Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan: PM Modi launches 100-week nationwide campaign against substance abuse

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday launched the ‘Nasha Mukt Yuva for Viksit Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’, marking the start of a sustained 100-week nationwide Jan Bhagidari campaign against substance abuse. The programme brings together more than one crore youth from over 10,000 locations across the country, including MY Bharat volunteers, National Service Scheme volunteers, youth clubs, schools, colleges, universities, NGOs, youth wings of industry associations and more than 125 partner spiritual organisations.

Addressing the event through video conferencing, the Prime Minister underlined the collective nature of the effort. “There are some tasks in which an individual effort alone can lead to disappointment and fatigue. But when the same effort becomes a collective campaign, those who may not have been able to achieve much individually draw strength from the power of unity. There is immense strength in collective action, and this campaign will touch the hearts of every young person,” he said. He noted that lakhs of youths had just taken the pledge to stay away from drugs and resolved to spread the message of a drug-free society in their schools, colleges and communities, adding that the resolve taken today would continue to move forward over the next 100 weeks.

Highlighting the scale of participation, PM Modi observed, “Today, lakhs of students from thousands of schools, colleges and universities have joined this programme online. Volunteers of My Bharat and NSS members are also participating in large numbers. More than one crore youths from different sectors, institutions and backgrounds have come together today. I urge all of you to lead this movement. You have strengthened my belief that India’s youth is aware, responsible and serious about their duties.” He reminded the young participants that they are India’s Amrit Peedhi who will shape their own lives and lead the country to the goal of a developed India by 2047.

The Prime Minister stressed that the campaign is for the individual, the family, society and the nation. “As the nation sets its sights on becoming a Viksit Bharat, it is essential that our youth be healthy in body and mind, brimming with self-confidence, and forever free from the deadly habit of drugs. This is the objective of the campaign,” he said.

The PM appealed to college and university professors to discuss the dangers of drugs with students alongside regular coursework and to run a movement against substance abuse on their campuses, noting that such efforts could yield significant results. He also urged families not to hide a child’s addiction behind social prestige but to seek medical help and build a culture of open dialogue so that young people can be guided before they fall into trouble.

The initiative builds on the vision articulated by the Prime Minister on 15 August 2020 for a Nasha Mukt Bharat and expands a pilot project that began in Kashi last year into a full-fledged national movement. Under the campaign, weekly activities will be organised every Sunday for the next 100 weeks. These will include sports events, walkathons, meditation sessions, cultural programmes, awareness campaigns, street dramas, discussion forums, art competitions and community engagement programmes designed to promote healthy lifestyles and channel the energy of the youth towards constructive nation-building.

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya noted that a developed nation can be built only when its citizens are healthy, as healthy individuals create a healthy society and a prosperous country. He recalled the Prime Minister’s call during Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to make all 140 crore Indians partners in development and said empowering the youth is essential for that goal. The launch event also saw the participation of several Chief Ministers, Governors and prominent spiritual leaders, reinforcing the broad-based support for the fight against substance abuse.

In his message on social media, the Prime Minister urged every citizen, especially the youth, to join the movement, describing it as a 100-week campaign against substance abuse that seeks to inspire young people to remain free from addiction and become ambassadors of positive social change. The campaign aims to carry the national resolve of a drug-free youth being the greatest strength of Viksit Bharat to every village, town and city, further strengthening India’s journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047.
