One of the most significant reasons for stampede is overcrowding. In many cases, the number of attendees of an event exceeds the capacity of the venue of the area where the event is happening. It can lead to dangerous situations. Furthermore, poor planning and crowd management add up to the problem.
"A total of 116 people have died so far...32 bodies were brought here and 19 of them have been identified. We are identifying the rest of them..." said Hathras Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Manjeet Singh.
The stampede took place during a Satsang which was being led by a self-styled Godman who goes by various aliases ‘Bhole Baba’ aka Narayan Sakar Hari or Sakaar Vishwa Hari.
"Permission for the event to be held was given by the SDM and it was a private event. A high-level committee has been formed to investigate the matter. The primary focus of the administration is to provide all possible help to the injured and kin of the deceased," Hathras DM Ashish Kumar told ANI.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has taken note of the tragedy and has set up a committee to investigate the incident. The panel has been formed which will be headed by Additional Director General of Police (Agra) and the Aligarh Commissioner.
Based on the complaint of the victim’s family and grounds of suspicion, Police detained two suspects including one Maulvi of the madarsa where the minor was studying.
UPPSC secretary Ashok Kumar said that section officer Shiv Shankar, review officer Neelam Shukla, and assistant review officer Bhagwati Devi had been suspended for their negligent behavior in investigating this matter.
Allahabad High Court noted, “If this process is allowed to be carried out, the majority population of this country would be in minority one day, and such religious congregation should be immediately stopped where the conversion is taking place and changing the religion of citizen of India.”
