St Stephen’s admin says they didn’t say slogans on chapel, Police too calls it ‘rumours’

St Stephen’s College’s admin has reportedly denied the alleged vandalization in college campus even as Delhi Police dismissed the charges as ‘rumours’. As per reports, a cross outside the chapel, on the grave of college founder Samuel Scott Allnut and the door were ‘vandalized’ by ‘Om’ and ‘Mandir Yahi Banayenge’. Apparently, student union president Sai Aashirwad spotted the writing on Friday.

However, as per Indian Express, college bursar Renish Abraham, who is officiating in absence of the principal, denied such an incident. He said that he did not see anything written on the chapel door and even denied reports that the college had filed a complaint in this regard.

Report in Dainik Jagran say a different picture.

The report says that sources said they saw a college employee go towards the chapel with their dog, camera and spray paints. There have been earlier reports that a lot of teachers have been protesting against the proposal of making St Stephen’s College an autonomous body. The sources have reportedly said that the alleged vandalization was carried out by college employee.

The church has been plagued with cases of sexual abuse, and it’s time the ‘omerta’ is broken

The 2015 movie ‘Spotlight’ had a profound, lasting impact worldwide, not only because it was a finely made motion picture that spoke about the long-standing issue of child sexual abuse by the church, but also for the manner in which it highlighted the fact that the church and the whole organisational system of Christian authorities go to elaborate lengths to deny, hide, hush up the crimes and take great measures to shelter and rehabilitate the guilty priests. In one powerful scene, Mitchell Garabedian tells the journalist Michael Rezendes, “If it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to abuse one.” He was, of course, referring to the deeply rooted system of the clergy, lawyers and private patrons including government officials who go to great lengths to cover up the crimes and help the guilty go unpunished.

India, sadly, has not been immune to the plague either. Christian priests and churches, like most cases worldwide, have been targeting the poor, destitute for their crimes and the cases go unnoticed. At most, a case grabs a little spot in newspapers for a day or two and then is lost in obscurity. It is mostly due to the speed and reachability of digital and social media that nowadays, more and more cases are coming to highlight. Even if there are many, many cases, none of them get the media attention or outrage. The sordid tale was also documented by one Varun Reddy on Twitter.

Recently in Vallampadu, Andhra Pradesh, a 45-year-old pastor was booked for brutally raping an 11-year old girl. In July 2017, Father Saji Joesph, a priest who was the director of a children’s home in Kerala’s Wayanad district, was arrested after allegations of sexually abusing minor boys. In 2013, an illegal shelter home housing dozens of children from extremely poor families in North Eastern India was reported in Jaipur. One girl had accused priest Jacob John of rape and as many as 13 girls were suspected to have been sexually abused by the priest. The children were all found to be living in cramped rooms amongst rotten vegetables in an utterly unhygienic environment. In 2011, a heartbreaking case had come to light in Guntur when a local church priest had set a minor girl on fire after sexually abusing her for over a year. The girl succumbed to her injuries after suffering 90% burns. In 2010, a priest named Habib Joesph was arrested for alleged sexual abuse of a minor. The sister of the minor girl had died in the same institution a year earlier. The girl alleged that she and her sister were both being sexually abused regularly and this was known to the nuns in charge of the girl. The girl’s elder sister had died allegedly after being raped by the priest and beaten by the nun. Habib Joseph was granted bail within a day.

Though there are dozens of cases of child sexual abuse by church priests, the crimes are not limited to it. There are endless stories of exploitation, emotional abuse, illegal trafficking, land grabbing, and mysterious deaths surrounding churches. In a rather shocking incident in Hyderabad in 2016, a pastor was arrested for forcing the children under his care to beg on the streets. Rape and exploitation of adult women is another frequent trait too.

Very few cases actually see a conviction. Before POCSO Act came into effect, getting bail and being charged under easily bailable offences was rather frequent. The acts often went unreported and severely underreported because of one principal reason. The victims are almost always poor, destitute children coming from families who barely make ends meet. For a family struggling with poverty, an institution that provides free shelter and education comes as a blessing (pun intended) and they are often swayed by the influential tactics and pious image of the priests.

Nothing can be a better example of the inactivity of law and the disregard shown by the church authorities than the sordid tale of Paul Henry Dean, a fugitive from Australia who came to India and started working as Brother Alan and sometimes as Father Paul. Not only did Paul managed to sexually abuse countless deaf, dumb and mentally challenged boys for decades in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, he was protected and facilitated with impunity by his employers. Such was the extent of the church’s protection that Paul was allowed to perform cataract surgeries and limb amputations in health camps posing as a doctor. Whenever Paul was nabbed, he managed to get bail immediately, only to go to a different institution run by missionaries and continue his dastardly acts. The saddest part of the story was as almost all of his victims were disabled and from severely poor families, they never had a chance to take a stand against him.

Paul’s case is not even the only one of a failed justice system. A pastor named Rev Jonathan Robinson, who was accused of sexually abusing a boy in 2011 repeatedly, happily returned to the UK after committing the crime and after returning to India to face trials as per the government’s request, fled the country soon after being convicted and granted a bail. Robinson was considered a friend of the former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.

The examples given here are only a few cases of the hundreds of cases that exist. Before POCSO Act came into existence, many offenders easily cheated the system and remained free. Even after the new laws and increasing public awareness, there can be no denial that there exists very low admittance and self-correction in case of Christian institutions. Often it is seen that it is the church which gets actively involved in covering up and ignoring the crimes. The institutions, which are usually so vocal when it comes to issuing political directions are often seen shielding the guilty and wielding their power to subvert the law. This approach needs to be broken and it will be broken when the crimes get equal attention, media coverage and subsequent public outrage like the others. When there is enough push from the society to bring every criminal to justice with equal urgency, the network of protectionism will collapse eventually.

Crimes are not specific to religion. The sick trait of criminality and abuse does not discriminate between people. But it is the institutionalised protection, lack of a strong justice system and failure of society’s own safeguards like the media that help and abet a crime to flourish. One rape covered up instigates another rapist to take a chance. When media incessantly focuses crimes however distantly related to one religion and ignores those committed by the other, it emboldens the criminals to continue their behaviour. When we claim law and system to be secular, we need to make our perspectives of looking at a crime secular too.

Update: Priest Savi Avangattu mentioned in this report was later acquitted of all charges due to lack of evidence. The minor who accused him turned hostile in the court and took back all the charges, which the prosecution observed could have been due to out of court settlement. The Priest told OpIndia that he didn’t press any defamation charges against the party that accused him as ‘it is ingrained in his mind and his spirit to forgive those who have harmed him or sinned against him’.

Shashi Tharoor shares fake news from an Islamist website to attack Modi government

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, who was earlier spotted spreading fake news of Internet sites being blocked to attack Modi government, yesterday shared another fake news from an Islamist website.

The link Tharoor had shared stated that former RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan, who is ‘unrecognised by his own country’ has been appointed as Governor of Bank of England (BOE). However, the news story is now deleted by the Islamist website. According to a report published by Bloomberg on 3rd May, Rajan did not appear in the list of contenders. In fact, reports even suggest that Rajan refuted the rumours of him being elected the BOE Governor.

Earlier, too, the Islamist website had written fake news, which was spread by Congress supporter troll, who was also followed by AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal. The report stated fake news which showed BJP government in bad light as 4th most corrupt government.

In both the cases, after being called out on social media, the website, Siasat.com deleted the news item on both the instances. While Tharoor has clarified in subsequent tweet that it was fake news, he has still not deleted the original tweet.

One rupee clinic in Thane railway station helps a 22 year old women deliver a baby on the platform

According to reports, a 22-year-old woman delivered a baby with the assistance of a doctor and a nurse of one rupee clinic on a platform in Thane railway station.

In an exemplary initiative taken last year, Central Railway along with ‘Magicdil’ have established 24X7 ‘One Rupee Clinics’ at 14 different stations. This initiative was taken to help its commuters in case of medical emergency. These clinics provide basic treatment to commuters at a very subsidised rate.

One Rupee Clinics at Mumbai railway stations

A PIL was filed in Bombay HC in March last year by rail activist Samir Zaveri on the issue of lack of prompt medical help in case of accidents on railway tracks, the Bombay High Court ordered the Railways to set up Electronic Medical Records(EMRs) at all stations on the Central and Western Line in a phased manner. Since then the one rupee clinic has helped various people and provided emergency services to the commuters in distress.

In October, last month, a 26-year-old Salma Shaikh, delivered a baby girl at Mumbai’s Dadar station, one rupee clinic made it possible by boarding the train to help the lady. In fact, the daily travellers consider these clinics to be a boon as it can provide immediate treatment in case of an emergency.

These clinics are open 24 hours a day, have three doctors working in eight-hour shifts. “Earlier, in case of an accident or injuries, we had to take the patient to a hospital, which was time-consuming and could impact the patient’s life. But this clinic provides immediate help to passengers. We are able to offer aid within the Golden hour itself, without wasting precious time,” said Dr Aparna Deodhar, deputy station manager, Thane.

Muslim lawyer accused of hosting religious conversion ceremony where anti-Hindu comments were made

A Varanasi lawyer named Shahnawaz Khan has been accused of hosting a religious conversion ceremony in his office chamber, as reported by Dainik Jagran.

As per the report, Khan had planned a conversion ceremony of a Hindu girl on Thursday evening, which was to be followed by her wedding, for which a Muslim cleric too was invited. The report also claimed that offensive statements against the Hindu religion were made, while the said conversion ceremony was on.

Around that time, other lawyers like Upendra Narayan Singh came to know about the ongoing religious conversion, following which they barged into Khan’s office and started protesting. Owing to the heavy protest, the conversion remained incomplete and participants including the Muslim cleric fled the area. Following this people led by Nityanand Rai, the former General Secretary of the Banaras Bar managed to calm the situation.

As a result of this episode, Upendra Narayan Singh, Anurag Pandey and other lawyers wrote a letter asking the central bar to take action against those who tried to convert the girl to Islam. They have also accused Khan of hurting religious sentiments and demanded that his registration be cancelled.

A report in Navbharat Times claimed that, protests continued in the court premises on Friday, following which an emergency meeting was called. This as per the report was the first time religious conversion took place inside the court premises. It though isn’t clear whether the Hindu girl had voluntarily decided to change her religion or had she been forced instead.

With regards to the incident, lawyers have demanded that CCTV footage be used to identify the facilitators of the religious conversion ceremony, so that strict action could be taken against them.

As per an Amar Ujala report, a joint meeting would be convened between the Central and Banaras bar on Saturday, where decisions over further action would be taken. The report also claims that the religious conversion ceremony took place at about 6:30 PM where three lawyers and two women too were present.

Consistent with BJP’s dalit outreach, police in Mahidpur to provide security to marriage processions of Dalits

Consistent with the BJP’s outreach towards Dalits, authorities in Mahidpur tehsil of Ujjain have issued a circular to sarpanches and panchayat secretaries asking to be informed 3 days in advance if there is a wedding in Dalit family in the villages under their jurisdiction. It is said to be a precautionary measure in light of incidents where people from upper caste have objected to marriage processions of Dalits which have led to conflicts. The circular would also apply to marriages among STs and OBCs.

“It’s a precautionary measure. We want to avoid any untoward incident. After a case of atrocity is reported, it’s difficult to get evidence because the accused deny everything and come up with a different explanation. It becomes difficult to probe such cases. It’s better that police remain present during marriage processions,’’ SDM Gome told The Indian Express. SDM Gome asserted that no one had complained about the circular. He also said that police presence would discourage child marriages as it would act as a deterrent.

The order comes days after stones were allegedly pelted at a marriage procession of a Dalit youth in Mahidpur tehsil by members of the upper caste for riding a horse against the wishes of the attackers. 17 men have been arrested in connection with the incident so far.

BJP, which has its government in Madhya Pradesh, has been consistent with its outreach to Dalits. During Narendra Modi’s campaign in Karnataka, he accused the Congress of being anti-Dalit and their nomination of a Dalit, President Kovind, for the post of President. The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh too has been reaching out to Dalits to ensure Hindu unity and has come up with an action plan to achieve its objective.

A ground report from the Modi rally in Tumakuru, Karnataka

0

The practice of commenting on politics from a desk based on conjectures and politically motivated intentions is totally different from experiencing the mood of people in a political rally. The MG stadium of Tumakuru was a testament to the emphatic support and popularity that Modi enjoys in the country even today. The crowd consisted of youth, kids and elderly eager to catch a glimpse of their Prime Minister and hear his speech. Having attended a Modi rally in Karnataka during his 2014 campaign, I can surely make this comment. The enthusiasm and energy of a Modi rally have not died down in any way.

While waiting for the man of the moment, I overheard someone talking about the progress under Modi Sarkar. The person said that Modi is doing important activities one after the other and everything that he dreams of can’t be achieved in a single term. He has to be given 2 to 3 terms to implement his agenda.

This is in stark contrast to typical political commentators or Modi opponent who harps on 2 crore jobs or smart cities or other promises, which in their opinion has not been implemented. This reason is touted to be a key factor that will decide 2019. However, that is not the case among common people. They have seen self-centred politicians who have enriched themselves with political office. Modi comes across as a fresh breath of air in comparison to other politicians.

Hindi is no barrier at all for Modi’s popularity in Karnataka. Sure, a significant number of people may not understand the language, but they do understand the message. symbolism, sacrifice, honesty and hard worker that Narendra Modi is. One person among the crowd pointed out that the local MP had built a house and a factory for himself but this man (Modi) has left his family and home for the country. This makes for a very powerful story in the eyes of the voter.

With the assistance of a translator, Modi ensured that 100% of his speech was understood by the public. More than half of the speech was dedicated to local issues by the PM. Irrigation for coconut farms, drinking water woes and corruption under Siddaramaiah were the top issues that dominated the speech of the PM. Modi squarely questioned the Congress as to why they had not attended to the problem of indebtedness among farmers during their 5 decade-long rule in the country. He added that Congress has been seeking votes in the name of poor all these days, but it is unlikely to work in future. Modi added a sarcastic remark on Rahul Gandhi’s potato-gold scheme in the midst of his speech.

Another important issue dealt by the PM was related to the role of Janata Dal (S) in the state’s politics. He pointed out the Congress had been administering municipal corporation BBMP (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) in Bangalore in coalition with the JDS. In the face of this fact, how can Congress run away from the fact that they have an understanding with the party in Karnataka, the PM questioned? This was a key message that Modi drove home to the audience as media has been trying to insinuate a hypothetical understanding between BJP and JDS in the assembly election.

The rally was well attended by people from neighbouring constituencies as well. A jam-packed stadium shouting ‘Modi  Modi Modi’ in unison was an ominous message to the NDTV jamaat which attended the rally this morning. If the momentum of the Modi rallies are carried over till the polling booth, there is no doubt that a BJP government with a full majority will become a reality on the 15th of May.

NIA reveals larger conspiracy in RSS leader Ravinder Gosain’s murder, files chargesheet

NIA’s 1000 page chargesheet in the murder of RSS leader Ravinder Gosain shows that the conspiracy had links in several countries including Pakistan, UK, Australia, France, Italy and the UAE. He was shot dead in Ludhiana on October 17 last year near his house. There already are reports of Pakistan’s ISI training youth and Hafiz Saeed courting Khalistanis during processions in Pakistan.

The chargesheet says that the 15 persons accused “used to get their execution plans from Pakistan and several other countries over various social networking sites”. The NIA further adds that the transnational conspiracy was planned by Khalistan Liberation Force and eight incidents were executed as part of it from January 2016 and October 2017 in Punjab. All the targets belonged to specific communities and organizations. The objective of the conspiracy was to destabilize law and order and resurrect the terrorism in the state. The accused got entire planning and training on escaping CCTV cameras and execution of the crime from their handlers via Skype and Signal, a messaging app similar to Whatsapp.

The agency has mentioned a list of 172 witnesses including 28 ‘protected’ whose identity will not be revealed to anyone. This is the first time the NIA has used the term “protected witnesses”. Name of one accused who had died in Patiala jail on April 18 has been removed and an application for discharge of Taljeet Singh alias Jimmy has also been move as no substantial evidence has been found against him.

The witnesses include bankers, forex officials through which money was routed from foreign countries into the accounts of local contacts. It has been mentioned that large amounts of funds for the purchase of weapons and logistics had been moved from countries such as Italy, Australia and the UK to the killers. The evidence has been collected from oral, documentary, material, electronic sources and from several countries.

Earlier Home Minister Rajnath Singh had taken up the issue with Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh. The Home ministry ordered the case be handed over from Punjab police to NIA following which the agency registered the case. We had also reported about Pakistan’s ISI training youth and Hafiz Saeed courting Khalistanis during processions in Pakistan.

Yogi Adityanath accuses Congress of supporting Jihadis, speaks of ancient relationship between UP and Karnataka

During his rally in Karnataka ahead of the Assembly Elections, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath launched a scathing attack on the Congress and the Siddaramaiah government. He accused the Congress of protecting and encouraging Jihadi elements and playing divisive politics.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ng9dWLbbGjc]

In his speech, Yogi Adityanath emphasized on Gauraksha and condemned the ministers in the Karnataka cabinet for encouraging the consumption of beef. He suggested that Gauraksha is the soul of this nation and that Congress has given up on both Gauraksha and Rashtraraksha. Yogi Adityanath cited the murders of numerous Hindu activists to accuse the Siddaramaiah government of making Karnataka a breeding ground of Jihadi forces.

We had reported earlier on the withdrawal of its candidates by SDPI, the political arm of PFI, a radical Islamist outfit, to help the Congress in the upcoming Assembly elections. The Congress government in Karnataka had come under scrutiny when it decided to drop 175 cases against the PFI. SDPI activists were arrested recently in Kannur in connection with the murder of an ABVP worker. The NIA also suspects members of the PFI to have links with alleged cases of ‘Love Jihad’.

In an effort to thwart the politics of North-South divide, Yogi Adityanath elaborated on the sacred threads that bind the country together. He spoke of the deep connection between his sect and the state of Karnataka. Yogi Adityanath remarked that Gorakhnath who is worshipped by the followers of his sect in Uttar Pradesh is worshipped as Manjunath in Karnataka. He stated how Shri Rama found his most loyal devotee, Hanuman, in the land of Karnataka. He also said Bhairaveshwara who is worshipped in Karnataka is the same Kal Bhairav who is worshipped in Kashi, Uttar Pradesh. Yogi Adityanath suggested if the Congress could understand these things that bind us together, then the country wouldn’t have undergone partition.

The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh also accused the Congress government in Karnataka of rampant corruption and suggested that they were using the state as an ATM. “Today the Siddaramaiah government is using Karnataka as its automated teller machine. Thus, I have come here to tell you that Congress-free Karnataka is the need of the hour,” said Yogi Adityanath.

Yogi Adityanath also took a dig at Siddaramaiah over farmer suicide rates. “This government does not seem to be standing in favour of farmers, traders, citizens and BJP workers and does not seem to be doing justice to them. The government is encouraging anarchy,” said the UP Chief Minister.
