Mahua Moitra’s revenge? Bengal Police uses 4-month old murder and kidnapping case to seek personal details of X handles who were threatened with FIR by TMC MP

In a bizarre turn of events, West Bengal Police launched a witch hunt against netizens who were recently threatened by Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra for trolling her on social media over an alleged leaked chat screenshots. Ankur Singh, who runs famous social media handles like Political Kida, received an email from X informing him that West Bengal Police has sought his details, including the mobile number linked to the account, Gmail address and the last IP location.

The email contained two attachments, a notice to X under Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) Section 94 and details of the FIR for which the information was sought. To Ankur’s shock, the FIR under which his, and other social media users’, details were sought was a murder case that happened in October 2025.

In a social media post, Ankur called law and order in West Bengal “a joke” and added, “Mahua knows that filing a case in the matter will only expose her truth. So, she made the Bengal DGP attach our names to a murder case which happened in October 2025. The case is of abduction and murder in Bengal 4 months ago. I never went to Bengal in the last 25 years. I don’t know anyone mentioned in the case. And why do they need Gmail and IP details from X in it? Did we abduct and murder via a tweet? How can you expect Bengal Police to act against criminals when the Bengal DGP is himself filing such fraud cases?”

Interestingly, on 5th February, in a series of social media posts, Moitra had shared screenshots of social media handles of Ankur, Tanisha, Fauzdar15, Saffronhawk, and a few others stating she has filed FIRs against them. The notice was issued by West Bengal police on 7th February.

Details of the case under which details were sought

OpIndia checked details of the case under which West Bengal Police sought details of Ankur and other social media handles.

On 31st October 2025, Debasish Kamila filed a police complaint at Bidhannagar (South) police station following the alleged murder of his brother in law. Based on his complaint, an FIR was registered under Sections 103(1), 140(3), 238, 303(2), and 61(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against Prashanta Barman and a few unknown persons.

The complainant stated that his brother in law, a goldsmith working in Kolkata, was allegedly taken away by individuals claiming to be officials, including a person identifying himself as a BDO named Prasanta Barman, from outside his workplace. He never returned home thereafter. The next day, a body matching his description was recovered from a canal area in New Town. The complainant suspects that the men who took him away murdered him and disposed of his body, and has sought a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.

Barman had obtained anticipatory bail from a lower court, which was challenged by the West Bengal Police in the Calcutta High Court. After the High Court set aside the bail, he approached the Supreme Court. On 20th January 2026, the apex court refused to grant him bail and asked him to surrender before 23rd January.

It was a local case and, as Ankur stated, he had not visited West Bengal in the past 25 years. Other handles whose details have been sought by the police are Surajit Dasgupta (surajitdasgupta), Tanisha Vashistha (bitchybothe), fauzdar15, and saffronhawk.

Speaking yo OpIndia, Ankur said, “All the handles targeted belong to people from different states who merely posted about a TMC leader. I don’t have any connection with West Bengal, let alone a local kidnapping and murder case. If we are being dragged for posting about a TMC leader, it appears tweets have now been linked to a serious criminal investigation. Someone really needs to research what kind of technology can convert social media posts into abduction and murder.”

The chat leak case

Recently some chat screenshots went viral on social media, where it was alleged that the conversation was between Mahua Moitra and Jan Suraaj chief Prashant Kishor. TMC MP Mahua Moitra had stated on social media that she had filed FIRs against handles like Ankur Singh (AnkurSingh), Surajit Dasgupta (surajitdasgupta), Tanisha Vashistha (bitchybothe), fauzdar15, and saffronhawk. All of these handles have now been named by Bengal Police in connection with the October murder and kidnapping case while seeking their personal and digital details from X.
