On Tuesday, 11th August, the West Bengal Police arrested Delhi Capitals batsman Abishek Porel in connection with a criminal case filed by a medical student. The case involves charges related to rape, criminal intimidation, assault and other offences.
Abishek Porel was taken into custody from Emami City under Dum Dum police station, Hooghly Rural police SP Kunwar Bhushan Singh said.

The case came to light after the woman approached the police in June this year and complained about her three-year relationship with Abishek Porel. She told the police that the cricketer had promised to marry her but later began distancing himself from her. She also accused him of having a sexual relationship with her on the promise of marriage.
What the complaint says
In her complaint, the woman alleged that Abishek Porel had confined her and stopped her from getting food while keeping her isolated. She said her health became weak and she had difficulty walking. The complaint also stated that despite having a flight to catch, she had to seek medical treatment because of injuries she suffered.
The woman further complained of assault and criminal intimidation. She said the relationship had continued for around three years, but problems began last year when Porel started distancing himself from her. She claimed that although he had earlier agreed to marry her, he was later unwilling to do so.
A police officer confirmed that the complaint had been received and that an investigation was launched. The Calcutta High Court later directed the police to arrest cricketer Abishek Porel in connection with the case.
Abishek Porel denies sexual assault charges
Porel has denied the accusations in the past. The latest action comes as the police investigate the claims made in the complaint and the charges mentioned in the FIR.
The 23-year-old left-handed top-order batter has been part of the Delhi Capitals squad in the Indian Premier League since 2023. He scored 108 runs in four innings for the franchise last season. He has also travelled with the India A team to the UK and Australia.
Porel made his first-class debut for Bengal during the 2021-22 season. So far, he has played 32 first-class matches and 23 List A games.
The investigation will now focus on the claims made in the complaint and the evidence collected by the police.
