Congress posts insensitive tweet on Sridevi’s death, deletes after fans angered

0

Even as the country was mourning the untimely death of Sridevi, Congress’s social media handle was busy is trying to gain political mileage out of the incident. This is yet another goof in a series of false steps Congress has taken in the social media space. The official handle of Congress, tweeted the following:

Social media users and fans of the actress took severe offence at the last line in the tweet. They saw it as a move to politicise the death of the star, and to gain mileage from the unfortunate incident:

Owing to the severe criticism it received, Congress social media handle eventually deleted the tweet. This tweet goes to show once again how Congress does not leave any opportunity of using any incident for their political benefit. Even the dead are not spared!

Sridevi redefined what an actress could and could not do

0

I have grown up on a healthy diet of Hindi cinema. I owe my dramatic behaviour to my childhood spent watching films on Doordarshan (and later Zee). Today when I woke up to news of Sridevi’s death, a part of me could not believe it. Just yesterday I was stalking her Instagram account and soaking in the gorgeousness she is… was.

I am not a film critic, and I do not watch films to judge them for their cinematic brilliance. I am a regular viewer, who watches them for entertainment. So when I think about my favourite films of Sridevi, I think of Chaalbaaz, where my constant fear whenever I attempt to put on make up is I hope I don’t look like Amba.

Then there is Chandni, where Sridevi looked ethereal. I had all plans of singing this song when I got married and generally freak out the in laws.

And Lamhe, which was way ahead of its time. It still remains one of my absolute favourite Yash Chopra films. Sridevi effortlessly played the role of mature Pallavi and the younger, yet another generation Pooja in the film.

Her father, Ayyapan Yanger, had passed away while she was shooting for Lamhe. With 90% shoot of the film over, Sridevi had to leave for Chennai as soon as she heard of the news. On returning after the last rites, she shot a comedy scene with Waheeda Rehman. Sridevi’s mother passed away when she was shooting for her film Judaai and in another unconventional move, though it is Hindu custom that son lights the funeral pyre, Sridevi performed the last rites. She was a thorough professional and set her own rules.

Her journey in the film industry has also been an interesting one. While many child actors faded away, Sridevi was one of the few actors to transition from a child actor to successful actress. She also managed to be one of the few actors to move successfully from South Indian movies to Bollywood.

In 1983, at the beginning of her adult career, she took the risk of playing autistic child-woman in Sadma. I still cry when I see the film. For 14 long years she ruled Bollywood acting against all top stars. A testament to her dominance was the movie Chaalbaaz, where two male superstars like Sunny Deol & Rajnikant played second fiddle to Sridevi’s double role. It isn’t much of a secret that she had an affair with the much married Boney Kapoor with whom she got pregnant and in 1996, eventually married him and bid farewell to her careeer at her peak, to start and raise a family.

Most of us had thought that would the last of her but she did something unexpected again. She made a grand comeback in 2012, not with a side role but a leading role, at an age of 48 in English Vinglish which was a runaway hit! Her latest film Mom, too, won accolades.

Today, with Sridevi’s passing, a part of my childhood has died. I pray for strength to the family and peace for her soul. Om Shanti.

The ones defending Papon have no soul, have no decency and certainly have no spine

0

Keeping track of the happenings in the world is certainly a soul-crushing job. You read about death, rapes, hate and treachery almost on a daily basis. Yesterday was of course no different.

As the day progressed, news of Papon the singer brazenly kissing a young girl on the lips emerged. Papon is a ‘mentor’ in some reality TV show, where he and his mentees, little kids, were celebrating Holi in what appeared to be a van. While the girl was laughing, singing and making merry, Papon proceeded to make a gun gesture on her face, smear colour on her cheeks, hold her face between his thumb and the rest of his fingers and kiss her on the lips. After that, he turns to whoever was filming the incident, asks aghast if the ‘Facebook live’ is still on, and upon being informed that it is, asks the fellow to switch if off with a guilty look on his face. Before this, the fellow filming the incident asked, “ye kya ho raha hai” (what is going on), and that is exactly what my sentiments are at this point in time. What the hell is going on?

As if the video wasn’t horrifying enough, there were elements who then jumped into Papon’s defence with the usual humbug arguments that we have heard a million times over. There were various lines of argument taken while defending Papon, and as difficult as it may be for me personally to approach each line of defence dispassionately, I have got to try.

1. It was a mistake, he meant to kiss her cheeks

One of the first arguments being presented it that Papon is an affectionate loving guru, who merely wanted to kiss the child on her cheek and it was by mistake that he ended up kissing her on the lips. When one thinks of this situation dispassionately and logically, what would a man’s first reaction be if he ends up kissing a child on the lips by mistake? Move away immediately? A hint of the ‘my god what have I done’ expression? A reflex jerk tearing himself away from the girl? Perhaps. In the video, however, one sees Papon linger for just a moment and move away slowly as if nothing untoward has happened. To me, it certainly doesn’t seem like a man who mistakenly violated that girl’s space.

2. Guru Shishya affection

In our illustrious culture, the guru-shishya relationship is a sacred relationship that is perhaps accorded higher value than that of a parent-child equation. Especially for artists, it is common and in fact customary to touch a Guru’s feet or at least bow in reverence to seek blessings. I am personally yet to come across a Guru who thinks kissing young mentees is a way to display affection. In fact, as a parent, I can say without the shadow of a doubt that I would perhaps go into a murderous tizzy if I found that my child’s guru indulges in such ‘unconventional ways’ to display his affection for my child. Thus, this asinine argument to defend Papon falls flat.

3. Intention is paramount and Papon is a “nice” guy

Yes. In the eyes of the law, the intention is certainly paramount to establish guilt. For example, if someone commits a murder, it is imperative that the law establishes, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the murder wasn’t committed in self-defence. But at the same time, let’s assume a man was caught flashing a woman in the middle of the road. Would his intention negate the crime? Would he be able to use “I just wanted to show off my penis” reason as a legitimate defence? If a man was caught raping a woman on camera, would he be able to then say “oops, when she said no, I thought she said yes and my intention wasn’t to rape but make love” in a bid to defend himself and negate the crime? Why then is it acceptable for Papon to say “my intention wasn’t to molest” when his despicable act has clearly been caught on camera? While following the letter of the law is paramount, why then are people resorting to using that letter as an excuse to not only subvert the law, per which he wouldn’t be roaming free but negate the spirit of the law which is to protect the weakest members of the society and deliver justice? Why has the question of a man exploiting his fiduciary relationship with a child not been raised by the very crusaders of the law? Why is Papon’s intention so important when his act has been caught on tape, as compared to that pervert on the road or a rapist who has been caught in the act? Because he is “nice person”? What is the measurement of “nice”? Enough to outweigh statutory rape? If being “nice” was a defence in the eyes of the law, how many convicts would go scot free? Do “nice” men not do unspeakable things? And when “nice” men do unspeakable things, should they be let off the hook because they are “nice”?

4. The girl herself, her parents, other kids, their parents all love Papon. Nothing bad happened

Aside from being dismayed by this defence, I’m shocked that most people who have the luxury of emotional distance can’t see how this entire incident is transpiring. Firstly, the obvious fact that the perpetrator in this situation is the one who holds unlimited influence on how the child’s life progresses. One has to remember here, that the children who become a part of such reality shows are obviously innocently ambitious, as are their parents. When an entire herd of producers, directors, contestants, parents of those contestants etc are trying to hush things up, perhaps for the sake of their own vested interests, by saying nothing bad happened, how is it that we expect that little girl to stand up for her own little self and say something bad actually did happen. There are adult women who oft shy away from reporting their abusers for fear of ostracisation, stigma, professional compulsions etc. These are the standards which are being expected from a little girl, failing which, the crime caught on tape can be negated? Is this how godless we as a society have truly become? Is this how hypocritical and shallow our crusaders are? We understand peer pressure for simple habits like smoking and using cuss words when it comes to our own children, but when it comes to someone else’s child being molested, we expect that child to stand up against the entire world and take on the establishment she aspires to be a part of? We expect her parents to risk stigmatising their little girl while the rest of the crew hammers it down their throat that nothing bad really happens? Is it so unthinkable that the girl and her parents are under unspeakable pressure? One we may not fully understand?

5. Don’t ruin his career for one mistake

With this argument, very conveniently, it somehow becomes about the perpetrator and not the victim. Child abuse, in all it’s forms, is not a “mistake”. His career doesn’t and cannot take precedence over the safety of a child who was under his care. Whether his career will be over or not, pretty much depends on his “fans”, how many ever are left of them, anyway. But if a crime has been committed, that crime cannot be brushed under the carpet simply because his life would be ruin and of course, “he is a nice guy”. The concern here has to be the child and whether children are safe in being his mentees. It is thus shocking the kind of sympathy which some are trying to create for a grown man who “made the mistake” of kissing a child on the lips, and when he realised he’s being recorded in the act, urged the videographer to stop recording with a stunned, foolish, guilty look on his face. Some “mistake”, this.

Most child molesters have easy access to children. We see how pastors and caregivers sexually assault the child and even brainwash them to accept it as a new normal. Such molesters make the best profilers. They know exactly how to choose their victims and exactly how to convince them that it is merely their affection which the child is experiencing. Most child abusers appear shy and trustworthy. They work hard to build a bond with their victims. They play with the child. Bring them gifts. Promise the horizon. And slowly, as they gain their trust, the exploitation begins. And heaven forbids the molester turns out to be someone in a position of power. Power to influence their dreams. Their ambitions. Their lives. It’s a heady, dangerous mix. The ones defending him say, “oh, the kids and their parents know Papon. He is no stranger. How could he do this”. I wonder if these people are aware that over 90% of rapes are committed by people known to the victim? Not just in India, the world over. Are they aware that this notion of “Papon dada wouldn’t hurt us” is perpetuating a dangerous situation? Does their soul not scream out in a bid to wake up their sleeping conscience? Can we expect this understanding from people who normalise paedophilia when it suits their agenda?

Did the Papon defenders for a moment ask Papon why he was so shocked when he realised the Facebook Live recording is still on? Did they ask him what has him molesting a child got to do with him being a nice person who is happily married and his kids? Did anyone ask if there is some sort of a rule that only unmarried bachelors turn out to be child molesters?

Or is it that Papon defenders lack the spine to call out a man in power? Perhaps how they normalised Milind Soman dating an underaged girl? Or perhaps how they kept quiet when Deccan Chronicle normalised a comrade’s Paedophilia?

A child got molested on tape. A man, in a powerful position, one from which he can alter a little girls course of life, kissed a child on the lips. When he found out that his act had been recorded on tape, he freaked out and asked for the recording to be stopped. When he kissed the girl on the lips, he wasn’t apologetic or horrified, which he would be if it were a mistake. He lingered for a second and moved away slowly. These are indisputable facts. And if someone still chooses to defend this probable predator, I have no qualms in saying that they are soulless, godless, spineless and bereft of any decency.

I have deliberately not added the video of the incident or a video that emerged on Facebook with parents talking about “what a nice guy” Papon is. I don’t believe in revealing the minor girl’s identity.

ED attaches 21 properties of Nirav Modi worth 523 crores including an Alibaug farmhouse

0

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) yesterday attached various real estate properties belonging to Nirav Modi and the companies under him. The total worth of the properties is estimated to be around 523.72 crores.

The crackdown on immovable properties began after the government moved to the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to confiscate all the properties owned by Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi. Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) also seems to have moved the NCLT for attachment of assets belonging to Nirav Modi’s wife and brother.

All these properties include a farmhouse in Alibaug, a solar power plant, 135 acres of land in Ahmed Nagar and residential and office buildings in Mumbai and Pune:

This property seizure comes after the ED had frozen Rs 30 crore in a bank account and seized shares worth 13.86 crores in a Nirav Modi company. They had also made an unusual discovery where they found a huge quantity of imported watches stacked in 176 steel almirahs, 158 corrugated boxes & 60 plastic containers.

Besides this luxury cars belonging to Nirav Modi and his companies too were seized. Mutual funds worth 7.8 crores of Nirav Modi and 86.72 crores of Mehul Choksi group were also frozen by the ED.

All this also comes after the multiple raids conducted by ED last week where they had seized gold, diamonds and gems worth a total of Rs 5649 crores from several locations across the country on 15th and 16th February. On the next day, they had attached diamonds and jewellery worth Rs 25 crores from various locations in India taking the tally up to 5674 crores.

The Income Tax department had on Thursday had also attached an SEZ property belonging to the Gitanjali Group in Hyderabad. The property was valued at 1200 crores. The cumulative credit balance in the bank accounts of the Gitanjali Group was estimated at 145.74 crores

The attachments of valuables and properties including cash and stocks of both Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi groups, as per rough calculations stands at more than Rs 7500 crores, excluding the value of cars and other luxury goods.

However certain experts have cast doubts on the real value of the diamonds seized, claiming Nirav Modi’s diamonds and jewellery were always overpriced and even low grade in some cases and the ED’s estimate is based on the invoices and tag value mentioned for the items.

The CBI had already arrested several people in connections to the 11,400 crores PNB Fraud including Nirav Modi’s key aides. The Ministry of External Affairs had issued summons to both Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi while suspending their passports for four weeks. The lookout for both Nirav Modi and Choksi is still on.

Sohan Shira, most wanted terrorist in Meghalaya shot dead by police

0

Sohan Shira, Meghalaya Police’s most wanted Garo National Liberation Army chief, was shot dead today in an encounter operation led by Meghalaya Police in Dobu Agalgre of East Garo Hills. Shira was believed to be involved in the killing of NCP candidate for Willimanagar, Jonathone N Sangma, on February 18.

In a big achievement for the police forces, Sohan was shot dead at around 11:50 am at Dobu A’chakpek during a joint encounter with the Garo Hills Police and Meghalaya’s Special Force-10 commandos.

The GNLA was formed by Sohan D Shira and Champion Sangma in 2009. They launched the outfit, originally to fight for a ‘sovereign Garoland’ in western areas of Meghalaya. However, slowly, it turned into a terror outfit with many instances of killings, abduction, extortion, bomb blasts and attacks on security forces.
Champion Sangma, who was a DySP of Meghalaya Police, later returned to the mainstream.

Mani Shankar Aiyer’s suspension seems like a damage control sham by Rahul Gandhi after this expose

0

Mani Shankar Aiyer, former Union Minister, found himself in hot waters during the Gujarat elections when he used casteist remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Congress Party had then suspended him for his words. However, he was seen entering the AICC headquarters despite the fact that the suspension has not been revoked. The assured manner in which he was seen entering the Congress headquarters has left everyone wondering if his suspension was merely a gimmick for the purpose of damage control.

Shehzad Poonawallah, Congress leader who has rebelled against the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, has alleged that Aiyer was still a part of the Congress circuit and very much a respected member of the party despite his suspension.

In the second part of the expose, Times Now has revealed an insider saying that Mani Shankar Aiyer is in touch with Rahul Gandhi and is helping his campaign in the North East.

Rahul Gandhi had tweeted after Mani Shankar Aiyer’s “neech” remark that he did not “appreciate” the language used by him against an elected PM and expected him to apologize for his words. However, it seems Congress culture has a knack for encouraging such nasty comments on Narendra Modi as evidenced by Sonia Gandhi’s “Maut ka Saudagar” remark.

The latest expose by Times Now comes only days after Mani Shankar Aiyer was attacking India’s foreign policy on Pakistani soil and complimenting the Pakistani administration for working towards peace and blamed India for the lack of dialogue between the two countries. The expose will come as a further embarrassment to Rahul Gandhi who has had a turbulent beginning to his tenure as the Party President. And it is revealed that the condemnation of Aiyer on Twitter, which was accompanied by a snide remark against the BJP, was merely a carefully crafted strategy to manage public perception.

Andhra CM Chandrababu Naidu to Sreenivasan Jain: Your agenda is sensationalism

0

The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Chandrababu Naidu, in an interview, has brilliantly countered NDTV’s Sreenivasan Jain for always working on ‘his agenda’.

The incident happened last week when Sreenivasan Jain was interviewing Chandrababu Naidu in an event organised by The Hindu. Chandrababu Naidu was highlighting his commitment to Andhra Pradesh’s development and overall growth.

Sreenivasan Jain began by asking him about the alleged injustice to Andhra Pradesh while creating a separate state of Telangana. To which Naidu replied that the bifurcation by the then Congress government has been done in the most unscientific manner and without following any set norms. He added that injustice has been done to Andhra Pradesh while creating Telangana.

However, Sreenivasan Jain moved to political motivations and manoeuvres. He asked Naidu whether the Telugu Desam Party is still the part of the NDA government in the centre. Chandrababu Naidu’s reply was swift. He replied that his party colleague Gajapati Raju is a minister in the central government and said that Jain should not have any doubts regarding his party’s association with NDA while Gajapati Raju is sitting there before him.

Naidu did not stop there. He went on to say that Jain will always have his own agenda. He added that he himself has his agenda too. But his agenda is agenda of the people while the agenda of Jain and journalists like him will always be media focus and sensationalism. Naidu added that in his forty years long political career he has been watching local, national and international journalists and it has always been the same.

Naidu’s brilliant answer made the audience break into applause and laughter.

Yogi pulls a Modi on journalists when asked about celebrating Eid

0

Journalists were under the impression it would be a good idea to question Yogi Adityanath on his participation in the celebration of the Hindu festivals of Holi and Diwali but not of Eid. However, the Chief Minister was blunt in his reply and said that he was a Hindu and has a right to Freedom of Religion as well.

Yogi Adityanath said, “In the past 11 months, I have not stopped anyone from celebrating Eid nor have I stopped them from celebrating Christmas. Everyone expresses faith in their own way. Everyone has the right to Freedom of Religion. At the same time, we also have the right to promote such festivals on the international stage for the purpose of tourism.”

This value which has been upheld by Yogi Adityanath is a reminder of the time in 2011 when then Chief Minister Narendra Modi had refused to wear a skull cap offered by Muslim Cleric during his sadhbhavana fast. When questioned, he had said :

“If by wearing a cap one becomes a symbol of unity then nobody has ever seen Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel and Pandit Nehru wearing this kind of a cap. Actually, a kind of deformity has come in Indian politics where anything can be done for appeasement. My job is to respect all communities, respect the values of all communities but I have to accept my own values. I live with my values. Hence, I don’t bluff people by wearing a cap, or getting clicked. But I believe that if somebody shows disrespect to another person then he should be given the strictest punishment,”

Yogi Adityanath has gained immense popularity with the people for his flamboyant style of working and the forthrightness with which he answers the media. His responses are always straight to the point and his sharp wit while dealing with journalists has endeared him to large sections of the people. The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh is in Mathura ahead of the Holi celebrations this year. He was in the city to review the security arrangements for the festival of colours and visit Sri Krishna Janmasthan Mandir. He shall participate in the celebration of Lathmar Holi at Barsana.

Congress has nothing to go to the voters with in Karnataka except Siddaramaiah’s misgovernance

0

As Karnataka is ready to go for polls this summer, Congress will face its biggest electoral test as it is the only large state where it is in power. While Rahul Gandhi may have latched on to the agenda of questioning development under the Modi government, governance seems to be the Congress’ Achilles heel in Karnataka. With almost 5 years of a stable government, Congress had failed to deliver on almost all fronts and will most likely face the ire of the electorate over the missed opportunities.

For all the Congress’ rhetoric on farmer welfare, farmers in Karnataka have benefitted little and lost more. Karnataka now has the dubious distinction of being in the top 3 states of India with an extraordinarily high farmer suicide rate. Over 3515 farmers committing suicide in the past five years, almost 2 suicides every day. Between 2014-15 and 2015-16 alone, the number of farmer suicides jumped by 305%. In a state with less than 31% irrigated agricultural land, the lethargy of Siddaramaiah government has led to several important irrigation projects in Singtalur, Mulawad, Bellary-Nala and Koppal to remain incomplete. Less than 11% of the drought relief funds provided by the Central government have been actually distributed to the drought-stricken farmers. The ostentatious announcement of the loan waiver in 2017 turned out to be an eyewash as many farmers were denied the benefit due to stringent eligibility criteria. North Karnataka and Hyderabad Karnataka regions are traditionally water scarce but they have also seen woeful neglect. The Congress government has not even spent the entire amount of the Rs.10,492 Crore it has allotted to the region since 2013-14. Few missed the insensitivity of the government towards the farmers when in the hot summer of 2016, 5000 litres of water was used to “settle dust” on the travel route of the Chief Minister when he visited the drought-affected Bilagi taluka.

Similarly, under the Congress government, Karnataka’s cities have worsened. The persistent traffic problem in Bengaluru remains unmitigated with the situation of roads reaching their rock bottom. In 2015-16, the Siddaramaiah government claimed to have spent Rs. 2000 crore to rid the city of potholes, however few in the city would claim any better experience on the roads. Less than half of the private properties in the city are connected to a sewage disposal system, with a large volume of untreated waste being dumped into the city’s lakes. The results invariably are frothing of the lakes which have now become an almost annual phenomenon. Nor is the city safe anymore. In 2015, Bengaluru had the 3rd highest number of cognizable crimes amongst Indian cities. In 2017, instances of major crimes spiked by 28% in Bengaluru. Bengaluru has also seen an increase of 186% in rape cases in 2017.

Throughout the state too, criminals have had a free run under Siddaramaiah. The recent case of the violence perpetrated by the son of a Congress MLA is only one example of the failure of law and order in the state. Out of the 686 cases of gang-rape registered in the state in 2016, not even one has resulted in a conviction. Karnataka has also reported the second highest number of political and communal riots in the country. In 2017, the instances of riots increased by 40%. The slow progress in investigating the murders of Hindu activist is being seen by many as symptomatic of a communal bent which the Congress government has encouraged in criminal investigations.

The Congress dispensation has also been marred by a series of corruption scandals and scams. A study by the Centre for Media Studies flagged Karnataka as the most corrupt state in the country. Ministers in the state cabinet have been tainted with corruption scandals, land grabbing allegations and giving undue favours. The CAG blamed the Public Works Department (PWD) for misusing Rs. 76 crore out of the allotted Rs 250 crore for fraudulent payments for the road work in Magadi. Another scam amounting to Rs. 39 Crore in the Minor Irrigation Department involving fake bills was uncovered by the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). The honest bureaucrats who opposed such immoral syphoning of public money have been hounded with transfers. Some like D.K. Ravi and Dy SP Ganapathy have been driven to suicide after being allegedly harassed by corrupt ministers.

This misgovernance has taken its toll on the development prospects of the state which had a robust IT industry and investments to be proud of. The rate of economic growth in the state (6.9%) has consistently remained below the national rate of growth (7.1%) over the last five years.

With clearly apparent misgovernance and few achievements to showcase, the Congress has little to go back to the electors. The poor performance of 5 years has managed to alienate almost all social groups in the state, a situation which Siddaramaiah failed to correct in his last budget too. This weak footing on the governance agenda could well cost Congress its last remaining government in a big state.

‘We know how to deal with such elements’ AMU students union on invitation to President Kovind

0

The Aligarh Muslim University Students Union has registered a strong protest against University extending an invitation to President Kovind for having ‘Sanghi mindset that is against humanity’.

President Kovind is invited to Aligarh Muslim University to be the chief guest at the annual convocation to be held on 7th March. Kovind would be the first President to attend the convocation at AMU in 32 years after Giani Zail Singh.

However, the students’ union warned the university against inviting any ‘RSS functionary’ at the University’s convocation. The union has reportedly warned that the AMU authorities will only be responsible for consequences in case any RSS functionary attends the functioned. AMUSU secretary Mohd Fahad, in a veiled threat, has said, ‘If any Sanghi or anyone associated with Gandhi’s assassination and demolition of the Babri Majid attend the convocation, they will not be treated well as we know how to deal with such elements,’ Fahad was reportedly speaking of President Kovind’s 2010 statement where he had allegedly said ‘Islam and Christianity are alien’ to India. AMUSU, however, said they respect the constitutional position President Kovind holds.

Last year in October, AMU had protested against an invitation extended to a minister in Yogi Adityanath government for inviting a BJP leader.
