s heritage with her eyes on the future, which will fondly keep memories of its patriot in its heart while creating a great future for its youth. An India that will carry within itself every hope, dream and ambition of the citizen. An India, which will learn from the past while carving out the future.

Now when we look back, we notice that a majority part of the last 71 years has witnessed a big loss. Loss of history, culture, heritage and ethos. Our constitution makers were visionary people, they were men of wisdom and intellect. They envisioned an India where despite all diversities, everyone will live together, where everyone will be free to speak. But starting with the first amendment, Pandit Nehru attacked the very basis of the Indian constitution which was followed by many more creating a series of attack on free speech.

Then came his daughter and the horrific days of emergency when political opponents were jailed and tortured for the atrocious crime of not believing in the principle of synonymity of India and Indira. Another one from the family came and overturned a judgement which gave equal rights to women with a brute majority while the last heirs of the crown brought a Section 66A in the Information Technology Act to silence citizens who took to social media, sometimes, to display dissent towards the dynasty. A strong legacy you see!

Our constitution makers envisaged an India proud of its ethos. Hence they put a picture of Raja Ramchandra on the initial pages of the constitution. And in the very initial years of independence, same Raja Ramchandra was locked inside his home by the government where he remained for a long 36 years when an amateur Prime Minister was compelled to open them under public pressure.

In 1966, innocent people and sadhus were killed in open fire by police on orders of the Central government for committing a big crime – demanding a ban on cow slaughter, something which the great makers of constitution mentioned as the Directive Principles of State Policy.

Later, an amateur Prime Minister made it part of state policy to rather promote cow slaughter and bring a ‘Pink Revolution’. India also saw a government hell-bent on destroying its cultural heritage, the Rama Setu, under pressure of its ally. Hail the Supreme Court that it ensured that the bridge wasn’t touched.

History is indeed one of the most important parts of a nation’s journey. So how long do you think Indian history is? If you read Indian textbooks, history of India started once Babur came in and flourished followed by Akbar, the king of a leftist’s heart.

Ashoka who had a kingdom covering entire India, Shivaji Maharaj whose clan once ruled almost the whole India, RajaRaja Chola who was the architect of world’s first navy, Prithviraj who fought Ghori with blinded eyes, Chalukyas, Pallavas, Chhatrasal and many more got covered in single paragraphs.

Fake heroes were imposed upon us. So a Shershah Suri is hailed for building a road from Kolkata to Kabul, (though he was king for a period of only 7 years) but a Vivekananda who raised the flag of Indian culture globally just gets a mention in one tiny corner!

Indians were made to believe that invaders arrived, looted, ruled and went away, while our ancestors meekly surrendered every time. No one taught the story of the Great Indian resistance. No one told why India still has about 80% of Hindu population while every other country where Islamist invasion happened, converted to Islam within years. What kept us alive? What was that one thing which kept us together, which didn’t let us lose our values and ethos?

Finally, in the past few years, the smokescreen which was built over years has started to clear. Indians are seeing through the window. Thanks to the almighty internet, the young generation is seeing what it deserves. But there is strong resistance. Even now the same set of people who kept us away from the reality for years are trying to hide facts. And now realising that they are failing, they have resorted to agenda peddling in a new way.

Random incidents are seen as a pattern and the whole nation is defamed for that. The ‘intolerance’ agenda brigade is out to ensure that the young generation stops questioning them and doesn’t search for the truth. But it looks difficult for them now. India is rising and it will not stop.

We have missed so many chances. But not any more. India is now certainly ‘waking to life & freedom’ and as the great Swami Vivekananda said, shall not sleep until the goal is achieved.

Maa Durga’s homecoming: American museum all set to return 2 idols found to be of Indian origin

United States of America’s Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) is all set to return two ancient murthis to India, which were donated to it and found to be of Indian origin after research done by its staff.

According to a press release issued by the museum, an eighth-century stone sculpture of Hindu Goddess Durga Mahishasuramardini which was donated to it in 2015 and a third-century limestone murthi, which is the head of a male deity which was a donation to the museum in 1986 will be returned to the Indian government.

“In the course of research, the museum staff recognized it from the 1969 publication ‘The Archaeology of Kumann’ by K P Nautiyal, in which the Durga was described as being housed in the Chakravarteswara Temple at Baijnath, a medieval capital in Uttarakhand, in northern India,” the release said. It was further concluded that the sculpture of the head of a male deity was part of the excavated inventory of the Nagarjunakonda Site Museum.

Soon after the Museum contacted the Archaeological Survey of India, and The MET and India signed an agreement for its return in April 2018.

The Consulate General of India responding to this exemplary gesture extended by the US said, “We deeply appreciate the sincere efforts and collaboration of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in this return of Indian antiquities to India. We will continue to work closely with the Museum and other US authorities and institutions to identify Indian archaeological art that belongs in India.”

“The museum is committed to the responsible acquisition of archaeological art and applies rigorous provenance standards to its collections. The return of these objects to India is warranted, and the museum is grateful for our long-standing, collaborative relationships with colleagues and scholarly institutions in India,” read a statement by the museum.

For decades now, various foreign countries have been a warehouse to Indian artefacts. In fact, antiquities theft has long been a menace that Indian governments have been continuously grappling with. Prime Minister Modi is the first Indian head of government to demand stolen Indian heritage from the U.S, Canada, Germany, and other countries. The USA handed over 200 ancient artefacts to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the States.

In June 2018, the government of Tamil Nadu has initiated talks with the National Gallery of Australia to recover several crores worth seven ancient temple idols stolen from the state and displayed in the Canberra-based museum.

Two years ago, Australia had returned three artefacts, including an idol of goddess Pratyangira, stolen from a Shiva temple in Cuddalore district in Tamil Nadu. In 2014, then Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott had returned two statues of Nataraja and Ardhanariswarar stolen from temples in the state.

Recently the British Museum on Twitter uploaded an image of an Indian sandstone sculpture displayed in their Museum which attracted a lot of resentment from Indians demanding it to be returned back as it is part of Indian heritage.

For decades people of India have seemed to remain unaware and complacent about their national treasures being brandished at various places abroad, but not anymore. Lately, Indians are being strident in their opinions and demanding it to be returned back.

All-female SWAT unit guarded Red Fort as Prime Minister delivered the Independence Day speech

Today as the nation listened attentively to the Prime Minister’s address, there was a small yet very significant change happening inside the premises of the Red Fort. It was the first time in independent India that an ‘all female’ SWAT team was part of the security apparatus protecting the venue.

The team comprising of thirty-six (36) women went through more than a year of harsh training. The training module included but not limited to weapons handling, counter-terrorism and Krav maga for fifteen months.

This SWAT team is representative of the new India, which is inclusive and serves as an indicator of the changing mindset within the country. Special operation forces in the police or the armed forces have always been male-dominated and not only in India but throughout the world. The all-female SWAT team was inducted into the Delhi police by Home Minister Mr Rajnath Singh on last Friday.

The 36 women constables are all from north-eastern states. They will shield the city from harm by serving alongside five other male commando units of the Delhi police. Today, this unit was deployed at the red fort area. The women donned blue uniforms and guns as they protected the outer perimeter of Red Fort.

Pramod Kushwala, a senior Delhi police official while speaking to Thomson Reuters Foundation about the importance of such initiative and induction of this team into the police force stated:

“These women have broken into a male bastion”.

He further added that this team will prove to be an anti-thesis to the various arguments put forth by people about women not being suitable enough for certain kinds of jobs. Kushwala said that there is a misconception about women’s capabilities in certain roles but this team is at par with other male commandos and in certain cases, these women are better.

This SWAT team will be posted in different locations of South and Central Delhi and also will be a part of the security in the high alert zone in the capital. The induction of this all-female swat team comes days after an all-female navy crew onboard INVS Tarini travelled across the globe in a short period of eight months. INVS Tarini travelled across the Equator twice.
