‘Are you a Muslim or do you share your lineage with a prostitute’: Islamists attack actor-director Farhan Akhtar over his Diwali post

Actor Farhan Akhtar attracted the wrath of Islamists online after he took to Instagram to share Diwali greetings. The ‘Rock On’ actor had shared a picture of himself with others offering puja on the occasion of Diwali and wished “Happy Diwali”.

In the image, Farhan could be seen putting a tilak on the forehead of his girlfriend Shibani Dandekar, who is sitting to his right. Farhan’s business partner and producer Ritesh Sidhwani is also seen with his wife Dolly Sidhwani, who could be seen sitting around the puja paraphernalia. Reportedly, the two families had gathered for a pooja held on the occasion of Dhanteras, which was held at their office in Excel Entertainment.

However, this did not sit well with Islamists, who were quick to take offence at the picture and accused Farhan of indulging in activities which are prohibited in Islam. Idolatry or worshipping any other god other than Allah is considered an unpardonable sin according to Islamic texts.

Soon after the picture was uploaded on Instagram, a raft of Islamists descended on Farhan’s post and abused him for celebrating a Hindu festival.

Islamists slam Farhan Akhtar for indulging in ‘shirk’ over his Diwali post

A Twitter user seemed particularly worked up on Farhan’s Instagram post where he was seen celebrating Diwali. He posted a string of comments reviling the actor for indulging in Diwali festivities, saying Islam did not permit it. The user also questioned if the actor if he has any faith or if he shares his lineage with a prostitute.

Another Islamist seemed so perturbed by Farhan’s post that he ranted in Urdu what appeared like feelings expressing shock and despair.

There were other Islamists who accused Farhan of practicing ‘shirk’. Shirk is idol worshipping or idolatry. It is worth noting that idol worshipping or idolatry is considered an unpardonable sin as per Islamic texts and carries strict punishment. The Quran considers shirk as a sin that will not be forgiven if a person dies without repenting of it.

Actor Sara Ali Khan slammed by Islamists for visiting Kedarnath temple

Earlier this week, actor Sara Ali Khan came under the firing line of Islamists after she posted pictures of herself and Janhavi Kapoor from their visit to Kedarnath temple on her Instagram account.

The Islamists then took to Sara’s Instagram post and started reviling the actor for visiting the Hindu shrine despite being a Muslim. A barrage of despicable comments were made against the actor saying she committed a big sin as per Islam by visiting the hallowed shrine of Kedarnath, the abode of Hindu God Lord Shiva. One of the Islamists even called her a ‘Kafir Muslim’.

‘When next karseva happens, not bullets but flowers will be showered on the devotees of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna’: Yogi Adityanath

A day before Diwali, UP CM Yogi Adityanath said that in the next karseva, not bullets but flowers will be showered on the devotees of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna. Yogi was referring to the firing order issued by Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav who was chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and had ordered the police to open fire on karsevaks and Ram Bhakts in 1990.

Yogi Adityanath hailed the power of people and democracy, saying it is because of them that those who ordered firing on Ram Bhakts are now bowing in front of them.

“31 years ago, bullets were fired at Rambhakts & Karsewaks in Ayodhya. Chanting Jai Shri Ram & voicing support for Ram Temple were considered a crime. But it is power of the people & democracy that those who ordered firing on Rambhakts today bow to your power,” UP mC Yogi Adityanath said while addressing the public during Deepotsav in Ayodhya.

Speaking about the power of democracy, Yogi said if people continued the way they did, those who ordered firing on karsevaks, along with their families will line up for the next karseva.

“Today it appears that if you continue like this, they & their entire family will line up for next Karsewa. When next Karsewa would happen, not bullets but flowers will be showered on devotees of Lord Rama & Lord Krishna. This is power of democracy,” Yogi Adityanath said.

The chief minister had earlier announced that nine lakh earthen lamps will be lit up in Ayodhya to celebrate Diwali. The celebration will be enlightened with a special show of 500 drones that will showcase Ramayan scenes in the sky.

What happened in 1990

On the last week of October in 1990, orders from the powers that be to then IG SMP Sinha were clear. The Mulayam Singh government in Uttar Pradesh reportedly asked him to clear the streets occupied by karsevaks who were peacefully demonstrating to reclaim Ram Janmabhoomi. Sinha told his subordinates: There is a clear instruction from Lucknow that the crowd will not sit on the streets at any cost.

It was 9 am on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima on October 30, when Hindu saints and thousands of karsevaks, comprising also of women and elderly people, resumed their march towards the Ram Janmabhoomi site where the disputed structure then stood. The security forces, who were instructed to stop the Hindus from reaching the site, lined up on the road to block the way.

In a report published the next day by Jansatta, the number of dead karsevaks was stated to be 40. It had also stated that 60 others were badly wounded in the incident while it could not give the exact number of people who escaped with minor injuries. However, many other news agencies pegged the number of casualties in hundreds.

Police had again fired on Karevaks on November 2, killing and injuring many.

The firing took place on the explicit orders of then chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav. On the morning of October 30, the police had barricaded about 1.5 km-long pathway to the disputed structure. Ayodhya was in an unprecedented security cordon. Curfew had been imposed. Yet, sadhus and Karsevaks marched towards the structure.

By noon, police received orders from then Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to open fire at the karsevaks. The firing led to chaos and stampede. Police chased down the karsevaks in the streets of Ayodhya.

Another round of clash erupted on November 2, when the karsevaks came back and resumed their march towards the Ram Janmabhoomi site.

The Elite Revolutionary Guards of Iran have allegedly obstructed the United States from attempting to steal the oil in the Sea of Oman that belongs to the Islamic Republic. As per Iranian state TV, the incident took place recently. Reuters reported that Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet of the US said they have seen the reports of the incident but had no additional information on the matter.

As per Iran’s state TV, the US forces used warships and helicopters to block an oil tanker of Iran in the Sea of Oman. According to Anadolu Agency, a US military vessel confiscated the oil tanker of Iran and diverted oil to another tanker. It was headed to an undisclosed location. Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) naval forces got into action and took control of the second tanker. The US forces tried to chase the tanker with helicopters and warships but failed twice. It was brought back in Iran territorial waters.

IRGC claimed that it would soon release video footage of the whole incident. The United States has been reportedly warned by Iranian authorities on multiple occasions regarding its military activities in the Gulf. Iran has increased patrols to secure the passage of Iranian ships and put a curb on oil smuggling.

WHO finally approves Bharat Biotech’s Covid-19 vaccine Covaxin, grants it Emergency Use Listing status

0

Ending a long wait, the World Health Organization (WHO) on November 3 approved Covaxin, the Covid-19 vaccine developed and manufactured by Indian pharmaceutical company Bharat Biotech. The world health body granted the Emergency Use Listing status to Covaxin after the Technical Advisory Group of WHO recommended the same earlier today.

In a tweet thread, WHO said the Technical Advisory Group (TAG), an independent advisory committee of the World Health Organisation (WHO), has recommended Emergency Use Listing (EUL) status for Covaxin, the Covid-19 vaccine manufactured by India’s Bharat Biotech. It further added, “The Technical Advisory Group, convened by WHO and made up of regulatory experts from around the world, has determined that the #Covaxin vaccine meets WHO standards for protection against #COVID19, that the benefit of the vaccine far outweighs risks & the vaccine can be used Earth globe Europe-Africa.”

WHO further added that its Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization (SAGE) also reviewed the vaccine and recommended the use of this vaccine in two doses, with a dosing interval of four weeks, in all age groups 18 and above.

While talking about the vaccine for pregnant women, WHO said, “Available data on vaccination of pregnant women with the #Covaxin vaccine are insufficient to assess vaccine safety or efficacy in pregnancy; studies in pregnant women are planned, including a pregnancy sub-study and a pregnancy registry.”

The Technical Advisory Group had met on October 26 and sought additional details from Bharat Biotech. They decided to approve the vaccine after receiving the additional details from the company.

WHO had been delaying approval for Covaxin citing the requirement of additional information several times in the past few months. Dr Mariangela Simao, Assistant Director-General, Access to Medicines and Health Products at WHO, had earlier said, “Bharat Biotech has been submitting data regularly and very quickly, but they submitted the last batch of data on the 18th of October.”

What is TAG-EUL?

The TAG-EUL is an independent advisory group that recommends to WHO if a COVID-19 vaccine can be listed for emergency use under the procedure recommended by EUL. Data suggests Covaxin has shown 77.8 per cent effectiveness against symptomatic COVID-19 and 65.2 per cent protection against the new Delta variant.

Covaxin and Covishield by AstraZeneca are the most widely used Covid-19 vaccines in India. On Wednesday Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) also approved the extention of the shelf life of the vaccine up to 12 months.

In a tweet, Bharat Biotech said, “The CDSCO has approved the extension of shelf life of Covaxin up to 12 months, from the date of manufacture. This approval of shelf life extension is based on the availability of additional stability data, which was submitted to CDSCO.”

SC advocate Shashank Jha asks people to contact him if harassed by Delhi Police for bursting crackers, offers free legal help

0

A crackdown on firecracker sellers and traders by the Delhi Police just ahead of Diwali has triggered massive unrest amongst the masses. DCP outer Delhi, Parvinder Singh in a statement to media on Tuesday had said, “Patrolling will be done at several crowded places. We will file cases against those who would sell or burst crackers despite the ban.”

In response to the supposed ‘security arrangements’ being done by the police, Supreme Court advocate Shashank Shekhar Jha has offered free legal services to anyone who gets harassed by the police for bursting crackers in Delhi.

Jha quote Tweeting the statement said, “If Police harass you for bursting firecrackers in Delhi even after SC order: Contact me! No Hindus should be harassed since they wouldn’t be knowing of the ingredients of crackers. Will provide legal support to everyone for free.”

While speaking with OpIndia, Jha said that anyone being harassed or targeted can contact him via Twitter. He also informed that he is in the process of issuing a contact number to allow people to get in touch with him.

“I will take care of the legal expenses of the victim. If multiple people approach us, we will club their cases and approach the Delhi High Court. The victim or petitioner will not incur any expense in this process,” said Jha.

The advocate further said that bursting crackers on Diwali is a religious tradition and that the Modi government had introduced the concept of green crackers in 2018 itself.

SC says only crackers with Barium salts are banned

The Supreme Court on Friday had said that only those crackers with Barium salts are prohibited.  A bench comprising of Justices MR Shah and AS Bopanna said, “Under the guise of enjoyment, you [manufacturers] cannot play with the lives of citizens.”

“We are not against a particular community. We want to send a strong message that we are here for the protection of fundamental rights of citizens,” the Bench said further.

It is this order that Jha referred to in his Tweet.

Delhi Environment minister says ‘no leniency’

Meanwhile, the Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai said that the AAP-led Delhi government would show “zero tolerance” to violations of the firecracker ban.

“In a bid to curb pollution from illegal bursting of firecrackers this Diwali, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has directed the police and the SDMs to keep a 24×7 vigil,” Rai said on Tuesday.

“The Delhi Police and SDMs have been instructed to observe a 24-hour vigil to prevent the pollution caused by the firecrackers, with special attention in the border areas of Delhi. In this regard, the DPCC has issued instructions to the Delhi police and SDMs,” he added further.

Not just this, the Delhi government has also constituted a special vigilance campaign on border areas of Delhi to ensure no illegal purchase, sale, movement and storage of firecrackers anywhere.

Diplomatic row between China and Sri Lanka escalates as Colombo rejects Chinese shipment of contaminated fertilisers

A fresh diplomatic crisis seems to be brewing between Sri Lanka and China after the former rejected a consignment of Chinese fertiliser stating that it was contaminated and it did not pass its quality standards.

Sri Lanka’s Plant Protection Ordinance prohibits the government from importing any product that is found to host microbes or other harmful microorganisms. However, tests carried out on Chinese samples showed the batch was contaminated with harmful microbes. The Chinese officials, however, asked Sri Lanka to re-test the contaminated batch claiming the standards on the island nation did not meet the international standards

But Dr Ajantha de Silva, the Director-General of Agriculture, turned down China’s request for re-test, saying the tests carried out across the world are largely uniform in practice and standard and that a test carried out in one country is easily acceptable in another.

Sri Lanka conveyed its decision to China with a non-compliance report, informing Beijing that it has not allowed for bulk permit to the Chinese batch of fertilisers, which prevents it from entering or loading in Sri Lanka.

Chinese embassy in Sri Lanka blacklists People’s Bank of Sri Lanka over non-payment

The decision came days after the Chinese embassy in the island nation blacklisted the state-owned People’s Bank of Sri Lanka over its failure to make a payment for imported fertilisers. The bank had withheld payments to China’s Qingdao Seawin Biotech Group Co Ltd after fertiliser samples were allegedly found to contain microbes.

The Sri Lankan bank said it has to follow the order issued by the Commercial High Courts of Sri Lanka with regard to the trade transaction in question, which prevents the bank from processing the payment, and any and all future course of payments will be done as per the directive of courts.

‘Contaminated shipment of fertilisers won’t be accepted’: Sri Lanka

Speaking on the Chinese allegations of non-payment by the Sri Lankan bank, Silva said, “I don’t think Sri Lanka dishonoured the contract at any time. I believe it is the Chinese suppliers who have erred and breached the contract by sending us a contaminated shipment of fertilisers.”

He further asserted that if China is to send another batch of fertilisers, it must pass the country’s regulatory checks regarding Standards and legal framework in importing organic granular fertiliser or they will be rejected once again.

Farmers in Sri Lanka heavily depend on fertilisers for the cultivation of crops. The sowing season of “Maha” has already underway but many Sri Lankan farmers are yet to start cultivation as they are still waiting for organic fertilisers to be provided to them. Amidst rising demand for fertiliser, Sri Lanka has got the batch of chemical inputs needed for farming from India.

Vessel carrying contaminated Chinese fertilisers renamed in a bid to enter Sri Lanka

After Sri Lanka raised reservations about the quality of fertiliser shipment, the vessel carrying the consignment, Hippo Spirit, appeared to sail back to China. However, it changed its course to Singapore before changing its course back to Sri Lanka, without returning to China.

Attempts were also made to rechristen the container, presumably to pull the wool over the eyes of Sri Lankan authorities into accepting the same consignments. The vessel changed its name from Hippo Spirit to Seiyo Explorer, which was confirmed by the same IMO number shared by both the ships.

IMO number is a seven-digit number that is unique for every vessel. It is linked to its hull, irrespective of changes of names, flags, or owners. The vessel is currently at 61 nautical miles away from Weligama.

Chhattisgarh: Congress MLA wants sedition charges against Bilaspur collector for sending ‘ordinary invitation cards’ to politicians

Shailesh Pandey, the Congress MLA from Bilaspur seat has demanded Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel to charge Bilaspur district collector Dr Saransh Mittar with sedition for “neglecting and disrespecting” elected representatives by sending them an ordinary invitation card to attend the state foundation day programme held on November 1.

The MLA was particularly peeved as he was not invited as a guest of the Rajyotsav (statehood celebrations) programme with a special invitation.

In the Congress-ruled Chhattisgadh, such a weird demand of a ruling party MLA doesn’t sound unusual since the Congress-ruled government has been accused of misusing sedition charges against political opponents and media persons.

The MLA in the letter sent to the chief minister on November 2 has demanded immediate removal of Bilaspur collector alleging the officer often insults MLAs of the ruling Congress. “He (collector) sent ordinary invitation cards to elected representatives to attend the programme like one given to ordinary people. He has insulted your government, people and public representatives elected by people. This act of collector comes under the category of sedition hence I request you to remove and charge him for sedition,” MLA said.

In the letter, the MLA has lamented that many elected representatives like Zilla Panchayat president, Municipality Chairperson, and other local body leaders were given ‘just ordinary invitation cards like common people’ and not specially invited. He called this an insult against elected representatives.

For the Rajyotsav event in Bilaspur, the district administration had printed the name of the Parliamentary secretary Indrashah Mandavi as the chief guest and no other name was mentioned as a guest. Indrashah Mandavi is the Congress MLA from Mohla-Manpur assembly seat. While the statehood programme was celebrated in all districts of Chhattisgarh, the MLA said that the state government sent the list of persons who were to be chief guests. He said that in other districts, the concerned district collector invited elected representatives with full honour as the guest of the programme. But Bilaspur district collector sent an ordinary invitation to them ‘like common people’.

A Raipur-based journalist said that the possibility can’t be ignored that Shailesh Pandey was deliberately ignored for the programme since he is close to health minister TS Singh Deo who wants to head the state as chief minister for the remaining two and half years.

“But this also exposes classic hypocrisy of the Congress on the issue of sedition law. During elections, Congress speaks against sedition law and promises to scrap there this. But in the Congress-ruled government, there is no restrain on the use of sedition law. Even in minor cases, which was not even an offence, people were booked under sedition law. In June 2019, a person Mangelal Agarwal from Rajnandgaon was arrested under sedition charges after he wrote a post on social media site about the poor condition of the electricity in Chhattisgadh,” said the journalist.

LAWDA no more: Jammu & Kashmir govt renames the lakes and waterways development body name

On November 3, Jammu and Kashmir government renamed Lakes and Waterways Development Authority (LAWDA) as Jammu and Kashmir Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA). The order issued by the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory read, “In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 3 of the Jammu and Kashmir Development Act, 1970 (Act XIX of 1970), the Government hereby rename Lakes and Waterways Development Authority constituted vide notification SRO 109 of 1997 dated 27.03.1997 as Jammu and Kashmir Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) for all purposes of the said Act.”

The acronym, LAWDA, has been subject of mockery over the Internet for years because it sounds like an abusive term for genitalia.

Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi did not like LAWDA

From time to time, the acronym of the previous name of Lakes and Waterways Development Authority, i.e. LAWDA, had brought waves of trolling towards the government body whenever it made to headlines, even for good reasons. The governing body is responsible for taking care of the water bodies in Jammu and Kashmir, including Dal Lake.

In October 2021, after yet another wave of trolling over social media platforms, demand to change the name of the government authority came from Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi. In a tweet, he had said, “Although not a big fan of name change, I’ll do a Bhajpa here and request the J&K authorities to change / slightly amend the name of Lakes and Waterways Development Authority.”

Interestingly, the website of the organisation did not use the word LAWDA, it refers to the organisation as JK LDA. However, for some reason, the Facebook page of the organisation calls itself LAWDA, even though its username is JKLDA. It was also used in official communications for example, some tender notices uploaded on the website use this acronym, while in some others, LDA is used.

The festival of worshipping dogs and crows – All you need to know about Kukur Tihar festival celebrated by Gorkhas and Nepali Hindus

On the second day of the five-day Hindu festival Tihar, Nepali Hindus and Gorkhas worship dogs to celebrate the animal’s connection to the fearless Bhagwan Bhairav. On this day, worshipers decorate dogs with garlands and Tilak. They are fed with their favourite food including meat, milk, eggs etc. On this day, it is forbidden to indulge in any disrespectful act against the dogs. The festival is widely popular amongst Gorkhas. Canine officers and stray dogs are honoured on this day.

The mythological connection

There are two mythological connections associated with the festival. It is believed that the dog is the ride of Bhagwan Bhairav, and it is worshipped to please God. According to legends, Bhagwan Yama, the God of Death, has two dogs named Shyama and Sharvara who guard the doors of hell. By worshipping the dogs during Kukur Tihar, the worshipers believe they will save them from the tortures of hell. It also helps in seeing death in a positive manner.

One story from Mahabharata also mentions the importance of the bond between dogs and humans. According to the story, a dog had accompanied the Pandavas on the journey to Heaven. All Pandavas, including Draupadi, could not complete the journey and only Yudhishthira and the dog reached the doors of Heaven. When Indra Dev came to receive him, Yudhishthira asked to let the dog accompany him to Heaven. Indra Dev refused, stating everyone cannot attain Heaven.

Yudhishthira refused to go to Heaven, saying the dog had been with him thick and thin. He cannot abandon the dog at the end of his life. Pleased by the selflessness and dedication to the sense of righteousness under any circumstance, the dog was allowed to enter Heaven. The story stated that the dog was actually the God of Dharma himself who showed his true form after Yudhishthira stood strong on his vow to take the dog with him to Heaven. It is suggested it was Bhagwan Yama in the form of a dog accompanying Yudhishthira to Heaven.

Kaag Tihar – The day when crows are worshipped

During the festival, crows and ravens are also worshipped as they are considered to be messengers of Bhagwan Yama. They are worshipped on the first day of the Tihar festival, also known as Kaag Tihar. Food including meat and grains are offered to crows during the festival.

Crows hold an important role in Hinduism. They are also considered to be the messengers of Pitra or the ancestors. They are worshipped and offered food during Shrada, the 16-day long Hindu festival where Hindus across the world pay homage to their ancestors.

Dogs might have been first domesticated in Nepal

The bond between dogs and people of Nepal goes back to the point where dogs were first domesticated by humans. According to ABC Science, a genetic study suggested that the dogs might have been domesticated for the first time in Central Asia, precisely in modern-day Nepal and Mongolia.

An international team led by Adam Boyko at Cornell University studied over 185,800 genetic markers in around 4,600 purebred dogs belonging to 165 breeds along with over 540 village dogs. The study was conducted across 38 countries. The scientists deemed it as the “largest-ever survey of worldwide canine genetic diversity.” The scientists had said, “We find strong evidence that dogs were domesticated in Central Asia, perhaps near present-day Nepal and Mongolia.”

Dogs played a vital role during the Nepal earthquake rescue operations

Dogs were the unsung heroes of the rescue operations of the devastating earthquake that hit Nepal in 2015. During the rescue operations, special canine units were deployed that helped in spotting surviving victims under the rubble.

Ayodhya, 2 November 1990: This Diwali, let’s remember the Karsevaks who laid down their lives for Ram Temple

2 November 2021 marked the 31st anniversary of the day when horrifying brutality was meted out on thousands of Karsevaks and Hindu devotees who had gathered at the then disputed Babri structure site to reclaim the Janmabhoomi(birthplace) of Lord Rama.

It was the result of the sacrifice made by them on 2 November 1990 that fuelled the protests for reclamation of Lord Rama’s birthplace and culminated into the felling of the controversial structure in Ayodhya more than 2 years later, on December 6, 1992, when thousands of karsevaks scaled the walls of the Babri structure brought it to ground.

However, it took another 27 agonising years for Hindus to win the decades long dispute over the ownership of the disputed land in Ayodhya. In 2019, the Supreme Court of India put an end to the long legal struggle and awarded the land to the Hindus, paving the way for the construction of a bhavya(magnificent) Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

Nevertheless, the day, November 2, holds special significance for pious Hindu devotees who view it as a tipping point in the long and arduous struggle to reclaim the abode of Ram Lalla. This year, the day coincided with Dhanteras, the first day of the Diwali festivities. Also known as the festival of lights, Diwali marks the homecoming of Lord Rama after spending 14 years in exile. On this day every year, millions of Hindus around the world adorn their homes with diyas and lights to celebrate the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya.

What happened on 2 November 1990?

On 2 November 1990, orders from the powers that be to then IG SMP Sinha were clear.

It was 9 am on the auspicious day of Kartik Purnima when Hindu saints and thousands of karsevaks, comprising also of women and elderly people, resumed their march towards the Ram Janmabhoomi site where the disputed structure then stood. The security forces, who were instructed to stop the Hindus from reaching the site, lined up on the road to block the way.

Whenever the security personnel tried to impede the Hindu devotees, they would sit there and start chanting the name of Lord Ram and reciting Bhajans (religious songs). They touched the feet of the security personnel, deployed to prevent them from marching ahead. Each time they did this the security personnel would move back and the karsevaks would move forward. Though unarmed, the karsevaks remained undeterred.

This kept happening in a loop until the IG passed orders and the police personnel sprung to action. Tear gas shells were fired, lathis were rained at the karsevaks, but the resolute Ram Bhakts neither counter-attacked nor did they agitate or falter. Suddenly the security personnel started responding by opening fire. Many Hindu devotees were targeted and gunned down. It’s believed that the security personnel hunted and targeted Hindus in every lane and bylane leading to the Ram Janmabhoomi and within no time the streets converted into a war zone. The security personnel neither offered help to the injured nor allowed anyone else to help them.

The police did not have any prior written order for firing. In fact, the district magistrate had signed the order after the police had carried out the firing. No karsevak was shot in the leg. All of them were shot in the head and chest. Which means that the security personnel had fired with an intention to kill and not injure.

The struggle for the Ram Janmabhoomi has claimed the lives of countless Karsevaks
Media headline in November 1990, stating that indiscriminate firing was ordered at the Karsevaks

Kothari brothers, the face of Ram Janmabhoomi movement, perished in the 2 November 1990 onslaught

It was in this carnage that the heroic Kothari brothers, who later became the face of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, attained martyrdom. They had gathered in front of Hunumangarhi, a stone’s throw away from the disputed structure that was eventually demolished later. As the protesters sat on the road in protest and started singing religious hymns.

Out of the blue, security personnel at the behest of the then CM Mulayam Singh, started firing at the crowd and chased karsevaks across the area. Many people died from head wounds. There was a stampede at the Saryu Bridge, which killed a number of people. According to eye-witnesses, the Kothari brothers had mounted a saffron flag atop the Babri structure, but however, fell prey to the brutality meted out at the Karsevaks.

The death toll of karsevaks and Hindu devotees

The incident which occurred in Ayodhya, almost 30 years back, left an indelible mark in the history of India. After the brutal massacre, different media houses had come up with different numbers of those killed on November 2, 1990. In a report published the next day by Jansatta, the number of dead karsevaks was stated to be 40. It had also stated that 60 others were badly wounded in the incident while it could not give the exact number of people who escaped with minor injuries. Meanwhile, a journalist who was on the spot during the incident, reported the death toll to be 45.

The Hindi daily Dainik Jagran had said that 100 people had died in the police firing, while Daily Aaj said this number was 400. Though the official report on the incident concluded that 16 people had been killed in the firing, however, the fact remained that the number was potentially far higher. The incident was even compared to independent India’s Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

‘Mullah Mulayam’ stands by his decision, says security forces could have killed more if required

Mulayam Singh Yadav earned the sobriquet ‘Mullah Mulayam’ by the Muslim community for issuing orders to fire at karsevaks. In 2017, the Samajwadi Party patriarch stood by his decision of asking the forces to fire upon the karsevaks marching towards Ayodhya. If this wasn’t enough, adding insult to the injury, Mulayam Singh Yadav quipped, “If more people were required to be killed for the sake of the country’s unity and integrity, the security forces would have done it.”
