Indus Water Treaty

A visibly disturbed Kumar questioned the capability of the Indian government to stop the water flowing into Pakistan.

The government has issued an official notification on holding the Indus Water Treaty in abeyance, sources said on Friday.

Signed on 19th September 1960 in Karachi, the Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan was brokered by the World Bank. This water-sharing agreement governs the use of the Indus River system.

On 24th February, India reportedly completely curtailed the flow of water from the Ravi River into Pakistan following the completion of the Shahpur Kandi barrage

India has always been a responsible partner in implementing the IWT. Pakistan's actions, however, have encroached on the provisions of IWT and their implementation and forced India to issue an appropriate notice for modification of IWT, sources said.

The move by the Indian government is considered to be the response to Pakistan's continuous propagation of terror into India and also its attempts to destabilise the normalcy in the Kashmir.
