FIR filed against pro-Congress X account for spreading fake news on middle east conflict to incite hatred, account deactivated

In a move to curb the spread of fake news that could incite communal disharmony and disrupt public order, the Delhi Police’s Cyber Crime Unit has registered an FIR against the X handle @__Amoxicillin_, accusing the user of disseminating false information. The action comes after the account had claimed that Saudi Arabia had apprehended two Israeli Mossad agents, one of them an Indian national, who allegedly planned to plant bombs and blame Iran.

The claim was swiftly debunked by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), labelling it as “preposterous and unsubstantiated.” Similarly, Saudi Arabia also denied any such arrest. The account has already been deactivated.

The post, which garnered over 300,000 views before the account’s deactivation, said, “Saudi Arabia apprehends two Israeli Mossad agents who attempted to plant bombs and later blame Iran. One of them is an Indian national.”

The Delhi Police’s IFSO (Internet Freedom and Safety Organization) unit issued a takedown notice to X Corp under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, directing the platform to disable access to the offending post and the user’s account within three hours. The notice cited violations of Sections 336 (acts endangering life or personal safety), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant), and 356 (assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, saying that the content promoted enmity between groups, spread misinformation, and could lead to public mischief.

According to the order, the content of the post appears to be provocative in nature and has the potential to incite hatred, spread misinformation, and adversely impact communal harmony and public tranquillity. It added, “such content is violative of the platform’s community guidelines and may also attract provisions of applicable Indian laws relating to promotion of enmity, spreading false information, and misuse of online platforms.”

Shortly after the directive was issued, the @__Amoxicillin_ account was deactivated, with the user posting a farewell message citing harassment from “Modi Bhakts and MAGA supporters.”

Amid the heightened geopolitical tensions involving Iran, Israel, the US and Gulf nations, a flurry of fake and misleading claims is being circulated on social media. The false claim of arrested Mossad agents echoed unsubstantiated rumours amplified by U.S. commentator Tucker Carlson about Mossad agents being arrested in Saudi Arabia and Qatar for similar plots, which were dismissed by official sources in both countries as baseless.

@__Amoxicillin_ was at the forefront of posting such fake messages, and large numbers of such claims were debunked by netizens and Grok. He claimed that Israel’s defence minister was killed in Iranian strike, that Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport has been destroyed by Iran, that over 1000 American troops have been killed by Iran etc. The account was posting fake news claiming that Iran was winning against US and Israel in the war. It had also falsely claimed that China has banned Bollywood, and a posted a large number false claims on Donald Trump and Epstein Files.

Social media users have accused @__Amoxicillin_ of being a part of Congress IT cell, as the account reveals a consistent pro-Congress and anti-BJP bias. The user frequently promoted narratives supportive of the Indian National Congress, such as highlighting criticisms of the “Sanghi ecosystem” and portraying Rahul Gandhi’s statements as pointed attacks on BJP affiliates.

The account often mocked BJP supporters as “bhakts” and critiqued the party’s policies, while aligning with Congress viewpoints on issues like economic reforms and foreign policy.

For instance, one post celebrated a court ruling criticising Delhi Police over the arrest of a Youth Congress leader, framing it as a win against perceived BJP-aligned authorities.

The identity of the person behind the account is unknown, but its X bio mentioned “Medical Student | Radiology”, and location was stated as Telangana. Notably, the name Amoxicillin is name of a penicillin-type antibiotic used in bacterial infections.
