Mice chew through notes worth Rs. 12.38 lakhs inside Assam ATM

In what appears to be a different kind of disruptive demonetisation event, mice have chewed through currency notes worth Rs 12.38 lakhs inside an ATM in Assam’s Tinsukia. According to reports, hundreds of Rs. 500 and Rs. 2000 notes were found shredded into bits when repair personnel opened a closed down ATM in Tinsukia’s Laipuli area.

According to reports, the SBI ATM (DFBK -000196116) in Laipuli area was shut down due to technical failure since May 20. On May 19, the Guwahati based financial company Global Business Solutions, which runs the ATM has reportedly deposited Rs. 29.48 lakhs in that ATM. But the ATM developed technical issues the next day and was shut down.

On June 11, when the company personnel opened the ATM for repair work, they found heaps of currency notes shredded into pieces. The bank officials reportedly were able to salvage Rs. 17.10 lakhs worth of notes undestroyed, but the rest has been destroyed. The bank officials have also reportedly stated that the amounts are estimated.

The bank has reportedly lodged an FIR at the local police station to look into the incident. Local people have reportedly stated that the reason why it took so long for the company to send repairmen to the closed down ATM should be probed too.

Failed by the state government, Karnataka farmers to take to streets

In a blow to the newly formed JDS-Congress government in Karnataka, the farmers in the state have decided to hold a protest against the government over delay in announcement of farm loan waiver. Hundreds of farmers, under the banner of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha and Hasiru Sene, will take to streets in Mandya, to stage a protest outside the Deputy Commissioner’s office against the failure of providing any solutions related to farm distress.

It is interesting to see that, the protests are being held by farmers of the Old-Mysore region, where JDS party led by H D Kumaraswamy had won a large number of seats in recent elections. The farmers have accused the Chief Minister of forgetting his promises of loan waivers that he had made during the election campaign. Kumaraswamy had said that he would waive off all the loans within 24 hours of coming to power.

The state has received a good amount of rainfall this year; water levels have risen in almost all reservoirs. The farmers are waiting for the provision of credit to begin sowing, which picks up by the beginning of July in the state.

However, the protest is not supported by another faction of the KRRS. Kodihalli Chandrashekhar, president of the KRRS, said while his faction does not support the protest, they are equally running out of patience with the government.

Kumaraswamy struggling to fulfill his promise to waive off loans had sought Centre’s help to solve the crisis. He had urged the government to provide 50 percent financial support for the initiative.

It seems that the present JDS-Congress coalition government has now got the taste of its own medicine, as the farmers have started protested against them. Earlier BJP had demanded  H D Kumaraswamy to fulfil his promise of farmers loan waive-off.

Moreover, Chief Minister Kumaraswamy is at the mercy of Congress president Rahul Gandhi as soon after becoming Chief Minister took a different stand by saying that any decision regarding farmers loans can only be taken with Congress’s approval. He had said that he came to power with the blessings of the Congress rather than people.

Kerala High Court orders inquiry after state run PSU Malabar Cement files go ‘missing’

The files pertaining to the massive misappropriation which allegedly took place in Government of Kerala run Malabar Cement Ltd. have gone ‘missing‘. As per reports, set of writ petitions went missing after the matters were listed for consideration before court.

The files related to the violation of rules in import of fly ash where the Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau (VACB) found large-scale corruption in limestone and fly ash as well as awarding of contract for transporting and appointment of staff in the public sector.

In September 2016, the VACB had arrested K Padmakumar, Managing Director of Malabar Cements Ltd. following the raids carried out in his office and residence. Cases were filed against the officials on import of fly ash and allotment of dealerships violating norms, which had subsequently resulted in financial loss to the public sector company. Even then the High Court had criticised the government and the vigilance department for shoddy handling of cases which related to irregularities in issuing bank guarantees.

As per reports, financial irregularities to the tune of Rs. 2.7 crore were detected and cognisable offences of criminal misconduct, criminal breach of trust and criminal conspiracy were proved against the suspected persons in the quick verification conducted by the Vigilance. In September last year, the Enforcement Directorate provisionally attached assets worth Rs. 23 crore of the controversial businessman V M Radhakrishnan in relation to the Malabar Cement case. He had reportedly bought these properties between 2004 and 2008 when there was allegedly rampant corruption in Malabar Cements including that of supply of fly ash by his firm.

Madhur Bhandarkar spills the beans: reveals film fraternity split over Modi becoming PM in 2014 elections

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar while speaking to the media in Bhilai where he had gone to inaugurate the workshop of the Natya Shala, revealed that a section of Bollywood was against Modi becoming the Prime Minister in 2014. Hindi film industry, which prides itself on its secular image, appeared to be taking sides for the first time during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections with some Bollywood A-listers asking people to vote “strategically” to protect the country’s secular character.

He further recalled how B-town was split into groups, one supporting PM Modi, of which he and Anupam Kher were a part of and another against Modi, with around 60 celebrities signing an appeal urging the people to protect the country’s ‘secular foundation’ taking an overt anti-Modi stance.

Madhur went on to talk about the controversy encompassing his movie ‘Indu Sarkar’. He said he was disappointed when no one came and backed him on the controversy created over the film. He strongly condemned politicking on movies and creating pressure for banning it. He clearly dismissed the allegation that his movie was funded by BJP government saying that if at all he needed funding it would be for a higher budget movie and not for a low budgeted movie like Indu Sarkar.

In 2014, an appeal from several Bollywood actors, directors and scriptwriters to Indian voters has split the film industry down the middle. Among the sixty film personalities who have signed the letter are Imtiaz Ali, Vishal Bhardwaj, Nandita Das, Govind Nihalani, Saeed Mirza, Zoya Akhtar, Nandita Das, Kabir Khan, Mahesh Bhatt, Shubha Mudgal and Aditi Rao Hydari.

Scriptwriter Anjum Rajabali, who drafted the letter had said, “Our sense of India comes from the fact that we are a secular country and if that notion is challenged…if that itself is vulnerable at this moment, that is what has compelled people to speak up. It is the right-wing fundamentalist forces within the BJP that are making young people feel very insecure.”

Director Madhur Bhandarkar had then kicked off a debate on the issue on Twitter, asking why a “secular place like Bollywood” is being sought to be divided ” in the garb of stopping so-called divisive forces”.

He had come out in support of PM Modi saying it’s “time India got a visionary leader”

Amongst others who came forward to support Bhandarkar were Anupam Kher, Tusshar Kapoor, and producer Ashoke Pandit. As expected Twitterati came out in full support of Modi, lashing out at Bollywood celebrities, attacking those who supported the initiative.

Floods in North Eastern India, Railways, Indian Army, NDRF help in relief and evacuation

Many North Eastern states are struggling with massive floods. The situation has worsened in Assam, Tripura and Manipur where many rivers are flowing above danger marks and several villages, roads and railway tracks have been submerged.

As per latest reports, 23 people have died so far and 6 people have died in the last 24 hours. Many incidents of flash floods and even landslides have reportedly cut off vital transport routes and in many areas crops and livestock have been swept off.

According to a report in India Today, Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Karimganj and Cacher districts of Assam and Dhalai, Unakoti, North Tripura and Khowai districts of Tripura have been reeling under torrential rains and floods since many days.

The report states that the Indian Railways has taken up major relief and assistance work in flood-hit areas. People in several areas have been taking shelter in railway stations and the Railways have provided hundreds of bottles of bottled water, food packets, baby food and other relief items.

The North Eastern Frontier Railways have been providing motor trolleys to rescue stranded people and helping to distribute medical supplies and relief materials.

In the Silchar station in Assam, the railways have placed 15 spare coaches for people to take shelter. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has reported as on June 16, they had evacuated 407 persons from flood-hit areas in Assam and a total of 3629 people had been rescued and taken to safer areas in Tripura. Over 5000 people have reportedly been taking shelter in relief camps in Tripura.

IUML promised Rohith Vemula’s mother a house of her own, yet to keep their word she claims

The News Minute has reported that the mother of deceased student Rohith Vemula has claimed that the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) has not yet delivered on their promise of providing Radhika Vemula with a house. She told TNM how she was made to attend rallies and events by the leaders of party and had her for their political gains, all the while keeping her hopes alive of a house. Radhika Vemula also spoke of two cheques worth Rs. 2.5 lakhs which were given to her, out of which one bounced.

“I thought about returning back, but they insisted that the event had been organised and claimed that they even had a cheque worth Rs 15 lakh was ready on the table and they would hand it over to me. Even though they had been promising this for two years, I was still hopeful and I went,” she said recounting an occasion when she considered not attending an event as her daughter-in-law was having a child. However, Subair (General Secretary of Youth Wing of Kerala unit of Muslim League), ignored her as soon as her speech was over. “His aides even assured me that they would meet me at the airport, but we waited for as long as we could and left,” she added.

Radhika Vemula has long since been associated with the IUML. In 2016, she along with Rohith Vemula’s brother, attended a rally in Kerala. In the same year, the Muslim League had taken upon itself the task of constructing a house for her.

Congress’ dream fragmentized as BSP denies possibility of alliance in Madhya Pradesh

Heather Wolf once said, ‘Everyday is a new day to hope, dream and try again’. Congress’ hope to take on BJP and notion to whitewash PM Modi by the ‘united opposition strategy,’ came tumbling down as Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) today said that it was not in talks with the Congress for an alliance for the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls slated for later this year.

Buoyed by the formation of its alliance government in Karnataka, a Congress leader last month had hinted the party would be inclined to align with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to wrest power from the BJP in Madhya Pradesh. Unfortunately the strategies Congress is trying to braid in its quest to defeat BJP seem to be not working in their favour.

A senior state BSP leader added that the party would, as things stand today, contest all 230 Assembly seats in the state. Talking to PTI, BSP state president Narmada Prasad Ahirwar said, “I was asked by the media that Congress leaders were saying that there are discussions underway with the BSP for an alliance for the next assembly elections. I clarified that we are not in discussions at the state level and, I think neither at the central leadership level.”

The state Congress, meanwhile, going back on their words claimed that it never said alliance talks were underway with the BSP. “We never named any party. The Congress only said that we would try to have an alliance with political parties with a similar ideology. We never mentioned the BSP’s name. It will depend on the situation when we enter the election phase,” Madhya Pradesh Congress’ media department’s chief Manak Agarwal said.

The political parties, despite having differences in opinions and contrasting ideologies, in its power crusade, are all set to take bizarre decisions and are ready to stretch to any length to form outlandish alliances for political benefits.

Despite having a difference of opinion on the Delhi government’s standoff with the Lieutenant Governor, senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel on Sunday met TMC chief Mamata Banerjee. According to Trinamool Congress insiders, Patel’s visit indicates the interest of the Congress and the importance of Banerjee in cobbling together a coalition of opposition parties.

The Indian political graph is such that every now and then we see politicians changing their stance, breaking ties and building fresh ones. Last year at the end of July when Nitish Kumar had decided to sever ties with the “Mahagathbandhan” and join the BJP, it was speculated that the opposition or what was left of it, might get more united than before in order to somehow try and defeat the BJP. In order to portray the unity, RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav had organized a “Desh Bachao, Bhajpa Bhagao” rally in Patna on 27th August last year which came across as a solemn affair with alleged low attendance which reportedly led Lalu to tweet an allegedly morphed photo showing packed crowds to somehow try and portray the rally as success.

A high octane political drama is yet to unfold as we move towards the 2019 general elections. The United Opposition ‘khicchdi’ has too many Prime Ministerial mouths to feed. It is for the voters to be prudent and decide correctly. Will we vote on rhetoric and a plea of negativity, or will we ask those who seek a vote to clarify, define their ideological positions and vote on that basis?

Can’t go into someone’s residence and hold a strike there, Delhi HC to AAP government

The Delhi  High Court today cornered the AAP government for the ongoing ‘strike’ that CM Kejriwal and three of his ministers are holding at the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. According to reports, the HC has asked the lawyers of the AAP government who had authorised them to hold a strike at Raj Niwas.

A bench of Justices AK Chawla and Navin Chawla reportedly asked the AAP lawyers as to who had authorised the dharna (strike). They observed that such strikes or sit-ins are to be held outside of an official establishment not inside.

Earlier today, BJP leader Vijender Gupta had petitioned the Delhi HC to pass an order to end the strike by Kejriwal inside Raj Niwas. The AAP government has also approached the HC alleging that the IAS officers are on strike and not cooperating with their government.

Arvind Kejriwal, Satyendra Jain, Manish Sisodia and Gopal Rai have been staging a so-called sit-in inside the Raj Niwas since June 11. They have claimed that the IAS officers of Delhi are on a strike and the LG should direct them to join work. However, this has been refuted by the IAS Association. The IAS officers have already clarified that they are not on strike and performing their usual duties.

Yesterday, AAP workers staged a march on the streets, bringing many parts of the city to a standstill. Arvind Kejriwal was also criticised for making repeated false claims on the issue and attempting to spread misinformation.

Delhi Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash had alleged that he was called to the CM’s residence at midnight on 19th February early this year and assaulted by his MLAs. The AAP government has always been at loggerheads with the bureaucrats and LG of Delhi.

‘If it were up to me, I would kill all BJP leaders and go to jail,’ Gujarat Congress MLA’s controversial statement

Gujarat Congress MLA from Vav, Geniben Thakore, recently, while addressing farmers’ gathering said that she is pained by the plight of the farmers and if it were up to her, she would kill them (BJP leaders) and go to jail if it were to come to that.

She can be heard saying that if it benefits the farmers, she is ready to kill them (BJP leaders) and go to jail. That if one has to pick weapons, then Congress leaders are ready to do so.

Geniben was elected in 2017 Gujarat Assembly elections after winning by over 7,000 votes against sitting MLA and former minister in the Rupani government.

This is not the first time a Congress MLA has used foul language. Earlier in May, former Congress MP and currently MLA, Virji Thummar had used choicest abuses for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah. One wonders if Congress President Rahul Gandhi approves of and endorses this language?

British Museum shares image of sandstone sculpture of Harihara, Indians demand it is returned back

Any Indian who whenever walks into the British Museum will be undoubted, forever reminded of how his or her past has been brutally clawed away and appended to British history, now on display for tourists from around the world to gloat over.

Recently the British Museum on Twitter uploaded an image of an Indian sandstone sculpture displayed in their Museum which attracted a lot of resentment from Indians demanding it to be returned back as it is part of Indian heritage.

This spectacular sculpture mentioned is 1000 years old and depicts ‘Harihara’ in its center. Harihara is the fused representation of Vishnu (Hari) and Shiva (Hara) from the Hindu tradition. Also known as Shankaranarayana (“Shankara” is Shiva, and “Narayana” is Vishnu), Harihara is thus revered by both Vaishnavites and Shaivites as a form of the Supreme God.

Harihara is also sometimes used as a philosophical term to denote the unity of Vishnu and Shiva as different aspects of the same Ultimate Reality called Brahman. This concept of equivalence of various gods as one principle and “oneness of all existence” is discussed as Harihara in the texts of Advaita Vedanta school of Hindu philosophy.

For decades people have seemed to remain complacent about the display of their national treasures in the British museums, but not anymore. Lately, Indians are being strident in their opinions and demanding it to be returned back.

Twitterati poured with similar opinions demanding the Indian Heritage to be returned back to India.

Amongst the other Indian artifacts Britain flaunts is the Relief from the side of the Amaravati stupa. The story of Amravati is just one among the many such art objects that have been transplanted to British museums from India by British colonial officers.

A celebrated relic kept in the Victoria and Albert Museum is “Tipu’s Tiger”, a mechanical toy created for Tipu Sultan and acquired by East India Company officials after the siege of Seringapatam in 1799 wherein the company won over the kingdom of Mysore.

Not just the Kohinoor, there are several other artifacts that were also stolen by the British from India.

After the last king of Mysore died fighting the British, they took away the ring and sword of Tipu Sultan. Though the sword eventually returned to India in 2004 after Indian Liquor Baron Vijay Mallya bought it at an auction for Rs 1.57 crore, his ring still remains in the UK.

The Sultanganj Buddha, over 2m tall and weighing over 500kg, it is the largest known complete Indian metal sculpture kept at the Birmingham Museum.

It’s time that we regard theft of Antiquities not merely as a cultural theft, which is a huge issue in itself, but also a civilizational threat and a threat to the very existence of our nation.

Earlier in 2016, as a part of ‘Operation Hidden Idol,’ raids and seizures were made at the Asia Art Week in New York which sought to curb the flow of smuggled cultural products into New York. Manhattan District Attorney, Cyrus Vance Jr., had condemned the auctioning of smuggled cultural artefacts. He said, “Those who peddle historic relics with no consideration for how they were acquired are active participants in the laundering of stolen property.” He went on to add, “It is not only unethical but unlawful.”

Prime Minister of Modi is the first Indian head of government to demand stolen Indian heritage from the U.S, Canada, Germany, and other countries. The USA handed over 200 ancient artefacts to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the States but only 11 have come back to India thus far. However, the new Antiquities Bill proposed by his government in 2017 appears rather weak when compared to global standards.

The government should make stringent laws and make sure that the looted Indian Heritage is restored back promptly. On a deeper level, we owe it to our ancestors that we return the memories of their tradition and their endeavours to those who would truly treasure them and worship them and not abandon them in the hands of those who would treat them as merely decorative pieces.
