Digikala, Iran’s Amazon, faces heat for posting images of female employees without hijab, govt initiates legal action

On Monday, July 24, after the largest e-commerce business in Iran, Digikala, posted images online of female employees without the required Islamic hijab, the Iranian government shut down one of its offices and initiated legal action against it. 

The action seems to be a part of a fresh effort that was started last week to enforce the Islamic dress code, which came under scrutiny in the face of intense protests in 2022.

Digikala, often known as ‘Iran’s Amazon,’ appears to have broken the law by publishing images of a corporate event where some female employees were not covering themselves with the mandatory hijab.

More than 300,000 merchants are hosted by Digikala, which gets more than 40 million active monthly visitors. Western sanctions related to Iran’s contested nuclear programme have effectively cut off Iranians from online businesses like Amazon, promoting Digikala indirectly.

One of Digikala’s offices has been sealed, according to a story published late Sunday on the website of Iran’s Hamshahri newspaper, which is connected to the Tehran municipality. The website, however, was reportedly functioning smoothly.

The judiciary of Iran’s website stated that judicial cases had been brought in relation to the images on Digikala. No further information regarding the same was however provided.

Anti-Hijab Protests in Iran

Last year, nationwide demonstrations broke out in Iran after Mahsa Amini, 22, passed away while being held by the morality police. She appeared to have been jailed for disobeying the nation’s dress code, which mandates that women cover their hair in public and that both men and women dress ‘conservatively’.

Women had a significant role in the protests, which swiftly turned into demands for the collapse of Iran’s theocracy, which assumed control following the 1979 revolution. Following a violent crackdown by the authorities, approximately 20,000 demonstrators were imprisoned and more than 500 of them were killed. At the beginning of this year, the protests generally subsided, although there are still many indications of discontent in the country. 

The morality police predominantly disappeared from the streets when the protests started last year and many women stopped covering their heads with the hijab, especially in Tehran and other cities.

However, officials maintained that the laws had not altered throughout the crisis. The hijab is seen by Iran’s governing clergy as a crucial component of the Islamic Republic, and Western-style clothing is decried as a symbol of decadence.

The morality police were back on the streets last week as authorities launched a new initiative to make women wear the hijab.

The interrogation of two suspected terrorists caught in the Pune city of Maharashtra has made many shocking revelations. The accused were planning to carry out a blast by placing explosives in a bike in Pune city. For this, they were doing a recce of crowded and sensitive areas of Pune through drones. They also wanted to carry out bomb blasts in Jaipur. Information about the whereabouts and other frequented places of these terrorists in Pune is being collected. A search is on for one of their absconding accomplices.

On 18th July 2023, Pune police arrested two suspected terrorists Mohammad Imran Mohammad Yusuf Khan and Mohammad Yunus Mohammad Yakub Saki for their alleged involvement in a terror case in Rajasthan. The suspected terrorists were on the “most wanted” list of the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Maharashtra Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has taken over the probe. 

Mohammed Yusuf Khan, 23, and Mohammed Yunus Mohammed Yakub Saki, 24, are both residents of Ratlam in Madhya Pradesh. The police are looking for their accomplice, Mohammed Shahnawaz Shafiurrehman Alam, 31, who managed to flee while being taken for a house search.

They were arrested for attempting to steal a motorcycle, but later during the probe, it was found that they were involved in the terror group Al-Sufa. It was also found that NIA has announced a reward of Rs 5 lakh on their capture.

Around 2.45 a.m., a patrolling squad from the Kothrud police station, consisting of constables Pradeep Chavan and Amol Nazan, noticed the three men stealing a two-wheeler. After a chase, the cops nabbed them.

At the Kothrud police station, an FIR was filed against them under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, the Indian Arms Act, and the Maharashtra Police Act. According to the police, the accused stayed in an apartment in Chetna Garden, Mitha Nagar, Kondhwa. Both Khan and Saki are graphic artists from Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, and Alam is from Hazaribagh, Jharkhand.

Police teams searched their Pune residence and found several suspicious items, including a box containing “drone material,” a pistol pouch, a live cartridge, some “white coloured pills,” fake Aadhaar cards, and various other documents. A Pune court remanded the two suspected terrorists to the custody of Pune city police till July 25 for further investigation.

The two fled Ratlam after learning that their names had surfaced in the investigation into the terror case in which some suspected Al-Sufa members had been arrested by Rajasthan police in Ratlam. It is worth recalling that in March this year, Rajasthan police’s ATS and Special Operation Group (SOG) recovered 12 kg of explosives and material used in assembling explosive devices from the Chittorgarh district. Three suspected terrorists—Zubair, Altamas, and Saifullah belonging to the Al-Sufa terrorist group were arrested.

NIA had filed a Chargesheet against Imran Khan and 10 other accused persons on 22nd September 2022 after exposing the terror plot. NIA has said that ‘Sufa’ is deeply inspired by the activities of ISIS and is inclined toward the Jihadi ideology. Members of ‘Sufa’ had motivated other youths also to join this group for carrying out terror acts.

On Sunday, July 23, Communist leader Subhashini Ali attempted to maliciously use the ongoing disturbance in Manipur to spread canards against the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. Hours later, after being lambasted by Netizens for spreading fake news and getting the Manipur police to file a case against her and others, based on a complaint filed by BJP State Vice-President Chidananda Singh, the former MP and CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali ‘apologised’ for posting the fake news.

Twenty-four hours have, however, past since Subhashini Ali admitted that she had spread fake news about the Manipur incident and the RSS, yet she has not bothered to delete her malicious tweet.

On July 20, the video of the 4th May incident where a mob paraded two women naked and allegedly gang-raped one of them in Manipur went viral on social media after which opposition parties launched a relentless attack on BJP and stalled the parliament.

Trying to use the opportunity to defame BJP and RSS, several Communist leaders and social media users circulated an image of two men in RSS uniforms claiming that they are the culprits behind the horrific incident in Manipur seen in the viral video. Joining the bandwagon were former MP and CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali and JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh. They too tried to blame RSS for the incident. They used a photograph showing a man and a teenager in RSS uniforms to falsely claim that they are the men behind the viral video incident.

On the 23rd of July, Former MP and CPI(M) leader Subhashini Ali uploaded pictures of the two men in RSS dress along with the screengrab of the viral video of the Manipur incident. In her tweet, she writes, “They are the Manipur accused. Recognise them by their clothes.”

Infuriated by the audacious attempt to malign RSS’ image by propagating fake news, several social media users lambasted Subhashini Ali and other opposition leaders who used the image of the two men dressed in RSS uniforms and linked it to the Manipur incident.

Netizens schooled the CPI)M) leader by informing her that the two men in the photo were actually BJP’s Vice-President in Manipur Chidananda Singh and his teenage son Sachinanda Singh, and they have no link with the incident.

On the 23rd of July, BJP State Vice-President Chidananda Singh himself came out to bust the fake news. He wrote a letter to the Manipur DGP requesting to initiate legal action in this matter. In the letter, he gave the names of some of the handles or groups that have shared the fake news and asked the DGP to take necessary actions against them. 

When the netizens called out the propaganda and reminded her that this is fake news, she asked for apologies. Now, a day has passed since the CPI(M) leader tweeted her ‘apologetic’ tweet, yet she hasn’t bothered to take down her false and malicious tweet, leaving one to wonder if she was at all sincere or was it all a farce.

Union Government hikes interest rate on Employees Provident Fund for FY22-23 to 8.15%

On the 24th of July, the Union government announced a hike in the interest rate on deposits under the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) scheme for the financial year 2022-2023. It has been increased to 8.15% and it will benefit over 6 crore subscribers in FY23. 

It was earlier recommended by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT) of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO). According to a circular issued on Monday, 24 July, the EPFO said the Ministry of Labour and Employment has conveyed the approval of the central government about the increased EPF interest rate. Additionally, the EPFO has asked the filed offices to start crediting the interest at 8.15 percent on EPF for FY23 into the members’ accounts.

As per the convention, first, the CBT of EPFO deliberates on key issues like interest rate to be given to its subscribers which is based on the projected income of the retirement fund manager. the EPFO is projected to register an income of Rs 90,497.57 crore in FY23. 

Then, CBT’s recommendations are forwarded by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to the Ministry of Finance for their ratification. After Finance Ministry’s concurrence, the EPFO notifies about the interest rate for that financial year and starts crediting the rate of interest to the EPF subscribers.

In the current cycle, the Retirement fund body EPFO recommended to raise the interest rate on EPF deposits to 8.15% for FY23 for its over six crore subscribers on the 28th of March, 2023. Now, the EPFO has notified that it has received the concurrence/ratification of the Finance Ministry and would now start crediting the interest rates to their subscribers. 

The EPFO circular said, “The Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, has conveyed the approval of the Central Government under para 60(1) of Employees’ Provident Fund Scheme, 1952 to credit interest @ 8.15% for the year 2022-23 to the account of each member of the EPF Scheme as per the provisions under Para 60 of EPF Scheme, 1952.” 

According to the Ministry of Labour and Employment, the retirement fund body will be left with a surplus of Rs 663.91 crore after a payout to the subscribers at the increased 8.15% interest rate. 

The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) is a compulsory contribution for salaried employees, and employers are required to match this contribution to the EPF account. Every month, employees contribute 12% of their earnings to their EPF account, and the entire contribution is deposited into the account. With 70.2 million contributing members and 0.75 million contributing establishments, the EPFO is the largest retirement fund manager in the country.

When compared to other savings instruments, the EPFO rate remains one of the highest. For example – small savings rates range from 4.0% to 8.2%.

BJP Kuki MLA from Saikot, Paolienlal Haokip in a recently-penned op-ed went all out against his own party and government at the state and Centre over the violence in Manipur. Titled “Manipur violence could not be contained because of the complicity of Biren Singh government”, Haokip in his article directly holds the N Biren Singh government responsible for the violence. Notably, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh is a Meitei himself.

“Proof of state complicity can clearly be discerned from the fact that what started out as a purely ethnic-communal violence was, later on, attempted to be portrayed by the Chief Minister as the state’s war on ‘narco terrorists’. The narrative seemed to be aimed at justifying the use of state forces to aid the radicalised Meitei militia in attacking and burning down Kuki Zo settlements in the foothills surrounding the Imphal valley, beyond which it doesn’t seem to hold much water”, the BJP MLA wrote.

Haokip also accused CM Biren Singh of being “hands in glove” with radical organisations namely Meitei Leepun and Arambai Tenggol. The Kuki leader concludes the article by demanding that AFSPA be reimposed in the state.

This is not the first time that the BJP Kuki leader has spoken out against his government. In an interview with the propaganda website Newslaundry, Haokip while on one hand criticised PM Modi’s message on Manipur, on the other hand, he said that the community (Kuki) is pleading with the Centre. “Central government is holding all the cards and that’s why we are still pleading with the Central government. We have no hope of justice from the state government whatsoever”, he said.

“There is no security of life for me even as an elected MLA”, said Paolienlal Haokip, who has openly demanded a separate administration which is in line with the demand for a separate state for Kukis called “Kukiland”. Haokip was amongst the ten Kuki MLAs to raise the demand accusing the state government of supporting “unabated violence by the majority Meitei community”. However, the HAC Chairperson Dinganglung Gangmei, a BJP MLA had distanced himself and other Naga MLAs from the demand.

A day after violence broke out in Manipur on 3rd May, the Kuki MLA took to Twitter criticising the Biren Singh government as he tagged PM Modi, HM Shah, and other BJP leaders. On 13th May, Haokip tweeted, “Peace is separation from people who hate you. You may not hate them, but it’s better to be apart than quarrel and get killed”.

Haokip also seemed to have criticised the Chief Minister’s eviction drive against illegal immigrants who have occupied reserved and protected forest land in the hill areas in Manipur. In an interesting twist, he writes, “Tribal lands were constituted as reserved forests and protected forests without following the norms that require the tribals to claim pre-existing rights, if any.”

Further into the article, the Kuki leader writes that the ethnic violence is “perceived as a war of liberation by Kuki Zo people” and the same is perceived as “war to claim tribal land”. In both cases, it appears that the BJP Kuki leader has admitted to ethnic violence by both communities but seems to appear critical only of the Meiteis.

In June this year, BJP Kuki leaders sought Biren Singh’s resignation days after the resignation of four MLAs.

Currently, the Biren Singh-led Manipur cabinet includes two Kuki ministers namely Nemcha Kipgen of Kangpokpi constituency, and Letpao Haokip of Tengnoupal constituency. Besides Paolienlal Haokip, other BJP Kuki MLAs are Ngursanglur Sanate from Tipaimukh constituency, LM Khaute from Churachandpur constituency, Letzamang Haokip from Henglep constituency, and Vungjagin Valte from Thanlon constituency.

2021 copper wire theft case: Railway police nabs mastermind Kuddus Ismail Sheikh, a Bangladeshi resident evading arrest for last 2 years

On July 21, 2023, the Western Railway’s RPF arrested a Bangladeshi resident identified as Kuddus Ismail Sheikh from Mazgaon in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The accused, as reported by Free Press Journal, is said to be the mastermind behind the 2021 daring copper wire theft of five local trains parked in Virar Carshed in Maharashtra.

The accused has been on the run for the last two years while his 17 accomplices were nabbed and sent to jail. Kuddus reportedly returned to India in January 2023 after fleeing to Bangladesh in October 2021. A special RPF team was sent out on June 29, 2023, to apprehend the accused after receiving information about his presence in Mumbai’s Govandi neighbourhood.

On July 22, 2023, Kuddus was brought before Vasai Road Railway Court, where he admitted to his role in the copper wire theft and provided information about his accomplices. He admitted they had sold the copper wires that had been stolen.

“The successful arrest was the result of relentless efforts by the RPF Virar team, working in collaboration with various agencies and sources of information. Kuddus Ismail Sheikh is currently in RPF custody until July 26, 2023” said an official of WR.

The event, which happened on October 16, 2021, involved the breaking of the locks on the coaches of five local trains, which led to the theft of copper cables and other railway supplies worth Rs 7,18,080. Kuddus had eluded capture up until recently, while the other 17 accused had been detained and had served their prison sentences.

In 2019, at least four UN Refugee card holder Rohingyas were among the six nabbed by the Police for allegedly stealing copper wires from the metro stations and metro tracks in Noida and Delhi. According to reports, the accused would steal copper wires by climbing over the station’s wall and have multiple cases of theft lodged against them. The copper wire recovered from them are worth approximately Rs 10 lakh.

Aslam, Asif, Manjur Alam, Nazir and Ali Hasan were residents of Delhi while Zubair Malik was from Mawana, Meerut. Zubair was believed to be the gang leader. Of these, at least four had United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) issued refugee cards, valid till November 2020.

Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain, representing the Hindu petitioners in the Shringar Gauri-Gyanvapi complex case has revealed that the Muslim side misled the Supreme Court on the scientific survey of the disputed structure called the Gyanvapi mosque which was initiated earlier on Monday. The apex court, on hearing the objections of the Anjuman Intezamia Committee (AIC) against the ASI survey, imposed a stay on the survey till 5 pm on 26th July.

“After hearing both sides, the SC has stayed the district court order till 5 pm on 26th July and has directed the Allahabad High Court to decide the case afresh. We will present our arguments before the Allahabad High Court. But I want to say this that the Muslim side, Anjuman Intezamia misled the Supreme Court and gave the wrong statement that excavation is being held there whereas no such excavation process has begun there,” Jain said while speaking to the media after the SC order.

On Monday, July 24, the Supreme Court of India halted the ongoing Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) survey at the disputed Gyanvapi Mosque structure till 5 PM on 26th July. The matter was mentioned before the apex court by senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi on behalf of the Gyanvapi Masjid Committee against Varanasi district court’s order directing ASI to conduct a scientific survey at the disputed structure premises, excluding the sealed area where Shivling was found last year.

Advocate Ahmadi while presenting the arguments on behalf of the committee said that the survey team had begun digging at the western wall. “They have already started digging at the western wall, with what responsibility is the SG saying no excavation done”, Advocate Ahmadi reportedly argued.

SG Tushar Mehta confirmed only measurement and photography were being conducted by ASI, and not even a brick was being touched or will be touched in the future. However, Ahmadi kept asking for a stay on the survey.

The argument was made even as the survey on 24th July only consisted of inspection work.

Meanwhile, senior advocate Hari Shankar Jain also representing the Hindu petitioners said that the order does not mean a stay on the survey itself. He said, “There is no stay on the survey…don’t say it like that. The SC has rather said that breathing time is being granted to them since the order was delivered on Friday so they should get two days’ time till 5 PM of 26th July, Wednesday to approach the High Court. The only difference is that they can challenge, this shouldn’t be seen as a stay (on the survey). Because they have only been granted the right to move HC and till then the order will not be implemented that’s all.”

The senior advocate further said that the order cannot be called wrong. “The survey which was being done in accordance with a court order was right and the order given by the SC is also right. If there is no stay granted by the HC till 5 pm on 26th July then the survey will resume. We will also move High Court,” Hari Shankar Jain said.

West Bengal: Ex-TMC member stripped naked, thrashed by TMC goons for joining Congress party in Murshidabad

On Sunday (July 23) afternoon, a woman was reportedly stripped naked and beaten by miscreants associated with the ruling Trinamool Congress party. The incident took place in Burwan village in the Murshidabad district of West Bengal.

As per a report by Aaj Tak Bangla, the woman was thrashed and sexually assaulted by TMC goons for joining the Congress party. When two Congress workers tried to save the victim, they were also beaten by the miscreants.

The Trinamool Congress goons also attacked the family members of the two Congress workers, who came to the rescue of the woman. The victim and three others were admitted to the local hospital, before being transferred to the Kandi Subdivision hospital.

Citing local sources, Aaj Tak Bangla reported that the woman was a member of the ruling Trinamool Congress party. After being denied a ticket in the panchayat election, she contested the polls as an independent candidate.

The victim later joined the Congress party. After TMC goons learnt about the matter, they beat her black and blue. “I was a member of the Trinamool Congress. I supported the Congress party so they thrashed me brutally. The TMC miscreants disrobed and assaulted me on the road,” the woman narrated.

“They stripped me naked and beat me,” she told an Aaj Tak Bangla reporter. The incident led to an atmosphere of chaos and unrest in the area. On being informed about the matter, the police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control.

While speaking about the matter, BJP national spokesperson Amit Malviya said, “Another day, another woman is assaulted and stripped naked in West Bengal’s Burwan (Murshidabad). She was assaulted by TMC workers because she supported an independent candidate, who is now with Congress.

“Mamata Banerjee has maintained stoic silence. So has Rahul Gandhi,” he emphasised. The development comes days amid public outrage over a viral video from Manipur wherein two women were gang-raped and paraded naked by a mob of men.

BJP workers sexually assaulted by TMC goons in West Bengal

On Thursday (July 20), a BJP gram sabha candidate in West Bengal informed that she was physically assaulted, stripped and paraded naked by workers of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) party during the panchayat elections.

As per a report by ANI, the incident took place on July 8, 2023, in Dakshin Panchla in the Howrah district of West Bengal. In her official complaint filed with the Panchla police, the victim narrated that the assault was carried out by TMC gram sabha candidate Hemanta Roy at the polling station.

She further added that Roy was accompanied by other 40-50 TMC workers, including Noor Alam, Sanju Das, Ranabir Panja, Sukamal Panja, Alfi Sk. The copy of the First Information Report (FIR), as reported by Republic TV, read, “They hit me on my chest, and head with sticks and pushed me out of the polling booth.”

The victim pointed out that the TMC gram sabha candidate instigated party workers such as Sukamal Panja and Ali Sheikh to tear her saree and inner dress. “They further assaulted me and forced me to undress naked and molested me in front of other people,” she emphasised.

On Friday (July 21), BJP national spokesperson Amit Malviya informed that a woman candidate of his party was groped and assaulted by workers of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government in West Bengal.

He had shared the screenshot of an online police complaint, filed by the victim wherein she accused two TMC workers, namely Arun Thakur and Shuvankar Malik of sexually assaulting her.

The complaint filed with the Domjur police stated, “This said persons touched the secret part of my body throughout the counting and as well beat me during the counting.”

“As per the guideline of respected High Court a male was not supposed to touch a female, but this said persons continuously beaten me and touched the secret parts of my body which is against law and order,” it added.

The victim said that the assault was orchestrated by TMC Block (Jagatballavpur) President Subir Chatterjee and Dibyendu Chatterjee, TMC President for Makardah-1 Anchal. She also requested to police to analyse the CCTV footage of Room No 2 and Table No 9 (Round 1) in the Domjur counting hall.

“This is also to inform you that we have requested many times verbally to Domjur BDO Gargi Das but she has not taken any satisfactory action against this. Hope you will take necessary action against the said person and will continue with your legal steps against this said persons to save the democracy of India,” the BJP candidate said in her complaint.

Gujarat: Police arrest Godhra train massacre convict Qasim Abdul Sattar for jumping parole

On Saturday, 22nd July, Gujarat police arrested Godhra train burning case convict Qasim Abdul Sattar alias Qasim Biryani Gaji Ghanchi from Panchmahal district a year after he jumped parole. Sattar was serving a life sentence for his involvement in the Godhra train massacre in 2002. Last year, Sattar jumped parole and was absconding since then. Police received a tip-off that he was living in Limkheda taluka. The parole furlough squad of Panchmahal police raided the location and arrested him.

Sattar was handed over to the City B division police, from where he would be shifted to Sabarmati central jail in Ahmedabad to serve the rest of his sentence. Interestingly, this is the second time Sattar jumped parole. In 2021, he jumped parole but was arrested by the police. It is unclear on what grounds he was granted parole despite jumping it once before.

Godhra Train Massacre

On 27th February 2002, an Islamist mob set two coaches of the Sabarmati Express on fire in Godhra. 59 Hindu karsevaks, including children and women, were burnt alive in the incident. Following the train burning incident, communal riots broke out in Gujarat, leaving 1,200 persons dead and several thousand injured.

Sattar was part of the Islamist mob that attacked the train carrying the Hindu devotees. In March 2022, he was arrested and charged with sections pertaining to murder, attempt to murder, dacoity, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, deterring public servant, and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, Railway Act and Prevention of Damages to Public Properties Act.

In March 2011, 11 convicts were handed death sentences in the matter, and 20 were sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court. Six years later, the death penalty for 11 convicts was commuted to life imprisonment by Gujarat High Court, while the court upheld life imprisonment for 20 others.

Madhya Pradesh: Illegal property of Akhtar Ali, accused of raping a minor in mid-July, bulldozed off in Raisen

On Sunday, July 23, the Raisen administration in Madhya Pradesh drove a bulldozer over the illegal property of one Akhtar Ali accused of raping and harassing a minor girl. The bulldozer was rolled in the presence of Sub Divisional Magistrate and Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Devnagar village of Raisen district.

According to the reports, the accused aged 35 molested a minor girl on July 17 when she was alone at home. As per the police complaint filed by the girl, her father had gone to the farm when the accused entered her home and took her forcefully to the backyard. He molested her and touched her inappropriately.

On seeing the girl crying for help the neighbors rushed but the accused had managed to escape from the spot till then. The accused Akhtar Ali has been booked under section 376 ab, 376 n, 506 of the Indian Penal Code and under section 5 m, 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

The local Hindu organisations condemned the incident and protested against the rape and molestation of the minor girl. They demanded severe action against the accused. Following this, the Sub Divisional Magistrate led the bulldozer action and pulled down the illegal property of the accused in Devnagar village.

Police officer Vikas Kumar Shahwal confirmed the incident and said that the accused has been arrested by the police. Further investigations in the case are underway.
