A disturbing incident came to light in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, where a man was brutally beaten to death for merely objecting to public urination. The incident took place on Saturday night (5th September) in the Kakadev police station area.
Victim Amit Gupta, a trader, was leaving after closing his shop in the local market at the time of the incident. He saw a group of heavily drunk men urinating in public. Gupta asked the men not to urinate in the public area, saying that there were houses nearby. The intoxicated men took offence at Gupta’s objection and started beating him brutally.
The men pushed him to the ground and thrashed him mercilessly. After beating him unconscious, they left him on the spot and fled. The entire incident was captured on a nearby CCTV camera, showing the culprits attacking Gupta, who was completely defenceless.
The locals informed the police and the victim’s family about the incident. On getting information about the brutal attack on Gupta, his family reached the spot and rushed him to the hospital. He was first taken to a local private hospital, from where he was referred to another medical facility. Gupta remained unconscious in the hospital with serious head injuries. Two days later, on 7th September, he succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead.
As per reports, the police registered a case in the matter 72 hours after the incident. The victim’s family handed over the CCTV footage to the police, but the accused remain free. Gupta’s wife, Shalini Gupta, said that she is concerned about the safety of her children since the accused are roaming free. She added that the family was afraid to even approach the police and get the case registered. She demanded swift and stringent action against the culprits.
Speaking about the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Atul Srivastava said that four teams of police have been formed to nab the culprits.

DCP Srivastava said that around a dozen people were detained and interrogated in connection with the incident. He said that the names of four persons emerged during the interrogation, and the police are looking for them. He assured that appropriate legal action would be taken against the accused in the case.
