Shashi Tharoor goofs up on Twitter, wrongly attributes a cartoon to RK Laxman

The Congress MP Shashi Tharoor used a cartoon by Sandeep Adhwaryu and attributed it to RK Laxman. The Congress MP had been trying to use the image in order to create a public opinion against the public sector banks and the Modi government in the wake of the PNB scam involving Nirav Modi.

Several reports have underlined the fact that the scam has its origins in the UPA period. The fact that Chidambaram had signed an order benefitting Choksi and other businessmen just before the end of UPA II term has also come to light. This order was scrapped by Modi government in December 2014. The then RBI governor Raghuram Rajan had distanced himself from NDA’s decision to scrap Chidambaram’s 80-20 rule.

In spite of this, the Congress party has been trying to pin the scam on BJP led NDA. The Congress MP seems to be repeating his party’s lies in a rather subtle manner. In fact, the cartoon demonstrates the reality under the UPA regime.

The cartoon about public sector banks which Shashi Tharoor shared had been replugged by the cartoonist Sandeep Adhwaryu recently.

The Congress MP used the above cartoon with the comment ‘The immortal RK Laxman’s cartoon in 1990.. what prescience!’ It is amusing that he has invoked Laxman in spite of the presence of Adhwaryu’s signature under the cartoon.

Is a sinister plan afoot to Islamicise Hindu majority Jammu by consciously settling illegal Rohingyas there?

0

The Rohingya Muslims who are supposed to have fled the Rakhine state of Myanmar to escape the persecution of the Myanmar army, have found a surprisingly cosy home in India. Boosted by the UPA government’s indifference to check their illegal immigration, they made the country their home without checking with the owners and as per a ground report by Swarajya have made Jammu the epicentre of their settlement.

Just to remind, it was famously reported how the erstwhile UPA government had in 2012 turned a blind eye to the illegal immigration, due to domestic political pressure and international concern over human rights. As a result of this inflow, their numbers have been pegged at about 40,000 which was excluding the 14,000 odd Rohingyas who are registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

The impression of the Rohingya community though started to morph from being simple refugees to being a security threat after it was found that the Rohingyas had started to get radicalised by the Lashkar-e-Toeba (LeT) to avenge the sectarian violence in Myanmar. And it was also found that their retribution was also for some reason aimed towards India.

Since then it was also noted how an Al-Qaeda agent was arrested in Delhi while trying to recruit Rohingyas, which further fuelled speculations about the dangerous nature of the refugees.

In the backdrop of such strong threats, these developments from Jammu might indicate a worrying trend.

As per the ground report, the locals and authorities have developed an intense wariness to the illegal Rohingyas who they call a ploy to transform Jammu into an Islamic demography.

A senior official in Jammu and Kashmir police’s intelligence wing spills out the Rohingyas’ modus operandi to reach Jammu, which takes a two-day train from West Bengal’s Sealdah. By some accounts, they end up inside West Bengal by making a Rs 3,000 bus journey from Bangladesh. In Bengal, the police officer claimed that they are helped by a syndicate which facilitates their trip to Jammu.

The journey though always seems to stop in the Hindu majority Jammu, with Kashmir bereft of any such refugee influx, even though they demographically share the same religion. As of January 2018, there are a total of 1,548 Rohingya families in Jammu out of which 192 are housed at the largest camp in Muslim dominated area of Bhatindi.

Incidentally, the police officer even floated a possible conspiracy of them being settled around army camp and in light of their involvement in terror activities, authorities are maintaining a strict eye on them.

The Rohingyas, in contrast, are seen recounting their plight while speaking to the reporter, which incidentally are riddled with contradictions. One such instance being a certain Mohammed Yunus lamenting that he would be killed if he attempts to go to this native Rakhine. Just minutes earlier he was happily recounting how he went to Rakhine three months ago to attend a family wedding. After spending a happy week there he returned to Jammu with his brother’s family.

Hinting at the Rohingyas having a godfather helping and nurturing them, the report claims that a market operated by them is bigger and better stocked and others within just five years of its existence. This has led other shopkeepers to speculate that the Rohingyas have a support system supplying them with land and resources.

The support also extends to them getting documents like Aadhaar, voter cards and permanent resident certificate (PRC) via fraudulent means. Only J&K are allowed to obtain PRC cards which allow them to buy land, get government jobs to name a few.

This disdain for the Rohingyas also extends to BJP leader and J&K Assembly Speaker Kavinder Gupta who questions why 19,960 Hindu families who migrated from Pakistan in the past 70 years have never been given citizenship while the Rohingyas have by all accounts been made state subjects.

As per the chairman of National Panthers Party Harsh Dev Singh, this Rohingya settlement is a conspiracy to alter Jammu’s demography so that resident Dogras are rendered a minority. An advocate Ankur Sharma who had filed a PIL in the supreme court asking for the elimination of minority benefits for J&K Muslims, outright called the Rohingya settlement a plot to Islamicise Jammu. The view that Rohingyas as an Islamist project which suits the politics of “some”.

The Hindu residents living near Rohingya camps allege that the Rohingyas are involved in criminal activities like selling drugs, with 60-70 KG of Heroin being seized from them till date. What also irked the locals was the families once slaughtering a cow in full public view. The practices of Rohingyas fighting among themselves and roaming around at night has also unnerved the locals.

They, as a result, have been calling for the deportation of the Rohingyas which is challenging to say the least considering Myanmar doesn’t recognise them as citizens. The law enforcement also doesn’t seem to bother them as many of them are coolly back to their old ways after serving a jail sentence.

This sordid tale of a possible change of Jammu’s demography raises the question whether forces are at play to make Jammu the next Kashmir for the Hindu inhabitants, and if yes, then what can be done to stop this nefarious agenda at play.

BJP accuses Siddaramaiah of digging into taxpayers pockets with a borewell scam

0

Yet another allegation of a scam has been levelled by the BJP against the Congress government led by Siddaramaiah in Karnataka. On this occasion, the allegations are about a hurried approval for 1800 borewells in the constituency of Social Welfare Minister and Siddaramaiah’s close confidante H Anjaneya.

The implementation of the ‘Ganga Kalyan’ scheme with an allocation of 18 crores, promising borewells for SC, ST, and minorities had not followed the standard tender procedures as per BJP’s allegation.

The BJP MP Shobha Karandlaje, in her press statement, said that digging of 1800 borewells in a single constituency was in violation of mining and environment rules. To enable the implementation of this scheme, BJP MP alleged that officials were transferred and companies were given orders to dig these borewells. But only a handful borewells had been dug in reality, claimed the BJP MP.

Shobha Karandlaje also stated that an approval from Mines and Geology Department had not been taken before going ahead with this scheme. The minister’s wife had been involved in striking corrupt deals with companies, she claimed. She alleged that the same minister was previously involved in an SC/ST hostel scam involving 19 crores.

The complete press statement can be read below :

BJP MP accused the social welfare minister of a Borewell scam in her press statement

The BJP has demanded the Social Welfare Minister’s resignation and a CBI investigation into the matter. The CM of Karnataka has not responded to BJP’s demands so far.

Modi Diplomacy: Trudeau made to name pro-Khalistani groups among the likes of Al-Qaida, ISIS, LeT

0

In what is being perceived as a major diplomatic achievement for the Modi government, Canada has named pro-Khalistani organisations like Babbar Khalsa and International Sikh Youth Federation (ISYF) in the same vein as other dreaded Islamic terror organisations in the world.

India and Canada yesterday released a joint statement which condemned global terrorism in strong words. The most remarkable part of the statement was it acknowledged and named the pro-Khalistani separatist groups as terror organisations that indulge in violent extremism and radicalization.

The joint statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs is titled as “Framework of cooperation between India and Canada on Countering Terrorism and violent extremism”.

The statement says that both India and Canada recognized the urgent need to disrupt recruitment, terrorist movements and the flow of Foreign Terrorist Fighters, to address the threat posed by cross-border and state-sponsored terrorism, stop sources of terrorist financing, dismantle terrorist infrastructure and prevent the supply of arms to terrorists. It also emphasized the need to deny operating space to terrorist and violent extremist groups.

Further, it said that both countries have committed to work together to neutralize the threats emanating from terrorist groups such as Al Qaida, ISIS, the Haqqani Network, LeT, JeM, Babbar Khalsa International, and the International Sikh Youth Federation.

The mention of cross-border terrorism in the statement is important because many of the leaders of the Babbar Khalsa and ISYF are currently living in Pakistan.

PM Modi’s statement after the meeting also included cooperation in other fields, but the message to the Canadian government regarding their soft approach to pro-Khalistani elements was loud and clear.

Justin Trudeau’s week-long visit has seen a lot of criticism in both national and international media. The Trudeau government has long been accused of being soft, even inclusive of pro-Khalistani organisations. Trudeau’s apparent refusal to meet the Punjab CM had already sparked a row in the media and diplomatic circle. Many have speculated that PM Modi and his government’s visible lack of ceremonial welcome had pushed the Canadian government into a corner and they quickly corrected their course. Trudeau met the Punjab CM on Wednesday and as expected, the Prime Minister’s welcome statement soon followed on the next day.

Trudeau had sparked another major controversy when the convicted terrorist Jaspal Atwal was extended an invitation to the Canadian official dinner. Backlash and stern stand of the Indian government quickly made the Canadian side rescind the invitation and apologised for the ‘oversight’.

Justin Trudeau fanboys in Newslaundry had already praised Trudeau’s acumen for bringing along a convicted terrorist. They had claimed that such a move would make Trudeau even more popular among Sikhs back home in Canada. Now that Trudeau has bracketed Khalistani groups with Islamist terrorist organisations like ISIS & Al-Qaida, we should await what latest spin the Trudeau fanboys can bring. As India’s unperturbed stand on terrorism has finally made Canada blink and choose between covertly backing terrorists and continuing the healthy bilateral business, we wonder if Newslaundry is now going to come up with an article describing how that smile Trudeau was meant to leave with, has turned upside down into a frown.

The Narendra Modi led government of India has been unfaltering in its stand against support to terrorism and has finally succeeded in bringing Canada to realise that to continue healthy bilateral ties, they will need to respect India’s sovereignty and take decisive steps to curb separatists in its soil. This move, coming on the back of news that Pakistan too has been isolated internationally thanks to FATF sanctions, signals major wins for Indian diplomacy.

Siddaramiah govt allocates ₹ 10 core in Karnataka budget for ‘intelligence gathering’ in the election year

0

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah has allocated a whopping 10 crore rupees for collecting intelligence during the year 2018, when the state goes for assembly polls. A report in Times Now has stated that the Karnataka CM allocated these funds in a supplementary budget.

This has raised several questions on why did the state government allocate high additional funds in the year when the state is undergoing assembly elections.

CM Siddaramiah had presented the last state budget of his term last Friday. Since then he had presented three supplementary budget estimates in the assembly. The third installment of these supplementary estimates was tabled in the assembly on Wednesday for 5351.49 crores rupees.

Questions were raised on the necessity of three supplementary estimates, but the Home Minister of Karnataka justified it saying every state does it.

In the past, the BJP had alleged that the Siddaramiah government is tapping phones of BJP leaders in the state. The Congress government in the state had denied such allegations. BJP leader R Ashok had earlier alleged that the Sidaramiah government is misusing the state machinery to tap the phones of political opponents. Replying to those allegations, Siddaramiah came up with claims that it was the central government that tapped phones and his government had never indulged in such activities.

As Karnataka gears up for Assembly elections later this year, allocation of such funds for the sole purpose of ‘intelligence gathering’ has raised several questions on the intention of the Congress government.

‘The government has started to create havoc’: Mehul Choksi writes to his employees, plays victim

0

In a letter released by Gitanjali Gems promoter Mehul Choksi to his employees, Choksi has asked them to look for jobs elsewhere as his company is not in a position to pay current and future dues as all assets are sealed by the investigating agencies.

As reported by Republic TV, in his letter released by his lawyer Sanjay Abbot, Choksi claims that the operations have come to a standstill as the government and investigating agencies have ‘started to create havoc’ and are ‘hell-bent’ on stopping operations’. He says a ‘situation of fear and injustice has been created against him and his organisation’. He claims innocence and says that while the investigation takes its course, the operations in his company have come to a standstill and it would make it difficult to pay the dues and salaries of employees currently as well as in future. Keeping that in view, he has requested the employees to look for other career opportunities. He also promised to pay the past dues of the employees, once things return to normalcy.

Diamond merchant Nirav Modi and his maternal uncle and business partner Mehul Choksi are accused in the multi-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case. Recently, the Enforcement Directorate had seized several premium cars, including a Rolls Royce Ghost, Porsche Panamera, 2 Mercedes Benz among others, belonging to Nirav Modi and his companies.

The Enforcement Directorate had issued a summons for appearance to Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi, for their involvement in the Rs. 11,400 crore PNB fraud. The summons was issued under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Meanwhile, the ED has raided several offices and showrooms of Nirav Modi and Choksi and recovered Rs. 5100 crore in gems, jewellery and gold. The case was registered against them after the Punjab National Bank had registered complaints with Law Enforcement authorities alleging fraud.

On 31st January, CBI had booked Nirav Modi and others in a separate case of cheating worth Rs. 280 crore after a complaint by PNB. It is being probed whether the proceeds of the crime were converted into black money and used to create illegal assets. Mehul Choksi has been involved in shady dealings in the past. After an investigation by SEBI, Mehul Choksi and a set of firms were suspected of market manipulation and subsequently barred from trading for a period of six months.

Acting on the advice of the ED, the Ministry of External Affairs has suspended the passports of Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi for four weeks with immediate effect.

Scam ridden Chidambaram’s excuse: Right to privacy, right to live in dignity

0

Former Union Minister P. Chidambaram, who is neck-deep in allegations of various corruption scams, has moved the Supreme Court and sought protection to his right to privacy and right to live in dignity.

As reported by Times of India, following a series of raids and summons to his son Karthi Chidambaram by the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for alleged irregularities of obtaining FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) approvals for INX Media and Aircel-Maxis deal, Chidambaram has alleged ‘witch hunt’ by the CBI and the ED. The former union minister of finance has challenged the authorities to give shape to the real agenda of targeting him. He claims that neither he nor his son is named in the FIR lodged by the CBI.

In his petition to Supreme Court, Chidambaram introduces himself as senior advocate and member of Parliament and says, ‘The writ petition is being filed to defend and protect the petitioner’s fundamental rights under Article 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution and to defend his right to privacy and the right to live, along with members of his family, in dignity.’ However, as per reports, there seem to be procedural defects in the petition which could soon be notified to Chidambaram’s advocate on record Anupam Lal Das.

In the petition, Chidambaram told the SC that he lived alone in a house in posh Jor Bagh, jointly owned by his wife and son. Earlier in January, in a raid conducted at this house, classified CBI reports were reportedly seized from his house. The status report was reportedly submitted by the investigative agency to the Supreme Court in a sealed cover to the SC double bench of Justices GS Singhvi and K Radhakrishnan on August 1, 2013, when Chidambaram was a Union Minister in the UPA-2 cabinet. Such reports from investigative agencies are not meant to be made available for anyone else except the Supreme Court.

The petition further said, ‘The CBI and ED, as part of political vendetta, have made vexatious searches, issued repeated summons, unreasonably questioned persons for unconscionably long hours, unlawfully attached fixed deposits, maliciously leaked false information to the media and otherwise caused extreme harassment, anguish and humiliation to me and my son, and to other persons who are normal business and social friends of my son.’

This news emerges after a Supreme Court bench refused to stay the summons against Karti Chidambaram in the INX media case issued by the Enforcement Directorate.

The father-son duo has been under the scanner for alleged dubious foreign investment clearances given during the tenure of P Chidambaram as finance minister at the previous UPA dispensation. The case relates to the dubious Aircel-Maxis deal. In 2006, Aircel was sold to Maxis – a Malaysian company – in a deal that allegedly violated foreign investments protocol. The Enforcement Directorate is currently investigating various aspects of the FIPB approval given in the Aircel-Maxis deal case under anti-money laundering laws. The CBI has also registered a case regarding alleged irregularities in granting the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Finance Minister. The agency has levelled the charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating, taking gratification by corrupt or illegal means and criminal misconduct.

India on Global Corruption Index: The Lies vs The Facts

0

As seen in the info-graphic below, India’s performance on the Global Corruption Perception Index (GCI) for 2017 has improved from pre-2014 days. Since 2013, India has improved both its score as well as ranking on the GCI. In 2013, India had a score of 36, today it has a score of 40. In 2013, India was ranked 94 out of 177 countries. In 2017, it has been ranked 81 out of 180 countries.

However, with the publication of Transparency International’s Global Corruption Index for 2017, sections of the media and political commentators wasted no time in offering their opinion. Much of this turned out to be fake propaganda distorting facts and spreading apparent lies. Below is journalist Sagarika Ghose who tweeted the following:

Some media outlets ran headlines too, claiming that India has slipped on the GCI:

In light of the facts presented above, we can see that these claims range from distortion of facts to outright factual inaccuracy. When we see the detailed facts about India’s score and ranking over the years, the fake propaganda being spread by sections of the media and the commentariat becomes even starker.

THE DETAILED FACTS

For the benefit of Sagarika Ghose and everybody else spinning the GCI rankings to argue that India has become worse in terms of corruption in 2017 than in 2016, below are the plain facts:

  • India’s rank in 2016 was 79 out of 176 countries
  • In 2017, India was ranked 81 out of 180 countries
  • So, in effect, India’s ranking has improved
  • Again, India’s score was 40 in 2016
  • This score has not changed in 2017. Therefore, India has not performed any worse in terms of corruption in 2017
  • Now, the 2016 score of 40 was better than the score of 38 in 2015
  • In 2014, out of 174 countries, India was ranked 85, with a score of 38
  • In 2012 and 2013, India’s score was 36 for each year
  • In 2013, India’s score was 36 and it was ranked 94
  • Therefore, not only has India improved its performance 2014 onwards but it is doing much better now
  • The two-notch dip in 2017 is because of one additional state above and one state moving up on the list
  • In sum, not only has India’s score improved from 36 in pre-2014 days to 40 now, but India’s rank has also improved from 94 in pre-2014 days to 81 now.

Let us see the GCI tables below:

Therefore, much like the fake propaganda that sections of the media and commentariat spread immediately after the Global Hunger Index came out last year, the release of Transparency International’s Global Corruption Perception Index has also sent some of the same people rushing to spread the same kind of fake propaganda as seen in Ms Ghose’s tweet above.

Barsana painted Saffron ahead of CM Yogi Adityanath’s visit to celebrate Lathmar Holi

0

Ahead of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s visit to the town of Barsana in Mathura district on Saturday, the region is receiving a coat of Saffron. Yogi is expected to participate at the Lathmar Holi program in Barsana from 12 to 5 PM on Saturday, following which he will address a public meeting.

Yogi is expected to reach Mathura on Friday evening and would then proceed to inaugurate the Holi celebrations at Barsana and Nandgaon. Here he is supposed to walk about 500 meters to the Rani Mahal where Gopis used to play Holi with Lord Krishna. He is also expected to participate in a Yamuna Aarti later in the day.

With Yogi also scheduled to participate in this event, the Nagar Panchayat has left no stones unturned and apart from cleaning the city has also embarked upon a “saffronisation” of the building and walls.

Apart from being given a coat of Saffron, Barsana has seen its Priya Kund (water tank) getting filled with water. The road from Priya Kund to Sriji temple has also been repaired.

Lathmar Holi is a age old tradition mainly followed in towns of Barsana and Nandgaon near Mathura based on the tale of Lord Krishna. It is said that Lord Krishna who hailed from Nandgaon, visited Radha who lived in Barsana. Here he is believed to have teased Radha and her friends who took offence and drove him out of Barsana.

Thus every year a few days before Holi, this scene is recreated with men from Nandgaon visiting Barsana, where women are ready with sticks waiting for them. They then proceed to hurl sticks on them and those unable to escape are forced to wear a dress and dance. The festival of Lathmar Holi goes on for 40 days.

As per local reports, the areas visible from Yogi’s meeting centre, the Rangili Gali and all those landmarks which will be visited by Yogi are being coated in saffron. It is the first time Barsana’s streets are witnessing a paint job ahead of Holi.

Here are some of the pictures shared by media websites:

Incidentally, such a saffronisation was also noticed in Lucknow, where the walls of state Haj office received an overnight coat saffron, which was then subsequently repainted. As a result of this, the Yogi government removed the incumbent Haj Committee secretary, following a notice over how were the walls painted saffron and why were they repainted.

How the latest FATF financial sanctions will hurt Pakistan

0

Even as detractors continued to spread fake news , the Modi government pulled off a big diplomatic victory at the FATF (Financial Action Task Force) plenary in Paris. We had reported how Pakistan and anti-Modi figures had prematurely commented on the issue based on fake news. But, the outcome of the plenary came out only today.

A former White House and Pentagon official, Joushua White analysed the impact of these sanctions in a series of Tweets. In his first two tweets he said that the decision was part of wider American strategy to make Pakistan behave. He also hinted that these sanctions would make it difficult for Pakistan to raise money in international markets and exert pressure on its foreign reserves.

He went on to hint that USA can use its influence in global institutions to hurt Pakistan in future as well. This reflects well on Indian diplomatic efforts in convincing the Trump administration regarding terrorists activities in Pakistan.

The former US official also highlighted that USA was warning Pakistan ever since it was removed from grey list in 2015. But Pakistan had not been paying attention to these warning. He also highlighted the significance of USA and UK co-sponsoring the sanctions.

Lastly he highlighted how China did not come to protect Pakistan. China had initially objected to the sanctions, but withdrew its objection reportedly under intense pressure from the US. This is a huge development as China has been protecting Pakistan on Masood Azhar sanctions at UNSC for past few years.

All in all it seems like Modi government has achieved a comprehensive diplomatic victory at FATF against Pakistan.
