Canada: Indian-origin student Shivank Avasthi shot dead in Toronto, no arrests made yet

Shivank Avasthi, a 20-year-old Indian-origin student at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), was shot dead by assailants on December 23, 2025, near the campus in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area. He was a third-year life sciences undergraduate and a member of the university’s cheerleading team.

As per reports, it was the 41st homicide in Toronto city this year.

Toronto police responded to reports around 3:30 pm, finding Avasthi with gunshot wounds. Avasthi was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspects fled, and no arrests have been made. The incident, Toronto’s 41st homicide of 2025, prompted a brief campus lockdown.

The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep anguish, offering assistance to the family. The UTSC cheerleading team mourned him as a supportive teammate. Police described it as isolated with no ongoing threat.
