‘North Korean channel’ to ‘Hindu Pak’: Insults used by seculars put focus on their own crimes

“Hindu Pakistan,” Shashi Tharoor quips. Even before the controversy over that one subsides, he follows it up with cries of “Hindu Taliban.”

Let’s leave aside for the moment the politics behind Tharoor’s newly ‘Janeudhari’ Party disavowing his comments. Expressions such as “Hindu Taliban” and “Hindu Pakistan” had been doing the rounds among ‘secular’ voices on social media long before Tharoor used them. Instead, I want to point out just how astonishingly self-defeating those insults are.

So they want to speak ill of the Hindu right. And they do so by speaking of “Hindu Pakistan”?

So Pakistan is a bad thing, eh? You mean, several million Muslims split from their fellow Indians, founded an independent nation at the same exact time as we did and it didn’t go well? You mean the place became such a cesspool of violence and terrorism that Pakistan’s name is to be used today as an insult in itself? How come? Whatever happened to Islam being a religion of peace?

Much the same can be said for the term “Hindu Taliban.” Where’s the peace?

Now, every political party uses exaggeration and rhetoric to discredit its opponents. But why are opponents of the Hindu right having to borrow names of violent Islamist and Leftist organizations to coin insults against the RSS/BJP?

Why the need to talk about “Hindu Taliban” at all? Is it because they are failing to find something in the millennia-old history of Indian Hindus that can serve as a metaphor for absolute evil?

Here’s another pejorative they use: “India’s North Korean channels.” The expression is used on social media to mock certain news channels that are accused of having a pro-Modi editorial stance.

Okay, but why “North Korean channel”? I know, because North Korea has a Communist government, because of which the media there is only ever allowed to talk about how great the ruling Communists are!

So basically the left is accusing the Hindu right of forcing sections of media to become as bad as leftist media under leftist regimes?

As I said earlier, that is astonishingly self-defeating coming from opponents of the Hindu right. And hilarious to boot.

I thought the Mahagathbandhan of Leftists and Islamists was trying to put the focus on alleged excesses of the Hindu right with their name calling. Instead, all I can see is them drawing attention to their own crimes.

There’s more. What term do Modi’s detractors use when they accuse him of stifling free expression of artists, journalists, writers, students and filmmakers?

You guessed it! They call it “undeclared Emergency.”

They did it again!

The problem that Modi’s detractors are facing is obvious. Whether they dig into history or into current affairs, everything that they could use as a metaphor for evil just so happens to have been perpetrated by their allies the Islamists, their allies the Leftists or self-proclaimed Bharat Ratna Indira Gandhi.

And that is why the imagination of liberals is failing them when it comes to coining insults against the Hindu right. Even that of the aristocratic Tharoor, with the entire farrago of the last five hundred years of the English language at his disposal. No matter how much they try, their insults end up looking like this:

<Qualifier> + <Something bad that Congress, Leftists or Islamists did>

The Hindu right, on the other hand, faces no such problem in designing its own rhetoric. Consider the term “Urban Naxal”  that the Hindu right has begun using recently to attack its opponents. The metaphor for evil used here is that of “Naxals,” i.e., violent leftists who have murdered hundreds of innocent people.

So, what’s left of the insults that enemies of the Hindu right like to use? There’s always “Fascist.” From JNU professors to Congressi intellectuals, they love to refer to the RSS as ‘fascist.’ Ah! The word fascism comes from the Italian word ‘fascio,’ meaning a ‘bundle of sticks.’ It became an established political philosophy under Mussolini, who was endorsed by the Pope himself in return for giving the Catholic Church authority over Vatican City and a big wad of cash. There is enough in those last two sentences to make sections of India’s secular establishment highly uncomfortable.

Finally, there’s “Bhakt.” I guess they would call me one. I’ll give them this much: that one does not make any reference to any great evil perpetrated by Congress, Islamists or Communists. If there is any historical reference there, it is to the Bhakti movement which emphasized love and compassion towards all living things and sometimes advocated extreme forms of non-violence. You can go ahead and call me a Bhakt, I don’t mind.

Of course, the honest thing here for opponents of the Hindu right to do would be to give up. To admit that there is no civilization that has been historically more tolerant and peaceful than that of the Hindus of India. To stop presenting Islam as a religion of peace,  to stop presenting Communism as a form of social justice and to stop presenting India’s biggest zamindars as allies of the poor and downtrodden. But that would take more honesty than they will ever have.

Delhi MLA puts poster asking Rahul Gandhi to hug a 1984 Sikh genocide victim instead of hugging for publicity

Delhi MLA and Shiromani Akali Dal leader Manjinder Singh Sirsa has put up a poster asking Rahul Gandhi to hug a victim of 1984 Sikh genocide instead of making a show of hugging the Prime Minister. He has put up these posters on the way to Lok Sabha which is currently in the monsoon session. He states these posters are to highlight Congress’s hypocrisy in hate and hug politics.

The posters say, “Rahul Gandhi, please don’t hug people to gain publicity, hug some people to try and heal some wounds that the Congress has given them.”

The posters then say, “Hug Jagdish Kaur, whose entire family was burned alive in the 1984 Sikh genocide.” The poster also featured the images of Rahul Gandhi hugging the PM. On the right, there is a picture of the old lady Jagdish Kaur, and the words, “Do you possess the courage to clear the hatred spread by your family?”

The poster asks Rahul Gandhi to hug a victim of 1984 Sikh genocide

Rahul Gandhi had created a stir in media and political circles after he planted a hug on the Prime Minister after his speech in the No-Confidence Motion debate in Lok Sabha last week. Though Rahul’s hug was termed as ‘political masterstroke’ and brilliance by Congress friendly media, it was widely criticised by intellectuals and political observers. Not only because it was a violation of parliamentary decorum and norms, but also for the manner in which he later winked at his party men indicating his slyness. It was widely termed as cheap political stunts to achieve narrow political gains. MP and legal activist Subramanian Swamy had also termed the hug as a potential security threat for the PM.

Majinder Sirsa’s posters have attracted many reactions on Twitter with several people mirroring the need for Congress to acknowledge its past mistakes.

In 1984, thousands of Sikhs were slaughtered after the assassination of the then PM Indira Gandhi by her Sikh security guards. Many Congressmen were believed to have directly participated in the carnage.

For a workshop on anti-bullying, Congress invites a lady who bullied teenagers

Grand old party, Congress, in association with Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies, has organised an ‘anti-bullying workshop’ where one of the speakers, Gurmehar Kaur, is best known in recent times for threatening young boys for making memes.

Gurmehar Kaur, 20-something-year-old girl, daughter of an army martyr who lost his life in a terrorist attack in Jammu & Kashmir, had released a video last year in February holding placards where she, rather naively, declared that “Pakistan did not kill my dad, war killed him.” She was trolled and allegedly received even death threats for this comment.

It was argued that free speech was under attack if a 20-something girl can’t express herself through videos and placards. She received support and became a household name after relentless media coverage. Sportspersons who didn’t agree with her were trolled and abused by self-styled liberals. Ironically, disagreeing with her was made a crime.

Months later, in October last year, the same Gurmehar Kaur who was made an icon of free and young India, was accused of doing the exact same thing she had complained of – issuing threats to people because she did not like something that was posted online. The victims, a bunch of young college kids, run a page on Facebook, ‘Squint Neon’ and ‘dared’ them to post an image from the video she had posted online.

The above Facebook post has now been deleted. Screenshot provided by one of the admins of the Facebook page.

The admins of the page, younger than Gurmehar, had decided to go public with the ‘threat’ they received, pointing out how a girl, painted as an icon and champion of free speech was using various means to curb the same of others.

After publicly outing, instead of introspecting about her actions and stop the bullying, Gurmehar allegedly decided to attack the career and livelihood prospects of the boys. In a screenshot of messages allegedly sent by her, she is seen warning the boys with threats of a defamation case, police action, and a destroyed career where they may not get admissions in good colleges and may even fail to get a job.

Gurmher threatens to destroy career of boys
The threat by Gurmehar Kaur received on Tuesday (October 3, 2017) night by the Facebook page admins.

Following the threats, admins of ‘Squint Neon’ page deactivated their page for a few days before reactivating.

It is rather tragic that Congress would invite someone who had used cyber-bullying as a tool to silence someone and settle scores as a speaker for their ‘anti-bullying workshop’ unless she is speaking of the time when she bullied kids over a meme.

Or maybe she is invited because Priyanka Gandhi is her favourite human.

Toronto mass shooter identified as 29 year old Faisal Hussain of Pakistani origin

The culprit who executed the mass shooting in Toronto which led to the death of two girls including that of a 10-year-old and injured 13, has been identified as 29-year-old Faisal Hussain whose family origins lie in Pakistan.

The shooting took place on Sunday in Toronto’s Greektown area, where the attacker was said to have been armed with a handgun. He was subsequently killed in an exchange of gunfire with the police.

As reported by Global News, Hussain is reported to be the son of Canadian parents who have Pakistani origins. Following the attack, the parents issued a statement claiming that their son suffered from “severe mental health challenges”, and struggled with physios and depression. They also claimed that medication and therapy were not successful in his case.

According to a BBC report, Hussain’s identity was released by Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU), owing to what it claims were exceptional circumstances. The SIU would be carrying out a postmortem of his body on Tuesday.

Even though the motive of the incident has not been specified, a Toronto Sun report has claimed that Hussain had expressed support to a website which is being perceived as pro-Islamic State. It also claimed that Hussain was well known to law enforcement authorities owing to his history involving weapons and violence. The report also claimed that the police are investigating the possibility of the shooting being a Jihadi inspired mission.

Incidentally, it isn’t the only time individuals with a Pakistani origin have been the perpetrators of a mass shooting.

It was reported in 2015 that San Bernardino shooters Syed Rizwan Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik who had killed 14 individuals, had Pakistani roots. Farook was born in the USA to Pakistani parents, while his wife was born in Pakistan. They were reported to have remained in contact with Islamic State terrorists.

Congress ends up tweeting meme of Rahul Gandhi while trying to ‘expose’ BJP

In the day and age where what happens on Twitter becomes primetime news and hits the headlines, the impact of social media cannot be ignored. One of the reasons why many politicians and political parties have now taken to Twitter to let the message across directly, especially when mainstream media is quite likely to distort it.

The Congress party is no different. Congress’ official handle on Twitter today tried to expose “how fake news is spread” by BJP. Congress tweeted and asked people to identify how many tweets on the running Twitter hashtag ‘#BlackMoneyCrackdown was actually copied from a google document. The Congress has long alleged that BJP hands out a document to some of its supporters with sample tweets which are in turn used to by many to ‘trend a hashtag’.

The tweet posted by Congress handle to ‘expose’ BJP’s IT cell

However, the google doc link that was tweeted by the Congress party, from where many tweets were allegedly copied to “spread fake news” and trend the hashtag #BlackMoneyCrackdown, held an unexpected surprise. When one clicked on the google doc link, it took people to a document that had a funny meme of Congress President Rahul Gandhi. The document said “Arey yaar mein toh majak kar raha tha. Ullu banaya bada maza aaya”. The text was accompanied by an image of Rahul Gandhi winking during the No-Confidence motion after hugging Prime Minister Modi.

The link which Congress posted, led to a Google Drive document which had a Rahul Gandhi meme

One Twitter user uploaded how it looked via video.

The tweet by Congress’ social media handle talks about is one of the annoying things called ‘trending hashtags’ – an activity where multiple handles flood Twitter by tweets with a pre-decided hashtag to play around the Twitter algorithm to get a hashtag ‘trending’. From political parties to film stars to even self-styled godman accused of rape regularly use this to get a point across. While the authenticity of content in many such trends is questionable, to refer to ‘trending hashtag’ as ‘spreading fake news’ because certain tweets were copied-pasted from a Google Drive document is a far stretch of the imagination.

However, upon clicking the link shared by Congress in their tweet, it would take you to the above document which has the meme of a winking Rahul Gandhi. In all probability, the original document had something else, and once it was shared by Congress social media team, the content in the original document got edited. Or it could have been a trap laid by a prankster and Congress fell into it and ended up mocking Rahul Gandhi themselves.

However, Congress, instead of claiming that BJP changed the content after being ‘exposed’ chose to delete the tweet instead. It just shows how sensitive Congress is about their Prime Minister-hopeful. Earlier, too, a Congress leader was sacked for sarcastically using ‘Pappu’ to defend Rahul Gandhi, even though he now seems to have adopted the name. Fear of Rahul Gandhi being offended because he was mocked is so much that a journalist with The Wire even wanted an Australian to be thrown into jail for referring to Rahul Gandhi as a ‘joke’.

Hence, given the circumstances, it is understandable why Congress Twitter account deleted the tweet.

Karnataka loan waiver: Banks have still not begun process of clearing loans announced by Kumaraswamy

Three weeks since Kumaraswamy government in Karnataka announced a partial crop loan waiver for farmers, the process for the same is yet to begin. As per reports, the government is even yet to reimburse banks for the waiver which was announced by previous Siddaramaiah government.

According to reports, the government has not even issued guidelines to banks or entered into any understanding on how to go about the loan waiver. The New Indian Express report says that the government has only released Rs. 1,500 crore to cooperative banks, which is just part of the loan waiver announced by Siddaramaiah government. Yet another instalment needs to be released before the loan waiver announced by Kumaraswamy could start. Meanwhile, farmers’ unions have given a deadline of 15th August to take concrete measures, failing which a state-wide bandh will be held.

Meanwhile, the banks are reluctant to write off interest on the outstanding loans of Rs. 30,000 crore which amounts to about Rs. 5,300 crore. A meeting is expected to be held today with the SLBC (State-Level Banker Committee) where various issues are expected to be discussed. If the banks do not agree to the extent the loan waiver, the government will have to shell out Rs. 5,300 more which would take loan waiver amount to Rs. 50,000.

Earlier, delay in detailing the loan waiver made farmers anxious as they were not sure whether to wait for loan waiver as promised by Kumaraswamy or to commence sowing by obtaining fresh loans from private lenders. Farmer loan waiver has been at the centre of many controversies during and after the Karnataka state assembly elections held in May this year.

The promise to waive off farmer loans has been repeated by Congress President Rahul Gandhi umpteen times while campaigning in Karnataka before the state went for polls. On 20th March 2018, during his third visit to Karnataka, he had assailed PM Modi and FM Jaitley for not forming a policy for farmer loan waiver. On 4th May 2018, Rahul Gandhi had said, “When the current NDA government is waiving loans of big business magnates, it will not be difficult to waive loans of poor farmers who are the ‘annadatas’”.

Congress’ newly minted allies and the current Chief Minister of Karnataka had also promised farm loan waiver in their Karnataka manifesto. Kumaraswamy, after being sworn in as the Chief Minister had also reiterated his commitment to waiving off farm loans. However, Kumaraswamy had said that since he has come to power with blessings of Congress, he can only take decision on loan waiver only after discussion and approval with Rahul Gandhi.

‘Muslims should stop eating beef, killing of cows should stop’: Shia Waqf Board Chief

The Chairman of Shia Waqf Board Waseem Rizvi has stated that killing of cows is ‘haram’ (forbidden) in Islam and it should stop. He has added that Muslims should stop eating beef. He has also called for stricter laws against cow smugglers.

Referring to recent incidents of cow smugglers being attacked by a mob, Rizvi added that as security cannot be deployed everywhere, such instances of violence will stop if there are strict punishments against cattle smuggling.
Rizvi was speaking over the statement by RSS leader Indresh Kumar. Kumar has stated recently that mob lynching incidents, like that of Rakbar Khan in Alwar, Rajasthan will not happen if cow slaughter is stopped.

Discussing Indresh Kumar’s statement, Rizvi has added further that he thinks Indresh Kumar has a point and religious sentiments should not be hurt. He added that lynching would stop when cow slaughter is stopped. He also stated that people should not kill an animal which is given the status of the mother by a community.

Shia Board chief Rizvi has also been supportive of the Ram temple in Ayodhya. The Shia Waqf board has deposed in the Supreme Court that the disputed structure at Ayodhya was built after destroying a temple. Rizvi has been critical of ‘extremist’ Sunnis and has claimed in the past that they are propagating radicalism in India. Recently, in a video, he had criticised fundamentalists for trying to spread radicalism in India and had added that Muslims who keep beard without a moustache are fundamentalists.

Controversy over mob lynching has erupted after a man in Rajasthan’s Alwar died after allegedly being thrashed by a mob. The man, Rakbar Khan was allegedly a cattle smuggler. Cattle smuggling has been a menace in many parts of India and there are several instances where cattle smugglers have attacked and even killed the cattle owners. There are also recent cases where the cattle smugglers have attacked the security forces too.

Times of India apologises for using a Hindu saint’s picture to depict a Muslim rape accused

The Times of India (TOI) on Tuesday tendered an apology for carrying a misleading image of a Hindu saint in an article titled, “Maharashtra ‘godman’ forces men into unnatural sex, held”.

As reported by us, the article carried a social share image depicting a Hindu saint which insinuated that the crime was committed by a Hindu:

Image of a Sadhu where the accused is a Muslim ‘ self-styled godman’

Shockingly though the content reveals that the accused was actually was Muslim named Asif Noori. Incidentally, TOI had earlier too given misleading spins to such reports which included calling Muslim godmen as “Tantriks” and “Swamis” in its story headlines.

Such a repeated offence by TOI resulted in a furore on social media, following which the newspaper has tendered an apology:

Even though it appeared that TOI wanted to desperately put this incident behind it, social media users were in no mood to let the newspaper off the hook:

One user even questioned why the updated image depicted a child and not a Muslim cleric, considering the newspaper was keen on giving a religious angle via the image:

It remains to be seen whether TOI would take lessons from this episode and prevent the occurrence of such malicious incidents in the future.

India is fast becoming Open Defecation Free under Swachh Bharat Mission

In 2015, a UNICEF Report mentioned that as many as 524 million (52.4 crore) people in India are forced to defecate in open due to lack of sanitation infrastructure. Another 2015 report by UNICEF and World Health Organization also classified country’s progress in reducing open defecation as “moderate” and cited that in India there has been “very little change in last 20 years”.

Please take a moment to process this information and its enormity. Most of us who are privileged enough to be reading this article in English on our laptop or smartphone may not even realize that even after 67 years of independence, 52 crore people or more than 60% of our population did not have access to basic amenities like toilets.

Thankfully, Modi government decided to address this issue head-on and started building sanitation infrastructure in mission mode. Government’s relentless focus under Swachh Bharat Mission ensured that sanitation coverage started improving dramatically year after year. As per the data from Economic Survey 2017-18, only 39% population had access to toilets in 2014. By January 2018, this number had rapidly surged to 76%.

http://pib.nic.in/PressReleaseIframePage.aspx?PRID=1518055

By the time of writing this article in July 2018, the sanitation coverage is about to touch 90%. Swachh Bharat Mission by Government of India has so far delivered remarkable progress in just 4 years –

  • 78 million (7.8 crores) toilets constructed
  • 4 lakh Villages, 417 districts and 19 States / Union Territories declared Open Defecation Free

As per the data are shown above, more toilets were built in 4 years of current BJP government than in 67 years of all previous governments. Status and progress of this project can be tracked in real time on Swachh Bharat Mission dashboard

http://swachhbharatmission.gov.in/

In another associated initiative, Railway Ministry has installed 1,25,000 bio-toilets in train coaches. Fitted under the train lavatories, they prevent human waste from falling onto the tracks. Jointly developed by engineers of Indian Railways and DRDO, these are modern technology mechanisms which convert human waste into water and gases. Gases are released into the atmosphere and only water is discharged onto tracks. This initiative will go a long way in improving the hygiene and cleanliness of railway tracks across the country.

https://twitter.com/cnbctv18news/status/987647136031375360

The planned target of Swachh Bharat Mission is to make India 100% Open Defecation Free by October 2019. If the project continues progressing as planned, then by next year, India would have provided sanitation infrastructure to its entire population. After 100% village electrification, it would be another feather in the cap for Modi government and a huge milestone in resolving another grass-root problem affecting India.

Yogi Adityanath visits all the 75 districts of the state in record 16 months time

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has now created a record of being the first Chief Minister to visit all the 75 districts of the state in just 16 months after coming to power.

Yogi Adityanath visited Hathras on Monday and laid foundation stones to 34 development schemes worth Rs. 155 crores, making his visit to the 75th district of the state. He had also visited Etah on Sunday where he oversaw the development works and laid foundation stones for development works worth Rs.253 crores.

Yogi Adityanath after assuming charge as the Chief Minister made his intentions to visit every corner of the state. He had announced that his priority is to visit every district in the state to speed up the development process. He had ensured that the schemes launched by both central and state governments will reach every person in the state.

The spokesperson of BJP Manish Shukla said, “It is not that he has just touched all the district, he also had night stays in some of them and there are some places where he has made frequent visits in keeping with their importance.”

The chief minister has travelled the state extensively and has visited certain districts more than once. He has visited his hometown Gorakhpur and the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Modi, Varanasi more than three times. The Prime Minister has also lauded the efforts of the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister for his outreach programme and other commendable works across the state.

Yogi Adityanath addressed the media, accused the predecessors of neglecting the developmental activities in the state. He also targeted previous governments for deteriorating law and order situation in the state. He said that the ‘goonda raj’ had deterred the investors from investing in the state.

Recently, Yogi Adityanath had broken the myth of ‘Noida Jinx’ by visiting Noida. This superstition started in 1988 when former chief minister Vir Bahadur Singh lost the power soon after visiting Noida. It is believed that any chief minister visiting Noida will lose his/her power. Yogi Adityanath, despite this myth, visited Noida in December to inaugurate metro projects and other developmental works.

The Chief Minister has prioritized the efforts to improve law and order in the state, which was deteriorated during the previous governments. He has also attracted investments of Rs.60,000 crore after swearing as Chief Minister of the state. Recently, Samsung has opened the world’s largest mobile factory in Uttar Pradesh, which provides jobs to more than 70,000 people in the state.
