Pakistan Cricket Board pulls out of World Championship of Legends, claims political bias and unfair conduct

The PCB said it would not take part in any event where the values of neutrality and fair play are undermined.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially announced that it will no longer participate in any future editions of the World Championship of Legends (WCL), raising concerns about the tournament’s fairness, integrity, and political neutrality. “The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announces that it is issuing a blanket ban from future participation in the World Championship of Legends (WCL),” said a statement issued by the board.

One of the most contentious issues raised by the board was the decision to award points to a team that had voluntarily forfeited a match, a move the PCB claimed as “highly questionable” and against the spirit of fair competition.

The decision was taken during a Board of Governors meeting chaired by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi. A statement issued by PCB said that they “reviewed with considerable disappointment WCL’s appalling conduct of awarding points to a willfully forfeiting team, and the content of the press releases of the WCL announcing the cancellation of the scheduled India vs Pakistan legends matches, which were tainted with hypocrisy and bias”.

The board further criticised the press release by WCL organisers after the India-Pakistan match was called off. It said that the “contents of the said press releases highlight a duality where the narrative of “peace through sport” is selectively applied and sporting events are held hostage to political expediency and narrow commercial interests.”

The PCB said that it has always advocated for the separation of sports and politics. The PCB statement said, “Our unwavering belief is that cricket, like other international sports, should solely serve as a platform for goodwill, healthy competition, and mutual respect. For a tournament involving legendary players to be dictated by sentiments that undermine this fundamental principle is not only regrettable but also deeply concerning for the future of independent sporting events.”

It stated that the fact that WCL apologised for “hurting the sentiments” shows that the cancellation of the match was not based on cricketing merit, but rather on succumbing to a specific nationalistic narrative. The PCB declared, “The PCB can no longer condone participation in an event where the fundamental principles of fair play and unbiased administration are compromised by external pressures.”
