Kavita Krishnan compared the brutal torture of Mahsa Amini to the opposition by Hindu groups to selectively entertaining Muslim religious attire in government schools.
“Ambedkar’s statement, although he was a pillar, is a deeply offensive statement. It is not a statement that should be repeated in India, great though he may have been. (It was a) totally biased statement,” senior advocate Gonsalves, representing some of the Muslim girls, said to SC.
The Supreme Court also issued a notice to the Karnataka government on petitions challenging a High Court ruling refusing to lift the ban on hijab in state educational institutions
More than 16% of Muslim girl students have taken their transfer certificate (TC) in the second, third, fourth and fifth semesters of government and aided colleges affiliated with Mangalore University in Karnataka
The Karnataka HC had in March stated that the petitioners failed to prove that hijab is an essential religious practice in Islam and educational institutions in the state can mandate dress codes.
