Tamil Nadu woman rescued from Kuwait after distressing SOS video; FIR filed against agent who duped her

The Indian embassy in Kuwait rescued Kallakurichi Vanitha, the Indian woman from Tamil Nadu who had posted an SOS video seeking to be rescued. After being rescued, Vanitha thanked the Indian embassy for responding to her call for help.

“I am Vanitha, who had sought the Indian Embassy’s help to rescue me. Now, I am in the Indian Embassy. Thank you, Indian Embassy. I have good dress and good food now,” Vanitha said in a video made after her rescue.

The Indian embassy in Kuwait sprang into action soon after Vanitha’s video emerged. “As soon as our embassy became aware of this issue, it offered assistance. She is currently at our embassy. We remain committed to doing our best for the well-being, safety, and welfare of Indian nationals abroad,” External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.

Vanitha, a mother of two, had been working as a domestic help in Kuwait for three months before she posted the video. In the video, Vanitha was seen inside a cramped room with her head covered. Looking distressed, Vanitha stated that she was subjected to severe abuse and torture and was denied salary for the last two months.

She made a desperate appeal with folded hands to the Kallakurichi District Collector and Superintendent of Police to save her life as she feared that her employers might have killed her. After Vanitha’s video surfaced, the Tamil Nadu authorities traced her family in Kallakurichi.

Her mother, Anila, also urged the authorities to rescue her. Anila told the authorities that her daughter was duped by an agent and demanded action against him. Acting on Anila’s complaint, the police filed an FIR against the agent accused of duping Vanitha and her family on Friday (4th September).

A similar case of abuse and torture of an Indian woman employee in Kuwait in 2024. The Indian woman named Gara Kumari, a widow and mother of three, had made a video revealing that her employers had tortured her. Kumari, a resident of Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh, had sought to be rescued.
