A Bench comprising CJI Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice Vipin Pancholi took sou motu cognisance of the Malda incident after being alerted by the Calcutta High Court CJI. The apex court came down heavily on the West Bengal government and the Malda district administration.
A Bench comprising Surya Kant, Joymalya Bagchi and Vipin Pancholi strongly criticised the Mamata government of West Bengal, saying there was a clear “abdication of duty” on its part.
A three-judge Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant stated on Wednesday, “We have received a letter from the Calcutta High Court Chief Justice on Tuesday. We are happy about the facts and figures given…. Out of 60 lakh, 47 lakh objections have been decided till last evening. By April 7, all objections will be decided.”
"No person who professes a religion other than Hindu, Sikh or Buddhist shall be a member of Scheduled Caste. Conversion to any other religion results in loss of Scheduled Caste status," ruled the Supreme Court.
The court also made it clear that once animals are imported legally with proper permissions, those imports cannot be questioned later just because someone raises objections.
