Rahul Gandhi dodges a question on Karnataka government’s caste based discrimination of students

0

Congress president’s inability to answer questions have steadily eroded whatever little credibility he had as a prime ministerial candidate in the recent past. Rahul Gandhi’s casual answer on benefits he would offer to those who passed NCC ‘C’ certificate had invited many comments and criticism earlier in the day. The interaction between Congress president and students was organised in Maharani College of Arts, Mysuru.

However, another question thrown by a student seems to have stumped the Congress president completely. This time around, the Congress president chose not to answer and allowed the Chief Minister to answer as to why the government was discriminating against students based on their caste identities.

Full video of the interaction between the student, Rahul Gandhi and Siddaramaiah can be seen below.

The translation of the interaction is below :

Student: Since you and CM are here, I would like to ask you some questions

Moderators: Ask in English

Rahul Gandhi: No you can ask in Kannada. I will get it translated. [calls G Parameshwara, state Congress president]

Student: While giving benefits (scholarships/laptops) to students why is the government discriminating us based on communities?

Rahul Gandhi (asking G Parameshwara): Who is discriminating?

G Parameshwara: Government.

Rahul Gandhi: Is it a national question or a Karnataka question ?

Student: Karnataka

Rahul Gandhi: Well it is a Karnataka, you ask the Karnataka Chief Minister here.

Student (repeats question): While giving benefits (scholarships / laptops) to students why is the government discriminating us based on communities? Are we not the same (in government’s eyes)?

Siddaramaiah [answering the question]: You are all students who are studying BA, B.Sc. MBA. There are many inequalities in society. There is poverty and gender discrimination in society. These differences are not created by us. It has happened because of historical events. What should we do to eliminate differences? In a house, if there is a capable and weak kid what should be done? We should give extra care to the weaker kid. Thus some extra attention must given some kids who are weak and have been denied opportunies. They have to be brought to the mainstream. Only then we can create an equal society. Otherwise, the disparity will continue in society.

[The student was not convinced and asked another question]

Student: What about laptops?

Siddaramaiah: We are distributing laptops to all students irrespective of caste, irrespective of religion to those who have passed PUC.

[Students shout back ‘NO, the video ends]

This only shows that the discontent with Siddaramaiah’s divide and rule policy is rising among youth and Rahul Gandhi is totally incapable of taking any serious question.

Preferential treatment to minorities is fostering a sense of disenchantment with ‘secularism’ among Hindus, it is time to stop

0

Senior Counsel Rajiv Dhawan, arguing in favour of Babri Masjid at Ram Janambhoomi, made an argument that reveals the institutionalized minority appeasement in the country. He said (reported by Bar and Bench), “Parents give more attention to a weak child so as to enable him/her to be stronger. Same is the case with preferential treatment to minorities.” The intriguing thing about the argument is that Mr Dhawan is not merely asserting that minorities in the country have rights guaranteed to them by the Constitution that Hindus don’t but that such is how it should be. The preferential treatment accorded to minority communities is in direct violation of the equality between religions that the Constitution claims to profess.

The said comments made in the Court during an argument in favour of Babri Masjid is particularly revealing. The advocate attempts to divert attention from the facts of the case and makes an appeal to sentimentality to influence the esteemed Judges of the Court to rule in favour of the Masjid. The argument is no longer based on hard facts, it is basically reduced to, “The minorities must be protected! They are weak!” Rajiv Dhawan must be reminded that the minorities do not perceive themselves as weak, Akbaruddin Owaisi might take offence at that suggestion considering the pretence of bravado he had displayed at one particular gathering years ago. Apart from Owaisi, there are regular instances of clerics issuing threats to the central government. Who exactly is Mr Dhawan trying to fool with his patronizing remarks?

The burden of communal harmony is always strapped on the back of the majority community. It is revealed most clearly in the mindset of Nehru who asserted that majority communalism is more dangerous than minority communalism. It is a historical fact that scores of Hindu Temples were demolished by the Islamic invaders. Since we gave up our claims to significant portions of our ancient lands and made peace with the partition of our nation, the least that Muslims in India could do is return the sites of our most treasured Temples to us as a goodwill gesture and efforts towards rebuilding the faith between the two communities. Instead, due to the misguided policies of Nehru, the radicalism within the minority community was allowed to fester and run rampant and the fissures between the two communities never really healed. Ram Janambhoomi should have been returned to Hindus right after partition as a gesture of reparation for the partition of the country and the numerous Temples that have been destroyed over the centuries. But instead, the wound was allowed to fester and that led to the violent demolition of the Masjid in 1992.

Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister, went to the extent of asserting that Muslims must have the first right over resources in this country. Consider for a moment how a Hindu, who still has memories from the partition or has heard of the brutal atrocities perpetrated against Hindus during the period from his parents or grandparents, ought to feel regarding the statement. According to him, Hindus have paid disproportionately already as a consequence of the conflict, how much more is to be expected of them? The feeling of disenchantment with the notion of secularism in the country will only grow if secular parties continue to hold such opinions and it does not help in sustaining an environment of communal harmony at all.

Minorities in this country do enjoy special privileges and preferential treatment. A true secularist will abhor such disparity between citizens on the basis of their religion and yet, secularists in India advocate that it is the ideal state of affairs and those who demand equal rights for every citizen regardless of their religion are branded communal. Minorities in the country enjoy the right to manage their own religious institutions without the interference of the State. Hindus, on the other hand, have their Temples taken away from their control by the Secular state where bureaucrats often loot the treasuries of the Temple, illegal encroachment of Temple lands is rampant and even non-Hindus are made appointees in the management of the Temple affairs. In matters of education as well, minorities are granted exemption from the RTE while Hindu-run schools have to compulsorily adhere to the law making them unable to compete effectively in the brimming private education sector.

The fissure between the two communities is becoming increasingly apparent and unlike what liberals would want us to believe, it is the institutionalized minority appeasement in the country guaranteed by the very Constitution that is to be blamed, aided by the secessionist and fundamentalist sections of the minority community. There is no reason why governments should continue with minority-specific scholarships or other such minority only benefits. The disgruntlement within the majority community will only continue to grow if such endeavours are not brought to a halt. A lasting preferential treatment to the minority community in question was already provided decades ago in the form of a separate country. In the interest of equity and communal harmony, such preferential treatment should be immediately done away with and reparations made to the majority community to foster a bond of communal harmony.

Female ISIS recruiter in Kerala sentenced to 7 years in jail by NIA court

0

The National Investigation Agency court in Kochi, Kerala has sentenced ISIS recruiter Yasmeen Mohammad Zahid to seven years rigorous imprisonment for her involvement with recruiting people for the ISIS. Yasmeen had reportedly recruited people for ISIS from Kerala’s Kasargod district.

Justice Santhosh Kumar announced the verdict sentencing Yasmeen to 7 years of RI and a fine of Rs 25,000. She was charged under sections 120B and 125 of IPC and sections 38, 39 and 40 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

This was the first ISIS related case filed by the Kerala Police. The NIA had later taken up the case for investigation. Yasmeen was arrested at Delhi Airport in 2016 while trying to board a flight to Afganistan. The 30-year-old woman’s friend Abdul Rashid, a former engineer, is believed to be the mastermind behind the recruitment of people into ISIS.

Kerala Police had earlier stated that about 100 people from Kerala are believed to have joined the ISIS. When Yasmeen was arrested in 2016, she reportedly had admitted to the police that she and Abdul Rashid had managed to indoctrinate 40 people. The suspected people used to attend ‘jihadi classes’ in Kasargod district. Rashid is now believed to be operating in Afganistan. He was behind the disappearance of 21 people from Kerala.

The Special Investigation Team had traced the remaining 19 people who attended the indoctrination classes and have been keeping them on a watch list. Yasmeen was supposed to join Rashid in Afganistan along with the missing 21, but her travel plans were delayed and she was arrested.

The NIA charge sheet on Yasmeen which also charges Rashid as an accused stated that Rashid used to raise funds for ISIS activities and transfer them to Yasmeen. The conspiracy to indoctrinate people and send them to ISIS-controlled territories has been undergoing since 2015, the charge sheet also included. The indoctrination classes were conducted to urge people to undertake violent jihad.

CBI files case against Deccan Chronicle for defrauding public Insurance company of crores of rupees

0

Officials revealed on Friday that the CBI filed a case of cheating and criminal conspiracy against Deccan Chronicle Holdings Ltd (DCHL) and its chairman T Venkatram Reddy, for allegedly defrauding United India Insurance Company Limited (UIIC) of Rs 30.5 crores.

The FIR dated 22nd March which was registered by the CBI, has further named former Chennai deputy general manager (investment department) of UIIC – A Balasubramanian, KL Kunjilwar – the erstwhile chief manager (investment department) of UIIC, Infrastructure Development Finance Company Limited (IDFC) and rating agency CARE as accused.

The CBI has accused the two aforementioned UIIC officials of making suspicions investments in “short-term unsecured redeemable non-convertible debentures” which were issued by DCHL in 2011 by violating regulations. Debentures are basically a loan certificate issued by a company which is not secured by a collateral. When it comes to “non-convertible debentures”, they cannot be exchanged for any form of equity in the company.

The CBI’s FIR has alleged that the UIIC officials misused their position to make investments in debentures issued by DCHL which weren’t repaid by the latter causing a loss of Rs 30.5 crores. The debentures had a maturing period of 364 days. It has been alleged that these debentures were solely arranged by IDFC limited.

The criminal conspiracy ranged from July – October 2011, when three Rs 10 crores debentures of DCHL were put up for investing by KL Kunjilwar at 11.25% interest. These were supposedly approved by A Balasubramanian and it has been alleged that UIIC didn’t do any separate risk analysis of its own before making the investment.

UIIC merely relied on the credit rating issued by CARE which was drastically downgraded within a year. It has also been alleged that UIIC officials made the investment in three batches in order to escape the scrutiny of their investment committee.

One of the other allegations is that DCHL issued three cheques of Rs 10 crore each which was dishonoured.

This trouble for Deccan Chronicle comes just a day after it was reported that NDTV had suffered a blow of its own after the Commissioner of Income Tax rejected its application for stay on tax demand. The Commissioner also instructed that the media group pay Rs. 131.04 crores, partly by way of adjustment of refund of Rs. 23 crores and partly in 3 instalments payable on 15th April, 15th May and 15th June 2018 of Rs. 36 crores, 36 crores and Rs. 36.04 crores respectively.

Dear Rahul Gandhi, how long do you plan to mislead people about Veer Savarkar by calling him a ‘traitor’

People have disparaged the credibility behind Veer Savarkar’s life, by constantly branding him as a “loyal colonialist”. But these are the same people who find any excuse to oversee the suffering he had undergone and the truthful motives behind all his actions. He is perhaps the only freedom fighter who has faced the ‘privilege‘ to be maligned by both his enemies and the people whose empowerment he fought for all his life.

When you see a Congress leader remove his plaque in the cellular jail that became his memorial; when you see the president of the same party getting cheered after claiming Savarkar was “begging for mercy and clemency”; when you see an unreasonable tweet (embedded below) labelling him as a traitor, you seriously wonder what led to this utter defamation and whether he deserves such decisive slander. Such questions have led me to write this article. While there are many false allegations against Veer Savarkar, in this article, I plan to specifically address the allegations of him being a “traitor” and a “British Stooge”.

While it is sad to see such irresponsible remarks on a freedom fighter, we need to realise why such remarks are very disingenuous. Perhaps the most prototypical argument against Savarkar is the one that gives him the tag of a “traitor”.

The typical Congress spokesperson asserts that Savarkar was a “British sympathiser”. Their grounds? Cherry picked quotes, taken out of context and deliberate omissions of his innumerable statements opposing the British. They claim that Savarkar (who was put in the Andaman jail by the British), wrote letters supporting their Raj in India.

When Congress members tell us today that he was “anti-national” because he sent ‘mercy petitions and clemencies’ to British in jail, I simply ask: What got him in the Andaman Jail into the first place? Was it not his constant actions that evoked revolting against the British? Therefore, how can one be fundamentally against the British and a British sympathiser at the same time?

Nevertheless, the selectively quoted letters were in fact written, and done so under extremely gruesome treatment by the British in the Andaman jail (famously known as Kala Pani or Black Waters, for the way it treated those who were jailed there). His denigrators almost always quote a mercy petition of his, submitted in 1913.

Have a look at The Wire’s reference to it-

Screen Shot 2018-03-21 at 6.55.46 PM.jpg

Make no mistake when you look at their choice of words like “bitter complaints about other convicts from his party receiving better treatment,” they say, as though his objections were somehow juvenile, unreasonable and jealous of his compatriots. Of course, the complaints will seem “bitter” when The Wire skips the other part of his mercy petition. Perhaps it was too long to insert (the omitted part in bold, emphasis added):

“I had to pass full 6 months in solitary confinement. The other convicts had not. During that time I was put on the coir pounding though my hands were bleeding. Then I was put on the oil-mill – the hardest labour in the jail. Although my conduct during all the time was exceptionally good still at the end of these six months I was not sent out of the jail; though the other convicts who came with me were. From that time to this day I have tried to keep my behaviour as good as possible.”

Note here, that the solitary confinement had him spending his life all alone for six months, while other people had a share of interaction. They additionally made him pound coir with his bare hands where his hands were often dripped with blood. He had to manually turn a massive wheel, that would squeeze coconuts for oil and had to produce about 30 pounds a day. While this punishment was only given to those who were “not behaving with the guards”, Savarkar was often made to do it despite his good conduct. Left all alone, he scraped poems on the prison walls: “The soul that suffers get stronger. The aim is freedom of the motherland”. In order to torment him, the guards whitewashed the walls one which he scraped poems.  Having to go through life all alone, being allowed to write letters once in a year and a half, to his loved ones and going through tremendous physical and mental torture in a compressed cell. I ask all the Congressmen, how easy is that? But the most upsetting fact about the criticism Savarkar gets is the fact that he did not leave his love for the motherland, behind when tortured. The Wire, is happy with the reader believing that the letter was only about Savarkar bickering with jealousy on “other convicts from his party”, but it is that very letter that involves him expressing his feelings on Indians and asking for every prisoner to be released, with the exception of him (emphasis added):

“If the manhood of the nation be allowed to phase glories and responsibilities of the empire with perfect equality with other citizens of it, then Indian patriots of all shades and opinions can conscientiously feel that burning sense of loyalty that one feels for one’s motherland. I also beg to submit that nothing can contribute so much to the widening and deepening of the sentiment of loyalty as a general release of all those prisoners who had been convicted for committing political offences in India. With my exception, let all the rest be released.“

Yet, beyond a point of constant rejection by the British official, it seems that something occurred to Savarkar: staying in jail would neither do him good nor serve the nation. Thus, one would observe a drastic change of tone and astonishing appeasement towards colonialists, leading to his release, after ten years of being tortured. Some called this appeasement sheer treachery; some said that he did it to escape the agonising jail; other said he wanted to find a way out of the jail to serve India. It is not difficult to figure out which it is, after analysing his actions after being released. Not to forget, he was told to be careful because his years in Andaman could be resumed if he was found working “against the government”. Yet, he promoted his nationalistic thoughts using false names (pseudonyms) and still carried his opinions forward. But when the British monitored, he issued statements supporting colonialism.

But people still accuse being a colonialist, because he encouraged Indian soldiers to join the British army. However, icons such as Bose and Ambedkar recognised the purpose behind Indianising the British army, because it would create room for an internal rebellion, instead of losing by fighting on the Indian side and getting killed by the British.

On many occasions, we have seen Indians side the British, in far less demanding situations, and still be called freedom fighters. If a man like Rahul Gandhi ignores Savarkar’s fight for independence and only wishes to look at him encouraging Indians to fight for the British (for quite justified reasons), perhaps he must also know that Mahatma Gandhi wanted Indian soldiers to fight for the British during the First World War. But that does not mean the father of our nation was anti-national, does it?

If we get into specifics, Nehru wished for the same thing in World War II. When Indian soldiers actually had to fight for the British in the Second World War and give up a lot of lives, Bose and Savarkar were radically opposed to giving up Indian men for the British cause when Nehru staunchly supported it. Going by the typical Congressman’s logic, Nehru too can be labelled as a “traitor” for encouraging Indian soldiers to join the British army. But when Nehru does it, they call it “political astuteness” and when Savarkar does it in more justified situations, they call it “treachery”.

Dear Congress, why this pseudo-analysis?

Their school of thought cherry-picks quotations of Savarkar’s writings and strongly misrepresents his intentions, by stooping to the lows of mockery.  Their narrative is dishonest and profoundly manipulative. It not only demeans Savarkar’s actual contributions but even ridicules his unimaginable sufferings. A truthful analysis of his letters, words and works tell us, that the “siding of colonialism” just consisted of measures taken to be safe from the British who suspected him, while he continued to work and serve the cause of Indian independence.

But still, this debate has more meaning than whataboutery. The purpose of this article has been to honestly illustrate the context behind Savarkar’s actions; the same actions that people unfairly hold against him.

The impression given off by the likes of Rahul Gandhi, is that a Congressman can side the British cause; but the moment a Hindu nationalist, is seen to remotely do the same (however fictitious the ‘siding’ may be), his character must be questioned and his organisation must be downgraded, along with all its supporters. While some loyal adherents of this unfair ideology have used every opportunity to defame Savarkar, it is on us to be truthful to his legacy.

The striking factor about our freedom fighter is that he never held back when it came to talking about the Indian rights, in jail and outside. That unconditional love for the motherland, along with the sincere courage to do anything for India, is why the name is ‘Veer’ Savarkar.

Bollywood actress, Koena Mitra, accuses the West Bengal government of settling illegal Rohingyan immigrants

0

Bollywood actress, Koena Mitra, tweeted on Saturday on Rohingyans being provided with a safe haven in West Bengal. She accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of giving Rohingyans land and settling them in the state despite Myanmar and Sri Lanka throwing them out because of their terrorist activities. She also requested the Prime Minister and the President to help the state.

Earlier, she had tweeted a quote of Ashin Wirathu, the leader of the 969 movement, where the Buddhist Monk says, “You can be full of kindness and love but you cannot sleep next to a mad dog.”

The TMC government has gained some notoriety in recent times due to its perceived Muslim appeasement. According to a recent to the Ministry of Home Affairs, 40000 Rohingyans staying across India have been instructed to settle in Bengal.

The Central government has maintained that the Rohingyans are illegal immigrants and a national security threat and must be deported. Not too long ago, an Al-Qaeda operative was arrested while trying to recruit Rohingyas in India amidst reports that terrorist organizations are radicalizing the ethnic community. The Rohingya crisis also threatens to destabilize India as certain Muslim clerics are issuing grave threats of riots and violence over the Central government’s intention of deporting Rohingyans. There have also been reports of Rohingya terrorists slaughtering Hindus in Myanmar.

Koena Mitra is the latest among the growing list of voices demanding the deportation of Rohingyans. Currently, Supreme Court is hearing a petition to prevent the deportation of Rohingyans filed by Prashant Bhushan where the petitioners are two Rohingya immigrants.

Muslim men give death threats to neighbour after stealing and slaughtering his cow

0

A case of Muslim men allegedly stealing and slaughtering a cow has come to light from Khushalpur village in Uttarakhand’s Sahaspur area. As per reports, Kurban a resident of the village lodged a complaint at Sahaspur Police Station on Friday alleging that, his cow was stolen. The complainant Kurban also alleged that the accused in the matter had threatened to kill him if he decided to report the matter to the police.

Reports claimed that, following the investigation, the police found that Salman, Amir, Ameeran, and Furkan all belonging to the same village had stolen and slaughtered the cow. Following raids by the police, they managed to arrest 24-year-old Furkan. His subsequent interrogation led the police to the cow’s remains which were then sent for analysis.

A case has been registered against the four under the cow protection law, and sections 506 and 380 of the IPC which pertain to criminal intimidation and theft respectively. A manhunt has been launched to arrest the three other accused. The police have claimed that the accused have a history of cow slaughter related offences and have been imprisoned seven times in the past.

Even though the media’s focus has been lopsided in favour of crimes committed by so-called “gau rakshaks” there have been numerous instances of criminal activities perpetrated by cow thieves and smugglers.

The region of Dehradun near to Sahaspur area had recently seen the arrest of a man for using a dairy compound for smuggling and slaughtering bovines. About a week back in the same city, the police arrested Iqbal, Gulfam and Mehendi for allegedly running an illegal slaughterhouse. Six cows were rescued from Iqbal’s house, which was later sealed.

Besides this, it was reported in October 2017, how a team of court commissioners, lawyers, police and NGO members were attacked by a 250 men strong mob, while they were cracking down on illegal slaughterhouses operating in Bangalore. A few days before that, a women techie was brutally assaulted by a 150-200 strong mob in the city’s Avalahalli area, after she reported an instance of cow slaughter from the region.

Amit Shah writes a detailed letter to Chandrababu Naidu full of facts, figures and some tough questions

0

The political battle over special status to Andhra Pradesh has stalled the parliament for nearly two weeks. It has also lead to the exit of TDP ministers in the central cabinet and the party’s exit from NDA alliance. The centre’s refusal to provide special status to Andhra Pradesh has apparently evoked strong emotions among people in the state.

In order to explain the BJPs stance and put forward details and facts on the centre’s assistance to Andhra, the BJP president Amit Shah has written a letter to the TDP chief and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

The BJP president made stern remarks about TDP’s exit from the NDA alliance. He wrote: This decision is both unfortunate and unilateral. It is a decision; I am afraid, will be construed as being guided wholly and solely by political considerations instead of development concerns.

He added that the states development figures prominently in the BJP’s agenda of national development and the government led by PM Modi had left no stone unturned in ensuring the development of the state. Mr Shah went on to list details of the assistance provided by the centre. He wrote :

Andhra has received special assistance and attention as the young state needed nurturing and investments to give its economy a greater impetus. Facts mentioned in the following paragraphs explain how the central government has not only fulfilled its statutory requirements but also gone far beyond to ensure that the state becomes financially strong.

Important facts listed in the letter are summarised below.

11 educational institutions: As per the AP reorganisation act, the centre was to help in setting up 11 educational institutes by 2022. Shah said that nine institutions (IIT, IIM, IIIT, IISER, NIT, IIPE, Agri university, NIDM, AIIMS type hospital cum teaching institution) had already been set up and they had been functioning in the state. The remaining two institutions and a tribal university had been given to the state in the current budget as per the president.

The AP reorganisation act recommends 8 infrastructure projects subject to feasibility as per Shah. He highlights that 5 projects have already been initiated. These include HPCL greenfield oil refinery, 800km Vizag-Chennai industrial corridor, up-gradation of three airports (Vishakapatnam, Tirupati, and Vijayawada) to international standards, rail and road connectivity to new capital Amaravati and in principle approval for Vijayawada metro rail project. For the metro project, the BJP president said that a proposal was awaited from the state.

Among the remaining three projects, he claimed that Duggirapatnam port and steel plant in YSR district had been found to be unviable initially. He said the centre was exploring options to ensure they are achieved. Regarding the promise of a new railway zone, Shah said the government was actively considering the proposal.

Regarding revenue deficit grants of Amit Shah highlighted that the state had been granted Rs 22,113 crore of funds for the period 2015-2020 by the 14th finance commission. He added that the state was the only state apart from northeast and hilly states to get such grants. Shah said that the central assistance had been doubled in comparison to previous 5 years.

Shah went on to add that the Rs 16,000 crore deficit claimed by Andhra was fallacious as it included the farm loan waivers and pensions. Shah said other BJP states had also given farm loan waivers, but they had done it with their own resources. ‘Is it not political brinkmanship to make unjustified demand and then allege neglect when they are not accepted?’ he asked.

He mentioned that ‘Special Assistance Measure’ (financial package) offered to Andhra Pradesh was equivalent to the benefits the state would have got under the special status category. The BJP president added that the TDP which had hailed the package as an achievement was now making a U-turn. Shah questioned as to why the state had refused to form a special purpose vehicle to receive funds from NABARD (National Bank For Agriculture And Rural Development) as suggested by the finance ministry.

Amit Shah highlighted assistance provided to the construction of the new capital city and the Polavaram irrigation/drinking water project. He said that only 8% of the 1000 crore fund provided for Amravati by MoHUA were utilised so far. He added that the centre had provided a total of 2500 crores for the new capital. In addition to this, he highlighted that the centre had provided Rs 5364 crores of funds for the Polavaram project whose estimated cost was Rs 16,010.45 crores in 2010-11. He added that the finance minister had promised to fund the irrigation component of the project from 1.4.2014 onwards on 8.9.2016.

In his conclusion, Amit Shah wrote: Unfortunately partisan politics has overtaken leading to your party leaving the NDA. Regardless of these facts, BJP reiterates its commitment to the people of Andhra Pradesh and steadfastly continue for the development of the state.

TDP had not responded to the letter at the time of the publication of this article. We had earlier argued as to how the special status demand of Andhra if granted, would lead to a domino effect. Though the BJP president’s letter may not convince the TDP chief, the facts are now before the public.

Rajiv Dhawan continues his ridiculous arguments in the Ram Janmabhoomi case

0

Senior Counsel Rajiv Dhawan, in a bizarre analogy, asserted that minorities receive preferential treatment and ought to receive it because they are weak. He said, “Parents give more attention to a weak child so as to enable him/her to be stronger. Same is the case with preferential treatment to minorities.” The statement appears to be eerily similar to Manmohan Singh’s remark that Muslims must have the first right to resources.

After asserting that Ram Janambhoomi belongs to Allah in the last hearing, Rajiv Dhawan on Friday again emphasized on Islamic scriptures while continuing on his submissions on the need to revisit the law laid down in 1994 in Islamil Farooqi by a five-judge bench. He said, “We have perused the Quran and the Hadith. A mosque is to be a mosque forever.” He added, “You can destroy a Mosque but you cannot rob it of its religious significance.”

The Farooqi judgment observed that a Mosque is not an essential part of Islam. It asserted that a Mosque “is not an essential part of the practice of the religion of Islam and namaz by Muslims can be offered anywhere, even in open and accordingly, its acquisition is not prohibited by the provisions in the Constitution.”

On March 14, the Supreme Court had dismissed all 32 intervention petitions filed by ’eminent’ citizens such as Teesta Setalvad and Shyam Benegal. The next date for the hearing has been fixed for April 6th.

ED searches Nirav Modi’s Samudra Mahal properties: Total assets seized stand at Rs 7664 crores now

0

The Enforcement Directorate searched residences of Nirav Modi in Mumbai. The searches, beginning on Friday were conducted in a 15.45 crore flat and an 81 crore penthouse in  Worli’s sea-facing Samudra Mahal apartments. The properties were attached by ED previously in February. They were among the 21 immovable properties attached by them with a total worth of 523 crores.

ED seized several paintings, antique jewellery and expensive watches in this search.

The total worth of assets seized by ED, in this case, has now become 7664 crores with the latest seize. Nirav Modi has been leading an ultra luxurious lifestyle and the value of items seized are often in crores.

In the recent search, a single ring was reported to be worth 10 crores.

In earlier instances too the ED had found steel almirahs full of expensive watches and a fleet of luxury cars in Nirav Modi’s residential properties.

The 21 properties included 135 acres of land, a solar power plant and a farmhouse in Alibaug along with several other residential and business dwellings.

The ED has taken swift action after the 12,000 crores PNB scam was unearthed and it has also seized gems, gold and diamonds from Nirav Modi’s several business outlets across the country. The investigation agency has frozen his bank deposits and shares. They have also initiated the process of seizing his overseas assets. Nirav Modi is still absconding.
