Kerala: SFI leaders involved in stabbing of University College student absconding, former student narrates hooliganism of SFI members

On Friday morning, a student of the University College in Thiruvananthapuram was stabbed in the chest allegedly by the members of the college SFI unit. The police have said that the attack was a planned move. The accused are now absconding the police.

The investigation of the incident

Allegedly 20 members of the SFI were involved in the attack. In the FIR it has been mentioned that two SFI leaders, Naseem and Amal, held Akhil while SFI college unit chief Sivaranjith stabbed him. Witnesses say that the knife used belonged to Naseem. They also said that several SFI workers who were not part of the college were also involved in the attack. Murder charges have been slapped on six people in total. The accused have gone in hiding after having spent nearly an hour on the campus after the stabbing incident.

Students have revealed that the SFI union office in University College was known as the ‘torture room’. In some reports, the room was named as the ‘assault room’. Police searched the rooms after students claimed that weapons were kept in these rooms. However, police have claimed that they haven’t found any weapons in the room.

Contrary to the claims made by the police, Janam TV had visited the union room and revealed that room indeed had weapons. The room had also bottles of alcohol as well as other signs that indicate the people have been living in the room.

Former student narrates her ordeal

Meanwhile, Nikhila, a former student of University College, came out and narrated the ordeal she faced at the hands of SFI members. She had earlier attempted suicide before deciding to leave the campus. She was fed up with the hostile and violent campus ambience. “SFI hooliganism is rife at the University College. If the principal had taken a more stringent stance, such instances would not have happened”, she said.

Speaking to reporters Nikhila claimed that the SFI was running the college and even the principal was afraid to take action against them. According to her, everyone who joins the college should become a member of SFI. If students refused to do so they would be threatened. SFI members have threatened Nikhila that she would be prevented from writing her exams and prevent her from studying if she didn’t cooperate. The members have also claimed to have given TC to several such female students who had resisted.

Nikhila said that SFI members would ensure that every student would attend their protest marches. She complied in the beginning. Protests were repeatedly held in the college, sometimes even at midnight. She claimed that they were made to participate despite not having any food.

She claimed that if students need to go home or do something in the college they always had to take the permission of SFI. Their lives were controlled by them. Ragging of first-year students was a common occurrence in the college. However, students who worked closely with the union were exempted from strict control.

For Nikhila the situation escalated when SFI members had called upon all female students. Just a day before the exams, female students were required to paint a poster. Angry at the situation, Nikhila had updated her WhatsApp status refusing to cooperate with them. Her classmates took a screenshot and sent it to the SFI unit members. On the next day, she was prevented from having her food and was asked to meet a unit member. If she didn’t so, she would be prevented from writing her exams.

The unit member had threatened her that she would need to adjust to the demands of the SFI if she wished to continue her studies. Several of her friends had also given up supporting fearing that they would be reprimanded. Finally, she had decided to change her college.

In another interview, Nikhila had also claimed that college authorities had never acted against SFI members. Unit members were free to bring a textbook or mobile to exam centres and copy from them. Unit members also lived in the unit room. Alcohol and drugs were used in the room.

On prime accused Naseem

Nikhila had claimed that Naseem used the college SFI union room for hiding from the police in last December-January. Naseem was previously wanted for assaulting two traffic policemen. He had absconded for over a month before surrendering.

According to some reports, Naseem is close to the Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan. Reports say that when he had surrendered for the police assault case, he was fed with chicken biryani and Coca-Cola.

Reportedly, the names of the two accused prime Shivaranjith and Naseem were also found to be on the PSC rank list. Both are awaiting a call to become police constables. This is despite the well known criminal background of Naseem.

The Student Federation of India (SFI) is the student body of the ruling CPM party. Naseem is the prime accused of the incident in which SIF members had stabbed Akhil. They had a dispute over the issue of singing in the canteen. Akhil is in a stable condition and has submitted his statement to the police. Students of all political affiliations have come out in protest against the SFI. The college unit has been subsequently disbanded.

Earlier, the SFI had previously put up a derogatory poster of Sabarimala’s Lord Ayyappa at the Kerelaverma College in Thrissur.

Aspiring model Khushi Parihar murdered over ‘friendship with other men’, live-in partner Ashraf Sheikh arrested

Aspiring model Khushi Parihar was found murdered with her head and face smashed on Saturday morning at Chatarpur farms, around 50 KMs away from the Nagpur city. A passerby detected her body allegedly disposed of in the pit. The local police quickly rushed to the spot after being informed of the body. Ashraf Sheikh, Khushi’s boyfriend and live-in partner have been detained by the police with regard to her murder. He has allegedly confessed to the crime.

Khushi Parihar, in her 20s, was an upcoming model who had participated in various beauty pageants held in Nagpur. She was allegedly in a live-in relationship with Ashraf Sheikh, son of an alleged drug peddler in Nagpur. The police have registered a case of murder and destruction of evidence against Ashraf. According to police, Ashraf killed Khushi following a quarrel with her over her friendship with other men.

Khushi’s body was found with her face disfigured, possibly with heavy stones. Looking at the nifty outfit on the body, the police suspected that the victim might be from urban areas. Soon, they started inquiring about missing person reports in the city’s various police stations. The police achieved a major breakthrough with the tattoos on the victim’s body. ‘Khushi’ was tattooed on her back while a picture of a crown with ‘Queen’ written underneath was on her chest. The third tattoo was that of ‘Ashu’ in one of her arms. The tattoos played a crucial role in determining her identity. The police verified her Facebook account and photos of her tattoos uploaded by on her account to establish her identity.

Khushi had uploaded many photos with her boyfriend Ashraf on her Facebook account. With the help of local police, Kelvad police arrested Ashraf. Ashraf had lied to the police that he was with Khushi till 9 PM on Friday night. However, when the location of their mobile phones was tracked, it came to the light that Ashraf was with Khushi till late in the night on Friday.

Ashraf has allegedly confessed to the crime while his interrogation by the police. He admitted that the duo had gone to a dhaba in Kalamna late in the night where they had drinks and dinner. From there, they went towards Padhura where they had a scuffle over Khushi’s friendship with other men, leading to her alleged murder.

Ashraf has also informed the police that he was supposed to get married to Khushi in the next 10 days. He had recently rented an apartment in Nagpur’s Gittikhadan neighbourhood where he lived with Khushi Parihar. He also claimed that he had gifted a mobile and a car to Khushi.

Rahul Gandhi is still the president of Congress since Rahul Gandhi is yet to accept Rahul Gandhi’s resignation. Here is how

Although Rahul Gandhi formally resigned from the post of Congress President on 3rd July, ending speculations for more than a month, he continues to call the shots in the party. This was confirmed when the All India Congress Committee announced the appointment of several office bearers of the party in Maharashtra.

Yesterday the AICC announced the appointment of Balasaheb Thorat as Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee along with 5 working presidents. A press release issued by AICC General Secretary says that the appointments were approved by the “Hon’ble Congress President”.

The party also announced that “Hon’ble Congress President” has approved the appointment of K.C. Padvi as Congress Legislative Party Leader for Maharashtra. The Congress president also made new appointments to several committees in the party in Maharashtra. All those appointments were made yesterday.

After the resignation of Rahul Gandhi, there were reports that Motilal Vora will be made the Interim President till the time a full-time President is elected by the party. Although the media had appointed Vora as the interim president, there was no such formal announcement from the party, and Vora himself had said that he has not received any such formal communication from the party.

As the appointments have been made by the “Congress President”, and not by an “Interim President” of the party, this means that the proposals for appointments were approved by Rahul Gandhi only.

It may be noted that although Congress President Rahul Gandhi has resigned from the post, it becomes effective only after it is accepted by the Congress Working Committee, therefore he remains the party president. A senior Congress leader has confirmed the same according to an NDTV report, who has said that Rahul Gandhi remains the party president because the Congress Working Committee is yet to accept his resignation. Although it is almost certain that CWC will have to accept the resignation this time, the apex committee of the party has not met yet to take up the matter. When Rahul Gandhi had announced his resignation for the first time in the month of May, the CWC had rejected the same at that time.

The Congress Working Committee, which is headed by the party president, is likely to meet in the next week to decide the leadership issue. According to reports, the meeting has been delayed due to the ongoing political crisis in Karnataka. When the CWC meets, probably it will formally announce the resignation of Rahul Gandhi, and also decide on an interim president to lead the party during one of the worst periods for the grand old party. Therefore, until the CWC headed by Rahul Gandhi accepts Rahul Gandhi’s resignation formally, Rahul Gandhi remains the president of the Congress party.

World Cup Final Preview, England v New Zealand: Who will become the new champion?

Two Teams, a World Cup Final and a new champion, that’s how Sunday is going to be. England has been into a World Cup finals three times before this one, and one of them was in 1979 at their home turf, yet they couldn’t win. Can they finally win? On the other hand, New Zealand will be playing its second World Cup Final, the first one was a nightmare for them, would be hoping to win this one and make the country proud.

England started the tournament with a bang; they beat South Africa in the opening game with their excellent display of all-round performance. They lost to Pakistan in the second game, but then dominated the next three opposition and was almost sure to reach the semis. A loss to Sri Lanka and then Australia made it difficult for them to qualify for the knock out stage, but the team drastically improved their game and won against India and New Zealand to book a place in the semi-final.

The English team displayed an extraordinary show against their arch-rivals Australia in the semi-final at Edgbaston. A lot has changed in this team since their early exit of World Cup 2015. They are favorites to win the title, and at Lord’s, it will be all blue on Sunday.

New Zealand has started the tournament exceptionally well, as they won three in three. Their fourth game against India washed out, but then again they won two in two, which secured their place in the semis. However, they started losing matches after that, first to Pakistan, then against Australia and England. This put them on the 4th number on the points table and had to face the number team of the World Cup, India.

In the semi-final, New Zealand won the match when everyone thought it would be a cakewalk for India. Their pacers derailed India’s top order and pulled the game in their favor. They are not favorite to win the title against the host nation but if they do it will a great thing for New Zealand cricket.

Players to watch out for

Jason Roy – The English opener has batted with a superb strike rate and destroyed all the bowling attacks of the tournament. If he plays well, England would be off to a flyer in the finals. A dream of every English fan to see them lifting the trophy would be a lot depending on how he starts the innings.

Kane Williamson – He needs to play the part of sheet-anchor in the middle overs as the openers are not able to give their best. He is also on the verge of breaking Tendulkar’s record of most runs in a single World Cup edition. His calm mind has won many games in the tournament. If he wins here, it will be a great tribute to his former Kiwi captain McCullum who led the team in 2015 final.

Jharkhand: Hindu organisations allege bias as girl is arrested for Facebook post on Tabrez Ansari death based on FIR by Islamia committee

Acting on a complaint by the Anjuman Islamia Committee in Pithoria district, Ranchi, over a Facebook post on the Tabrez Ansari death, the Jharkhand police have today arrested a girl named Richa Bharti.

In the FIR filed in Pithoria police station, the members of the Islamia committee alleged that a girl named, Richa Bharti had posted an ‘objectionable’ Facebook post over Tabrez Ansari’s death. She had allegedly made comments hurting the ‘religious sentiments’ of the Muslim community. Richa is a graduation part-three student.

Following the complaint, the Jharkhand police immediately sprung to action and arrested the girl within two hours and sent her to jail.

Tabrez Ansari’s death:

Tabrez Ansari, a 24-year-old man from Jharkhand, was allegedly, brutally beaten by a mob in Jharkhand on the 18th June on the accusation of theft. He had died on 22nd in police custody allegedly of cardiac arrest.

According to the police, people had gotten into a fight with Ansari on 18th June who was accused of trying to steal a bike. After police got information about the same, they reached the spot and rescued him. Police had also recovered the stolen bike and some other items. The Police gave him first aid, subjected him to a medical examination and then submitted the report to the Court, only then he was sent to jail. Three days later, his health deteriorated and he died. Therefore, the Police says it is wrong to claim he died due to mob lynching.

Recent reports on Tabrez Ansari’s death:

Recent reports have confirmed that the 24-year-old died due to the negligence on the part of police and doctors. Two police officers have already been suspended in the case and action would be taken against the erring doctors, the investigating team said in its report.

Moreover, the investigation team set up by the district administration had concluded that Tabrez Ansari could have died of cardiac arrest. Police and doctors had maintained mob lynching not cause of death.

What Hindu organisations are saying about Richa Bharti’s arrest

This arrest of Richa Bharti over her Facebook post has, evoked discord, rage and distress amongst various Hindu outfits.

Many people belonging to different Hindu outfits, including members of VHP, RSS, Bajrang Dal and district office bearers of Hindu Jagaran Manch approached the Pithoria police station on July 13, 2019, and staged protests. Claiming that there was nothing ‘objectionable’ about the Facebook post the protestors demanded Richa Patel’s immediate release. They also demanded strict action against the Pithoria police.

The protestors alleged that the police has been biased and have not investigated the case properly. They alleged that the Pithoroa police have acted in haste without proper fact-finding.

The Hindu protestors claimed that if the girl has made religious comments in her Facebook post the people of the Muslim community opposing the post have also made equally objectionable comments on the girl’s religion in its response. In such a case, when both the parties have hurt each other religious sentiments then why such partial, one-sided action had been taken, questioned the protestors, who demanded Richa’s immediate release.

It would be interesting to note here that Mumbai police, on the other hand, had taken no action against the failed actor-turned rogue Ajaz Khan who had recently resorted to taunting Mumbai Police after they filed an FIR against TikTok ‘celebrities’ for propagating revenge over Tabrez Ansari’s death.

Meanwhile, the unfortunate death of this youth named Tabrez Ansari in Jharkhand has led to several incidences of violence.

Incidents of violence following Tabrez Ansari’s death:

On July 7, protest meetings carried out by a group of Muslim organisations under the banner of Muttahida Muslima Mahaz (MMM) yesterday in Ranchi, Jharkhand against the alleged lynching of Tabrez Ansari in Saraikela district of the state turned violent resulting in mounting tension in the area. The protestors reportedly vandalised a bus of Central Institute of Psychiatry (CIP) at Rajendra Chowk creating panic among the passengers.

According to reports, a boy named Vivek Srivastava was brutally stabbed by the mob protestors. Another one was also beaten up in the night when the two boys were passing by on a bike.

On June 27, it was reported how some members of Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM party had been threatening the villagers of rape, loot and violence over the unfortunate death of Tabrez Ansari.

Many more such incidents of violence, following Tabrez Ansari’s death, where stones were pelted, buses and houses set ablaze, police attacked, have also been reported from Meerut and Agra in the past.

Nevertheless, rural SP Ashutosh Shekhar and ASP Amit Renu reached the Pithoria police station and have assured that all the arguments made by the protestors would be considered. If the officer on duty, Vinod Ram, is found guilty, appropriate action would be taken against him, assured the SP.

They further said that the police would also investigate the Facebook post. They assured that if found guilty appropriate action would be taken against the complainants.

Navjot Singh Sidhu resigns as Punjab minister, sent resignation letter to Congress President Rahul Gandhi on 10th June

In a letter that has now been made public by controversial politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Congressman has written to ‘Congress President’ Rahul Gandhi that he is resigning as a Minister from the Punjab Cabinet.

Interestingly, Navjot Singh Sidhu has tendered his resignation on 10th June to ‘Congress President’ Rahul Gandhi. Ideally, Navjot Singh Sidhu should have addressed his resignation letter as Minister of Punjab Cabinet either to Captain Amarinder Singh who is the Chief Minister of Punjab or the Governor. It is unclear if he did that and why he chose to resign to Rahul Gandhi in the first place.

Sidhu has tweeted that he will be sending his resignation letter to Captain Amarinder Singh too. However, one wonders why he would be resigning to the Chief Minister now when he had resigned to the Congress President a month ago and why the letter did not go to the CM in the first place.

It is also interesting that the resignation letter was written by Sidhu to Rahul Gandhi a month ago, on 10th June 2019. It would seem like Rahul Gandhi kept the letter in abeyance despite resigning as the President of the party on 6th July 2019.

On 6th July, Rahul Gandhi had posted a four-page resignation letter, full of contradictions, on Twitter reiterating his decision to step down from the post of Congress president, and also taking responsibility for the election results.

In the letter, Rahul Gandhi says that he is taking responsibility for the party’s bad performance, where he admits that the party needs new leadership that could lead the fight against BJP and the RSS. However, the second half of the same letter he hints that the 2019 Lok Sabha elections were not free and fair.

Amethi police confirm viral video showing Dalit man being beaten up by Muslim men, 2 arrested

A video showing a man being mercilessly beaten up by a group of Muslim men has gone viral on social media. The Twitter user who shared the video claimed that a Dalit man was beaten up by men from the Muslim community in Amethi.

Following the video, the Amethi police, yesterday, released a sound byte in which an officer in-charge confirmed the incident.

He is heard saying that in the incident which transpired on June 21, 2019, in Jayas district in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, a Dalit man named, Shashank Padam Bhusan Sonkar was mercilessly beaten up by people of ‘another community’. Shashank’s brother and his wife also suffered injuries in the brawl. It is being claimed that the victim was opposing molestation of his sister when the people of the Muslim community attacked him and started beating him up.

The police confirm that on the basis of the victim’s wife’s complaint a case against the miscreants had been registered under IPC sections, 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (Punishment for criminal intimidation) and the SC/ST Act. Two arrests have also been made so far, confirmed inspector Tiloi in the sound byte.

He further confirms that the police are investigating the case and perpetrators would be punished.

Many such incidents of atrocities and discrimination against Dalits by men from the Muslims community have previously also come to the fore. Yesterday we reported how the Dalit community had approached the police in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh against caste-based discrimination by Muslim barbers in the area.

Last month, it was reported how a Muslim mob had entered a temple in Ghasauli village, Meerut, and beat up a group of Dalit men who had put up loudspeakers in the temple for playing devotional songs. The Muslim community had objected to the loudspeaker on temple premises, which is near a mosque after the men from Dalit community put them up.

Later, the mob attacked the temple and beat up the Dalit men with lathis and sticks. They also reportedly attacked them with a sharp object and even started pelting stones. Over half a dozen people inside the temple were injured and the communal tensions escalated.

In February also, reports had emerged wherein a minor conflict between some people belonging to the Dalit and the Muslim communities escalated into communal violence in Durveshpur village of Sardhana, Uttar Pradesh.

BJP’s Mukul Roy sounds the war bugle, says 107 MLAs, mostly from TMC, set to join BJP ‘very soon’

West Bengal is turning out to be the state to watch out for as the political battle seems to be simmering post BJP’s new-found foothold in the state. Mukul Roy, BJP leader, has now claimed that 107 MLAs, majority of whom are from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are all set to join BJP ‘very soon’.

He said that 107 MLAs belong mostly the the TMC, but a few are from Congress and CPIM. He also asserted that most people are sick of Mamata Banerjee’s rule and are fed up with the way things are functioning.

BJP had recently won 18 out of the 42 seats in West Bengal during the Lok Sabha 2019 elections. Since then, 6 TMC MLAs have joined BJP and one each from Congress and CPIM have switched the the saffron party.

After dwindling electoral fortunes, Mamata Banerjee had hired Prashant Kishore to improve the image of her party and Kishore had recently announced that his aim was to get 5 lakh youngsters to join the party.

Last month, there were speculations that TMC supremo Banerjee, spooked by BJP’s implausible inroads in West Bengal, had decided to hire services of renowned poll strategist Prashant Kishor almost two years ahead of the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections.

After reports confirming that poll strategist had agreed to work for TMC started doing the rounds, JD(U) had distanced itself from the Kishor. JD(U) had on June 7, disowned Kishor, merely eight months after inducting him as the party’s National Vice-President.

According to reports, however, Kishor is unlikely to be the face of TMC campaign in the state. His team is specifically looking into the reasons behind the shift of vote bank from Left to BJP and the region-specific reasons behind BJP’s vote share increase in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election.

Here is OpIndia’s list of 11 players who stole the show this World Cup 2019

The World Cup is about to come to its conclusion, and there would be a new World Champion on Sunday. Individual players gave their best to help the team to win the cup. So if one has to make a World Cup XI of 2019, who all can be part of that?

Picking an XI is always a personal choice, and there are still few players who missed the list, and few make to the list. Here is OpIndia’s World Cup XI:

  1. David Warner

The Australian opener scored 647 runs in the World Cup, the second-most by any in this World Cup. He also scored the most hundreds (3) after Rohit Sharma. He can hit boundaries from the first ball of the innings.

2. Rohit Sharma

He is the top performer of the World Cup, most runs and hundreds in the tournament. The perfect partner for Warner too, a left-hand, right-hand combination and someone who takes time to get set. Once Rohit is set, we all know what he can do with his magic willow.

3. Joe Root

England’s Mr dependable at number 3, first English batsman to score 500 more runs in a World Cup edition. In the case of the early fall of a wicket, he can steady the innings. Can bowl some off spins too.

4. Kane Williamson

The most consistent number 4 for New Zealand, led his team to the World Cup final. Captain of this team, bats as per the situation. Not only with batting, but he also has to look after the strategies for the team.

5. Shakib Al Hasan

The best all-rounder of World Cup 2019 and the most definite contender to win the player of the tournament. He batted at number 3 for Bangladesh, but for the team’s combination, he will play at number 5. His slow left-arm spin is a bonus for the team.

6. Ben Stokes

With 381 runs and seven wickets, the second-best all-rounder of the tournament, perfect for number 6. One of the best fielder too, the ‘3-dimensional players’ in a real sense.

7. Alex Carey

Three hundred seventy-five runs as the wicket-keeper in the competition, the most by any. Not only he impressed with his batting but also with his keeping, 20 dismissals in World Cup 2019. Topping the list in both the charts, he is an automatic selection for the XI.

8. Mitchell Starc

The highest wicket-taker in any edition of the World Cup. Starc has shown incredible consistency; he was the highest wicket-taker in the previous World Cup too. His yorkers are his biggest strength, and he is the perfect partner for Bumrah.

9. Jofra Archer

England’s most significant find of the tournament, they picked him over David Willey, and he proved the selectors his worth. Nineteen wickets in the World Cup before the finals, most by any English bowler in any World Cup edition. He is super quick with the ball and has bowled the maximum number of dot balls in the tournament (338).

10. Jasprit Bumrah

The number one ODI bowler can swing the ball both ways, keeping the batsman guessing. The most economical bowler of World Cup 2019. Imagine the situation for the batsmen when they have to face Starc and Bumrah in tandem. A treat to watch for the fans, maybe someday in IPL.

11. Imran Tahir

The oldest player of the competition, the genuine leg spinner in the team, took 11 wickets in the tournament. He also bowled the first over of the World Cup. And oh ah, yeah, his wild celebrations after taking a wicket, the best among the rest.

What will be your World Cup XI?
