Cricket World Cup preview – Bangladesh v Pakistan: Unrealistic task for Pakistan to reach the semis

Pakistan 2 points away from a semi-final spot but more importantly have to win the game by minimum 311 runs win to secure a place in the semis. They can only blame themselves for this situation. Bangladesh, which is out of the World Cup would be eyeing a win to end the World Cup on a good note.

Bangladesh had already won a World Cup game against Pakistan in 1999. That’s the only time the two teams played against each other in the World Cup. Also, on paper, Bangladesh looks much stronger as a team than Pakistan. They have played excellent cricket and must be blaming the rain which didn’t let them have a match against Sri Lanka because of which they can’t think of semis now. They have been absolutely in top gear when it comes to batting. Their bowling is solid as well, so as their fielding. It shouldn’t be much difficult for them to beat Pakistan at this stage of the tournament.

Pakistan has an unrealistic task to secure a place in semis. They need to score a minimum of 400 runs to score batting first, and then they have to dismiss Bangladesh for less than 84 or score 350 and dismiss Bangladesh for 38 runs. If they bowl first, then they will have no chance. Their batting has led them down the most. Had they batted well against West Indies, Australia, and Afghanistan, they would have been placed at a better position in the points table with a healthy run rate.

Players to watch out

Shakib Al Hasan has scored 542 runs in World Cup, and he needs 132 runs to surpass Tendulkar’s record of 673 runs in a single World Cup edition. His bowling has helped the team as well, and he would be ready to take the Pakistani batters.

Babar Azam, the talented Pakistani batsman, has one last chance to show his class in this World Cup. He can smash as well as play like an anchor for Pakistan in the game, but sadly Pakistan would have no chance in the match if they bat second.

Supreme Court refuses to entertain a PIL filed by lawyer ML Sharma seeking cancellation of 2019 general elections

The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a PIL filed by lawyer Manohar Lal Sharma who had last month questioned the use of EVMs in elections and sought the cancellation of recently concluded Lok Sabha elections.

Justice Rohinton Nariman shrugged off Sharma’s request by expressing his surprise over Sharma’s frivolous appeal, “What are you asking for Mr Sharma? You want us to set aside the entire Lok Sabha elections?” Justice Nariman exclaimed.

Last month the SC had also squashed Manohar Lal’s urgent hearing plea in the case. Sharma had on June 13 approached the SC seeking its direction to conduct fresh Lok Sabha polls using ballot papers.

In his petition, Sharma had claimed that as per the Representation of Peoples (RP) Act, the election can only be held using the ballot papers, and it cannot use Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) to conduct the poll.

In December last year, advocate Manohar Lal Sharma, who is notorious for filling frivolous Public Interest Litigations (PIL) and earning court’s wrath and who had to pay fines several times, had come up with another petition against the Home Ministry, specifying which agencies can intercept electronic devices on people under surveillance for security reasons.

On December 20, 2018, the ministry of home affairs had issued a gazette order under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and Information Technology Rules 2009, which specified 10 investigating agencies which are authorized to monitor and intercept messages in computer devices. After the notification, opposition parties made a huge and cry alleging that the government has allowed the agencies to snoop on common citizens.

A careful reading of the order had, however, made it clear that the agencies are authorized to ‘snoop’ only on select cases of threat to integrity and security of the country, a threat to law and order and incitement to any cognizable offence.

Prior to this, Sharma was slapped with a fine of Rs 50000 by the SC while quashing a petition by the advocate against finance minister Arun Jaitley. He had alleged plundering of RBI reserves by the government to waive loans of some companies.

Reprimanding Sharma for the petition, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi had said that the day has come to ban him from filing PILs. The court made such remark due to the history of Sharma’s petitions. Before this, he was fined ₹50,000 and ₹25,000 by the court on two occasions in 2014 for wasting the court’s time with frivolous petitions.

On December 14, ML Sharma had lost another high profile petition, when the apex court rejected the plea for a court-monitored probe in the Rafale deal. Sharma was first to file a petition against the deal, who was later joined by others including Prashant Bhushan and Arun Shourie with similar petitions in the supreme court.

Sharma had also angered the Supreme Court for filing a PIL in the Unnao rape case. The court had asked if some relative of Sharma has been raped, as he was not connected with the case. Court had dismissed the petition saying PIL can’t be filed in a criminal case, questioning the locus of Sharma in the case.

ML Sharm has filed petitions in a range of issues like opposing Pratibha Patil’s candidature as president, against Ranbaxy, seeking to curb powers of ministers, against the movie Padmaavat, to know the detail on the disappearance of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose etc, all of which were dismissed by courts.

Kerala government orders judicial probe into the custodial death of financial agent after alleged police torture

Two weeks after the alleged custodial death of Rajkumar, a financial agent, in a cabinet meeting that was held today the Kerala government has finally ordered a judicial probe into the case. A commission has been set up which will submit a report within six months. Congress party have welcomed this move.

For the past few days, the opposition had come down heavily on the Pinarayi Vijayan government for the way it handled Rajkumar’s case. They had been demanding for a judicial probe. Yesterday, they staged a walkout to protest against the lack of seriousness on the part of the government.

Rajkumar was a financial agent from Idukki who arrested by the Nedumkandam police for suspected financial fraud on June 12. He was held in custody and allegedly tortured by the police. He was produced to court only four days later, after which he was remanded for judicial custody. On June 21, he was admitted to the Peermedu taluk hospital and declared dead soon after reaching.

His autopsy had revealed that he was definitely tortured. After the case gathered media attention, a few arrests have been made and several police officers have been transferred. Two senior police officers have been arrested after testifying to the prolonged torture and brutal interrogation of Rajkumar in police custody.

Yesterday in Thiruvananthapuram, Rajkumar’s mother Kasthuri conducted a protest march demanding for justice. The Rajkumar Action Council which had organised the protest demanded a CBI enquiry into the case. They also ordered action against several senior officers. The Kerela HC had also intervened and ordered a probe against a magistrate for sending a weak Rajkumar to judicial custody.

Video and Stats Highlight from Afghanistan v West Indies match

So Windies finishes off with a win just like they started their world cup campaign, in between they lost six games, with one called off due to rain while Afghanistan failed to win a single game in the tournament.

West Indies opted to bat first after winning the toss on a batting track at Leeds. Playing his last World Cup match, Chirs Gayle couldn’t do much with the bat and got out for just seven runs. After his dismissal, every West Indian batsman chipped with some useful runs. Lewis (58) and Hope (77) added 88 runs for the second wicket before Nabi caught Lewis off Rashid. The next four batsmen, Hetmyer (39), Pooran (58), Holder (45) and Brathwaite (14*) all scored at more than run a ball to finish the innings at 311 for 6 in 50 overs. The Afghan bowlers didn’t have a great day in the field, with everyone going over five an over.

Afghanistan had a lousy start too when they lost their captain and opener, Gulbadin Naib for just 5. However, Rahmat Shah (62) and the new batting sensation, Ikram Alikhil (86) added 133 runs in as many balls brought the hope in Afghan fans of winning the first game of the tournament. But once Ikram got out, 311 looked like a huge score to chase down. Even though Najibullah Zardan (31) and Asghar Afghan (40) added tried their best to chase, the task was too high with wickets falling at regular intervals. Afghanistan bowled out for 288 in 50 overs, for West Indies Brathwaite took four wickets while Roach took 3.

In the end, it was an easy win for West Indies, Afghanistan fought well but chasing a score above 300 was too much for them.

Video Highlights

STATS

  • Gayle has now 10,338 runs in ODI for West Indies, only Lara with 10,348 runs is ahead of him for most runs in ODI for West Indies.
  • Ikram Alikhil (18 years, 278 days) is the third youngest batsman, after Tamim Iqbal (17 years 362 days) and Mohd Ashraful (18 years, 234 days), to score a World Cup fifty.

We will try to score 500 runs says Pakistani cricket captain Sarfaraz Ahmed

In a press conference before their last World Cup match, Pakistani cricket captain Sarfaraz Ahmed said that the team would try to score 500 to qualify for the semis. Pakistan needs to win the match by a minimum of 312 runs to qualify for the semis, whether they score 400 or 500 or 600.

Pakistan needs to score a minimum of 400 runs to score batting first, and then they have to dismiss Bangladesh for less than 84 or score 350 and dismiss Bangladesh for 38 runs. If they bowl first then they will have no chance.

Sarfaraz Ahmed said,”Obviously we are here to win all the matches. We will do our best to win the last game as well. We will do our best, but we need to be realistic. If you score 600, 500 or 400 scores on a pitch, then you think you can get the other team out for 50? It will be tough, but we will still give it a try.

“The target is in front of us; there are no secrets that [we have] to score 500, 550, and then win by a 316-run margin. But if you look at the tournament then, realistically it is a 280-300 tournament.”

Sarfaraz also said that the turning point for their team in the World Cup was their loss against the mighty Australians. Pakistan was in winning a position at one stage in the match before Starc finished off their innings.

“The turning point was the loss against Australia. We were in a better position to win that game but lost the way in the middle overs. “And if you look at the pitches, they were not for free and open cricket, all the matches they were tough for batting, spin was there, and the ball was not coming on the bat.”

Currently, Pakistan is at the 5th position in Points table with 9 points; they need to win the match to have 2 points and also need to win an unrealistic margin to grab a place in the semis.

Gujarat Rajya Sabha bypolls: Congress MLAs return to Gandhinagar from ‘shivir’, voting underway

Voting for the Rajya Sabha bypolls in Gujarat is currently underway in Gandhinagar. The Congress MLAs who were whisked away to Banaskantha resort for a ‘shivir’ in a bid to stop horsetrading, returned to Gandhinagar this morning to cast their votes. The bypolls were necessitated after Smriti Irani and Amit Shah vacated their Rajya Sabha seats after they were elected from Amethi and Gandhinagar respectively.

Congress’ nervousness is understandable as close Sonia-aide and senior leader of the party, Ahmed Patel, had only barely managed to scrape through in the Rajya Sabha elections in 2017. Even then, the MLAs were taken to the resort in Karnataka owned by Karnataka MLA DK Shivakumar to prevent them from defecting to the BJP and cross-voting.

While Patel managed to retain his seat, Congress leadership in Gujarat received a lot of flak for abandoning the people who voted for them during one of the worst floods Gujarat faced even as they enjoyed luxury in Bengaluru. It drew more criticism as special chef was arranged for to provide Gujarati meals even as the rescue operations in Gujarat were carried out in their constituencies.

BJP has fielded External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Juglalji Thakor while Congress candidates are Chandrika Chudasma and Gaurav Pandya. The counting of votes will begin at 5 pm today.
