Uttar Pradesh: Policeman killed in Ghazipur as Nishad Party workers get violent, pelt stones

During the Gorakhpur bypolls held earlier this year, Samajwadi Party had extended support to Nishad Party candidate, Praveen Nishad, founder Sanjay Nishad's son.

Stone pelting led to the death of one police constable after a group of protestors of Nishad Party, which is demanding reservations, turned violent. Seven other policemen have suffered leg injuries in the mob violence.

The Nishad Party are demanding reservation for the communities. As per the police, constable Suresh Vats, was returning from his duty at the Prime Minister’s rally where he was hit by the protestors who turned violent. The protestors belonging to the Nishad Party had blocked a road demanding the release of their four party members who were arrested for staging a protest earlier in the day.

Nishad Party was started by Sanjay Nishad, former member of the Bahujan Samaj Party. In the Gorakhpur bypolls held in February this year, Samajwadi Party had extended its support to Nishad Party candidate Praveen Kumar Nishad who contested on the Samajwadi Party election symbol.

Currently, the police has registered FIR against 32 people in the case. 60 unnamed people are also mentioned in the FIR and a few people have also been arrested. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced compensation of Rs. 40 lakh for the wife and Rs. 10 lakh for his parents. He has also directed the administration to take strict action against unruly elements and immediately arrest them.
