Raghuram Rajan rejects AAP’s offer of a Rajya Sabha seat, says will continue in academics

0

On Wednesday the AAP made a pretty sensational manoeuvre by approaching former RBI Governor and famous economist Raghuram Rajan to offer him a Rajya Sabha seat.

3 Rajya Sabha seats from Delhi fall vacant in Delhi next January and AAP having the brute majority of 66 seats in the 70 member assembly, is firm favourites to grab them. Currently the incumbents include Congress nominees, Dr Karan Singh, Janardhan Dwivedi and Pervez Hashmi, who would be completing their six year term on 27 January 2018.

Reports claimed that AAP wasn’t planning on filling those seats with its leaders and wanted to nominate rank outsiders like Rajan, an eminent jurist and a known face from the field of social service.

This may have been a strategy of the AAP to provide a new face to the party, going into the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

But this plan isn’t off to a good start as, based on reports [1][2] Raghuram Rajan has declined AAP’s offer as he plans to continue to remain in academics. As per reports, the communication department of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business while speaking on behalf of Rajan stated that:

While Professor Rajan is engaged in a variety of educational activities in India, he has no plans to leave his full-time academic job at the University of Chicago

It remains to be seen how AAP takes this possible setback to its plans and whether it will line up another distinguished face as a replacement.

Rajya Sabha has in recent days emerged as one of the key plans of the AAP at-least for the near future.

We had recently speculated how this upcoming vacancy in the state’s 3 Rajya Sabha seats might be the reason why the party is trying all tactics to delay a verdict in the “Office for profit” case, which might lead to the the disqualification of 21 of its MLAs. Such a disqualification might mean that the party may struggle to win those seats.

Social media slams journalist Faye DSouza for spreading fake news in the Ryan school murder matter

0

The Ryan International school in Gurugram witnessed a chilling murder of a class 2 student named Pradyuman in September this year. The initial investigation by the Gurugram police had brought forth a chilling theory that, a school bus conductor had tried to sexually assault the child before killing him.

Soon the CBI was roped into this investigation which has resulted in a sensational twist into the matter. As per reports, the CBI has now arrested a class XI boy of the same school who as per reports killed the poor child in order to force the postponement of an upcoming examination and a parent-teacher meeting.

The Gurugram police commissioner has in response now claimed that they aren’t fully aware of the evidence present with the CBI and claimed that they had carried out a probe in an early stage.

While this whole episode was playing out, Faye DSouza the editor of mirror now, possibly decided to add even more sensationalism to the whole matter by tweeting this:

She almost out of nowhere put forth the motive behind the crime, even though as per reports, her speculation could not be further from the truth.

As per a Deccan Herald report on the incident, the CBI has ruled out the sexual assault angle and further ascribed the crime as the accused’s effort to get an exam and parent teacher meeting postponed for the day.

Also ANI carried a quotation about the CBI negating the emergence of any sexual assault theory during the investigation:

The press release issued by the CBI merely mentions the arrest of the boy in the case CBI’s actions in the matter so far without shedding any light about the possible motive. So not only has the agency not official hinted about any instance of sexual assault it hasn’t even laid out a possible motive for the murder.

People as a result reacted to Faye DSouza’s tweet and called for a retraction:

This raises the question as to why would any editor associated with a respectable news channel make such an assertion which adds further sensationalism to an already gruesome case? Would she now either retract or at-least give an explanation as to how she reached the conclusion about sexual assault being a motive in the case?

While news anchors like Faye prioritise sensationalism over facts, once can only imagine what Pradyuman’s parents must be going through during these trying times.

Hope Congress does not censor these hilarious spoofs made on Rahul Gandhi

Twitter is a treasure trove of creative people. One Twitter user who goes by the name Deewan, posted a 4 video spoof series making fun of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and they are hilarious. Watch these videos yourself.

Part 1

Part 2

Our favourite part is from 1:25 towards the end.

Part 3

A personal favourite.

Part 4

Congress has a history of censoring creative freedom when in power but has always been a hypocrite when it comes to ‘freedom of expression’ when in Opposition. Internet is brutal, though, and does not forget. Hence, considering how Congress leaders and propagandists masquerading as journalists have been championing the freedom of expression by encouraging making fun of politicians, we believe Deewan is in no danger for making fun of the Congress leaders and journalists. Keep them coming, Deewan!

Update: Unfortunately we were proven wrong and Deewan was suspended by Twitter in April. Though to the joy of many, he is now back on the social media platform, and you can check out his tweets out here

Delhi pollution woes: People react as Kejriwal and Amarinder Singh are seen passing the buck

0

In recent days Delhi and its surrounding areas have been engulfed in a think layer of smog. The situation is so bad in Delhi that, at about 2 PM on Wednesday, its air quality was measured to be 833 on the air quality index. As per WHO, anything below 50 is considered normal and levels above 300 are considered hazardous.

The deadly air quality has meant that the administration has taken contingency measures like closing schools till Sunday, halting construction activities and banning the entry of trucks into the city. Other measures include quadrupling parking fees and temporarily slashing metro fares during off-peak hours.

All these measures might be moot as one of the main culprits for Delhi’s pollution woes is considered to be stubble burning by farmers in the areas near Delhi-NCR. This compounded with low wind speed and dip in temperature has resulted in this smog as per Anumita Roy Chowdhury, the Executive Director of Centre for Science and Environment (CSE). She also explained that westerly winds brought in this smoke and the easterly winds reduced the temperature and trapped fumes.

While Delhi continues to be plagued by pollution woes, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh were seen active on Twitter, creating a drama and passing the buck when it comes to this issue.

As a possible response to Delhi’s pollution woes, Kejriwal on Wednesday decided to swing into “twitter governance” mode by claiming that he was continuously trying to arrange a meeting with Haryana and Punjab CMs.

To this Amarinder Singh decided to pass the buck on to the centre and asked Kejriwal to share his concern over stubble burning and pollution. He then shockingly claimed that Punjab was helpless in this matter as the state has no money to compensate the farmers for stubble burning.

Such an assertion of Punjab government not having any money, was certainly rich coming from Amarinder Singh as his government had recently decided to take a long term loan of Rs 10,000 crores in order to write off debt of farmers. So this raises the question as to why his government can’t do anything similar when it comes to the stubble burning issue.

But Kejriwal, rather than taking Amarinder Singh to task, decided to play on by agreeing to Amarinder Singh’s assertion that its the centre which needs to take the lead in this matter. He kept urging Amarinder to grant him a meeting and even asked him to give an estimate of the funds required so that they both could “urge” the centre.

Amarinder is yet to get back to Kejriwal on twitter.

While Kejriwal has been trying to attain the moral high ground, his own party leader Sukhpal Singh Khaira who is the leader of opposition in Punjab was recently seen burning paddy-stubble in the state and threatening to continue doing so if farmers’ demands weren’t met.

All this was a bit too much drama for people to take in and they reacted aplenty:

With the never ending pollution woes of the region, one hopes that rather than creating a drama on twitter, these leaders go back to the drawing board in order to formulate an effective long term strategy in dealing with this issue. This and not “Twitter appeals” would be in the interest of the people.

Rahul Gandhi gets welcomed with ‘Modi, Modi’ chants in Surat

0

Rahul Gandhi, who is in poll bound Gujarat to mark one year of demonetisation, today visited textile market in Surat, Gujarat. Much to his embarrassment, he was welcomed with chants of ‘Modi, Modi’ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ despite Gujarat Congress’ efforts to paint demonetisation and GST a complete failure.

This is not it. The 80 year old retired army man, who has been painted as the face of demonetisation, has said that his crying picture was captured when he was pushed by someone and a woman stepped on his foot, and not because of demonetisation, as portrayed.

A tweet posted by Congress Rahul Gandhi had the image of teary eyed Nand Lal, which said even a drop of tear (of citizens) should be considered a warning for the king, as you have not seen the tears turn into oceans.

However, the same has backfired since Nand Lal has gone ahead and praised demonetisation and other steps taken by Narendra Modi.

Rahul Gandhi, while meeting diamond traders in Surat, said that demonetisation and GST has broken the legs of Surat, which is a textile and diamonds hub. However, though demonetisation did bring a setback in the diamond industry, but the shine seems to be returning to the diamond market as digital transactions have made things smoother for the traders.

Clearly, Rahul Gandhi does not seem to be having a good day in Gujarat.

Innovation in a 60 year old Kirana shop, fake business getting hit: A few of demonetisation’s positives

Today marks the 1st anniversary of demonetisation of the erstwhile Rs 500, Rs 1000 notes and opposition have taken it upon themselves to demonise the scheme and its consequential impact.

The opposition is observing today as a “black day” and we reported how they were also furthering their anti-demonetisation rhetoric by sharing a photograph of a crying old man to portray how the scheme had hurt the old and poor.

As subsequently exposed, this photograph was taken out of context and the man was actually wincing in pain because he was pushed by someone and a woman stepped on his foot. He at a personal level is now happy with demonetisation.

The cacophony around this scheme has meant that the truly positive stories regarding this scheme have failed to hog the limelight. Here are a few:

A TOI report recounts how Vishnu Desai a Kirana shop owner who has operated his shop for about 60 years, found the basics of his business challenged when PM Modi announced the decision to demonetise RS 500, RS 1000 notes. But the Panjim based Kirana shop owner decided to innovate.

In the upcoming days, 85 year old Desai and his son learnt the basics and started accepting payment with the help of mobile wallet Paytm. After making this change, the customers asked as to why did they not accept credit or debit cards, based on the feedback, the Desais installed a POS machine.

They later decided to make further tech innovations like install CCTV cameras and use a 4G smartphone to manage their transactions.

A year on, the Desais find online transaction much more convenient as not only there is no fear of robbery, the hassles of calculating the change and tallying the cash at the end of the day has been eliminated.

Demonetisation hasn’t only helped people become more tech friendly. It as per reports has also dealt a fatal blow to the counterfeit currency bastion in Kaliachak, West Bengal.

A place once called, “India’s counterfeit capital”, Kaliachak has recorded the lowest counterfeit note seizure in the past year. As per security agencies, fakes notes worth Rs 55.66 lakh have been seized post demonetisation. This means a marked decrease from total seizures of Rs 1.48 crore in 2016, Rs 2.61 crore in 2015 and Rs 1.80 crore in 2014. The total number of smuggling syndicates have also come down to 12 from earlier 20.

The authorities though feel that a real change in this region can only be brought after locals are provided decent alternative employment so that they aren’t lured into the world of criminal activities.

We had also reported yesterday how post demonetisation there was a 17% increase in e-filing of Income Tax returns, which as per an Income Tax official, was due to the IT department asking people to file their returns for coming clean with respect to their post demonetisation transactions.

Whatever may be the long term impact of this scheme, the healthy share of positives in the short term, should be used as a motivation for spurring further innovation in the Indian monetary sphere, in the coming years.

One year on, what has Demonetization achieved: A video

0

On 8th November 2016, At 8PM, the Prime Minister of India addressed the nation and declared notes of 500 and 1000 denomination as illegal tenders. In one swift motion, all that high denomination cash was rendered useless, to be deposited in the bank and exchanged with the new 500 and 2000 denomination notes. The country took a few moments to recuperate from the initial shock, but once it did, most people were appreciative of this bold economic reform that wiped out the cash black market overnight. It was almost like pressing the reset button for the black market.

While the Nation stood in line patiently, the political class was busy scurrying to create mass hysteria. They mocked. They questioned. They rumor mongered. They turned every death in the entire country into a “demonetisation related death”. Heck, they even turned an aged army veteran, who cried because someone stepped on his toe, as the ‘face of demonetisation’. They projected him as a troubled marginalized poor man, tortured by the draconian policies of the Modi Government. He has clarified that he was rather appreciative of the scheme, and as a disciplined soldier, will do as the government commands.

They naysayers failed. The world looked towards India mesmerized. Watching in amazement, as India made this transition with patience, compassion and most importantly, hope.

A year on, we at OpIndia would like to analyse what it is, that a step like Demonetisation achieved. What were the positives. Was it worth the effort? Was it worth the Nation’s patience?

We think it was, and we explain why, with this video :

We thank Mr. Ashutosh Muglikar for this extremely informative video.

Half-truths and whole lies: How Congress Social media handle tried to debunk Demonetization

Congress’ “reinvigorated” social media presence, and Rahul Gandhi’s “coming of age” on social media, have been under scrutiny lately. From campaigns which have backfired, frequent goof ups, to Rahul using bots as virtual steroids to boost his social media influence, we have seen it all. Or have we.

On the anniversary of demonetization, Congress launched a barrage of data from its social media handle, to claim demonetization was a failure. In many cases, the “data” was iffy.

For example, let us see the following tweet:

Looking at the above tweet, one would readily assume that yes, India’s GDP from agriculture fell off a cliff since Dec 2016 quarter, which is the Demonetization quarter. Thus Demonetization hurt agriculture. But, if we see the same data for the past 3 years, the trend is very similar:

Did we have a demonetization exercise every year? No. This trend in Agri GDP, which is seen annually, is simply down to the fact that Agri GDP is seasonal is nature. An increase in output after the harvest season following the June-September monsoons, always leads to higher Agri GDP in the subsequent quarter.

Next, a chart tells us that GDP from Public Administration has collapsed. Congress claims that even though Demonetization was during the December quarter, the “massive” fall happened in the June quarter.

Again, the same data, if seen for a longer horizon, say from 2011-12 onward, shows a different picture:

Once you see the above 2 charts, its clear, that Congress has cherry-picked data from the last 3 bars, zoomed in, and shown us only those 3 bars. Further, the Congress has done some clever charting to show the massive fall from March quarter to June quarter. As one can see from the longer horizon chart, even this low GDP from June quarter, is far more than anything UPA achieved since 2011-2012. And it also is NDA’s 4th best performance out of all the quarters it was in power. Not so bad now is it?

Next, Congress talks about the Consumer Price Index:

Once again, a longer horizon shows the CPI rising every quarter:

But that is not the point here. Here, the Congress has used the CPI to show a rise, whereas economists normally compare the rate of change of CPI i.e. Inflation. Egs: We often read that Inflation has “slowed down” to around 3% or 4%. This means inflation exists (i.e. the CPI is increasing), but inflation is much lower (i.e. CPI is increasing slowly), i.e. Prices are rising much slower.

Thus, when we see the Inflation rate (as against the CPI), we realise that since 2014, India’s inflation has cooled down significantly:

The next chart used by Congress is on India’s industrial production:

Firstly, a sloping line drawn even when August IIP is a robust 4.3 is ridiculous. Secondly, the fall in IIP actually coincides with GST implementation i.e. June 2017, when most companies had destocked, in anticipation of the regime change. Nothing to do with demonetization. If there was a demonetization impact, it would have shown much earlier, and there would not have been the revival we see in August 2017 i.e. when GST broadly settled. Further, a longer horizon view again exposes Congress:

Another example of retarded logic by showing cherry picked data is how Indian government revenues are portrayed using Year-to-Date data, without showing earlier years:

The above chart, if taken for any of the last 5 years will show the exact same trends, did we have demonetization all these years?

Lastly, see how Congress claims “demonetization killed the Indian Economy: India’s Consumer Spending shrinks. India’s poor have no money”. Although the supply of cash was strained in November, December and in January, “India’s poor had no money” only from April, May and June, as per Congress.

The same data, plotted for 5 years, shows that due to the seasonal nature of demand in India, every single year “India’s poor” have a shortage of money around the same time, thus causing a fall in consumer spending.

One wrong analysis could have been a mistake, two could have been coincidence, but when Congress has repeatedly committed the same “errors” in analysing economic data, it only points to one thing: Congress believes Indians are naive fools who can be fed cherry-picked data, padded up just to suit a narrative.

Now for the fun part, scroll up and see the source of every chart the Congress has put up, and the source of the other charts as well. All the charts, Congress’ as well as those which expose Congress, come from the same source: tradingeconomics.com, thus eliminating the argument that the data could be different. And also reinforcing the fact that Congress has dishonestly put out half truths and whole lies. Or maybe these charts were vetted by the great economist ex-PM?

Petition calls for an FIR against Mulayam Singh Yadav for ordering police firing on Kar Sevaks in Ayodhya

0

The past might come back to haunt SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, if a petition in the Supreme Court has its way.

As per reports [1][2], a petition was filed in the Supreme Court on Tuesday which sought that an FIR be filed against Mulayam Singh Yadav, the then Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for ordering police firing on “Kar Sewaks” in Ayodhya back on 30th October, 1990.

These Kar Sewaks had assembled in the city for carrying out a peaceful agitation for the construction of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

The petitioner in this case is Rana Sangram Singh, a resident of Lucknow district who has challenged a May 3, 2016 order of the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench which rejected his plea in this matter.

The reason cited for this rejection was that the incident had not taken place in the territorial jurisdiction of Lucknow. Thus the High Court said, it could not direct the registration of cognisable offences on the basis of statements made by leaders of political parties to their constituents.

Rana Sangram Singh wants that an FIR be registered against Mulayam based on his statement dated 6th February 2014, wherein he had said that he ordered the police firing, which had resulted in the death of 16 people.

In fact, the SP supremo had justified his action as recently as 2016. Speaking at a book launch, Mulayam sought to justify the firing that claimed lives of several Kar-Sevaks by saying :

“We had to fire. When I tried to justify my action, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members called me the murderer of humanity. If we had not fired at them, imagine what the Muslim population would have thought. Then how would I justify my position as chief minster.”

The disputed land in Ayodhya has also recently been in the news for other reasons.

This August, the Shia Wakf Board had in a petition to the Supreme Court stated that the Babri Masjid was built after demolishing a temple which stood there – a fact that is denied by Sunni board and some leftist historians.

Recent days have also seen multiple claimants emerge, who have staked claim over this site, which currently is under the ownership of the Sunni Central Wakf Board.

First the Shia Wakf board had put forth historical arguments in the Supreme Court affidavit that the Masjid was largely constructed by Shia Muslims and thus should come under Shia Wakf properties.

If this wasn’t enough, a person claiming to be a Mughal descendent came out of the blue to stake a claim over the Babri masjid site. The decedent named Prince Yakub Habeebuddin Tucy claims to be the DNA proven descendent of the last Mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar.

Congress leader Shehzad Poonawalla stoops to a new low

0

Congress leader Shehzad Poonawalla, who is not related to the other famous and respectful Poonawallas, today stooped to a new low in humanity.

In a chilling development, the CBI today said that it was a class 11 student of Ryan International School was arrested for the brutal murder of class 2 student Pradyuman in September this year. The CBI team had apprehended the 16 year old student last night. The CBI, after taking over investigation from Gurugram Police, interrogated the 16 year old on basis of the CCTV footage which allegedly shows him coming out of the bathroom where Pradyuman’s body was found.

However, Congress leader Shehzad Poonawalla, stooped to a new low when he said that CBI apprehending the 16 year old in Pradyuman’s murder is a BJP tactic to ‘divert attention’ from the one year of demonetisation.

He said that whenever Modi government thought ‘they are in trouble’ they get CBI to come and save them.

He went on to say that many mediapersons who might have covered Congress’ protests against demonetisation may now be covering the Pradyuman case updates.

This is the most bizarre insinuation one could come up with.

But that doesn’t really come as a surprise. This is not the first time such self proclaimed fringe leaders have tried to trivialise one issue while pretending to be being worried about them.

Freelance protestor Shehla Rashid claimed that the bullet train was announced as a diversion to Gauri Lankesh’s murder.

She had also claimed that demonetisation was announced to divert attention from the missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed.

Unfortunate part is that they actually mean and stand by what they said.
