Digvijaya Singh advices Imran Khan on how to win Nobel Peace Prize and Sidhu on how to stop being abused

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh had a few pearls of wisdom to offer on a foggy Tuesday morning. Lashing out on Pakistani cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan in wake of the Pulwama terror attack, Singh urged Khan to ‘show guts’ and hand over Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar to India. This, Singh said, would bail out Pakistan from the financial crisis and also make him the frontrunner for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Hafiz Saeed, is a Pakistani Islamist militant who was responsible for the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai. Singh, However, had given a clean chit to Saeed by launching a book which accused the RSS of carrying out the terror attacks.

He then urged his colleague and other cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu, who gave a clean chit to Pakistan in the Pulwama attack, to put some sense in his friend Imran Khan.

That it is because of Khan that Sidhu is being abused. Sidhu, while absolving Pakistan of the terror attack, had said, “Terrorism has no religion. Terrorism has no caste, party and terrorism has no country.”

The Congress veteran leader appeared to be in a pensive mood as the skies were just clearing up and a bright sun was shining in the national capital. Singh said we as a nation should be introspecting on what have we done wrong in Kashmir in last 71 years. He urges the politicians to sweep their political differences aside and to draw out a roadmap to bring back brotherhood between Kashmiri Muslims and Kashmiri Pandits in Jammu and Kashmir.

And then, as if that was the most logical thing, Digvijaya Singh says that because Imran Khan was a great cricketer whom Singh admires, there is no way he cannot possibly tackle Muslim fundamentalists and ‘ISI sponsored terrorists groups’.

ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) is the premier intelligence agency of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, since the terror attack on 14th February, the cricketer Singh admires and who is currently the Prime Minister of our neighbouring country, has maintained radio silence and not even condemned the terror attack carried out by Pakistan-bred terrorists from Jaish-e-Mohammad.

Singh’s statement comes at a time when Congress leaders have been giving mixed reactions to the terror attack. While Congress supporting troll along with other Congress-friendly self-proclaimed intellectuals have floated a conspiracy theory that Prime Minister Modi might have orchestrated the terror attack, other Congress leaders have questioned the timing of terror attack which took place weeks before the country goes for general elections. Former Gujarat Congress President Bharat Solanki also wondered if the terror attack could be used as the plot for the new film by BJP. Another Congress leader even went to the extent of blaming the security forces for the Pulwama attack.

A teary adieu to Major Vibhuti Dhoundiyal: Married only last year, he made the ultimate sacrifice so we can live

0

Within a week of the deadly Pulwama terrorist attack that claimed the lives of more than 40 CRPF personnel, an encounter between the Armed forces and the terrorists claimed the lives of four brave soldiers early on February 18.

All four martyred soldiers belonged to 55, Rashtriya Rifles. Their names are Sheo Ram (Jhunjhunu), Sepoy Ajay Kumar (Meerut), Sepoy Hari Singh (Meerut) and Major V S Dhoundiyal (Dehradun). As per reports, all four soldiers were hit by bullets from the terrorists when the RR was laying a cordon around the area.

As per reports, Major Dhoundiyal sustained gunshot wounds on his neck and abdomen. He was evacuated to the 92 base hospital in Srinagar but succumbed to his injuries soon and was declared dead.

Major Vibhuti Shankar Dhoundiyal was a resident of Dehradun, Uttarakhand. He had joined the army in 2011, after finishing graduation from a college in the city. Described by his friends as a very simple, humble and respectful man, he had spent most of his career in the army in Jammu and Kashmir.

Major Vibhuti Dhaoundiyal had lost his father in 2012. He is survived by his grandmother, mother, three sisters and wife Nikita Kaul, a Kashmiri girl whom the Major had married in April 2018.

The mortal remains of the 34-year-old soldier were brought to his home in Dehradun yesterday. His wife Nikita, who works for an MNC in Delhi, had flown back to attend his last rites.

Thousands of people, army personnel and Uttarakhand CM Trivendra Singh Rawat had arrived to bid adieu to the braveheart. His last rites were performed with full state honours.

Photographs and videos of the major’s wife saluting her husband have gone viral on social media.

Uttarakhand had lost two of its sons in the Pulwama terrorist attack that had claimed 40 lives on 14 February. Just two days later, Major Chitresh Bisht, another soldier from the state, was martyred while diffusing an IED in Rajouri’s Nowshera sector.

‘Pakistani Bahu’ Sania Mirza should be removed as brand ambassador of the state: Telangana BJP MLA

T Raja Singh, BJP’s sole MLA from the state of Telangana has demanded the removal of tennis ace Sania Mirza as the state’s brand ambassador, in the wake of the terrorist attack in Pulwama, which has claimed lives of more than 40 CRPF personnel.

In the video getting viral on social media, the leader said that state can appoint any other player who has brought fame to the state and country like VVS Laxman, Saina Nehwal or PV Sindhu, as the state’s ambassador. But, he added, in order to give Pakistan a stern reply, ‘Pakistani bahu’ or daughter-in-law of Pakistan Sania Mirza must be removed as an ambassador of state.

Praising CM KC Rao’s move to not celebrate his birthday on 17th February, in order to extend condolences to the martyrs, Raja Singh appealed that while several countries are severing ties with Pakistan, Telangana must also do same.

“When the Indian government is making every attempt to isolate Pakistan and cutting off all its relations with the country in every field, it is not appropriate to continue Sania, a Pakistani Bahu, as the state’s brand ambassador,” Singh has stated. He added that Sania Mirza ceased to be an Indian, the day she married a Pakistani-national.

Tennis player Sania Mirza had married to Pakistan cricket captain Shoaib Malik in April 2010. She was appointed Telnagna’s state ambassador in July 2014.

Raja Singh is a firebrand Hindu leader from Telangana, and know for his tough stand on issues like Gau Raksha or cow protection. Last month, he along with police and Gau Rakshaks had intercepted a truck coming from Odisha, carrying around 60 calves. The truck was allegedly transporting cows and calves to slaughterhouses. Six people were arrested in the incident.

He was re-elected from Goshamahal Assembly, during the last year’s assembly elections. He had hit headlines recently when he had declared that he will not take oath in front of pro-tem Speaker of the Telangana assembly Mumtaz Ahmed Khan belonging to the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen or AIMIM.

Uttarakhand Police files FIR against JNU freelance protestor Shehla Rashid for spreading rumours after Pulwama attack

0

JNU freelance protestor, Shehla Rashid, who was earlier accused of syphoning off public donations collected for Kathua rape case has been booked by Dehradun Police on Monday for spreading rumours and fear on Twitter, in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack.

On February 16, Shehla had resorted to deliberate rumour mongering after she had claimed that 15-20 female students were stuck inside a hostel and were surrounded by a mob. She claimed that police was present at the spot but were not able to disperse the mob.

However, the Uttarakhand Police had to school the ultra-left wing freelance protestor Shehla Rashid after they dispelled these “rumours” in a tweet on Sunday, clarifying that the Kashmiris were not trapped in a hostel.

The Dehradun Police then registered an FIR against Rashid under IPC section 504 -intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace, IPC 505 (1)(b) – disturbing public tranquillity and Section 153b – imputations, assertions prejudicial to national integration. The Dehradun Police alleged the former JNU student union leader tried creating panic among masses with her tweet.

“In her tweet, Rashid claimed that Kashmiri girls were ‘trapped’ for hours and mobs outside were ‘baying for their blood’ both of which were factually incorrect and aimed at disturbing peace in the area,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Nivedita Kukreti as reported by The Times of India.

Meanwhile, After being booked by the Uttarakhand police, Shehla Rashid has now resorted to playing ‘victim’ despite attempting to stoke fear and communal tensions following the deadly terror attack by Islamic terror groups in Pulwama. “The price you pay for seeking justice under a BJP government,” tweeted Rashid.

This is not the first time Shehla Rashid has been held accountable for her actions on social media. Earlier, after the heinous Kathua rape case, Rashid had run a social media campaign with others and collected money in the name of rape victim of Kathua and as well as Unnao rape case. However, reports had emerged accusing Rashid of not keeping her part of the promise as the money never reached her. Shehla Rashid later refuted media reports even as the reporter stood his ground that the Kathua family received no money.

Another chapter in the love-hate relationship: BJP and Shiv Sena alliance puts NDA in the pole position in Maharashtra

Another chapter in the love-hate relationship between BJP and Shiv Sena was written yesterday when the two parties announced an alliance for not only the upcoming Lok Sabha election but also the assembly election due later this year. The alliance was announced in a star-studded press conference by BJP president Amit Shah, Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and several senior leaders from both the parties.

The announcement follows several months of veiled and open threats by both alliance partners to go solo. BJP will contest 25 seats, while Shiv Sena will contest 23. What will happen to the two other allies of BJP – Ramdas Athawale’s RPI and Mahadev Jankar’s RSP remains to be seen.

The history of BJP and Shiv Sena in the last 5 years is nothing short of a teenage love story – they fought 2014 Lok Sabha elections together but broke-up within a few months for the assembly election. They patched-up post assembly election to form the government but have fought civic body and Panchayat elections separately. The alliance announcement might not be the “happily ever after” moment, but it certainly is a win-win situation for both.

To appreciate this, it’s important to understand the political landscape of Maharashtra –

2014 Lok Sabha and assembly elections

Before 2014, Shiv Sena had always been the big brother in the assembly elections. BJP and Shiv Sena fought the 2014 Lok Sabha election together and swept the state by winning 23 and 18 seats respectively (1 seat was won by another alliance partner – Swabhimani Paksha, which is no longer a part of NDA). Brimming with confidence, BJP demanded an equal share in the assembly election due in October that year. Shiv Sena outrightly rejected this demand. After several rounds of negotiations, both the parties decided to fight the assembly election separately. BJP’s confidence was not misplaced as it emerged as the single largest party winning almost twice as many seats as Shiv Sena won. Since then, BJP has become the de-facto senior partner.

2014-2018 civic body and Panchayat elections

In the last four years, BJP has grown at the grassroot level in the state. Under the leadership of Devendra Fadnavis, the party performed spectacularly in civic body and Panchayat elections conducted in the state in last four years. BJP emerged as the largest party while Shiv Sena was a distant second. Congress and NCP were relegated to the bottom. BJP ousted Congress and NCP from their strongholds like Latur, Sangli, Solapur, Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Today, BJP has become the largest party in almost every district of Maharashtra.

So why do BJP and Shiv Sena need each other?

While many political pundits were speculating either way about the possibility of a BJP-Shiv Sena alliance, it had become a virtual certainly after Congress and NCP announced their own alliance. Both BJP and Shiv Sena knew that a three-cornered contest would hurt both the parties. Take a look at the maps of Lok Sabha and assembly elections –

Animation created using maps available on mapsofindia.com

As the map transitions from Lok Sabha to assembly election, barring the Shiv Sena strongholds of Mumbai, Konkan and pockets of Marathwada, the light-saffron shade of Shiv Sena wanes rapidly. At the same time, BJP’s dark-saffron remains almost consistent. Even the Mumbai stronghold of Shiv Sena is not safe. BJP came close to toppling Shiv Sena in the BMC election of 2017. This means that Shiv Sena needs BJP more than BJP needs Shiv Sena. This was also evidenced by the local grapevine that Sena MPs were pressurizing Uddhav Thackeray to tie-up with BJP.

Impact of Maratha reservation

Around 33% of the population, Marathas wield considerable influence in state politics. The demand for Marathas to be included in OBC has been a political hot potato for a long time. OBCs, another strong political force, were fiercely opposed to diluting their quota. Fadnavis government played a political masterstroke by announcing 16% reservation to Marathas under special category without disturbing the existing OBC reservation. This move is likely to swing a considerable share of Maratha votes from Congress-NCP towards BJP-Shiv Sena. At the same time, OBCs will be happy that their quota is not being diluted.

Dhangar demand for ST status

Currently, the Dhangar community gets reservation under the Vimukta Jati and Nomadic Tribes (VJNT) quota. They have a long-standing demand of being classified under Scheduled Tribes (ST). Dhangars form around 9% of the total population and have a significant influence on 4 Lok Sabha and 30-35 assembly seats. The four Lok Sabha seats are Baramati, Madha, Satara and Solapur. A prominent Dhangar leader Mahadev Jankar is an ally of BJP and is a minister in the state government. With BJP’s backing in 2014 Lok Sabha election, he managed to win 42% votes in the NCP bastion Baramati. NCP’s Supriya Sule suffered a 17.6% negative vote swing. This time around, Amit Shah and Devendra Fadnavis are determined to snatch Baramati from NCP. Meanwhile, Jankar has said that he’s ready to exchange Baramati for the neighbouring Madha (another NCP bastion from where Sharad Pawar is likely to contest). If Fadnavis manages to satisfy the Dhangar community’s demand, both Baramati and Madha could be up for grab. Satara MP Udayanraje Bhosale is currently in NCP but faces strong opposition within the party. Udayanraje had recently praised the BJP-Shiv Sena government and had hinted that he “has all options open”.

The Ambedkar-Owaisi factor

Another factor which cannot be ignored is the alliance between Prakash Ambedkar led Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh and Asauddin Owaisi’s AIMIM. While Ambedkar has very limited electoral appeal, AIMIM made its presence felt in 2014 assembly election by contesting 24 seats and winning 2. The party managed to get around 13% votes on the seats which it contested. The tie-up with Ambedkar will strengthen Owaisi’s Muslim-Dalit positioning. Meanwhile, Congress-NCP too is trying to woo Ambedkar, but his chances of joining them appear slim. If Ambedkar and Owaisi contest together on all 48 seats, they might end up taking away 4-5% votes from Congress-NCP.

In summary, the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance puts NDA in the pole position in Maharashtra. If they select the right candidates and manage to contain rebellion, NDA can repeat the 2014 performance in Maharashtra.

ICJ hearing: Indian diplomats refuse to shake hands, Salve exposes the farce of Pakistan’s military courts

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has begun hearing India’s plea over the case of Kulbhushan Jadhav, an Indian who has been sentenced to death by a military court in Pakistan on charges of espionage.

Harish Salve, ex-solicitor general oF India, who is representing India at the Hague, argued before the ICJ yesterday that as a foreign detainee, Jadhav has a right to life, right to fair trial, and a right to an impartial judiciary. He pointed out that the military courts in Pakistan have sentenced over 161 civilians to death in opaque proceedings in the last two years.

As per reports, Salve argued that international standards demand that military courts, like all courts, should be impartial, competent and must adhere to the minimum standards of fairness. However, Salve added, the military courts in Pakistan are far from independent. “Judges in the military courts are military officers who are an executive branch of the government itself and do not enjoy independence from the government hierarchy.”

Salve further added that in Pakistan, it is not mandatory for the judges of the military court to have a judicial or legal training or even a law degree. There are no security tenures either which are a prerequisite to ensure judicial competence and independence.

Salve added further that Jadhav’s trial by a military court hopelessly fails to satisfy even the minimum standards of due process and should be declared unlawful. He asserted that Pakistan actively uses its military courts to try civilians and it has been done by amending their constitution.

Salve also argued before the court that by holding Jadhav’s trial in a military court, Pakistan has willfully and brazenly violated article 36 of the Vienna convention.

It is notable here that Pakistan’s military courts were first set up in 2015 for two years to ensure speedy trials after the Peshawar Army school attack. In 2017, the tenure of the courts was extended for another two years.

In the four years of their existence, the courts have convicted 617 people for terrorism-related offenses. 346 people have been given death sentences and 271 have received prison sentences. 56 people have already been hanged.

However, due to the obscurity that the Pakistan government maintains over the proceedings of the court, no one knows who the convicts are, what are the exact charges being brought against them or what are the defenses the accused have been allowed to present against the charges.

In another development, Deepak Mittal, the joint secretary of MEA and Venu Rajamony, India’s ambassador for the Netherlands refused to shake hands with Anwar Mansoor Khan, the attorney general of Pakistan. Both Mittal and Rajamony offered a customary ‘Namaskar’ to the Pakistani AG.

Mittal and Rajamony’s humble refusal to shake the outstretched hand of the Pakistani AG soon grabbed nationwide attention and was hailed by many on social media as a silent and polite message of disapproval from the diplomats to the enemy nation.

Kubhushan Jadhav, an Indian national and ex-Navy officer, employed at the Chabahar port in Iran, was abducted at the behest of the Pakistani military in 2016. Pakistan had claimed that they had arrested Jadhav from Balochistan. A Pakistani military court had sentenced Jadhav to death on April 2017. On May 2017, the ICJ had ordered a stay over the death sentence after hearing India’s appeal.

Pulwama attack: Bikaner District Magistrate issues orders to Pakistani citizens to leave the district within 48 hours

Tamil Nadu: 38-year-old trans-woman priest beheaded over temple land, body found inside sanctum

0

In a horrific incident in Tamil Nadu, a 38-year old trans-woman priest and Bharatanatyam artist was brutally murdered in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu. The mutilated body of Rajathi, a 38-year-old transgender woman priest was found inside the sanctum of a temple on Friday, 15 February, reported The News Minute.

According to the reports, the police has found her decapitated head, which was left outside of the Mariamman temple that she used to manage. The police have arrested two suspects living in the vicinity of the temple. The main accused is identified as 23-year-old Maruthu, who owns the land on which Rajathi’s temple is built.

According to the police, Maruthu with his aide, visited the temple with a sickle when Rajathi was performing a pooja inside the sanctum on Friday morning. Maruthu and his aide then attacked her, chopped her body and placed her head outside the temple, said Grace Banu, the founder of Trans Rights Now Collective and a native of Thoothukudi.

According to Banu, the accused was harassing Rajathi for the past one year. “We heard that he used to threaten her and shout at her as the land belonged to his grandmother. She had been getting calls from him for the past one year,” said Grace Banu.

Reportedly, Rajathi had been in a relationship with Maruthu in the past. The relationship between Maruthu and Rajathi turned sour following which the latter stopped visiting the temple.

“Maruthi and his brothers own the land where this temple is located. After the falling out, it was just Rajathi who was taking care of the temple affairs. A few days ago, Maruthu learnt that she had entered into a relationship with another man. It was following this that the bloodshed took place. Besides this, the 5 brothers also used to harass Rajathi and the trans women who would come to the temple to pray. When she took over the temple, we feel they feared that the temple would fall into the hands of the trans community,” the source from the community, who did not want to be named, told TNM.

Meanwhile, the two accused are on the run while the police have sent Rajathi’s body to the post mortem and an investigation has been initiated. The funeral ceremony will be held in Thoothukudi on Saturday.

Speaking to the media, Rajamani, the sub-inspector of Thoothukudi North police station added, “We have registered an FIR in the case. The accused has been identified as a 23-year old man who lives in the same area. No arrest has been made until now.”

Hampi Vandalism: Four youths punished to re-erect the pillars they had knocked down, fined ₹70,000 each

0

On Monday, a court in Hospet city of Karnataka directed the four miscreants who had vandalised pillars at the Vishnu Temple Complex in Hampi to re-erect the pillars and also imposed a fine of ₹70,000 each.

According to the reports, the judge Poornima Yadav of the local Hospet JMFC court punished the four youths – Ayush from Madhya Pradesh, Raja Babu Chowdary, Raj Aryan and Rajesh Kumar Chowdary from Bihar with ₹70,000 each and ordered that the four accused to be taken to the spot to re-erect the pillars, in the presence of Archaeological Survey of India officials, the Hampi police inspector and other officials.

The four accused reportedly admitted their guilt and assured the court that they would not indulge in vandalism in the future. All the four were also released on Thursday after they paid a total of ₹2.8 lakhs fine. Speaking to the media, Kalimuthu, Deputy Superintending Archeologist, Hampi Mini Circle, confirmed that some of the fallen pillars have been re-erected by the youths.

Additional Public Prosecutor Geetha Mirajka said the four were arrested on February 8 and were in custody till February 13. “The maximum punishment for the act is two years imprisonment or fine up to Rs 1 lakh. Offenders will have to serve the jail term if they are unable to pay the fine. The judge ordered them to pay the fine and they were released after they re-erected the pillar,” she said.

We had earlier reported about a group of miscreants seen in a viral video damaging the carved stone pillars in Hampi. The video shows three men wrecking the pillars of 14th century Vishnu temple and the subsequent exultation by the trio after the pillars were broken down. The fourth accused had shot the video and had uploaded it in the social media.

The incident of vandalism at historic sites of Hampi had triggered severe anger among the locals as well as people on the Social Media. People had expressed their concern and anger about the lack of enough security arrangements at such historically and culturally important locations.

The heritage collection in the ancient town of Hampi spans nearly 42 square kilometres and includes over 1,600 monuments. These relics include temples, palaces, markets and public baths. Most of the structures enduring today were built between the 14th century and 16th century, while the town dates back to 3BC. The collection of monuments has been accorded World Heritage status by the UNESCO and it represents the ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire.

Turkish website spreads rumours about Muslim Kashmiris being threatened in Hindu-majority India after Pulwama suicide bomb attack

A Turkish website called trtworld.com was seen spreading rumours about India attacking Kashmiris in the wake of the recent Pulwama terrorist attack. Referring to the Pulwama terrorist attack as “a suicide bomb attack” and Kashmir as “India-administered Kashmir”, the website posted a tweet from its official Twitter handle.

The report published by the website says that “Muslim Kashmiris living in Hindu-majority India are facing property evictions, job suspensions and attacks on social media after a suicide bomber killed 44 paramilitary troops in India-administered Kashmir.” It mentions the statements of some “fear-engulfed Kashmiris”, as claimed in the report, living in other parts of India regarding the kinds of threats they are facing from the Hindu-right wing groups. The report does not stop at that, it further goes on to claim that the last year was the deadliest for India’s security personnel in Kashmir ever since PM Modi’s “Hindu nationalist” Bharatiya Janata Party came to power.

A Twitter user claimed that his tweet, in which he tagged the Home Ministry and the Prime Minister’s Office complaining about the anti-India tweet of the Trt World, was suspiciously deleted by Twitter.

Similar claims have been made by the “liberal intelligentsia” in India in what appears to be an attempt to divert the attention from the ghastly terrorist attack carried out by Pakistan-backed terrorist outfit Jaish-e Mohammad. A JNU freelance protestor Shehla Rashid was seen spreading the rumours that Kashmiri students were being threatened by a mob in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Her claims were refuted by the Dehradun police. While there was no mob threatening the Kashmiri students, there were protests against the Kashmiris who were celebrating the death of soldiers in the Pulwama Terrorist attack.
