Pakistani activist invokes Manusmriti, blames it for the state of minorities in Islamic Republic of Pakistan

The Pakistan Army advertisement offering sanitisation jobs for Christians recently drew criticism on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, for being discriminatory towards the community.

Several Pakistani minorities right activists sprung to action fulminating against Pakistani Army’s accord and urging them to discard this discriminatory policy of recruiting only Christians for sanitisation work.

A member of National Lobbying Delegation for Minority Rights (NLDMR), Asif Aqeel took to Twitter to call out the Pakistani Army’s bias, but in doing so Aqeel invoked the Manusmriti. He claimed that the manuscripts of the Manusmriti have it that all Christians come from an ‘untouchable class’ and are expected to do such menial jobs. Shockingly, while expressing his disapproval for the Pakistani Army, Asif Aqeel spitefully divulges in insulting the ancient theology of Hindu religion.

Asif Aqeel was, responding to another human right activist, Kapil Dev, who on Tuesday, expressed his acrimony against the alleged prejudice against the Christian community.

Kapil Dev, another Pakistan based activist, questioned as to why such menial jobs are allocated to specifically Christians and not to members of other community. Irked by Pakistani advertisement the human right activist said, “I fail to understand as to why sanitary workers jobs are allocated for #Christians only? Why not for all? What if such jobs are for only Muslims in UK, USA or elsewhere in the West? You shit, and we clean. This should stop now. #EqualityForAll, Dev Tweeted along with pictures of the recent advertisement by the Pakistan Army.

A day prior, Asif Aqeel, too, appealed to the Pakistani Army Chief spokesperson, Major General Asif Ghafoor, to intervene and resolve the issue.

Run by several newspapers in Pakistan, the advertisement announced vacancies for the post of drivers, sepoys, tradesmen and sanitation workers in the Army’s Mujahid Force. However, the sanitisation work was specified for Christians only.

‘Cut money’ scandal: After Mamata Banerjee admits Trinamool members were taking bribes, public attacks party leaders

When Mamata Banerjee had remarked recently that ‘cut money’ taken by members of her own party, for implementing the welfare schemes of the government, ought to be returned to the public, she clearly had no idea that she was opening a Pandora’s box.

“I do not want to keep thieves in my party. If I take action they will join some other party. Some leaders are claiming 25 per cent commission for providing housing grants to the poor. This should stop immediately. Return the money if any of you have taken it,” Banerjee had said.

As a consequence of her remarks, people across the state are up in arms against the elected Trinamool representatives and leaders in the area, demanding the return of the money they had paid as bribes. The crowd forced Trinamool leaders to declare in writing that they will return the money. One even admitted that he had charged between Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000 from the beneficiaries of welfare schemes.

The controversy has now hit the Bengal Assembly with Opposition leaders demanding answers from the Chief Minister herself. An inquiry into the whole matter has also been demanded. “The issue needs to be probed by an inquiry commission and the state government should immediately set up one to investigate the matter. We also demand a statement from the chief minister on the floor of the House,” Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Abdul Mannan said.

Meanwhile, the state government has asked the Police to persuade people to lodge complaints in the matter. It believes that the agitating crowd will be pacified once the complaints are lodged and the Police starts acting on them.

“Once the complaints are lodged, the civil administration can inquire as these are mainly on schemes run by panchayats or civic bodies. In case of any anomaly, the police will lodge formal complaints and initiate action against the accused,” Gyanwant Singh, the ADG (law and order), said.

“If the culprits are booked, the ruling party will be able to send a message against corruption. Anger at the grassroots had damaged Trinamool in the general election,” an official told The Telegraph.

It appears that the move which Mamata Banerjee expected would work in her favour by augmenting her anti-corruption image has backfired massively. People have attacked the houses of Trinamool leaders over the matter and gheraoed them. In one such incident, the house of TMC deputy pradhan of Mangalkot in Burdwan, Binay Chakraborty, was attacked by the public, his car was vandalized and he was forced to flee and take shelter elsewhere.

In Birbhum, a pregnant TMC leader had to flee fearing for her life and that of her unborn child. Similar incidents have been reported elsewhere. The Trinamool, for its part, has branded it a BJP conspiracy.

“A campaign is going on to brand all public representatives as corrupt. But there are only one or two per cent of the public representatives of our party who have done this. The administration has taken action against them and will continue to do so in future,” said Municipal Affairs Minister Firhad Hakim.

The government has been forced to arrest numerous leaders from its own party as well. Sukesh Yadav, head of the Mahanandatola gram panchayat of Ratua in Malda, was arrested after he was accused of profiting Rs.1 crore from the Nirmal Bangla Mission for cleanliness. A TMC leader from Haldia was arrested on charges of corruption as well. “Milan Mondal was arrested as there were several cases pending against him, including some related to corruption,” a senior police officer told The Indian Express.

Meanwhile, Trinamool leader Trilochan Mukherjee has claimed to have returned around Rs.2.5 lakh of ‘cut money’ he had earned by extorting the beneficiaries of the NREGA scam.

The conspiracy of silence from expected quarters over the ‘Cut Money’ scandal is quite amazing. Here we have a Chief Minister who admitted that members of her party were indulging in corruption and robbing people of their money. People across the state are outraged and are attacking the homes of Trinamool leaders demanding that their money be returned. It’s complete anarchy.

Mamata Banerjee’s remarks were also an admission of the fact that her party has been running a ‘Syndicate Raj’ in the state where it was extremely difficult, if not entirely impossible, for people to benefit from welfare schemes without paying bribes. The chain of events that has followed since her statement also shows the anger that has been brewing among the people for quite a while.

Meanwhile, Trinamool leaders are blaming the BJP for the series of events which were initiated by the comments of their party supremo herself and because Trinamool leaders themselves were taking bribes. That Trinamool chose to blame the BJP instead of introspecting their own conduct over the years only goes on to show the arrogance and the sense of entitlement that has seeped within the ranks of the party. There’s also the incredulity that they could escape the consequences of their own action by pointing figures at others.

It ought to be remembered that Mamata Banerjee had blamed ‘outsiders’ and the BJP for the doctors’ strike as well which was initiated because the state police itself did not take any action to prevent mob violence by the Muslim community.

The rampant political murders, blatant minority appeasement, the ever deteriorating law and order situation, the Bengal health crisis and now the ‘cut money’ crisis, it appears Mamata Banerjee’s carefully constructed ‘Syndicate Raj’ is falling like a pack of cards. Her statement was meant to convey to the public that she was clean and intent on tackling the menace of corruption not only without but also within the ranks of her own party. However, the public was only angered even more.

Day after Reddy’s order, Chandrababu Naidu’s illegally built Rs 8-crore ‘Praja Vedika’ demolished overnight

In an overnight task, Andhra Pradesh’s former CM, Chandrababu Naidu’s Rs 8 crore ‘Praja Vedika’, which was built adjacent to his residence has been now demolished. The demolition had been ordered by Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy, who claimed the building was “illegal” and said all such structures would be destroyed.

The demolition took place after the Andhra High Court turned down a late night plea and adjourned the hearing by two weeks. The petition had alleged the demolition was a waste of public money.

Dozens of workers moved out furniture, air conditioners and other items before launching the demolition with JCB machines. A large number of policemen were deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

A minister in Reddy’s government has said Naidu’s residence could be torn down next.

Naidu, who was on holiday in Europe and only returned yesterday, said it was foolish to destroy government property. He also asked if the Chief Minister was planning to tear down statues of his father, former chief minister YS Rajasekhara Reddy, saying, “Many statues don’t have permission (and) stand on unauthorized land.”

The newly elected Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Jagan Mohan Reddy has passed demolition orders for Praja Vedika, a sprawling conference hall built by former Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu at Vundvalli in Amravati. According to the new AP government, Naidu’s Praja Vedika flouts environmental laws.

CM Reddy on Monday declared all the buildings that came up on the banks of Krishna river were illegal and unauthorised constructions. He said these would be demolished one after the other starting Wednesday.

Reddy had held his government’s first Collector’s Conference in the Praja Vedika hall and took the demolition decision of the building from within the building itself. “Praja Vedika is an illegal structure. It is constructed violating rules. A person of the stature of a Chief Minister had allowed construction of this building. If a CM himself violates rules, imagine the corruption prevailing down the administration?” he said.

Reddy added that he held the first Collector’s Conference from the Praja Vedika just to showcase how corruption is prevailing in the state. “This is the last meeting in this building. After Tuesday’s meeting with police officials including Director General of Police (DGP) and others, this building will be demolished. I order officials to demolish the building the very next day of the end of this meeting,” he said.

The TDP chief had earlier written to the new Chief Minister to allow him to retain the hall so he could work from there as the Leader of Opposition in the state assembly.

“I wish to continue the same arrangement, that the ‘Praja Vedika’ be declared as the residence annexe of the leader of the opposition, to facilitate me to meet legislators, visitors, common public and discharge my duties,” he wrote.

Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP was voted out in Assembly polls in April, with Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSR Congress claiming a massive mandate. The party also decimated the TDP in parliamentary elections, winning 22 of 25 seats.

Cricket World Cup preview – New Zealand v Pakistan: Pakistan needs to win again

In the 1992 World Cup at this stage of the tournament, Pakistan has won the match against New Zealand. Not once but twice, in the group stage and then in the semi-finals. Those two games were the only games which the Kiwis lost in World Cup 1992. Can Pakistan beat the Kiwis again? Well, the records say so, Pakistan won 6 games against New Zealand in World Cup clashes and lost only two.

Pakistan has comprehensively won the match against South Africa at Lord’s. The batting clicked well due to the inclusion of Haris Sohail and their bowling is known as their greatest strength. However, they have been pathetic when it comes to fielding. They have so far dropped 14 catches in the tournament, the most by any team. If they do not raise the standard of their fielding, it would be too difficult for them to reach the semis.

New Zealand, the unbeaten team of World Cup, needs just one win to qualify for the semis. They would hope to win it here as their next two games are against one of the strongest teams of the World Cup, Australia, and England). They have won close matches against teams like Bangladesh, South Africa, and West Indies when they should have won it comfortably. They should not let the opposition to make a comeback, else it could be curtains down for them as well in the tournament.

The weather for the match at Edgbaston is predicted to be warm and sunny for the day.

Players to watch out

Haris Sohail was in top form against South Africa and because of him, Pakistan’s middle order has started to look more solid than ever before. He can strike the balls against any bowler in any given situation.

Kane Williamson who has scored 2 hundred in 2 games would be eager to score one more hundred in today’s game, and win the match for his team to qualify for the semis. Being the captain he has the extra responsibility of motivating players and making plans for the team in a crunch situation. His calmness has already proved that he is one the best captain in this tournament so far.

55 countries of the Asia-Pacific group, including Pakistan, endorse India for non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council

In a major diplomatic win, 55 countries of the Asia-Pacific group at the UN have endorsed India for a 2-year non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council in 2021/22.

The elections to the non-permanent seats of UN Security Council would be held next year. India is confident of winning the elections.

Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, tweeted a video thanking the 55 Asia-Pacific nations for their support.

In a tweet, he Akbaruddin shared a video showing the flag of the countries which have endorsed India including Afghanistan, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China, Cyprus, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Fiji, Indonesia, Islamic Republic of Iran, Iraq, Japan, Jordan and Pakistan.

India launched its campaign to win the UNSC seat at a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) at the capital of Kyrgyzstan last month. Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj during a meeting said, “The SCO must support the member countries’ candidatures for the non-permanent membership of the UNSC for the years 2021-2022 and 2027-2028”.

After 8 years since the last term, India is seeking re-election into the non-permanent seat of the UNSC. Previously, India has been a non-permanent member of seven terms: 1950-51, 1967-68, 1972-73, 1977-78, 1984-85, 1991-92 and 2011-12.

The United Nations Security Council consists of five permanent members: United States, United Kingdom, China, Russia and France. Along with that, it has 10 non-permanent members elected by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

For several years now, India had been advocating for the expansion of the number of permanent seats in UN Security Council. Reforms had been hindered mainly due to the opposition of  ‘United for Consensus’, a 12-member group that opposes adding permanent members, has used the technicality of preventing the adoption of a negotiating text to be the basis of the discussions and go forward.

Congress gave a full toss to Modi, Modi hit the ball out of the stadium

The Congress party has a habit of scoring political self-goals. However, it seems that they have never learnt from their past mistakes of resorting to personal attacks against PM Modi and repeated the same blunder in the first session of newly elected 17th Lok Sabha.

This time it was party’s newly elected Leader of the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who had asked Prime Minister Modi on whether he has managed to send Congress President and Wayanad MP Rahul Gandhi and his mother, former Congress President and Raebareli MP Sonia Gandhi to jail over corruption allegations.

Scoring a massive self-goal, Chowdhury had asked PM Modi whether he was able to ‘catch anybody’ in the 2G and coal allocation scam. He further told the Prime Minister that he came to power by calling Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and those leaders who were accused in the 2G and coal scams as thieves, “then how are they sitting in the Parliament?”

However, on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who never misses any chance to put his opponents to the ground chose to reply back to Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s tirade.

Social media hailed PM Modi for his witty response to the Congress leadership following Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s challenge to the government.

Speaking for the first time in the Parliament after the BJP-led NDA government was voted back to power with a thumping majority, PM Modi responded to Congress Lok Sabha leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s remarks. PM Modi took a jibe on Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and said that it’s not emergency that anybody can be put in jail. We work according to the law and if someone was getting bail then he should enjoy it. They don’t indulge in vendetta.

“The country was not under Emergency and due process of law will be followed. If you get bail, enjoy it,” PM Modi said in a veiled reference to Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi.

Invoking the Emergency of 1975, Prime Minister Narendra Modi rejected Congress allegations that it was targeting Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and said “due process” will be followed while continuing the attack on corruption. PM Modi further said that his government will continue to take action against corruption.

Replying to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s Address in Lok Sabha, PM Modi underscored that the Congress had no right to criticise him repeatedly, while attacking the Congress on the Emergency, for failing to empower people, especially Muslims and for ignoring its own leaders.

Mirzapur: Mob beats up young man going to temple, Sunauvvar Ali and others arrested

On Sunday, a young man in Ahraura, Mirzapur, going to the famous Bhandari Devi Temple for a Darshan was attacked and beaten up by a mob. As per a report in Patrika.com, the incident of a coordinated attack on a man going to temple had created tension in the area which has now subsided after the police arrested the three main accused involved in the crime.

As per the report, over a dozen Muslim men had attacked a young man, a resident of Chowk Muhalla in Ahraura, Mirzapur on his way to the Bhandari Devi Temple. After the incident, several people had protested before the police station, condemning the attack and had demanded action from the police over the matter.

The protests reportedly continued till about 11 pm on Sunday night and were pacified only after the police station in-charge Amit Kumar Singh assured the crowd that police will take adequate action in the matter.

Taking swift action, the police then searched and arrested the main accused in the incident. Speaking to OpIndia, a police official confirmed that three accused, namely, Sonu, son of Maksood, Sunauvvar Ali, and Waheed have been arrested for attacking and beating up the young man.

Producing the accused in the local SDJM court, the police also stated that the accused are a threat to the law and order of the area. The court, taking cognisance of the issue, had reportedly rejected the bail applications of the three men and has ordered them into 14-day judicial custody.

Video and statistical highlights from Australia v England match

Oh, England, what have you done again! One step closer to making an early exit from the World Cup. On the other hand, Australia, as ruthless as they are known to be, especially in the World Cup tournament, becomes the first team to qualify for the semis.

England won the toss and decided to bowl first, despite knowing the two games they had lost in the tournament was due to batting second.

Australia started well, just like in all other matches. Both the openers added 123 runs for the first wicket; their 3rd hundred runs partnership of the tournament, one of the primary reasons for their success. David Warner (53) became the first batsman to reach 500 runs in this World Cup. But both the openers lost their wicket after reaching the milestones, Warner after reaching 500 runs, Finch after scoring his second hundred of the tournament.

The middle and lower order added a decent amount of runs, but yet not able to set a target of more than 300 runs for England. Australia finished at 285 for 7 in their 50 overs.

England had a terrible start to their innings, losing Vince on the second ball of the innings. Not one top-order batsman looked comfortable against Starc and Behrendorff. Soon they were struggling at 26 for 3 in 6 overs. The pressure started to mount to score quickly, and in the process, Jonny Bairstow too lost his wicket. Ben Stokes (89), added 71 runs with Jos Buttler for the 5th wicket, these two were England’s last hope to win the match. But Buttler was caught at deep square leg, and then Starc removed Stokes with a peach of a delivery, ending all the hopes for English fans. Both Starc and Behrendorff dominated the innings by taking 4 and five wickets respectively. Aaron Finch was declared Man of the Match for his fine hundred in the match.

Watch – Match Highlights

STATS

  • Finch scored his second hundred of this tournament, only Ganguly (3 in 2003) has scored more centuries in a World Cup edition as captain.
  • Warner became the 5th opener to score 500 or more runs in a World Cup tournament. Tendulkar reached the milestone twice (in 1996 & 2003), while Hayden (in 2007), Dilshan (in 2011) and Guptill (in 2015) are the other openers.
  • Warner and Finch scored the third 100 run partnership in the tournament; they were only the 4th pair after de Silva/Gurusinha in 1996, Gilchrist/Hayden in 2007 and  Dilshan/Sangakkara in 2015 to achieve this feat.
  • Starc and Behrandorff took nine wickets, only for the first time in World Cup history two left-hand pacers took nine wickets against a team in a match.

Madhya Pradesh: Kamal Nath govt decides to withdraw nearly 50,000 cases filed against Congress leaders and workers

In a controversial decision, the Congress-led Madhya Pradesh government has decided to withdraw nearly 50,000 cases filed against Congress workers and leaders in the state in the last 15 years, reported Asian Age.

According to the report, the decision of the Kamal Nath government to allow Congress workers to get away in nearly 50,000 cases comes after a cabinet meeting which was held earlier in January. The Congress government had decided to withdraw cases filed against Congress workers and leaders in the state during the 15-year-rule of BJP in Madhya Pradesh.

After the cabinet decision, the state government had constituted three-member district level committees comprising district collector, superintendent of police and district prosecutor to examine such cases and forward them to state home department to initiate the process to withdraw cases filed against Congress workers.

“Around 50,000 cases have been identified by the district committees and later referred to state home department for withdrawal”, the official spokesman said.

Earlier this month, it was reported that Kamal Nath government was set to table a bill which would scrap all cases against politicians and farmers filed in the last 15 years. The bill is expected to be presented in the monsoon session.

However, the BJP cried foul over the decision to withdraw cases filed against Congress workers and leaders in the state by Kamal Nath government.
