UP: Procession on Dr Ambedkar Jayanti stopped and attacked by Yadav groups, miscreants pelt stones on police

A tense situation unfolded on Tuesday, 14th April, in Kasganj district of Uttar Pradesh when a procession on the birth anniversary of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar was stopped midway and turned violent in Chahka Gunar village. The clash broke out after a group identified as members of the Yadav community blocked the route, leading to stone-pelting not only on the procession but also on the police.

Procession stopped, tension escalates

The incident took place in the Sahawar police station area, where the Ambedkar Jayanti procession had started around 2:45 pm with prior permission from authorities. As the procession moved through the village, it reached a lane dominated by members of the Yadav community. Vehicles like tractors and threshers were parked across the road, blocking the way.

Participants of the procession objected and said they had official permission to pass through the route. However, the blockade was not removed, and arguments between the two sides quickly turned into a confrontation.

Stone-pelting from rooftops, the police also targeted

Soon after the argument, people climbed onto rooftops and began pelting bricks and stones. The situation worsened rapidly, and even the police teams that reached the spot came under attack. Constable Ashwani Malik from Sahawar police station was among those injured.

Despite efforts by officers to calm things down, the stone-pelting continued for hours. Additional forces were rushed in, including ASP Sushil Kumar, ADM Digvijay Singh, SDM SN Tripathi, and CO Shahida Nasreen. Police eventually used tear gas and mild force to disperse the crowd.

Senior officials step in, arrests made

By evening, around 7 pm, District Magistrate Pranay Singh and Superintendent of Police OP Singh reached the village to review the situation. Under heavy police protection, the stalled procession was finally allowed to move late at night.

Police said around 10 people have been arrested so far, while others involved are being identified using CCTV footage. Raids are ongoing to catch those who fled.

Heavy deployment, area remains tense

Officials confirmed that more than 50 Ambedkar Jayanti processions were held across 10 police station areas in the district on the same day, most of them peacefully. However, this particular incident was described by the police as a planned and serious attack, in which even security personnel were not spared.

Kasganj, already considered a sensitive district, remains under tight security. A large police force is still deployed in Chahka Gunar village, and patrolling has been intensified. Residents have largely stayed indoors following the violence, while authorities continue monitoring the situation closely.
