11 Assam officials arrested in job-for-cash scam perpetrated during the erstwhile Congress regime

0

In recent years, the state of Assam has been embroiled under a cash for jobs scam, whose kingpin is alleged to be Rakesh Kumar Paul the chairman of Assam Public Service Commission (APSC). Paul who was appointed to the commission by the Congress in 2008 became its Chairman in 2013.

He was since then accused of running a “jobs bazaar” during the erstwhile Congress regime where he is alleged to have collected Rs 10 lakh to Rs 40 lakh from candidates or a total of Rs 20 crore to Rs 40 crore for manipulating the mark sheet of the said candidates who then got the job.

In March 2015 the complaint in this matter was forwarded to the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption wing of Assam Police which forwarded it to the Congress led state government but nothing happened.

Now in what reports have called, the biggest move against corruption by the Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government, authorities have arrested 11 officials in connection with this case. These 11 officials who belong to the 2013 batch, were arrested from various districts in the early hours of Wednesday.

Of the 11 arrested, 7 belong to the Assam Civil Services (ACS) and 4 belong to the Assam Police Service (APS). This number is expected to go up, with officials claiming that 14 more are likely to be arrested in the next few days.

These arrests are a result of the investigative team headed by SS Panesar, Additional SP, Dibrugarh, getting forensic reports which confirmed the allegations against these 25 officials who were made to take a handwriting test this June.

As per reports, the answers scripts of these officials had turned out to be fake after forensic examination.

The arrests in this matter began in October 2016 with the arrest of a government engineer who was accused of collecting money on behalf of APSC chairman Rakesh Kumar Paul who was subsequently arrested a month later.

The arrests also include 2 APSC members named Samedur Rahman, Basanta Kumar Doley, 3 APSC officials and 3 Assam Civil Service (ACS) officers who have already been dismissed from service.

The fake answer scripts of the selected officials were seized from the residence of Rakesh Kumar Paul after his arrest. In these fake answer scripts, the marks of the candidate were manipulated. These fake answer scrips were tallied with the handwriting of the selected officials.

Rakesh Kumar Paul as per this report used to arrange a fake exam of the candidates at various secret locations after taking money from them. There the candidates were allowed to write on a fresh answer script so that their obtained marks could be manipulated.

This isn’t the only such action which has been taken in the state.

On Tuesday, Guwahati police arrested Ranjit Gogoi the Director of Information and Public Relations (IPR) in the Assam government in connection with a 30 crore publicity scam which took place towards the end of the Congress regime.

This scam was in connection with the IPR department releasing huge sums of money to private firms for running a publicity campaign called “Vision Assam Mission Assam” which highlighted the “success stories” of the Congress government ahead of the 2016 assembly election.

Remember that crying retired soldier during demonetization? He has no complaints about it

It has been exactly one year today since Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation and announced demonetisation, declaring Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 currency notes illegal tenders. Like any reform, this garnered extreme reactions from either side of political spectrum. While most people hailed this as a bold move to curb rampant corruption, the opposition went all guns blazing to term demonetisation biggest blunder and failure of Modi government.

Congress, which is on a fast track of losing relevance across the nation, spread lies about the move. Anti corruption crusader Arvind Kejriwal was caught spreading lies to hurt the demonetisation drive.

Another good thing demonetisation did was to awaken the humanity in public at large. Everyone who stood in the line kept looking for a sob story to be shared on social media for political brownie points. One such story was of an 80 year old retired army man whose face streaming with tears became the ‘face of demonetisation’. Using this image, the opposition accused the Modi government of being anti-poor and deprived of humanity. The image, as it turns out, was taken out of context and peddled by propagandists to tarnish the image of the government.

The image is back in circulation since past few days showing a united face of the Opposition.

From Aam Aadmi Party’s Photoshop expert to Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, many shared the image. Fortunately, Nand Lal, the former soldier did not have a heart wrenching story about his tearful face. Yes, he stood in line for hours at an SBI branch, and broke down after not getting cash. A year later, it has been revealed that Nand Lal’s crying face was captured when he was pushed by someone and a woman stepped on his foot.

This is how a picture clicked out of context became the face of impact of demonetisation. Lal is now happy with demonetisation, and as a staunch nationalist, for having served in the army for 20 years, he says he will abide by any decision of the government.

After Rahul Gandhi, now Manmohan Singh caught lying while campaigning in Gujarat

The upcoming assembly elections in Gujarat is a test for both the BJP and the Congress. While the former is trying to wrestle anti-incumbency, the latter is doing its best to try and stay relevant in the national political stage. And what better way to do so than etch a victory in the home state and bastion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Congress as a result is trying hard, or too hard one might say, going by the below the belt tactics it is using in its election campaign.

We had recently reported how Rahul Gandhi had lied not once, not twice but thrice during Gujarat election rallies.

First in September he lied about Sardar Patel’s Statue of Unity being made in China, despite the clarification being issued by L&T that most of the statue will be built in India, with only the bronze cladding in the form of bronze plates, comprising of about 9% of total project cost, will be sourced from China.

Then just the next day he claimed that PM Modi had waived off loan worth Rs. 1.3 lakh crore for 15 industrialists, which was again debunked by us.

After a bit of a lull, he was back again in October by lying about the financial dealing of Amit Shah’s son, an allegation which was thoroughly debunked by us prior to Rahul Gandhi’s statement.

Now it seems that this habit of Rahul Gandhi has rubbed off on former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who to some people’s surprise, has started campaigning in Gujarat.

On Wednesday, news reports emerged which quoted Manmohan Singh saying that Narendra Modi had never met him over the Sardar Sarovar Dam issue while the latter was still Gujarat’s chief minister. These were his exact words, “Modiji never held any meeting with me about the issue of the dam”.

This rebuttal comes after Narendra Modi claimed in Vadodara that every time he used to visit PM Manmohan SIngh to make a representation about the dam, the latter used to express ignorance about it’s stalled work.

Soon various Twitter users [1][2], took notice of Manmohan Singh’s statement and dug up reports which claimed that Modi had indeed met PM Manmohan Singh, not once but twice to discuss the Sardar Sarovar Dam project:

  • As per one such report Modi met Manmohan Singh back in 2009 to demand that Sardar Sarovar Project be declared a National project
  • As per another report Modi had again brought up the issue of Sardar Sarovar dam in 2013 while meeting Manmohan Singh. In this meeting, then CM of Gujarat, Narendra Modi, spoke about building a sluice gate on the dam and asked Manmohan Singh to provide clearance as soon as possible.

So clearly unlike what Manmohan Singh claims, Narendra Modi indeed held a meeting with with him on a couple of occasions in order to felicitate the Sardar Sarovar Project.

This is not the only blunder Manmohan Singh has made in Gujarat so far. He has also made a statement that the upcoming Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is an “exercise in vanity” and that the government’s priorities are misplaced.

Soon after his statement, people didn’t hold back from reminding Manmohan Singh that it was him who actually gave the project a green signal while being the Prime Minister. On top of it after his 2013 bilateral summit with Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, a joint statement was released which said :

“The two Prime Ministers decided that the two sides will co-finance a joint feasibility study of high speed railway system on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route”

So clearly back then Manmohan Singh didn’t feel that the bullet train was an “exercise in vanity” and had been pretty enthusiastic about the whole idea.

It remains to be seen whether in the coming days Manmohan Singh would become more accurate in his statements or whether he would still continue to spread lies, thereby further damaging his reputation in the eyes of the people.

Vijay Rupani and Himanta Biswa Sarma take on former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Twitter

0

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and BJP Assam leader, who was formerly with the Congress, Himanta Biswa Sarma, today took on former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who, to everyone’s delight, was ‘speaking up‘ in a press conference in poll bound Gujarat.

Oxford graduate Dr. Singh, who is an economist and has held various posts ranging from chief economic advisor to RBI governor to finance minister before becoming the two time Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014, was speaking on how Modi government policies have hindered the nation’s economy. Irony is, he just presided over scams worth crores of rupees and hoped history to be kind.

As a response to the above, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, took to Twitter to ask Dr. Singh some scathing questions using the hashtag #SpeakUpMMS, asking him why was he quiet on numerous occasions when he was Prime Minister and did not speak up against injustice.

Welcoming Dr. Singh to Gujarat, Rupani asked about the policy paralysis Dr. Singh sat over.

He questioned Dr. Singh about the motives which made him and his government stall the Narmada project which kept the people of Gujarat deprived of Narmada water for years.

Asking for his apology to the Indian citizens on behalf of UPA, for leading the most corrupt government for ten years, Rupani led a frontal attack on the former prime minister.

Soon he was joined by Himanta Biswa Sarma, former Congress leader who was snubbed by Rahul Gandhi in favour of his pet dog Pidi when Sarma wanted to discuss issues of importance of Assam. Dr. Singh represents Assam constituency in the Upper House of the Parliament, Rajya Sabha since 1991.

He asked Dr. Singh why Assam and Gujarat were deprived from legitimate oil royalty during the UPA rule.

He explained that royalty on crude oil at pre-discounted price is the sovereign right of the states. Gujarat and Assam used to get these royalties till 2008. However, Dr. Singh’s government decided to pay oil royalty at post-discounted price leading to Gujarat losing Rs. 8,392 crore and Assam losing Rs. 6,323 crore which crippled the economy.

He questioned by which right is Dr. Singh visiting Gujarat when his government has done nothing but injustice to Gujarat. One wonders when is Dr. Singh next visiting Assam to face the people he represents in Rajya Sabha.

E-filing of Income Tax returns grew 17% percent post demonetisation

0

Almost a year ago the nation embarked into uncharted territory, when PM Modi in his speech announced his government’s decision to demonetise old Rs 500, Rs 1000 notes. This set forth both political and economic chain reactions whose effects we are still seeing.

While the opposition like the Congress party is busy painting an extremely negative picture, by observing a “black day” on 8th November, the scheme has received a boost in the form of higher e-filing of Income tax returns.

As per reports, the e-filing of Income Tax returns increased by 17% post demonetisation and this number increases to 23% in the “individual filers” category. As per data, a total of 3,21,61,320 returns were filed till 31st October 2016 which rose to 3,78,20,889 returns in the October end period of 2017.

As per an income tax official, such an increase in this data is due to demonetisation as the IT department had asked people to file their returns so that they come clean with respect to their post demonetisation transactions.

The IT department has till now chosen to scrutinise about 20,572 tax returns suspecting discrepancies.

We have also reported in the past about the lesser known effects which demonetisation has brought about.

This includes the banks providing shocking data with regards to the suspected transactions during the demonetisation period. Here the government has been known to receive vital information about bank account operations and post demonetisation transactions of some suspected companies which have been struck off the Register of Companies, earlier this year. Via this data provided for just 2.5% of these companies, it was seen that a whopping Rs. 4,573.87 crore were deposited and Rs 4,552 crore were withdrawn from their accounts post 8th November 2016.

We had also carried a personal account of a Chartered Accountant who recounted in detail how many of clients that possessed black money, have come under scrutiny of the Income Tax officials.

Will propagandists apologise? suspected Bangladeshi convicted for 2015 Ranaghat nun rape case

0

The Kolkata city court today found one suspected Bangladeshi national guilty in the 2015 rape of elderly nun, which had awakened the inner detective of the likes of so-called journalists Rana Ayyub. On 14th March, 2015, the 71-year-old nun was gangraped at a convent allegedly by a group of six Bangladeshi nationals who had entered the convent after overpowering the security guard. They broke the safe and stole around Rs 12 lakh before proceeding to the first floor of the convent and raping the nun in her room. The CCTVs installed in the campus captured most of the incident which took place between 1 and 4 am.

The five accused, Salim Sheikh, Gopal Sarkar, Khaleda Rahaman Mintoo, Milan Sarkar and Ohidul Seikh, have been charged under IPC sections 120B (punishment for criminal conspiracy), 395 (punishment for dacoity), 397 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt), 376 (sexual assault), 376 D (intercourse), 212 (harbouring offender), 216 A (penalty for harbouring robbers or dacoits) and 109 (punishment of abetment). One suspect is currently missing.

This incident was used by propagandists masquerading as journalists to immediately attack and systematically blame Modi and RSS for the rape. Rana Ayyub, as we’ve already mentioned, took just 18 hours to use her brilliant deductive and detective skills to blame “inherent hatred of a faith” flared by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat.

When people questioned media houses for trial by media and jumping to conclusions and blaming ‘Hindu fringe’, numero uno ‘journalist’ Sagarika Ghose, who also likes to spread lies and communal discord, was quick to blame the readers for questioning media persons to misreporting the news.

Moreover, Congress spokie Priyanka Chaturvedi also tried to pin it on ‘rising intolerance’ against the minorities in Post-Modi India.

We wonder if any of these self appointed detectives who were quick to draw conclusion and blame it on “Hindu intolerance” will apologise, though we are certainly not holding our breath.

Mukul Roy has joined BJP and here are what the consequences could be

0

I had explained in great details in my last article how BJP is shifting gears in Bengal. From taking an aggressive stance to taking on the appeasement centric politics of Mamata, to paying attention to the grasroot level & restructuring booth committees – they have their goal fixed – ‘Mamata hatao Bengal Bachao’

They have ironed out the internal party differences and are working like a well oiled machine, readying themselves for a juggernaut. In this aggressive and expansive movement, an important aspect has been co-opting of important disgruntled leaders from other parties.

Many genuine supporters of BJP have questioned the morality of this decision and the lack of ethics in such a move. But BJP has realized some things particularly in regards to Bengal.

A. They lack a credible face , grassroot level politicians and mass leaders in Bengal.
B. To win Bengal they have to get your hands dirty.
C. They have to expand their base & presence across the state, which at present is quite limited & confined within a boundary.

Thus inducting Mukul Roy, the once trusted lieutenant of Mamata Banerjee and who has been with the Trinamool Congress since its founding, is just another step towards this expansion and overriding the boundary conditions. Now let us analyse the impacts of Mukul Roy joining BJP and what consequences it might have on Bengal politics.

1. Comparisons have been made with Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam . Himanta was one of the catalysts of BJP’s stunning win in Assam and many feel Mukul Roy can have a similiar impact. It is true to some extent but not entirely.

The major difference is that Mukul Roy is not a mass leader like Sarma. He never was. So if people are expecting some magic overnight and cadres of TMC joining BJP because of this, it might not happen. Not instantly, anyway. Nobody at this moment can match the mass appeal and rural connect that Mamata has in Bengal. Mukul Roy’s effect will be that of a silent killer and not a blitzkrieg. He will keep a low profile and will try to establish himself as a party man. He will be the brain behind every move from now on in Bengal. He will work in the background without any media attention.

2. Mukul Roy will bring Experience, something BJP Bengal lacks – experience of setting up booth committees, experience of filtering out the voter list and choosing the right candidate for the right constituency, experience of Micro management of each zillas, panchyats and municipality. He will be the party’s main election designer.

His first test in politics came during the 1991 elections when Mamta Banerjee appointed him as one of her political agents who also looked after her campaign. Roy swung into action and worked tirelessly to make her campaign a success. He never looked back. Each & every election which the TMC fought, he was their chief in charge. He knows the demography of each booth and accordingly he will chalk out a plan for each of them. He will establish a connect with his workers and local leaders. He will also try to penetrate the swing voter base.

3. At the press conference which he did after resigning as Rajya Sabha MP from Trinamool he said and I quote, “I know each constituency of Bengal & can put up a candidate in each of them”.

He was not exaggerating. Being the co-founder of TMC he probably knows each TMC cadres name. The only other notable man in Trinamool who has such in-depth knowledge at cadre level is Subroto Mukhopadhay. The effect may not be instant as I said before but Mukul is a shrewd operator. He knows which buttons to press and when. He knows weakness of each TMC leader which BJP will use in the future.

Being the chief election organiser of TMC he knows how the TMC approaches elections.

There has been reports of internal fights between various segments of TMC. There is a constant fight for tickets and the ultimate decision lies with Mamata. Mukul will use his contacts to make the other disgruntled members put pressure on Mamata and create an internal rift. He will have an influence by which he can put up that particular ‘disgruntled’ candidate as dummy independent candidate if not make him/her join BJP.

Result- cancellation of TMC votes. Particularly the votes among the minority section which is the main weapon of TMC.

4. Mukul will be the bridge to bring the intellectuals (Bhadraloks) close to BJP.

An important aspect in Bengal politics is the influence of eminent intellectuals and Bhadraloks. They have far-reaching influence. Without the support of writer Mahasheta Devi, poet Shanka Ghosh and other eminent intellectuals it would have been difficult for Mamata to grab attention in the Bhadralok corridor which was so ‘left ‘ inclined. The person responsible for this was none other than Mukul Roy. Whether it was the intellectual support during Nandigram movement or Singur, Mukul ensured that the entire lot was up and campaigning for Mamata and even rallying and doing road shows for the party.  It was from this Singur Nandigram movement the Mamata magic started capturing the minds of Bengalis. At present these groups are hostile towards BJP. With Mukul Roy in the fray expect more intellectual gatherings and sammelans. To penetrate the minds of the urban population, particularly among older & middle age groups you need some of them to campaign for you. There will be a direct reach out to them to make them switch over. Having worked with these group in past, he knows how to deal with them and how to use them to the party’s benefit.

5. In fact, Mukul was even coordinating with leaders from other parties to support Mamata during the movement. Whether it was from congress or BJP, he was in touch with all of them during that time. He was the man who Mamata Banerjee trusted to turn this small farmer’s movement into a national event. He held closed-door meetings with various groups opposed to the CPM and yet remained low profile.

While she camped in Kolkata holding protests and even her 26-day fast, it was Roy who, along with others, travelled across the state reviving the organisation and getting new members into the AITC fold. He was the one who mobilised the mobs on the ground level and created the hawa of ‘Poriborton’.

Another effect which can’t be ruled out is the effect on already weakened Left and Congress units in Bengal. It could have a domino effect with some prominent leaders joining the ranks of BJP. It could be catastrophic for them. Mukul Roy has a very cordial relationship with all political leaders across party line. So from now on if any heavy weight leaders cross over to Bengal BJP from other parties it will be fair to assume that Roy must have played a role. This could make the contest bipolar in upcoming elections or even make TMC join hands with Congress to stop BJP from coming to power. This was perhaps another reason for Amit Shah to take Mukul Roy in BJP. Otherwise Mukul Roy could have floated a new party and formed a 3rd front along with CPM and Congress. If that happened it could have been doomsday scenario for them.

The one issue that the BJP will have to deal with is rationalise how they would proceed on the corruption cases like Sarada and Narada scam post Mukul Roy joining the party.

He is the man who made things happen for Mamata Banerjee. Amit Shah and BJP would be hoping he does the same for BJP. They would like to believe he will be the catalyst that starts a reaction. A reaction which will make BJP capture the throne of Bengal and uproot Mamata Banerjee.

The party will put his organizational skills to test in the upcoming panchayat polls in which the BJP has set a target of reaching out to all the 77,000 polling booths in the state and though with limited time in his hands, Mukul will play a crucial role. He was instrumental in the previous ‘Poriborton’ saga. Will he lead to another ‘Poriborton’ that Bengal badly needs?

Kapil Mishra makes startling demonetisation related allegations against Arvind Kejriwal

0

Aam Aadmi Party rebel leader Kapil Mishra, who is leading a crusade against alleged corruption and irregularities in Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party, today put up a series of tweets casting aspersions on Arvind Kejriwal’s total breakdown after demonetisation was announced by Narendra Modi on 8th November last year.

Mishra, in his tweets, speaks about one Hem Prakash Sharma, who according to him is the key to Kejriwal’s demonetisation drama. Mishra alleges that on 5th April, 2014, a week before Kejriwal filed his nomination for 2014 General Elections from Varanasi, Rs. 2 crore had been deposited in AAP’s account from four shell companies. Of these 4 companies, Hem Prakash Sharma is a director in 3. During an ED raid after demonetisation, carried out in GK in Delhi, Rs. 13 crore worth currency was found. One of the directors of this company is also one Hem Prakash Sharma.

He further said that Hem Prakash Sharma is a fake director, who probably does not even exist.

He goes on to add that the only reason Kejriwal is on a back foot about contesting elections is the demonetisation, which has hurt him the most. This is bewildering for someone like Kejriwal, who hailed himself as an anti corruption crusader and formed the political outfit on the plank of fighting corruption.

Mishra further alleged that AAP had decided in an internal meeting that they should instigate those who were standing in queues after demonetisation, by pretending to be regular people and badmouthing Modi so people would get angry.

He says that attempts were made to correlate deaths to demonetisation, as if Kejriwal was waiting for a big disaster to strike soon so that demonetisation could be declared a failure. He says that as a former IRS officer, Kejriwal knew the legal loopholes which could be exploited to carry out such transactions.

He alleges that demonetisation drive has broken Kejriwal’s strength, which is why he has now joined hands with Congress to protest on 8th November, one year of demonetisation, as “black day”.

Meanwhile, we tried to look into the mysterious Hem Prakash Sharma. According to this report, the official records show that the four companies that had donated to AAP in April 2014, have no revenue to show. These companies have three common directors, Hem Prakash Sharma, Dharmender Kumar and Mukesh Kumar. The addresses listed in the registrar house a post office, a grocery store with shutters down and a small sewing factory. From the details it would seem like these were shell companies.

Moreover, DNA was able to track down one of these directors, Mukesh Kumar, who denied donating anything to AAP, ever. He admitted to owning these companies, which exist only on paper, but denied donating to AAP. As per DNA, when they visited the address of Hem Prakash Sharma as mentioned in the official records, they found the two-storey house. There resided a lady in her 60s and a woman named Deepika Sharma, who was living with her family. She denied knowing Hem Prakash Sharma.

So who are these mysterious men? Are they fictitious? If so, who is funding these operations? Is there something the ‘anti corruption crusader’, Arvind Kejriwal, hiding from us?

Harbhajan Singh sends a hilarious response after newspaper misquotes his statement about Kohli

0

Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh regularly stays active on Twitter. With about 6.24 million followers he has a marked presence there.

On 5th November, he tweeted birthday wishes to fellow cricketer Virat Kohli:

Harbhajan sought to give added respect to Kohli by calling him his brother from another mother but a Hindi newspaper made a bit of a mess of his tweet:

Image via @RaiOnAir

As seen in the clipping titled “Bhajji calls Kohli has second mother”, the newspaper stated that many people had wished Virat Kohli a happy birthday but Harbhajan’s wish was bit special, where he called Kohli his brother and second mother.

Soon a twitter user brought it to Harbhajan’s notice:

Harbhajan too decided to have a bit of fun. He sent out a tweet jokingly claiming that the journalist who interpreted his tweet to Hindi was drunk while on job:

This isn’t the only time Harbhajan has grabbed the headlines thanks to his tweets.

In September he had joked about the tax break-up in a GST bill which includes mentioning the component going to the states and the centre:

He was also recently attacked by trolls who had termed him as anti-Sikh for celebrating Karwa Chauth. He, in his responses, had subsequently reprimanded the trolls by asking them not to mislead people in the name of religion.

Supreme Court’s ban on pet coke, furnace oil to leave 25 lakh workers jobless, claims Assocham

0

In order to combat rising air pollution in Delhi, the Supreme Court on 24th October banned the usage of pet coke and furnace oil in the National Capital Region’s industries from 1st November. The apex court in that hearing also lashed out at the Central government for not complying with its order to set emission standards for industries.

Now such a ban on pet coke and furnace oil hasn’t been welcomed by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) which is one of the largest trade associations of India.

As per reports, Assocham in a statement on Monday stated that such a ban in the National Capital Region would render about 25 lakh workers jobless in Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gurugram, Panipat, Sonipat and Noida.

Assocham has claimed that about 1000 units and 10,000 allied units have been severely impacted by the Supreme Court ban. The industries which are directly affected are textiles, rubber, sugar, steel, paper, packaging, forging, agro based industries to name a few.

The trade association claimed that the industries are already under tremendous stress post GST and a ban on pet coke’s use would be the final nail in the coffin. The association thus requested that adequate time be given to the industries to migrate from furnace oil, pet coke to gas based alternatives which would save the workers’ livelihood.

It also pointed out that the alternative in Natural Gas is about 4 times more expensive than furnace oil and pet coke which the industry cannot afford in the competitive environment and poor economic scenario.

This ban by the Supreme Court stems from the report provided by the court appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA) which had recommended a strict ban on distribution, sale and use of these fuels to curb the pollution in the region.

Assocham in this regards asked as to why no action has been taken by the dust pollution in the capital and questioned why the industry which is always agreeing to comply with the norms is being punished.

Assocham in its press release also laid out technical arguments which claimed that pet coke has been labelled as a pollutant because of its higher Sulphur content and alleged emission of Sulphur Dioxide. It then claimed that as per a Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) report, the Sulphur Dioxide levels in the entire NCR region are well within the prescribed limits.

This isn’t the only time the traders have opposed Supreme Court bans.

Soon after the Supreme Court had imposed a ban on the sale of fire crackers till 1st November ( A time duration which coincided with the festival of Diwali), various traders had come out in protest by claiming that they had already invested a huge amount of money and such a ban would cause a huge financial loss.
